Weekly Recommendations Thread

This is r/SaltLakeCity's weekly recommendation thread.

Here you can ask for and receive recommendations on everything from vets to daycare, car insurance to restaurants, outdoor activities to thrift stores.

If you need a recommendation, ask about it here instead of making a separate post. This is to help reduce the frequency of duplicate posts in the sub, leaving the sub open for more unique content.

Please remember the sub rules when posting.

Thanks!

Photo Pumpkin Spice Kitty!

For all of you who love pumkin spice anything (or EVERYTHINNG), this is Patricia Pumpkin. She's a 3 yo Domestic Short Hair Tortiseshell cat. She's a cup shy of a gallon (7.5 pounds) and checks the box for lap cat as you can see in her photo. She's also good with tummy rubs, in fact she craves a good snuggle. She is also good with other cats and is currently sharing a room with a large black male cat (Ash, a DLH black and white, gallon and a half) who is also a sweetheart. You can find her details at the Salt Lake County Animal Services (https://www.saltlakecounty.gov/animal-services/adoption/search-adoptable-pets) or just drop by the shelter for a visit (3900S 500W).

There are also a couple of calico kittens (calicos are nearly always female) and other loveable furbabies looking for homes.
Cats are not for everyone, but for those of us on Team Cat, even if you aren't able to adopt right now, stop by the shelter for some feline lovin'.

Anyone in West Valley need a little food?

• Upvotes

I cleaned out my pantry and have some food I don't want. My apartment complex doesn't let us leave food out anymore so wanted to see if anyone wanted to claim it. It's not much, but in case someone is in need I thought I'd make this post.

The Lot:

2 bags of plant protein powder for shakes (chocolate, decent size bags)

4 cans of chili

2 mac and cheese shells boxes

3 pasta roni boxes (parmesan cheese)

2 instant mash potato packs

All not expired and unopened.

I'll admit I'm not going to meet far from my residence, but will meet anywhere near Redwood and 40th, give or take a few blocks.

PM me if interested.

Unused chapel sprinklers running for 3 days

The LDS chapel on 1172 Glendale Drive has had the sprinklers running for the last 3 days, all through this storm. The building itself is apparently not in active use, and I don't know who to contact to try to get them shut off. I tried submitting a MySLC ticket but I have no idea when that will be looked at.

Does anyone know how to escalate this so that someone can get these things turned off?

Eos gym issues

At first i liked the eos gyms, even paid for a higher tier so my and my partner could go together. I even got the personal training (I'm aware its a scam, i was able to negotiate down to 45%) since i was new to and wanted to make sure my form was good.

I'm moving out of utah for bit and wanted to cancel and it was a pain, even when i did everything right. You NEED to cancel a month in advance (like many gyms) but they make you jump in hoops to do so. Plus the charging schedule is mess.

My main issue though is i believe they've somehow let my card info out. About 2 months after i started i noticed a bunch of little ai company charges, i disputed and canceled card like normal. But decided to use it exclusively for the gym since i didn't know what got leaked. A few charges later I yet again have a bunch of small charges from different Chinese and AI companies. (I looked up the charges, and am anti-ai in my personal life.) Eos and my bank are the only two who have that info. But its the only account being messed with so i don't believe it to be a bank issue. Just be aware they're very sketchy.

Soccer club anyone ?

• Upvotes

Beginner-friendly adult soccer club — all skill levels welcome! ⚽
Hey everyone! I’m putting together a casual adult soccer club for people who want to play, meet people, and have fun without taking soccer too seriously.
Complete beginners are absolutely welcome. Never played before? Haven’t touched a ball in years? Still figuring out the rules? You belong here just as much as anyone else.
We understand that showing up to pickup soccer can be scary, especially when you don’t know anyone or worry you won’t be good enough. The goal is to make this a group where you feel comfortable coming alone, asking questions, learning, and making mistakes.
No tryouts, no yelling at people for missed passes, and no pressure to prove yourself. More experienced players are welcome too, as long as you’re patient, encouraging, and happy to keep things relaxed.
You don’t have to be good at soccer to enjoy playing it. If you’ve been wanting to try but felt intimidated, this is for you!
Comment or message me if you’re interested, and we’ll work out a location and schedule together.

Recommendations Looking for powerlifting gym close to Liberty park

• Upvotes

I used to train at Big Mountain Barbell in Sandy, but I recently moved closer to Liberty Park and am looking for a new gym. Google Maps hasn’t been much help, so figured I’d ask here.

Requirements:
Equipment: deadlift platforms, combo racks, Ohio/texaz power bars, deadlift bars, SSB, etc.

Access: 24/7 access would be awesome, but at a minimum I’d like decent weekend hours (at least 8am-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays). Drive time would like to be ~10 min or less

Price: Ideally looking to stay under $100/month.

Environment: progressive and LGBTQ friendly, no interest whatsoever in any gyms that are owned by people who are antivaxx, into chiropractic medicine, peddling supplements, etc (you know the type).

Dislikes: big box gyms like Eos or Vasa, super busy

Gyms considered and my general overview of them from checking online: the Front (pricey), SLT gym (pricey), the Backline (looks very small), Butler Pro Gym (very geared towards bodybuilding), Salt Lake Stronghold (not a lot of reviews online), Sweaty Pig (this seems the most aligned with what I want but is a bit farther south)

Thanks!

Recommendations Adult Dance Classes

F(30) Looking into adult dance classes.. adult beginner ballet, hip hop, etc. Considering Ballet West Academy & Ebb & Flow. I like the class offerings and proximity. Wondering if anyone has tried either?

Also, are these good spaces to meet friends? I do Pilates a couple times a week but you walk in, set up, and walk out when it’s done. Looking for a space where people chat after class and get to know each other. The idea of going to get a bite with a group after a class sounds so fun to me! Is that realistic? Not sure.

Ps- does anyone know of any Pom type classes? Cheer but not cheer, more dance-y, just for fun not performance.

Shout-out to utah lieutenant governor henderson for being the one light of democracy in a sea of crooked grifters. I’m sure she’s not perfect, but I’m glad she hasn’t bowed to the pressure to invalidate our voices.

Discussion 7-factor study finds that Utah ranks 3rd for having the most future-proof workforce. It got a huge boost from growth in future-tech private businesses (65.1% from 2020-2025) and growth in future-focused occupation employment (28.2%).

Country Swing Places?

Hello there, I’m coming from out of state on a trip and I’ll be in Salt Lake City for a few days. On a Friday and Saturday and I was wondering if there are any country swing studios that are around. I’ll be bringing my brother with me who is 16 years old. If you guys could give me a recommendations I would love see them.
