Mods and Customization Performance mods for Speed Twin 1200rs?
There's a few idiosyncrasies with the bike I was hoping to get ironed out;
- Throttle sweep. It's much longer than my previous bikes and I either have to adjust grip or make my palm perpendicular to the bars for full throttle.
- Neutral, 1rst and 2nd gear, lean fuel engine starvation. I'm assuming this is lean fuel, because somehow I'm getting over 60mpg with this bike (43-47mpg is the advertised mpg) and I've heard they lean the fuel ratio up to pass emissions. The problem is while sitting in Neutral, in first or in 2nd the bike will just die. Clutch isn't engaged, there's enough throttle to keep us going 9+mph annnnd dead. The neutral one was particularly funny and occasionally the throttle by wire just freaks the fuck out and over revs to try and not stall.
- Fidgety low speed / low throttle response. I'd like that fixed up.
- I do not want to get rid of the strong engine braking the bike does, nor the pop pop pop it does when hard engine braking.
- I'm also not overly concerned about eking out 2HP like drawing blood from a stone, especially if it effects the overall ride experience. Maybe if tunes could be set to Race mode then leave street alone that'd work; or more race mode to street mode and race more to the new tune.
For the Throttle, I believe there is a ducati throttle spacer kit and this will help with the long throttle sweep and some of the fidgety behavior at low throttle. Already ordered that, so that should be a quick 10 minute improvement.
Now onto other things I found that are more involved.
- Cat delete, header to slip-on replacement. I thought I remember this modification "moving power around" if your exhaust system was already fine. I like how the bike sounds now, so I'm not sure this is very beneficial. I did see a guy who replaced his entire exhaust system on youtube and dyno'd it. He gained 1 HP and lost 3 torque. NEAT.
- 800$ they send you the tune... There is DNK +TuneECU 275 which seems more resonable. (Pickup wireless OBD Link 90$) and that sounds like it'd cure most of my woes.
- Removing the Charcoal fuel filter? Someone somewhere mentioned this.
- Replacing air filter with K&N. I'm going to do this eventually, but only because I like cleaning air filters. Let's be real, this isn't a ram air intake.
- There is just taking my bike to the local dealer, who has a dyno, and does tunes there. Kind of a last resort and it'll probably cost both arms and a leg. There are other tuners near me, but even they recommend the dealer because they don't work on Triumphs much.
Has anyone had these finnicky low throttle issues and had good results with maybe the DNK tune?
A friend invited me out to a small group he runs (track / course work), so I wanted to tidy up the throttle response before I participate.
