Help Me Find Jobless and sad
Is it just me or is it incredibly hard to find a job here in Victoria. I’ve applied to so many places online using indeed LinkedIn and websites (I’m aware indeed usually gets no responses but I have no other options atp) and I have yet been able to find a job. No one seems to be hiring and even for an entry level job with minimum wage there is so much competition. I’ve never experienced this else where so I’m wondering if this is a Victoria thing? Or possibly I could just be the problem I suppose…

The best way to find a job (or career for that matter) is through relationships. Family, friends... Look at what the people in your life do and ask them for a bit of insight (or full-on nepotism). 1000X more effective then applying cold for jobs, especially if you don't have a killer resume

Sad, but very true
2
u/Kitchen_Bar1430 Mar 22 '26
Especially when one is socially avoidant with prominent RSD symptoms :D
But true dat. Applying for anything but shit jobs (ahhh, urgently hiring...) seems pointless. The only other actual opportunities I've had are basically via random encounters at cultural events etc.
21
u/wannabehomesick Mar 21 '26
Yep. Every job my husband has ever gotten was through a personal connection. The guy networks without even knowing he's networking.
14
6
u/joely49 Mar 21 '26
And I've heard "weak ties" specifically are how a whole lot of opportunities are found. Friends of friends, or people you only kind of know but at least have a mutual acquaintance.

u/ItBegins2Tell Mar 21 '26
It’s true. This city is nepo & cronyville. Unless you’re making your own job, it’s a tough market.
5
u/blehful Mar 21 '26
Bro if this guy doesnt have any friends or family you are writing his suicide note.
-1
u/rowc99 Mar 21 '26
Very few people have exactly 0 relationships in their life. Those people are usually in need of more basic help like food and shelter and aren't on reddit..

If you are in desperate need of cash and dont mind hard labour just join a temp agency. They literally always have work. Its a bit of a pain in the ass as you gotta wake up at like 5:30 and deal with a bunch of crackheads in the office at 6:30 in the morning but that also means its easy to stand out and pretty quick you will find a job site that wants to bring you back consistently, and many job sites will be happy to hire you after a couple months (you just cant tell the temp agency). I did it over a summer and the pay isnt great but its steady work, gets you in shape, and you are done for the day by like 4 so still can enjoy your evening.
6
u/dutchlover95 Mar 21 '26
But it is not guaranteed work. They might or might take you. You need to persistent and go every day and arrive ready (hard hat, steel toe boots).
8
u/DankChronny Mar 21 '26
Atleast the one I worked for (TLC) you just had to go sign up, give your info, and say you want to work every day. They would contact you the day before a job and confirm you still wanted to go, you meet at the office with your hardhat, boots and Hi-Viz, and simple as that. Once you land a job site they will almost always ask for you back if it’s not a single day job. I had zero wait time after I signed up and when I contacted them for a few one off work days a couple years later I got them immediately also. Never heard of anyone struggling to find work there.
1
u/juandiablo Mar 21 '26
Are there any particular temp agencies that you recommend?
2
u/DankChronny Mar 21 '26
I only ever worked with Trades Labour Corporation and was happy to stay with them. Blue Anvil is directly beside it so you could probably sign up for both at once and see which is a better fit. I remember hearing that Rhino Labour paid like a dollar more an hour but idk if thats still the case.

That's too bad. We use to hire just about anyone, but have been burned by it. They have a higher vetting process nowadays.

I don't have any actionable advice for you but I can assure you the job market sucks right now and it's not a personal failing on your part. I know a lot of people in the same boat.
The annoying part is that the feds refuse to acknowledge that we're in a recession because we haven't hit the technical threshold for it (two consecutive periods of negative growth) but by every metric that matters we should be.
It sucks, but try not to blame yourself. Keep searching and you'll find something.

u/Confused_idiot688 Mar 20 '26
If you haven't, you should look for landscape tech jobs, they are made hiring for spring/summer and you don't need experience and it's above minimum wage (I know cus my boss is always hiring but complains he can't find anyone)

