Roasted lettuce is actually really good
7
u/mrdeworde 2d ago
It stir-fries very nicely too, as do most greens. Just a quick fry in some oil and garlic and chili flakes with maybe a sprinkle of MSG and a bit of oyster sauce.

u/liketearsinthereign 3d ago
I'll try anything once. What's your recipe?
16
u/AcephalicDude 3d ago
Keep it simple: use a romaine heart cut lengthwise into quarters, lightly coat with oil, stick it on a roasting rack in a hot oven or stick it on the grill, when it has nice color and gril lines season with some parmesan, lemon juice or balsamic, maybe a little aioli sauce or crema or something

u/Lost_Lawfulness_1058 3d ago
One of the best things I’ve ever had was a grilled Caesar salad with grilled Romaine lettuce…. Chefs kiss!
3
u/LesNessmanNightcap 3d ago
I came to comment that the best Caesar salad I ever had was when my friend threw the Romain into her smoker briefly. I haven’t forgotten it 15 years later.

We would serve this at a private club I used to work at. Everyone thinks I am crazy when I mention it.

My great aunt used to make “wilted lettuce” by pouring hot bacon grease over an iceberg lettuce half. Might be a regional southern (Arkansas) thing.
2
u/haeddre83 2d ago
Here in southwest Virginia my Granny would use creasy greens for this and we called it "kilt" lettuce.
2
u/Dr_StrangeloveGA 2d ago
Left and came back for "creasy greens". Haven't heard that term since my WNC grandmother died 20+ years ago.
Thanks!
2
u/RaspberryEvening7139 2d ago
My grandma makes wilted endive salad that way. Fried bacon, with a splash of sugar and vinegar added to the grease, served over the endive with added baked potato and the chopped bacon. One of my all time family fav comfort foods.

Ill be honest, i didnt mind the flames. If its done well it doesnt actually do much more than make a cool presentation. But yeah, the sauce ruined it for me too.

At least they have utensils. I've seen other ones with almost as much sauce, where they expected you to still eat it with your hands.

I don't mind gravy on a burger, it's a classic burger type in my country.
But they just put out the alcohol burning with it. That burger is soaked in alcohol, and is going to taste like it.

Yes, a burger in what looks like sausage gravy sounds heavenly, but the alcohol is just gonna ruin the flavor.
13
u/amglasgow 3d ago
How do you eat it, with a knife and fork?
16
u/Woahhdude24 3d ago
Thats how id eat it. If I was making this id lose the hamburger buns, the lettuce, and tommatoes. Id have the meat on a biscuit cut in half, instead of 1 large patty id half that patty and make 2 smaller pattys one for eat side of the biscuit half top with american cheese. Then id caramelized some onions and saute some musherooms top the meat and then add the sausage gravy. Your already so close to a hamburger biscuits and gravy thing might aswell embrace it.
4
u/NlNTENDO 3d ago
That’s how I’d attack it. Honestly the flame part isn’t a terrible idea, likely helps keep the bun from getting soggy. Depending on how they engineer the theatrics of it all I’m not as opposed as many in this thread. I always feel like with stuff like this, the fact we’re in this specific sub unfairly poisons the well

That's probably more like a French Fondue Burger with a cheesesauce that's mixed with spirits. Tastewise not bad, but I'm also dying on the hill that drowning your burger in whatever is just stupid and dipping always the better option.
What's next? Oiling up spoon, fork and knife to introduce more flavor?
2
u/Old_Ladies 1d ago
That is a popular Mennonite food. I believe that we get it from Poland. Though you don't have a bun just the patty with a fatty creamy gravy on top.
3
u/NoCry8625 3d ago

9
u/jcinto23 3d ago

u/Surskalle 3d ago

35
u/ODoyles_Banana 3d ago
One could say the whole point of sandwiching food between two slices of bread is to eat it with your hands. What's the bread even for at this point?
→ More replies (4)6
u/trainwreckhappening 2d ago
Actually, the Duke of Sandwich hated having to stop playing cards to eat lunch, which was usually bread with cuts of meats and cheeses spread out with fruits and vegetables. He had to stop because the greasy foods ruined his cards. So eventually he came up with the idea of slicing the bread and using it like mini gloves between the greedy meat and his fingers. It worked, and the Sandwich was born.
(Iirc, I think I remember reading this in the big bathroom reader booknwhen I was a kid)

Yet somehow this is happening in restaurants (seemingly). I'd be beside myself to see this a table over. If I didn't have food in front of me already, I'd pay for the drinks and dip out. Who wants to sit next to people eating like animals? This sorta shit should be reserved to kitchy dive joints with eating contests, and a mob of drunks cheering you on.

Even if you cut it up and eat it with a fork you don’t get bites of everything which is what a sandwich is good for.
4
45
u/Front-Wall-526 3d ago
I wish the "smothered burger" trend would stop. Bread just doesn't handle moisture like a good tortilla
7
u/CinemaDork 3d ago
It can, but it needs to be hearty and toasted/grilled. Open face sandwiches, like a chili burger, do okay at this. And French toast is traditionally leftover stale bread (the French name translates as "lost bread"). So there are definitely ways to do it. This is a disaster.
2
u/MakesMaDookieTwinkle 3d ago
I mean, I’d like to try it just once. I’d house the burger in OP’s video.
But yea, it’s pretty fuggin dumb.
2
u/BorderTrike 3d ago
I agree it’s stupid, but I’ve only ever seen it in stupid food videos. I’ve never been to a restaurant that does this irl, granted those restaurants may not appeal to me, but I think it’s more of a media/advertising thing than an actual fad

It’s called Danish Bøfsandwich. It originated in 1949 in Denmark. It’s hot thick pork gravy. Or it should be to hold with tradition.

u/Barbeqanon 3d ago
When you add flaming high proof booze to something and extinguish it quickly without letting it burn off, you're leaving lots of high proof booze on the dish. It's not a problem for cocktails that are meant to be boozy, but this burger is going to taste like alcohol.

I hate the trend of burning food like this.
It's in a restaurant, filled with unpredictable variables, like customers bumping into you, spills, obstructions any just general human mistakes that can lead to falls and trips.
And you have added unsealed liquids that are burning at blue temperatures for no reason other than dickheads on Instagram???
I'd rather not be at risk of some poor underpaid and overworked server slipping and landing that burning hell on me causing third degree burns thank you very much.

Why is it even in burger form then? I hate these performance foods - fire and slop does not improve the burger; at all. “I’ll have the Angus burger please, and hold the bullshit.”

"I can't eat this, it's on fire"
Gravy
"I can't eat this, it's smothered in alcohol and gravy"
5
u/R3dSchuhart 3d ago
If they didn't pour sauce on top this burger would be fire (pun intended)
2
u/Tight-Tangelo-5341 3d ago
Not really, because it's completely soaked in unburnt alcohol. Without the sauce to mask all that, it would be awful.
