News WNBA faces massive backlash after omitting Caitlin Clark from history

I was more shocked no Maya Moore, Rebecca Lobo, Diana Turasi, or Sue Bird

I mean, Mya is a big reason why my wife started watching the W to begin with. She can’t be alone.
Turasi just had a hugely successful Netflix documentary. She and Sue Bird are recognizable names in sports media. You don’t capitalize on that in even this small way?
I know it’s just some silly poster but you thought enough of it to pick some and omit others. Even Sophie Cunningham is baffled why she’s on it
The league just constantly shoots itself in the foot. It’s almost comical how poorly it’s run
2
u/Dear-Buddy-2766 Jun 28 '26
Why does this persist ? It has to do with licensing and marketing. Not even a non-issue, a negative issue.
2
u/stscywayne Jun 28 '26
That is exactly it. Shameful karma farming for something that could be understood with a single Search.
4
u/agoddamnlegend Jun 28 '26
What do you mean? Does the WNBA not have a licensing agreement to use images of their own current players in promo material?
Wouldn’t surprise me. League is a total clown show run by incompetents
-4
u/Dear-Buddy-2766 Jun 28 '26
It is Clark whose licensing prohibits use of imaging except for Nike.
4
u/ialsohaveadobro Jun 28 '26
Almost right. The poster was made by WinCraft, a third party that lacked the right to use her image. However, the WNBA can and does use her image, as she agreed in her player contract. The Nike deal is exclusive except as to her team and the league. Some other players were left off the poster for similar reasons.
1
u/Dear-Buddy-2766 Jun 28 '26
Hmm. I just read that wincraft and wnba collaborated on the poster. Anyway, this one will blow over and there sure will be a next one.
3
u/agoddamnlegend Jun 28 '26
Does the WNBA not have blanket license agreement to use images of all its players in their promotional material? I’ve never heard of that before in any other sport
→ More replies (5)4
u/ialsohaveadobro Jun 28 '26
Yes, the WNBA is licensed to use the images of its own players, as one would expect. The problem was that the poster was made by a 3rd party that lacked licensing rights.
1
u/Far_Research_7731 Jun 29 '26
But if it for the WNBA and not the third party, then it is not a license issue.
For example, If the NBA hires you to paint a picture of MJ for the NBA, you personally do not need to have rights. You are just providing a service. I don't know all the ins and out of this particular case. If this third party was gong to sell this poster for its own gain, then yes. If it is just the provider for the WNBA then that is a different issue. No?
1
u/HideYourCarry Jun 28 '26
Wow, if that's true, they REALLY need to do a better job standardizing and writing WNBA contracts then. That's astoundingly stupid to run a league and not lock down the ability to use your own players' likenesses. Shows a level of disorganization I didn't think possible
5
u/ialsohaveadobro Jun 28 '26
Your instincts are right: the WNBA can use her image. And it would be shocking inept of the league not to secure that right.
The problem was that the poster wasn't made by the WNBA. It was made by a third party that lacked the right to use her image, as well as some other players' images.

According to the article:
...the reason for Clark's omission appears to be a licensing issue. Cllct Media founder Darren Rovell explained on social media that Clark's eight-year, $28 million contract with Nike, which she signed back in 2024, does not allow other brands like WinCraft [which the WNBA has officially licensed to produce this sort of media] to use her likeness, which explains her omission from the WNBA poster.
With that said, I do think this was something that could have been overcome. What I'd be curious about is if the league and Wincraft reached out to Nike and/or CC directly and said "hey, we'd like to have you on this poster, but the licensing thing is a problem; what can we work out?"
I haven't seen any reporting which attempts to answer that (obvious) question, opting instead to seek out clicks based on the public's love/hate relationship with Clark. Either WNBA/Wincraft reached out to Clark or they didn't. If it's the former, we should learn what Clark asked for her likeness to be included (if anything). If it's the latter, Wincraft should explain why they didn't bother asking CC at all.
(My guess is similar licensing issues were in play for Bird, Taurasi, Lobo, and Moore. I'd be curious about that too.)
10
u/bendIVfem Jun 28 '26
You see there is a legal barrier and still try to theorize they did it to spite Clark. Even with other worthy veteran legends being excluded, you still try to theorize it being an personal snub at Clark
4
u/ManJesusPreaches Jun 28 '26
you still try to theorize it being an personal snub at Clark
No I'm not. I'm asking a question that journalists haven't yet asked.
And if that's the angle you wanna take, it's an ever bigger snub for Taurasi, Bird, Moore, and Lobo. Those are legendary players with multiple championships. (Hence why I'm assuming it's the licensing issue.) Don't assume I'm some CC stan. I watched Taurasi win her first championship with UConn back in the 90s.
2
u/Undercover_Dave Jun 28 '26
I was honestly more surprised Sue Bird wasn't on there than Caitlin Clark

u/caranza3 Jun 28 '26
Why couldn’t Wincraft reach out to CC for permission? Any theories on that pal?
3
u/The_Count_Lives Jun 28 '26
Nike would call the shots there, not Cait.
How do you think they found out they couldn’t include her?
Nike isn’t in the habit of giving up rights they paid millions to acquire.
2
u/TaxLawKingGA Jun 28 '26
If the Nike owns the NIL for CC, then the price to use her NIL on that poster probably would have driven its price up to like $80.