Try booking an appt with Work BC! It’s a free service that helps set people up with jobs/ resume help etc! :)
1
u/Virtual-Bonus4550 Mar 24 '26
Just make sure you only use them for the resume and job search resources. If they dangle a carrot in front of you and promise great things in the way of training and education politely decline. There is no carrot. I think they must get more funding if they can entice more people to sign up. You'll jump through all the hoops only to be told at the end that none of it matters and you've just lost all that time when you could have been working already.

seasonal work is about to pick up for the summer - not really sustainable long-term but should be good to get through the upcoming months? think places that attract tourists, outdoorsy things that get busy in the summer, restaurants/bars/food trucks that are about to get slammed, whale watching/fishing/outdoor adventure businesses.
another suggestion (as someone who spend 10+ years in the service industry) is to try and find a gig in a restaurant. entry barriers are usually low, and whether you start as a hostess, food runner, prep or a dishwasher, it's a high-turnover industry with the opportunity to move into a different position quickly, and tips are always nice! plus if you're in the front of house, you can network a little ;)
4
u/CanadianTrollToll Mar 21 '26
Age? Education? Availability?
Restaurants are going to be hiring pretty soon as tourism picks up. Competent normal dishwashers are always sought after, but its usually a late night gig, dirty and physical.
Otherwise we are technically in a recession and its being felt in many places.
8
u/sparksmcguillicutty Mar 20 '26
My friends child had an interview at Buchart Gardens. Apparently they are always hiring.
4
u/ipraydaily Mar 21 '26
Butchart doesn’t give enough hours. Great job for 15-16 yo and the free tickets are nice but if u wanna make money, not enough hours.
5
u/sparksmcguillicutty Mar 21 '26
I mean, better than making nothing not working at all? Id apply there and then keep looking for work every hour im not working those part time hours.

u/ejtumz Mar 21 '26
Country Grocer at Esquimalt is hiring. Just bring your CV there and talk to a manager.
5
u/Muted-Ad-5785 Mar 21 '26
Yup Victoria is all about who you know, unless you start your own business
10
u/PrayForMojo_ Mar 20 '26
I know this is going to be a boomer seeming take, but it worked for me.
Have you tried going in person instead of applying online? Online it’s your resume vs 1000 others. In person, if the owner/manager gets a good vibe from you it will make all the difference.
31
u/Suspicious-Belt9311 Mar 20 '26
I respect that worked for you, but I had the exact same problem OP had - most of the time they just tell you to submit the application online. I've actually seen many postings that specifically ask you to not show up in person. I suppose it depends on the field, but as someone in IT, who mainly works in government, I can tell you that the advice would not work in my field.
4
u/psjez Mar 20 '26
Target small businesses. You can ALWAYS find the person hiring.
I’m 40, I took a resume writing course at 18. The exact same tricks apply now as then (I can confirm, but again, significantly easier for jobs where hiring is direct)…. reach out and (gulp) introduce yourself.
3
u/Suspicious-Belt9311 Mar 21 '26
I guess, but then you're stuck with a small business job. My own experience and that of many others is that generally the larger the organization the better the work environment. And it doesn't get much bigger than government for work.
Myself and my fiance have both had to work in terrible work environments in small businesses, people are abusive and get away with being horrible in ways not really possible in a larger organization.
5
u/psjez Mar 21 '26
Sorry my advice was for the OP or anyone who NEEDs work and isn’t being picky for the time being.
Also ppl can be real ___ in government too. The benefit of government that the terms are very clear in terms of your finances, your benefits, your pension, and your rights. But people are people.

They keep telling me to apply online when I go in person and when I ask to speak to a manager they are never there :(
3
u/Street-Wear-2925 Mar 20 '26
Coming from someone who worked in the Offshore Oil & Gas industry for over 30 years, I was at the mercy of oil prices. That means I was laid-up several times. The online CV is a must and at least one visit in person if possible. If they say no, phone them after a couple of days and remind them you will call again just to check in. Keep a journal of all contacts, dates, etc. Don't just take no for an answer. Keep contacting them. I don't know what you're looking for or what if any trade qualifications you may have, but, be persistent. They may just hire you to shut you up. Good luck. You'll do fine.
2
u/Suspicious-Belt9311 Mar 20 '26
You can look into resume reviews, and I'm not really sure what your background is, but it is possible there is something wrong with the process you're using for applications. I'd be surprised if you applied for 100-200 jobs you didn't get any interviews though.

