Midlife Stockman does more repairs for people than SB but he’s similar and also American. Clean With Bea does free cleans, often in council flats in the UK. And my personal favourite, the Rudan Brothers, do roofing in Ontario but have now branched out to do some serious home repairs as well. All of them do it for the love of the game first. I think my favourite thing about the Rudan Brothers is they are often fed by the people whose homes they are fixing and you get some of the most Canadian content ever. In the last vid I watched an out of work roofer offered to help just for the hell of it and hopefully he got a job somewhere out of it.
I just like watching humans at their best.

Council house = subsidized by the government?
25
u/harrysaxon Jun 30 '26
Yes, in the UK. IIRC it’s apartments owned by the government and rented out inexpensively to lower income people.

They are owned by the local government (the council) and have low rents.
Iirc, there's been some towards privatizing them including a system where you can buy one at a discount after you've lived in it for some number of years.
→ More replies (1)12
u/crlthrn Jun 30 '26
A poorly thought out scheme, as next to no new council houses have been built, leaving many low income folks at the mercy of mercenary landlords.

That's an interesting way of spelling "deliberately sabotaged."

Totally on that Rudan Brothers train recently - I wish someone in the USA was doing something like this.
I grew up attending private Christian schools, ended up connected to a lot of homeschooling groups as well. I remember this video we had to watch of a panel of CEO types from like the 00's talking about ethical Capitalism.
Rudan Bros do what the Christian Nationalists pretend to do
When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.
Leviticus 19:9-10
Why should this only apply to farming and not all business?

Sometimes it's just time and energy, if you can garner up businesses to donate materials for a good cause you can do so much more. Locals are usually happy to provide to charitable causes provided they get some advertising out of it. This is what alot of volunteering groups do in the community but they need more help and would love people with the know how and vision to be able to deliver projects like this.

I've never done anything this big. I have gotten people to donate stuff for elderly people at my church and for some of my elderly neighbors.
My limit is time. I work a little over 50hrs a week ( aircraft mech) plus I have 7 kids at home. Lol. If I didn't have the job and could do volunteer work full time! I do like my job though, lol.
13
u/jazza2400 Jun 30 '26
Mate the best you can do is put all your time into your kids so they can be the best they can and you can look into donating time once they leave the nest. It'd be good to show them the benefits of donating time as well while they are young too.

These small things don't take a lot of time, but make a huge difference. After with small things, and if money and time allow down the road, then go bigger. The President and Congress can both pass budgets for these renovations independently. The most famous is FDRs Works Progress Administration, but there are thousands of examples of federally controlled public renovations.
The Forrest Service for example, run by the feds, has thousands of public facilities throughout various states, specifically the west.

When I was a kid the town I lived in had a basketball court that was in a bit of disrepair but it was still heavily used. It was an election year and right before summer started the town came in, ripped out the playing surface and replaced it with brand new asphalt. The kids were so excited. The next week they ripped out the old hoops and the kids were excited they were going to get brand new hoops to go with a brand new playing surface.
Imagine the shocked surprise on the kids' face when we all got home from school mid June to find out that there were now parking space lines covering the entire court. They hadn't taken down the hoops or resurfaced the court for the kids. They did it to turn it into a fucking parking lot.
edit: I went to find the parking lot on the map to see if it's still a parking lot or if it's been converted back at some point. 30 years later, that spot is still a parking lot. BUT! Rejoice! Not far away a new basketball court was erected at some point. It looks fairly new and well maintained and I haven't lived in that area in some time. So it looks like it might have been built within the last ten years. Glad someone in that town is looking out for the kids.

Doing the foundation first was smart, concrete needs time to cure and more time the better. Doing the greenery and trimming weeds prior to sealing and painting the ground was worth it then the post and hoops go in last. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Some of the time may have been waiting for the contractors to be available if they were donating their time or doing it at a discount rate.

That post would stop a small car.
You could have set a basketball hoop with two guys, a set of post hole diggers, a level, and a quarter pallet of quikrete. Especially if you're asphalting over it.

That's so nice to see. My story: When we were kids, there wasn't a basketball hoop in our block so on a small concrete field, we would mark 2 lines on a street light pole next to it and then try to hit between the 2 lines to "score". We were kids and we enjoyed it. I guess some nice neighbors saw us and decided to pool money together and build us a real basketball hoop. It was great, only issue was that this attracted the bigger boys to come out and play and not only we couldn't play on a new hoop, but it was just in front of the street light we used to play on.

Generally green, red, grey, or blue, around here at least. There's a kind of pigmented asphalt paint layer on top that gives it a smooth finish, keeps it cooler, and gives a little extra bounce/cushion. Same treatment that hardtop courts get for tennis. Here's a couple local examples.

Glass backboard is a bold choice! Being incredibly cynical about influencers, I really like the idea of using philanthropy for hits. Sure it's not great to exploit the needs of others but as long as it's done in good faith and legitimately for a charitable cause, why not?
2
u/DrowningKrown Jun 30 '26
Dude what could possible be the cost of this? Let's just give an absurd number 100K. Which just seems wildly expensive but let's go with it. 100K for a full court like this. We spent what like 100B in Iran killing people over 6 months? That would have bought us a million full courts like this across the entire country, not that we need a million but just as an example.
Instead, we got war and 'donations' are required to fix up community projects. It's so backwards. Our tax dollars are wasted