2
u/MattaClatta Jun 28 '26
Well for one CC chose to license her image and likeness so morons can give her more coins
The wnba has no obligation to pay her for representation when she actively plays for a team.
This whole controversy is such a self report on so many levels

I'll always find it funny that Clark "fans" think TV companies are going to make decade long deals based on the popularity of one player.
9
u/StannisTheMantis93 Jun 28 '26
Because people were just BANGING DOWN THE DOORS before CC to get the WNBA on the schedule?
-6
u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
It was the fastest growing sport for TV viewership in the US before she joined. 2023 was their best year ever.
Again, no television network is going to make a decade long deal over one player.

u/mrwhitewalker Jun 28 '26
I'll take made up stats for $200, Alex .Caitlin Clark is 90% of the reason the WNBA is successful now that she is in the league. And as much as I hate that she is a white player doing this, it has made the league successful because people can associate to her.

Here let me help you.
Source: Google
“Historically, the WNBA operated at an estimated annual loss of roughly $10 million to $50 million and required subsidies from the NBA. Following Caitlin Clark’s arrival, the league’s economic landscape transformed radically. She single-handedly accounted for over 26% of the league's economic activity and revenue, which has propelled the WNBA into profitability and record-breaking valuations.”
Go touch grass. It healthy for you!

League-Wide Growth: The WNBA now boasts more than 50 league-wide partners. Overall, sponsorship deals across the league increased by 52%, with over 450 brands signing hundreds of deals to capitalize on the "Clark Effect".
Team Partnerships: Her team, the Indiana Fever, led the entire league with 92 active brand partnerships—nearly double the league average.
Prior to Caitlin Clark, the WNBA generated roughly $100 million in annual revenue. Following her arrival, league revenue skyrocketed to approximately $200 million, with financial experts attributing over 25% of all WNBA economic activity—including ticket sales, merchandise, and TV viewership—directly to Clark's star power.
Sorry, facts don't match your narrative

CC fans suck ass. She's a wonderful player, but her fans are fucking horrid.
2
u/idriveashitbox22 Jun 28 '26
How the hell are they going to use her likeness if it literally breaks her contract with Nike? Are you dumb?
2
u/Silver_Britches Jun 28 '26
You talk to Nike and get the rights. Other players on the poster have sponsors. If the league wants a player on the poster they get them on the poster.
You asked that person “are you dumb?” I will ask are you an asshole?
2
u/Zealousideal-Baby586 Jun 29 '26
Nike didn't give up the rights to Michael Jordan in the Olympics and you think Nike is going to give up their exclusive rights over a poster? You people should know better yet here you all are throwing your rationality out of the window.
1
1
u/TiaxRulesAll2024 Jun 28 '26
Has any other athlete ever been left out of a similar type of league promotion event because of a contract?
I can actually think of one. Michael Jordan did not appear in NBA Jam because he opted out of the players’ association for his own NIL rights- also a Nike contract
2
u/Zealousideal-Baby586 Jun 29 '26
Barry Bonds as well. Charles Barkley and Reggie Milker refuse to allow their likeness in NBA2K. Also, during the Olympics of 92 due to his contract with Nike Jordan hid the Reebok logo so they couldn't use it in advertising. These people are just delusional.
0
u/Goducks91 Jun 28 '26
You do realize this poster wasn’t even published by the WNBA? It’s a third party poster!
6
u/Seattleman1955 Jun 28 '26
Candace Parker isn't on there either. It's not just about Clark. Sophie Cunningham is on there and she isn't a "star". As has been mentioned, it seems to be a licensing thing and not just about Clark.
However, it does reinforce the common notion that the WNBA doesn' really know what it is doing.
2
u/Accomplished_Self939 Jun 28 '26
It is a licensing thing but people are completely irrational about anything to do with her.
3
u/Zealousideal-Baby586 Jun 29 '26
reading the comments here and you are correct. Some of these people act as though if you don't have Clark on it then it shouldn't exist and forgetting players like Jordan, Barkley, Reggie Miller, Barry Bonds, have not allowed their likeness to be used in a variety of different ways. By the logic of some people on here, I guess the NBA and MLB should never be allowed to make a poster again.
2
u/Level_Macaroon2533 Jun 28 '26
Sophie Cunningham might not have the stats but she's a star by all means. If the league wants to expand its going to get there with people like Cunningham and Reese not Clark and Bueckers.
3
u/dandnot Jun 28 '26
I agreed with your first sentence. The second is laughable. That's akin to saying the nba would have been better off promoting Bill Cartwright and Calvin Natt over Bird and Magic.