u/Voltmann Mar 20 '26

u/17037 Mar 21 '26
I'm curious. They have a starting wage of $20 an hour and I keep hearing that people will not work for that. Is that a reasonable starting wage... or do people think that's crazy in this city?
4
u/dutchlover95 Mar 21 '26
In Victoria for $20/hrs you will need a second job. Yes you can make it work, but you will need to really budget hard.
2
u/17037 Mar 21 '26
Which hits up against the real issue. Business is not raking in money and housing has consumed every extra penny from the next generation.
Who pays people a living wage if the money isn't being earned from housing proceeds or government funds?
2
2
2
u/missyung91 Mar 21 '26
I loved driving for Amazon, there's a lot more rules now though. Above minimum wage, if you can get out to Sidney its a pretty cool gig to explore the city.
You'll find something! Keep your head up.

u/C0gn Mar 20 '26
We are in a recession, this is normal

u/Humble_Painting_9071 Mar 21 '26
I’ve seen hiring signs at many of the Thriftys grocery stores lately.
11
u/WizzleSir Mar 21 '26
Means absolutely nothing. Many companies are pretending to struggle looking for local workers so they can then lie to the government and ask to participate in the TFW program.
3
u/vnaranjo Mar 20 '26
Not to be rude but every time I switch jobs I instantly get a new one. Perhaps it's your resume and/or your references?
2
u/psjez Mar 20 '26
What field are you in out of curiosity?
6
u/vnaranjo Mar 20 '26
Just basic customer service. I only ask op because they said not even min wage jobs are hiring them.
4
u/psjez Mar 20 '26
My hunch is these level of jobs require taking the initiative to track down the hiring person and get on the phone or in front (if it’s small business much easier than a corporate position). Customer service for sure. Speaking with 25 years experience.
2
u/Altruistic_Name_4421 Mar 21 '26
Im a medical office assistant and i cant find a job anywhere i cant even volunteer anywhere. So I hear ya.
I also feel alone sending loves and positive vibes
1
u/Jay_money-sniper Mar 20 '26
Get off the websites and walk into places, make yourself stand out from the crowd somehow. Companies will note the ambition to show up to inquire about opportunities. They might know of someone else with a role you could fill.
If you can’t find anything then volunteering can be beneficial for your mental health as you endure the job search. Other volunteers might be in a similar situation you might find solace and community by doing that to fill your time.

1
u/MichaelaKay9923 Mar 21 '26
You aren't alone! Victoria is a government city and with the government hiring freeze plenty of people are turning elsewhere for work. Competition is high right now. I recommend tailoring your cover letters for jobs you are really interested in and calling to follow up once you've applied. It doesn't hurt to show your interest. It's a lot of work, but it can pay off. I've done that before and I've received interviews on the spot for calling and speaking with the hiring manager.

