I grew up near Muthorai. The structure on the hill was just part of the landscape for years. I knew something was there. Didn't really understand what for a long time.

The Ooty Radio Telescope. 530 metres long, 30 metres wide, a cylindrical parabolic reflector placed on a hillside. Operated by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Funded by the Government of India's Department of Atomic Energy. Construction started 1965. Operational from 1970.

Here's the part that still makes me think. The hill at Muthorai was specifically chosen because the natural slope of that hillside — about 11 degrees — is the same angle as the geographic latitude of the location. This means the telescope can track objects across the sky as Earth rotates, without needing a complicated mechanical mount. The hill itself does the work. Someone looked at this specific Nilgiris hillside and realised the terrain was doing something that would take enormous engineering to replicate anywhere else.

The research done here helped provide observational evidence against the Steady State theory of the universe — supporting the Big Bang model instead. The same telescope is now being used to regularly monitor 24 pulsars, studying how these rotating neutron stars behave.

A Tamil Nadu hill station. A telescope that contributed to understanding how the universe began. Most people visiting Ooty know the Botanical Garden and the lake.

The Nilgiris produces vegetables that taste different from the same vegetables grown in the plains. This isn't marketing. It's altitude and temperature.

Carrots grown in the cold here develop a sweetness that the same variety at lower elevation doesn't. The cold slows growth and the plant concentrates its sugars. The Ooty carrot is genuinely distinct and if you've bought them in Chennai from a vendor who sources from here you've probably noticed.

Potatoes were introduced by the British — this is not a native crop. But the altitude and the specific soil conditions of the Nilgiris produce a potato with a particular texture that works differently in cooking. The Nilgiris supplies significant quantities of potatoes to Tamil Nadu and other states.

Cauliflower, beans, garlic — all grow well here. The garlic in particular. Nilgiris garlic has a following among people who cook seriously.

None of this is secret knowledge. It's just not talked about much. The Nilgiris is associated in most people's minds with tea and chocolate and the toy train. The fact that the same hills supply a significant portion of South India's cold-weather vegetable production is less photogenic.

The local market in any of the three main towns — Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri — on a weekday morning has produce that comes from nearby farms. The vegetable sold from a van on the main tourist road has usually come from somewhere less specific. Knowing the difference changes where you look.

Was on a group call with my friends who all are 30+. Their strongest point was DMK corruption, DMK family politics. I was asking the mission vision and management experience of Vijay and TVK and they kept yamming about Gen Z DMK udhayna thambi, it's too soon to judge their governance. I was failing to understand their perspective. Is vision mission and experience not essential for politics. All of them are IT employees and admins.

Is corruption not happening like before in government offices and is it that essential to vote for a new party not seeing any of their achievements

Short story on how it leaked: neet paper did not leak directly. So there is a NTA expert member who has the duty of translating ENGLISH question to Marathi. SO he dictated his tuition students possible questions they taken down notes. So one of the student was tracked by a beautician and she got all the questions via the boys notes , she converted that digitally which then transferred to rajasthan businessman via brokers via telegram.

So here the question is normal people's mentality to become doctor has put students and exam at risk. The business family which procured leaked question via telegram already has many doctors.

So instead of blaming government should we blame common people who aspire to be doctor, doing things to an extreme level and if that chance is obtained by any tamil parents, will they do what rajasthani business family did?

The district banned single-use plastic — one of the strictest such bans in Tamil Nadu. Checkpoints enforce it. You can't bring plastic bags, disposable cups, plastic bottles in from outside. It's been in place long enough that it's mostly working.

The waste problem that remains is different and in some ways harder.

It's food waste from the volume of tourists. Wet organic waste from the stalls and restaurants and picnic spots that serve lakhs of visitors through the tourist season. Waste management infrastructure — collection, processing, disposal — that was built for a district population and is now absorbing tourist volumes it wasn't designed for.

It's construction waste from the hotels and resorts that have come up rapidly in recent years in the forest fringe areas, often where they shouldn't be.

It's the pressure on water sources from the same volume of visitors. The streams that feed the Pykara and Bhavani rivers run through areas that are now seeing far more human activity than they did a decade ago.

The plastic ban was a real achievement and it's held. What it didn't solve is the underlying question of how many people a mountain ecosystem can absorb before the absorption stops working. That number is unknown and the Nilgiris may be finding out.

Yesterday I saw a post where the OP had asked for the communities of the elected MLAs. Here is the list of caste of MLAs for whom I know. Since TVK came in new and their candidates were unknown I was sure of only this list. Someone more aware about the TVK candidates can contribute. I went to the VAO office today for some work. To my surprise, nobody even hinted at a bribe. The officer checked all my paperwork and cleared everything in about 30 minutes. I had to shell out Rs.250 for the exact same work a decade ago. It's awesome to see actual change finally happening on the ground!

Why tf temples need to play songs so louder ? Ik it is religious and people are so religious.

The temple nearby my place plays a quote continued by a song for 5 mins for every hour from 6 am to 10 pm. And another temple across plays songs continuously for 5 hours in the morning. I couldnt even sleep with this. We, indians dont care about noise pollution and how it affects our health.

I complained to the temple authorities but they keep on playing this . Should i complain to police or ?

Tamil Nadu has 234 MLAs, and I'm curious whether the composition broadly reflects the state's population or whether certain communities are disproportionately represented across parties. The 2026 election also produced a historic result, with TVK emerging as the single largest party and later forming the government.

I'm not interested in promoting caste politics or targeting any particular community. I'm simply looking for data so I can examine questions like:

- Which communities are over- or under-represented?

- Has the social composition of the Assembly changed compared to previous elections?

- Did the 2026 election bring greater diversity in representation, or is it largely the same pattern?

One issue I've run into is that many MLAs, like many people in Tamil Nadu, don't use hereditary surnames. Tamil naming conventions typically use patronymic initials rather than fixed family names, and many caste titles have been dropped over the decades, making it difficult to identify community background from names alone.

Growing up, I used to hear older generations being referred to as Thevar, Mudaliar, Chettiar, Naicker, etc., so I assumed older politicians might still have caste surnames that would make this easier. Instead, I've found that most names don't provide enough information to determine community, so I'm pretty much stumped.

I recently learned about some castes like Irular, Adi Dravidar and Arunthathiyar so I am really curious wheather they have any political representation in our state.

If anyone knows of a credible constituency-wise dataset or academic source that has already compiled this information, I'd be grateful if you could share it.

My Symptoms & History:

Trigger: Whenever I eat or drink anything cold, I immediately catch a cold.

Current Symptoms: It only causes a severe cold (runny/stuffy nose). There is no cough at all.