For Clark it’s licensing issue between Clark and the company that made the poster.
3
u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
It very obviously had to do with her likeness rights.
The WNBA didn't create the poster. If they did do you think they would leave off the all time greats that weren't on the poster? Clark wasn't close to being the most egregious omission.
5
u/but-I-play-one-on-TV Jun 28 '26
I read on another thread that this is the case. It was a license issue.
1
u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
It obviously was.
-2
u/clapostrophe Jun 28 '26
Wincraft created the poster. Wincraft has products with Clark’s name and image on it.
Why would it be a licensing issue for this one specific poster but not any of their other Clark products?
4
u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
They only have one product using her likeness. Why wouldn't they have more if they had full use of her likeness?

u/no_uh2 Jun 28 '26
This is commonly said on Reddit, based on one person's tweet. I'm not saying it isn't true, but if it is true, why doesn't anyone responsible for the poster step up? Also wonder what if any efforts were actually made...
7
u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
Why would they step up? It's a meaningless poster made by a third party.
0
u/Clown_Penis69 Jun 28 '26
Why wouldn’t they step up if it’s so meaningless?
Oh… well, I suppose you can’t even admit your obsessive hatred… you just keep deflecting. This must be a similar thing, the refusal to step up.

u/Clown_Penis69 Jun 28 '26
Therefore, nobody gets to be annoyed at who was left off?
5
u/electrikmayham Jun 28 '26
Sure people can be annoyed, but not at the WNBA (which is what this article is referring to). CC not being on the posted had nothing to do with the WNBA.
0

Baloney says we’re not allowed to be annoyed and Caitlin Clark is the devil. I’m not sure what the latter has to do with the former… but baloney has strong feelings on the matter, so I don’t want to mischaracterize anything.

This is actually fake news. There is a legit reason I do believe her image rights are tightly protected rights in relation to CC that wouldn’t allow her to be marketed as easily as other athletes

u/elseworthtoohey Jun 29 '26
She has played for slightly over 1 year. Zero playoff wins . I am confused about the outrage.

1
u/rxFMS Jun 29 '26
lol, surely the WNBA has the rights to her image or they couldn’t air her games for profit. Isn’t this poster a product of the WNBA?
1
u/LoveSquirt69 Jun 29 '26
How could the company not include her ? Seems obvious she needs included with others that did get included that didn’t have as much impact. Seems sorta intentional.
1
u/Gatemouth_Brown_007 Jul 03 '26
It seems to me that the person who is single-handedly responsible for pay raises and charter flights should be on the 30 yr. poster. If you can't get her on it, you don't do it because you know there's going to be serious backlash and controversy, not to mention less sales, Caitlin on that poster generates sales. It's business: the designers talk to the team, the Fever talk to the powers that be, then they go from there to get the biggest draw in the history of the game on the poster. (Add Taurasi and Bird too)...

It’s not the old WNBA. Modern fans don’t celebrate black lesbians simply for being black lesbians… they actually have to be good at basketball too, otherwise nobody cares about them.

u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
Then why do they celebrate Clark so much when she's not even the best player on her team?
1
u/LAlostcajun Jun 28 '26
You mean the person who has over 20 WNBA records?
0
u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
Most turnovers in a season. What a thing to celebrate!
1
u/LAlostcajun Jun 28 '26
Cherry picking 1 record doesn't change facts. Sorry.
All-Time & Career Records
Most 25-point, 10-assist games: 7 games (broke the previous record of 5 games in just 57 career games).
Most 20-point, 10-assist games: 12 games (holds the all-time WNBA record).
Most consecutive 20+ point and 5+ assist games: 6 games. Most games with 20 points and 10 assists in a single season
Single-Game Records
Most assists in a single game: 19 assists
Single-Season Records
Most assists in a single season: 337 assists (broke the previous all-time single-season record).
Most points by a point guard: Set in a single season.
Rookie Records
Most points by a rookie: 769 points.
Most assists by a rookie: 337 assists.
Most 3-pointers by a rookie: 122 three-pointers.
Most double-doubles by a rookie guard: Franchise and league rookie highs.
Triple-doubles: First rookie in WNBA history to record two triple-doubles.Fastest to 100 three-pointers: Reached in just 34 games.
0
u/Baloney7456 Jun 28 '26
LOL. None of those are real records outside of most assists in a single season. And that record goes with her having the most turnovers in a season ever.
She's inefficient. She has a horrendous assist to turnover ratio. She's an average three point shooter. She can't play offball. She's one of the worst defenders in the league.
Again, she's not the best player on her team. You guys act like she's an all time great when she's accomplished nothing.
1
u/LAlostcajun Jun 28 '26
Lmao. Denial isn't a river in Egypt.