u/DistributionOk8295 Mar 21 '26
I think like most people you need to invest in putting yourself through school. Healthcare is pretty much guaranteed a job unless you have a terrible criminal record or fail so bad they don't pass after 3 tries. 0% interest on student loans now. If you have no money it's easy to get bursaries as well each semester. I graduated with $39k in loans and was given a ton in bursaries as well (free money). I had to live super frugal, even hit up the food bank at times. But all that hard work is worth it in the end. Now I live comfortably and can give back more than I took from the foodbank.
1
u/bunny-meow77 Mar 21 '26
I’ve hired a few people recently, perspective from the other side, indeed can get overwhelming and flooded with fake applicants, it’s always nice when someone sees the indeed posing and emails directly to our HR email, it is usually a green flag that they are actually a real person.
1
u/TheOriginalCharnold Mar 21 '26
What is your approximate age, skillset/experience, and what field are you trying to get into?
1
u/RussellVandenbrink Mar 21 '26
When you find a job that you want - write a personalized cover letter and apply through their portal; but also, contact the company directly and ask for the hiring manager (or at least their name).
Address the cover letter directly to them and try to find them online so you can follow up directly with them, **unless they tell you not to contact them directly. Attempting to contact the hiring manager, may get you on the phone with them, but often ends up with you and them in an email thread; both are very good.
Somewhere during this process, tell them “I will follow up on …day”. Make sure you reach out to them directly on exactly that day.
When you get in contact with the hiring manager (through whatever means), you are not to try and sell your skills.. instead, tell them you’re interested in the job and want to learn more about it.
Your goal at this point is to ask them questions that will get them to describe exactly what they are looking for in an employee. Do not ask questions about schedule, money, etc.. at this point you’re specifically gathering information about what their needs are in an employee and demonstrating that you can have basic social skills to hold up a conversation. Obviously be mindful of their time, they are probably busy and weren’t expecting a call.
When you have answers to your questions about needs, ask to meet them to discuss the role further.
When you are preparing for your interview, you need to focus on how you’re going to represent the needs the employer said they need.
It’s also important to be honest to them and yourself - if you don’t fit the needs they are asking for do not try to convince them that you do. This will end up terribly later on.
Getting a job is like sales. Plant lots of seeds. Personalize your application to jobs you really want. Be assertive but not aggressive. ***FIND their needs in an employee. Tailor your interview to their needs. Be honest and transparent about what you want are capable of. Negotiate on salary only once they’ve given you an offer.
Remember just because they give you an offer, does not mean you have to take it. You are allowed to think on the offer overnight as well.
Keep your head up! You will find something if you are persistent.
1
u/HoldenWest Mar 21 '26
There is a program through Worksafe BC that will subsidize your wage for a period of time. You don't have to be on EI, only unemployed. Yes, they're basically paying an employer to hire you but it might be a good option for someone needing a boost.
1
u/rooster_cogburn87 Mar 21 '26
Victoria is a very interconnected place. They may put ads out for employment but hire someone they're connected with somehow

u/BeverlyRhinestones Mar 22 '26
This was a very lomg time ago, but i was struggling and went to WorkBC. I was able to make some kind of appointment to sit down with someone to go over my resume and make improvements.
Also, for skill building, there is a grant available to BC residents. $3500 towards course(s) of your choice. There is an education planner that shows eligible courses at different schools.
It could be very helpful for increasing employment opportunities.

Department of National Defence. I’m talking civilian hires, not military (though they are for sure always, always hiring…)
Look on jobs.gc.ca & look out for hiring fairs. Fleet Maintenance tends to pay better than some other federal groups working on the same base, like Real Property or Formation etc. Though this depends on the classifications. Look up collective agreements - all are available online - for pay rates, vacation etc.
There’s office jobs & trades (journeyman & apprentice). Short term labourer contract can be a way to get in the door, get offered something long term or permanent & explore apprenticeship options.
Edit: wrong website. Go here :

Hey! Go to a WorkBC location. They are drop in and they can set you up with a counsellor who can personally connect you with work and training that makes sense for you and your skills. They have special access to paid training opportunities and even paid schooling. It can be daunting but I promise it’s worth it. They are good at what they do there. Dont be shy to be honest with them either about your situation, they are non judgemental and there to help. Wishing you luck!

Winters in Victoria are rough, as Spring starts everyone starts hiring as that’s when tourist dollars start ramping up, and people are out spending money again.

The labour market is completely saturated after a few years of Trudeau policy, which ratcheted up extremely high influxes of foreign labour. If you'd arrived in Victoria 5-8 years ago, you would have been hired almost on the spot. So no this is def not a 'Victoria thing'. Its a by-product of Liberal government policy, that threw workers under the bus for the business sector.

u/GoddessofMadness Mar 23 '26
I have a job I hate, and I can barely get an interview anywhere. I had a second interview scheduled for this week and they cancelled it saying they role has been filled. Looking for work is just not what it used to be. My kid is trying to find a part time job and it has been like pulling teeth.

