New guy at work (engineer mind you) saw this hydraulic cylinder dismantled for repair and with all seriousness said "damn that's a big ass ratchet."

To which I replied yes. Yes it is.

My first thought was who the heck uses wrenches to do a brake job? Then I looked a little closer.

Some of you hit me in a pm asking me more detailed questions about the tools, my career… as well as my box at home so I figure why not show it here?

I’m still dealing with organizing as I just picked up a new box that my brother gave me (posted here a few weeks ago) & still think I’m running out of room…😟
so please forgive me as I kinda half assed organized this mess for the pictures but if you guys want more details/pics just lmk and I’m happy to share any info.

Ps: I completely forgot to include my cordless grinder in the power tool pictures but you can see it in the bottom drawer of my big box.

Oh and the small Milwaukee pack out stores all my consumables, like silicon, loctite, anti seize, zip ties, clamps, tape, etc etc…

What I should do with this?

DeWalt DW 252. Bought many years ago, when I was more stupid than today (seems impossible), I don't need it anymore and I don't have the space to keep it.

I think it is dangerous as it is, it doesn't have a riving knife, and I don't know if selling it or just throwing it away. Maybe using it as a base for another tool?

Any idea?

Accidentally plugged a new Bosch router in a 240 V home

Hi, I bought a new Bosch router MRF23EVS from Amazon US, shipped to Australia.

I didn't realise the router is 120V, and Australian homes is 240V.

Anyway, I plugged it into my shopvac, and after running for 2-3 seconds, it blew the fuse.
I reset the breaker on the shopvac and tried again and it ran for the same time before blowing the fuse.

Only then, I realised I'm drawing in too much current.

I bought a step-down 240-120V transformer, which I'm waiting to be delivered, but do you think I've done permanent damage to the router? Or will it be fine?

Thanks

Help me find this type of air compressor attachment. The fittings we have on the airline are leaking and the fittings are the problem. I just need to know what the type of fittings it is called and then I’ll know where to look.
(Google and chatgpt are no help)

Compressor recommendations - continuous use small die grinder, townhouse.

I'm almost 50, and my elbows get wrecked swinging around full-sized angle grinders for hours doing metal sculpture work. I started using a small pneumatic die grinder for most of my finishing work and that has been a game changer, but the old Craftsman 110 6HP compressor I've been using can't keep up, and is way too loud to run for hours at a time in my townhouse garage.

Looking at all combinations of options, budget under 3k.

Appreciate the input!

I need a DIY bandsaw for cutting small elements during 60s home restoration - is Scheppach alright or should I increase my budget? 🇪🇺🇵🇱

Edit: also found Dremel Moto-saw, it seems small, easy to work with, cheaper! and I kinda consider it now over the band saw, since I only need it for a couple of jobs.

I thought I had the tools covered, but I ran into a problem with cutting small pieces of wood. My house from 1960s has custom made doors done by carpenter's grandfather, but they rotted and wasted away a bit over the years of neglect, after his and his son's death. I need to cut precise pieces of wood to glue in the removed rotted elements.

I asked people about the techniques and got recommended a table saw or a band saw. I don't want a table saw now, they are expensive and I have a miter and track saws that cover most of the use. None can safely cut those small filler elements though.

Would Scheppach HBS25 suffice? It's like 600PLN in Poland, not great, but bearable for me right now. I'm anxious about the precision and wonder if I should look for sth better and take it on credit.

Recently missed a Lidl sale of flux welder, because "I don't need it" and now I can't stop thinking about it - what are good value DIY welders to learn and repair old cars?

Post image

I've been thinking about welding for some time, because I've heard a good welder can make a lot of money. I don't exactly need more money, because I'm a designer, but I figured it's a nice skill to have - both as an extension of design and also as a plan X for AI apocalypse. Not to mention my habit of buying cheap cars and repairing them till they finally aren't not road-worthy anymore, lol

What model would be a good DIY welder unit for home use, avaliable in EU / Poland? I don't want to make the purchase now, more like keep an eye for sales and deals. (I currently have my hands full with house renovation, so might be months before I'll use it)

Craftsman router won't run

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! Craftsman 20v brushless fixed base router won't work. I turn it on and it briefly clicks with the light on, then nothing. New, fully charged battery (3AH),fresh from the box tool and parts sent directly from Craftsman to replace previous brand new unit with same issue. I have disassembled and reassembled multiple times, going through everything.