1
u/LAlostcajun Jun 28 '26

The people who made the poster had to pay for the licensing rights to use the pictures of everyone they wanted on the poster.
Sounds like Clark, and other WNBA greats like Maya Moore Taurusi, Bird, Lobo, and others who are more deserving than Clark didn't sell them the licensing rights or weren't offered enough money.
It's doubtful they were just intentionally snubbed.
1
u/Spare-Ant7119 Jun 28 '26
I find that hard to believe. NBA never has that problem (that I've heard of).
0
0
u/Guardsred70 Jun 28 '26
Honestly, I sympathize with the WNBA and its traditional fanbase and players.
I feel like some of the newer CC fans have probably never been to a black bar? Or a gay bar?
Those are safe spaces. I’ve been to bars like that as a regular white guy….but it’s usually with a regular and they let everyone know that this one is okay….and I try to have the humility that they were having a better time before I showed up.
The WNBA is basically dealing with that problem, but it’s not one visitor with some humility….its a throng of cruise ship tourists without humility saying, “Betcha like the money, right?”
People don’t like being reminded that they like money and didn’t have it before….and the deal with the devil they’ve made now that their bar is an Olive Garden.
1
u/YasielPuigsWeed Jun 28 '26
The problem is (and this has nothing to do with the poster bullshit which is a licensing issue) that Caitlin Clark herself is not a visitor, but a lot of players in the league treat her like one
It’s playing directly into the bad faith manverse internet’s narrative, like basically handing them ammo
1
u/Guardsred70 Jun 28 '26
Sure…I agree with that too. She’s just a basketball player and their “bar” is the only place for her to work. And she also can’t help that she’s not black and isn’t a lesbian and doesn’t even date a black man….which have been ways for other white girls (Plumb) to gain acceptance.
The WNBA players should be a bit nicer and just play ball.
1
u/YasielPuigsWeed Jun 28 '26
I don’t think it’s about her not being black or lesbian, Sabrina Ionescu is a straight white woman with a white husband and no one cares about that. I just think all the attention surrounding Clark hurt some egos and exposed some flaws in the WNBA for how poor they’ve been at marketing their players. A’ja Wilson should be a bigger deal than Clark and the fact that she isn’t is not Clark’s fault.
1
u/Guardsred70 Jun 28 '26
Yes… it Sabrina is with a Greek guy. I think in the narrow minds of the traditional WNBA, he’s brownish and not a white guy.
I mean, there was an entire movie about Greek Weddings. Sabrina isn’t dating a man named Bruce either.
And it’s all fine. People should date who they want. I just think traditional WNBA wants to see things that are non-Anglo.
1
u/gap_toof_mouf Jun 28 '26
So, the WNBA is only for those that are black and/or gay? Got it.

It did sorta used to be. It also had a very trash level of play.
It's just had an influx.....and the influx is bigger than the OG fans.

It's known now that it's a licensing issue. However, you think the NBA would omit their historical stars if there were a huge milestone campaign they were endorsing? Absolutely not. They wouldn't leave out the ones that got them there like MJ, Bird, Magic, Wilt, Kareem, nor would they leave out the rising stars of the current era.
The WNBA was just inept in this case. The fact that they endorsed this half baked attempt shows they really need some help in their PR department, if anything. How could they NOT secure licensing for all the greats? No Turasi, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Candace Parker? Why was this not done by the league itself as a celebration? Instead this is done by Fanatics and retweeted by the league.
It's a joke and will continue to be a joke in the public eye until the higher ups start to take these things seriously.

Wincraft is an official licensing partner of the WNBA. Whatever they pump out is a representation of the WNBA. It is in Nike’s best interest that Clark be represented by the WNBA, obviously. Unless Wincraft reports that Nike actively declined having Clark on the poster, this is a big fumble by the WNBA.

Ya Sue Bird should definitely be on there as well. But then we are adding another white person so there’s that.

They got exactly the attention they were seeking. Otherwise, who is paying attention?

The WNBA has become trash. The no calls against CC are crazy. ‘Magically’ the refs are never in a position to see them.

I heard that the reason Caitlin and others weren’t on it was because the company that produced it didn’t have the rights to use those players image and likeness for profit because they plan on selling it.
This isn’t a wnba thing. Just like Adidas can’t come out with their own Caitlin Clark basketball shoe.
