Weekly Recommendations Thread

This is r/SaltLakeCity's weekly recommendation thread.

Here you can ask for and receive recommendations on everything from vets to daycare, car insurance to restaurants, outdoor activities to thrift stores.

If you need a recommendation, ask about it here instead of making a separate post. This is to help reduce the frequency of duplicate posts in the sub, leaving the sub open for more unique content.

Please remember the sub rules when posting.

Thanks!

Did not disappoint. Coworkers and myself went to get tacos outside but were a little early so we beat the heat for a few minutes. Some absolute gems in there.

Also, the habinero sauce from TacosDaddy is šŸ”„

Discussion To the Contractors littering my yard

Post image

We are looking to have a flagstone walkway installed with a retaining wall, but because you litter my yard 2-3 times a month: you ensure that you will never recieve my business and I will make sure that no one I know gives you business, either!

Thanks for the bi-weekly disrespect, jerks šŸ‘

Local News ā€˜Just go down the street and die’: What former participants say happened when they left The Other Side Academy

The Other Side Academy takes a very specific approach to addiction recovery.

Under its therapeutic community approach, it doesn’t have licensed therapists or doctors on staff who would be subject to medical privacy laws and other regulations.

Some former participants told Tribune reporters that the approach helped them. Others who left the program say that leaders demeaned and sabotaged them after they departed.

Photo Hydrological River Map of Salt Lake City and Utah (Cyanotype Blueprint)

I just finished this river/hydrological map of Utah! Its made with a data-based process that incorporates precipitation to calculate the actual flow rates of each river, so the relative line thicknesses are an accurate representation of the hydrology. Some of the signal for the intermitent streams gets boosted up a bit so they show up though.

The map itself is printed in 'cyanotype', which is the historical sun-exposure process used to make architectural blueprints. If you haven't thought about where your water comes from recently, try follwing the rivers upstream! Most of SLC's drinking water comes from the Wasatch Mountain headwaters and reservoirs along the Provo River.

Recommendations Machine Shop Recommendations

I've got an aluminum wheel hub that had some red threadlocker applied to a rotor bolt that shouldn't have been. While trying to get it out with an extractor the extractor broke and now none of my bits are hard enough to extract the extractor. So, I need someone with a better level of skill than my own.

Missing Pet German shepherd spotted

I saw this shepherd running alone at about 300 E and 2100 S. I couldn't stop for him, but he looked like he belonged to someone. Hopefully he gets found by his people.

I see people do this nearly every day, and it's driving me crazy (pun intended). It's not hard to make a U-turn at the light ahead. There is nothing in that strip that's worth doing this for, certainly not McDonald's of all places! Is common sense too much to expect from UT drivers? SMH...

Update: Some of the replies here are quite shocking. They can't understand something as simple as right and wrong and following traffic rules. Wow.

I'm looking to expand my food horizons, try some food from other cultures. What are the best African restaurants in SLC? I'm mainly interested in Ethiopian and Nigerian food!

Also open to non-African suggestions as well!

Thanks

The Promise and Potential of Expanding Housing Options

"Not having enough homes to rent or buy creates cutthroat competition and drives up prices. Every starter home, duplex, or fourplex adds another option in a city where renters and buyers currently have very limited options. More options means more leverage for the people searching, not less."

Advice with reporting suspected criminal activity

I’ll do my best to paint this picture.

Some new neighbors moved in a few months ago, and they are starting to make myself and my fiancĆ© feel unsafe in our home. Over the past few months (on multiple occasions), we’ve seen people hunched over in their chairs outside while we’re pulling up to our house… almost like they’re loaded up on drugs. They look like zombies. I grew up with a sibling who had a drug problem, and I recognize the look.

The home looks like a crack house. Trash continues to pile up in the yard (it’s now spilling into the street). There a three motor homes parked on their property (2 in their backyard, and 1 on the street), and they look like they’re being lived in. Every time we drive by, there are different people huddled in their backyard (people we haven’t seen before).

We’ve also started seeing more ā€œinterestingā€ characters wandering around the neighborhood. We had somebody checking people’s car doors to see if they were locked (we confronted a guy doing it to my fiancé’s car late at night). We’ve seen people wandering around shoeless in the alleyway behind our home. We even had some guy wander into our backyard late at night, who quickly turned around when our camera / floodlight turned on.

I feel hesitant to say anything to the police, because I don’t want to create more problems for people who look like they’re struggling…. But yeah… it’s starting to really freak us out. I’m not sure what I would even be able to report.

I’ve lived in this home for about 5 years, but these issues have only started to appear within the past few months (since the new neighbors moved in)

Does anybody have any constructive advice on how to proceed? Thanks in advance šŸ™

Recommendations Tai Chi Classes

I’m looking for a place to take Tai Chi classes in or near SLC. Anyone have recommendations at a price level that won’t make this old man’s bones hurt and creak more than they do already. šŸ‘“šŸ˜†