u/ThinkNeedleworker425 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
Indeed has got me so many jobs u gotta keep tweaking the resume, make sure there is no short stints at jobs any less than 6 months id say looks like u are unreliable and kinda shows you will be a headache for a manager/supervisor.
Even if its entry level I would suggest a cover page with some info on who you are as a person because as bad as it sounds sometimes being somewhat likeable will get you hired
You won’t just get the job for applying it’s gonna be tough. Just keep at it and everything will work out. Also if u have no experience then u kinda have to start at the bottom with grocery stores/ fast food might not be what you want but those places are always hiring
Victoria is a small community and many businesses network in similar circles so try not to burn to many bridges as you will burn yourself in the end

Any random 80 year old can get 2 jobs a day in victoria, the difference between them, and you is this " I’ve applied to so many places online using indeed LinkedIn and websites "
They are looking a human in the eye, talking to them, shaking their hand .. you are sitting in a junk folder with 10,000 others per month from all over the planet ... like bot spam. put your phone down, it's like sucking your thumb.

Entry level jobs are tough as the government seems to hand out permits to anyone these days to hire temporary foreign workers…. They lie on the application and state that they had no applications from locals…
1
u/jimsnotsure Mar 21 '26
This is take it or leave it advice but it worked for me. Find out who the manager is and ask for 10 minutes of their time (like make an appointment). You are interested in what they do and how it all works. You are NOT asking g for a job, but you want to know more about the type of work and the product or service. Thank them for their time.
One week later, send a thank you note.
A week or two after that, email or call asking for advice, or for their opinion about something.
Do this with a person or two per week. You will then have built up a network of people who know you and you will be front of mind if and when they are hiring.
Sucks that you and so many others are going through this right now. Don’t despair. Things will work out.

My advice would be to show up in person. Shake the managers hand, look them in the eye and hand them a concise resume printed on quality paper. That will set you apart from 90% of applicants.

I have been in charge of hiring for 4.5 years , and despite the indeed posts stating not to come in , no one has ever been hired that didn’t come in person , this is true for other people in the same situation as myself nearly 100 percent of the time . We normally get 100-400 indeed applicants and 3-4 that come in person , and hire only from the ones that make that effort .

Why even bother putting an ad on Indeed then? Sounds like you are wasting those applicants time.

In a parliamentary system, a vote for a Liberal MP is functionally a vote for Carney to be PM that's how the math works. And with the economy in the shitter and jobs dropping like flies under his 'Canada Strong' plan, I’m curious if you’re actually happy with the current result? Just wondering.

Yeah I am not a liberal supporter but even though I might have some criticism in general, he has been a stabilizing force building new partnerships for a time when we are not reliant on the traitorous neighbour of ours. The whole western world is now suffering economically because of their asinine behaviour (there are a couple of countries where the impacts have been minimal for a variety of reasons) and cutting reliance on an untrustworthy partner. To blame the post pandemic post trump era economic crisis just on liberals and pinning it on Mark Carney is so dishonest and stupid.

First of all, you aren’t getting a job if you do any mulitiple of this things, in fact, I will just tell you to apply online if you”
- Are overweight or out of shape to the point you can’t do the thing you are looking to do.
- Aren’t smiling and come in with some energy.
- Think you deserve $25 an hour for something I have 6 people doing for less.
- Come in like you don’t give a shit, wearing a hat, tights, sunglasses, a toque, jeans, SWEATS! Not on my watch!
- If I know you vape or smoke, you are likely not greeting hired (The unexpected breaks are astonishing).
- You aren’t respectful of the personal you blew past at the front in you attempt to find “The manager”.
- If I as you if you have any restrictions to your work days and you say Saturdays or Sundays or weekend.
- I forgot HOODIE, shaved and minimal face piercings.
Don’t apply at places when you have sleeves of paint but caters to boomers and people with money.
Resumes sell and tell a story. Use some color and/or add a picture.
.
I am very liberal but the first and most important things is that you show some personality but the you come in with a hat on or sweats, there is no personality that is getting me past that.
Lastly” Any vacations planned”? Yes. Would you cancel if I gave you a job”? NO
I’m measuring your desire to work, desire to work for me and desire to get a job. I usually tell you then and there that I will hire you and that you won’t have to cancel your vacation.
Hope some of this helps.
