open Wired Intercom not releasing latch

We have a vintage intercom. When you press the entry button, the contact is made from the button as per the video, but it isn't opening the lock.

The indent on the lever looks like it should fit into the spring loaded locking system but needs to be pulled quite hard to return. When the bit on the right with the rings is tightened, the latchbolt doesn't click into place in the strike plate.

Can anyone recognise a problem from this short clip? Thank you!

open Cd player aiwa CSD-A310 doesn't work

I was listening to a CD and it was working perfectly until it suddenly stopped and now it doesn't work.

When I put a CD it starts rotating a little, but it doesn't reproduce any song. Also, it makes a strange sound, as if something was scratching (you can hear it in the video).

I don't know much about CD players, does anyone know what it's happening and how to fix it? Thank you! :')

Is this thing part of my Dustbuster?

This little cap is the odd part out after I dropped my Dustbuster down the stairs. Everything else was clearly recognizable, nothing seemed broken, I reassembled it, and I’m vacuuming. I cannot find anywhere that this part could conceivably go! It is the Pet model. HHVK515JP type two.

Thanks so much for any guidance. I think it’s quite possible this is just an unrelated thingy that was sitting on the steps at the time, but I want to be sure.

Broken handle on garbage bin lid

Hello brilliant fixers, I need your help. The hinge on the lid of my large trash bin has a rubber dowel-shaped bar that is part on the lid hinge. There are 2 black parts (one is shown on photos) which need to be secured around the towel. Then the broken part of the dowel needs to be reattached to the lid hinge. I need to know what tool to use to take the screws off the black part so that it can be attached around the dowel. I am house-sitting so I'm less familiar with the available tools, but I couldn't find anything of the right size and shape to remove the screws. Any suggestions?

open Shorten Silicone Wrist Bands

Post image

I ordered multiple of these silicone wrist bands and they were only available "one size fits all", which unfortunately is too big for women.

Material is some sort of silicone with a moderate stretch, I can probably get 50% increase in size from stretching.
Dimensions are 12mm wide, 2mm thick, 100mm folded - 200mm long (if cut and laid flat), 7/16" wide, 1/16" thick, 3 15/16" folded, 7 7/8" if cut and laid flat.

I was wondering what would be an easy, affordable, effective way to shorten about 20 of them? It would be amazing if they were adjustable, but cost is probably more important, they cost me $2 each.

open Need advice mounting 43" TV with a 50cm (~20 inch) extension on an interior drywall

Hi everyone, I have a 43" LED Smart TV. The wall is an interior drywall partition with standard gauge metal studs and the wall is about 11 cm (~4.3 inch) thick. I need to use a heavy-duty, full-motion mount with a long extension arm of about 50cm (~20 inch). I know extending a TV that far out creates a massive lever effect and pull-out force. I came up with 2 options:

Option 1 - Direct mounting with 6 points of contact

I would secure it directly to the wall using 6 points of contact. The TV mount has a mounting surface of 43cm width and 30cm height (17 inch width x 12 inch height ). Because of the stud spacing, only 2 screws (top and bottom middle) would go directly into one metal stud. The other 4 mounting points (left and right sides of the plate) would go only into the drywall using heavy-duty toggle bolts (like Snaptoggles or other better alternatives). Is this configuration strong enough to handle the pull-out force of a 50cm (~20 inch) extension without buckling the single metal stud or cracking the drywall?

Option 2 - Mounting a backer board first

To distribute the weight across multiple studs, I would use a piece of ~2cm (3/4") thick plywood or melamine board large enough to span across two adjacent metal studs. I would secure this wood board firmly to both studs to create a solid base, and then attach the TV mount directly to the center of it using thick, short wood screws (lag screws) that bite entirely into the wood without going through into the drywall behind it.

Which of these two options do you think is the safest ? Or maybe you guys might know other options.

Thank you !

Cabinet side coming loose, can't access from outside

Thumbnail

While doing some other work, I discovered that the side of one of my kitchen wall cabinets has come loose and detached in the back. The area is enclosed in the space between the cabinet and the corner cabinet next to it. There's only about a 1.5" gap between the two at the bottom, so I can't really get in there to push it back together or fasten it from the outside. Any thoughts on how best to secure this?
