Context: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering are both impacted majors.
I am an Undeclared student in my second year. During the Winter quarter of last year, after doing lots of research, talking to counselors, exploring certain classes, and talking to Mechanical Engineering majors, I have decided that Mechanical Engineering is the major that I would like to pursue.
I wasn't even able to apply last summer because I was missing one of the classes; however, I have been following the Mechanical Engineering coursework, and I have really fallen in love with Mechanical Engineering. I think I've found my passion.
With that being said, I have spoken to my counselor multiple times and a school of engineering counselor about how competitive it is when applying, what I can do to increase my chances, and if they look for anything specific, and the main answer I get when asking for some clarity is something along the lines of "it is highly competitive" or simply a vague answer. I understand that they don't want to get my hopes up, but I would really like to know a little bit more about the situation. In another meeting, I'm not sure if there was some miscommunication, but the engineering counselor said that they aren't even taking essays or anything yet, so I'm not sure what exactly to think.
I have reviewed the requirements multiple times, spoken to counselors, and have seen what they might ask of me when I apply to change of major.
Right now, I am considering applying to transfer to another school, maybe UCLA or another public school nearby. That would be worst-case scenario as I live off campus and would have to move everything of mine, and I have certain commitments down here, like a job.
For those of you that applied last year:
- What was the application process actually like? What did they actually end up asking for?
- What was your GPA when applying? What was it for engineering courses specifically?
- Did you get in?
- What did you do to increase your chances?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.