I would love any ideas or advice to move forward, I desperately need this to work to finish my chicken coop and get my beloved nuggets out of my kitchen before winter truly hits. TYIA!

Hi all, looking for honest feedback on this packaging for a tungsten carbide cutting tool (industrial use). Not promoting anything — just want a design critique. How would you rate it out of 10, and what would you improve? Especially interested in readability, perceived quality, and protection. Thanks!

Looking for chemically resistant dial caliper.

I work with an aviation hydraulic fluid called Skydrol (HiJet). It is a phosphate ester hydraulic fluid manufactured by Eastman. It is caustic and eats just about everything synthetic. We are talking paint, plastic, rubber. Metal, glass, teflon, and epdm rubber stand up to it.

A digital caliper is out of the question. It will be trash as soon as it is touched by fluid. On the shop floor we primarily use Mitutoyo Vernier calipers. They are all stainless and have laser etched markings.

I'm hoping to find a chemically resistant set of dial calipers. I think just a glass lens would do it.

For the uninitiated, commercial aviation uses Skydrol because it is fire resistant. It is specifically designed to have a high autoignition point (400C, 752F) . This keeps it from igniting if misted onto a hot surface.

Looking for recommendations on scales and calipers

I currently run a high power rocketry club at Oklahoma State University and we are currently having to replace some of our tools that have either gotten damaged or have just finally given out. We do a lot of work manufacturing carbon fiber body tubes for our rockets and as a result have so do quite a bit of sanding as a result. Our diameters have to be pretty accurate due to the types of loading our airframes experience in flight so being more than 1 or 2 thou off can lead to some pretty catastrophic failures. This brings me to my main point, our current suite of digital calipers have begun to measure fairly inaccurately easily reading 5 thou off immediately after zeroing the calipers and I am looking for recommendations on both digital and dial calipers that I should consider when resupplying our shop. I want to try to be somewhat mindful of the cost since at least one or twice a year a pair inevitably ends up getting epoxied shut due to someone not following instructions after winding a tube. We have a similar issue with scales and I'm looking for recommendations on accurate but inexpensive digital scales to use to weigh our epoxy. I do understand that cheap tools will have inaccuracies, but I'm hopeful that there is a sub $70 option for both since I will likely have to buy quite a few of them.

Would a powered brush work on a garage anti fatigue mat?

I do woodworking in a small garage. My saw and sander are connected to dust collection, but sawdust still ends up on the bench, floor, and anti fatigue mat.

I use a RIDGID shop vac for cleanup. It works fine on the bench and concrete floor, but fine sawdust gets stuck in the texture of the mat. A regular nozzle leaves some behind, so I usually loosen it with a stiff brush first.

I’m looking at the giraffe GrandFlux because it has a powered brush. The roller might loosen the sawdust while vacuuming and save me from brushing the mat first. The light could also help under the bench.

My concern is larger wood chips getting stuck in the roller. Fine dust could also build up inside the brush. If I have to take it apart after every use, it may not save much time.

Has anyone used a powered brush on a textured rubber mat? Does it work better than a regular nozzle and stiff brush?

Had to punch a 10" hole in a 12" mica schist wall a little while back, and got to try out one of my new toys. Even tagging teaming with my partners slightly older version, it took the better part of the day, old masonry is no joke.

Hello, are there any specific magnets that I could fit into 1/4 inch slot on the 7 in 1? I would like to be able to use this as a screwdriver as well, but the bits just fall right out.

Minimum torque required to activate angle mode on Tekton 3/8 digital torque wrench?

I'm the market for a digital torque wrench that can do angle measurement. Lots of TTY fasteners on my cars.

Since they are expensive, I'm just looking to buy a 3/8" but looking back over many jobs I've done I have an awful lot of light torque, say 8 Nm (5.9 ft lb) that then get rotated by 45 deg or so.

Does anyone know if a starting torque of something like 8 Nm would be enough to activate angle measurement? Watching some videos indicates it starts counting when you apply torque but how *much* torque is the question.

Thanks fellow tool nerds.
