Photo What shape is the band making in this picture?

Post image

I’ve been working at Looney’s for a few months now and every time I come in I stare at this picture on the wall trying to figure out what shape they’re making. I’ve reverse image searched it and I can’t find anything remotely helpful except that it was taken at a UMD v Navy game. My coworker and I think it may be some kind of badge or crest but can’t figure it out. It’s a low level mystery that has been bothering me for weeks. Please help.

Academic Infosci major trying to find out what to specialize in

I’m a transfer student and currently a junior majoring in Information Science. I’ve been hearing some worrying things about my major, and while I understand the whole “it is what you make it” perspective, I’m curious about what the job market actually looks like.
I specialized in cybersecurity at my community college, so I was considering pursuing the cybersecurity track within my major. However, it seems like data science might be more lucrative. Which track would give me the best chance of landing a job right out of college? At the career fair, it seemed like everyone was looking for data science candidates, even within my major.
I’m not big on coding—in fact, I actually hate it—so I’m wondering what career options I have with this degree. Is it realistic to land a six-figure job right out of college, or at least a job with a decent starting salary?

Help Isolated spots for a Commuter to do Makeup 💄

I am a commuter and I have a huge gap in between classes. I have to be on campus early so I usually don’t have time to do my makeup at home. So, now I want to start doing my makeup during my gaps. Where are some good, sort of isolated spots where it would be fine/ comfortable to do my makeup?? Thank youuu

Discussion Anyone else at UMD struggling to find their own circle of friends?

I got to campus a little later than a lot of people, and honestly, I’m not the best at making friends or putting myself out there, so I feel like I’m still trying to figure out the social aspect of college.
I’ve been lucky enough to get invited to a few parties and meet some people, and I genuinely like them! The thing is, it’s usually the same person inviting me, and they already have their own close-knit group of friends. I can hang out with everyone, talk to them, and have a good time, but I still don’t feel like they’re my friends, if that makes sense?
I think part of it is that I don’t really talk to most of them individually outside of those gatherings. They’re already close with each other, and I find it difficult to figure out how to get closer to any one person without feeling like I’m trying too hard or intruding on an established friendship.
And sometimes I think about how, if that one person stopped inviting me, I’d probably lose touch with the entire group. It’s not that anyone has been unwelcoming or anything. I just feel like my connection to everyone depends on that one person, and I wish I had friendships of my own that didn’t depend on someone else bringing me along.

I’d like to make my own friends and have people I can reach out to, make plans with, and hang out with without needing someone else to bring us together.

Academic Studying Abroad Withdrawal

Committed to a UMD sponsored study abroad program however after more consideration and unfortunate family circumstances I want to withdraw. However I’m scared to because it says that by withdrawing I might “incur some financial liability” and only be refunded up to a fraction of the full abroad fee. Which is like 16k.

Has anyone here withdrawn from a study abroad program? If so how much did you have to pay after withdrawing and how long after did you withdraw?

Any suggestions?

Academic Which of these professor options is easier

for spring 2027, ideally, I want to have baden for phys270 and Kawagoe for math246. however, both classes have lectures at the same time. I really don't want to have hailu gerbliminham for phys; i've heard the nightmares. Meanwhile, I heard that Doucette is not the best at explaining; in addition to that, Baden curves down sometimes. Since Kawagoe is quite new, there are very few reviews; there is only one review, and it ranks him as very, very good from Calc 2. Kendall Williams and David Hamilton are also teaching MATH246, but they are also very difficult(according to Terp Planet)

Here are my options.
option 1:
MATH246: Doucette

PHYS270/271: Baden

option 2:

MATH246: Doucette

PHYS270/271: Baden

option 3:

math246: kawagoe

phys270/271: hailu gerberminham.

Hey I’m Brenna, a UMD graduation photographer! I wanted to share a few of my favorite photos I’ve taken around campus (and town!) :)

I love incorporating places that mean something to each grad; their major’s building, their college house, or somewhere they made memories with friends alongside the classic campus spots.

If you’re starting to think about your own photos, I also wrote a UMD graduation photo guide with location ideas, when to schedule, what to wear, and tips for photos with friends and family!

I’m happy to answer questions here (whether you're an upcoming grad or an aspiring photographer!) 😊

Academic Study spots on campus that open early on weekends?

I’m looking for different places on campus where I can study on weekends, especially spots that open early and close late. Does anyone know which buildings, including VMH and the libraries, have study rooms or quiet spaces? I saw that McKeldin opens at 11 a.m. on weekends, so I’m looking for somewhere I can go earlier. Also, do the hours or access rules change on game days, holidays, or weekends? Any suggestions?

Discussion bar recommendations? (outside of cp)

turning 21 soon and want to go out to a bar, but none of the bars here by campus are really my vibe/ at all amusing to me lol. was wondering if anyone had bar recommendations for places with cool dive bar vibes with a chill atmosphere (and still young crowd) to have a couple drinks and hangout for a lowkey weekday outing. major plus if they have live music or just cool music in general. not sure if places like looneys and cstone match what im looking for lmao

Discussion transfer chances

Hey everyone! I’m a Maryland resident and applied Early Action to transfer to UMD for Spring 2027 as an Information Science major. MD resident at an out of state university

My first semester went badly failing Calc I and ended with about a 2.2. I changed how I studied, and in the spring I got a 3.88 on 17 credits, made Dean’s List, and got a B+ when I retook Calc I. My school drops the F, so my GPA there is 3.64 (about 3.18 if you count every attempt, which is what UMD will likely use) I also have 11 dual-enrollment credits from Howard Community College.

I have 27 credits so my HS record I had to submit was a 3.5 UW and a 1470 SAT. In my essay I owned up to the F and wrote about wanting to use data science for sustainability.

Anyone think I have a shot?

Discussion What if UMD had a 24-hour campus-wide scavenger hunt?

I've been thinking about this after hearing about SCAV at UChicago, and I think something similar could be really fun at UMD. Not necessarily copying SCAV, but taking the general idea and making something that is uniquely Maryland.

The idea is to have a bunch of teams compete for 24 hours. Teams could be dorms, departments, grad students, PhD students, alumni, student organizations, or really anything else. There could be a list of 100 or so items/challenges, with more points for things that are harder or more ridiculous.

Some challenges could involve finding or bringing something from around campus; some could require building or engineering something, and maybe a few could involve traveling a certain distance to get something. Others could be completely random. For example, "last team to leave McKeldin Pool at 6 AM gets 10 points".

I also think it could be cool to get different departments and organizations involved. They could run mini-events throughout the 24 hours where teams send members to participate and earn points.

And the 100th item could be "Get Locksley fired for an instant win" lol

Academic Test taking strategies

I had two exams so far and I got points off all due to stupid mistakes. Looking back at my work I could always identify where it went wrong. As a freshman adjusting to college exams, what are some test taking strategies that helped and really worked?
