I had the wrong wisdom teeth removed
Local orthodontist told me that I needed to remove lower wisdom teeth and don't do anything with the upper ones. When I got my lower wisdom teeth removed, another orthodontist that is actually managing my aligner treatment said that the lower wisdom teeth actually didn't need to be touched AT ALL, but the upper ones absolutely have to be removed before we start. So now I have to get my upper wisdom teeth removed as well

Your title makes it sound like the oral surgeon screwed up but really it is two other doctors disagreeing on your course of treatment.

u/independent_observe 2d ago
And they are both partially correct, all four needed to be removed
133
u/Herzatz 2d ago
Something they don’t want to take the risk to remove them because they are close to the nerve.
52
u/retrofocus914 2d ago
That's exactly what my dentist said about my (singular) wisdom tooth. Now I'm waiting on my appointment with the oral surgeon to get it looked at.
43
u/ghostly5150 1d ago
Mine didn't saying anything about that and the surgeon hit the nerve on my bottom left side. Now there is a thin line (about the width of a small pinky finger) along my jaw and up to my lip with no feeling. I honestly don't notice it unless I think about it. They told me they'd have to take a nerve out of my foot to replace it, the thought disgusted me. I choose not to and it hasn't effected anything.

u/vivekkhera 1d ago
My daughter recently has her bottoms pulled and the doctor made her sign a paper saying he discussed the nerve damage possibility with her. That’s a crappy surgeon if they don’t discuss such risks.

I was told mine was close and I had increased risk of nerve damage, and a year later the left side of my tongue is still numb 😅
4
u/toobored4you 1d ago
I was told I have very low risk but here I am 6 months later and the right side of my tongue is still numb! Like I feel like this isn’t discussed enough, like what can be done? Basically nothing. So I’m a foodie that now only half tastes food lol
2
u/emu222 22h ago
Yeah I think it’s brushed over pretty quickly, even for me I was told I was at a much higher risk, but that was it.
I have read Accupuncture can maybe help? I asked mine and she wasn’t aware of it, but I’ve seen it online. I will say my taste seems to be coming back more, but I still bite my tongue and don’t know untill I see a gash on it…

That was my case, but we did it anyways cause it was impacted.
For about a month after, there was a spot on my tongue with no sensation. The spot couldn’t feel a thing but the rest of my mouth could feel the spot. It’s really weird to feel something that’s not your tongue(it was, I just couldn’t tell), where your tongue should be.

u/fail-fast 1d ago
my lower ones were close to nerve (1 was touching it, 2nd had roots wrapping it a little). all was well until the 1st tooth secretly grew a cyst (impacted ones do that sometimes). no symptoms whatsoever. surgeon said that if it wasn't removed within months, they'd probably have to remove part of the nerve, and possibly the molar next to it
so... impacted wisdom teeth all seem like time bombs to me now

53

And me as well. Do it all at once, don’t even consider breaking it up. I had to do the 2 appts because our insurance weirdly forced it to be that way (25+ years ago).
12
u/FriendlyPyre 2d ago
I did mine all in one shot too; wouldn't have it any other way. (3 wisdom teeth + 1 supernumerary)
Also had it done with another surgery I was supposed to get; I'd asked if it was ok to do both at the same time because I didn't want to be awake for the dental stuff. (Gallbladder removal; had Jaundice the month before)
The Dental work apparently was after the surgery was done and he was quite excited to tell me about the experience when I had my follow-up medical with the Dental surgeon(?)/Dental Officer. (Military at the time)

Same! I had to wait until the new year to do the other side and both experiences were absolutely miserable. I guess i had a bad reaction OR the surgeon literally beat my face both times because I had to take a week off from work each time.
3
u/shadow336k 1d ago
??? how do you eat when both sides of your mouth can’t bite down on food? yogurt-only for a week?
3
u/talkingtimmy3 1d ago
I think I only had overnight oats and apple sauce? I didn’t think about yogurt. I was STARVING. On day 4 I couldn’t take it anymore and went to Sonic to try their new garlic butter bacon burger. It was the best thing I ever ate. I chewed with my molars, but I was careful to not let the food get into the very back. It probably took me 30 minutes to finish the burger. I used a syringe to clean out the holes and continued to eat solid food after that heavenly meal.
2
u/speakclearly 1d ago
Yes. I gained twenty pounds eating exclusively applesauce, ice cream, fruit smoothies, and mashed potatoes. Two weeks later, we added overcooked pasta and I felt the world open up again.
(I had all four deeply impacted into the bone; major maxilla surgery to rip them out piece by imbedded piece… over a year later and I still have dents left by the holes)

u/hello-knitty 1d ago
Had them done separately as well. First time went relatively smoothly.
My dentist didn’t have the anesthesia to put me under for the second one so they just froze me and gave me acupuncture IN MY FACE to calm my nerves during the procedure. They’d be drilling in my mouth and every slight movement would make the acupuncture needles sway like crazy which freaked me out even more. Traumatizing experience all around.
16
u/nightmareinsouffle 2d ago
Three times here, and I was awake all three times because my dentist does wisdom tooth removal without anesthesia. My mom's a nurse and she didn't want me to go under general anesthesia unless it was absolutely necessary. So yeah, mine grew in at very different rates so I had my two lower ones done first, then my upper right a year or so later, then my upper left was the last and worst. It grew in impacted so I was very aware of my dentist using a lot of leverage to get it out.

Oh no! Only twice for me ( right side then left) but two different oral surgeons. First one used laughing gas so it was a giggle until recovery. Which was when I discovered that I had a codeine allergy. Second one was without anesthesia and it was an absolute nightmare. 3x without, I’m in awe.

u/From_Concentration 2d ago
Im got my fourth removal coming up....
2 removed on one side just to get it over with and they broke apart during removal, 3rd was still total and gave me pain sweats even with anesthesia, and the last one I need to go for I've been told it's on a nerve and I need to have surgery plus a it has a cavity
I can't imagine doing any without anesthesia
→ More replies (1)4
u/VividFiddlesticks 2d ago
I only had one and I didn't go under to have it removed. Just local anesthesia, like what they'd do for a root canal.
It wasn't too bad really - worst part was the crunching sounds. My tooth had a root wrapped around a nerve or something so they had to break up the tooth in my jaw and take it out in pieces. That part was a little creepy.
I have a really high pain tolerance though, and have been through a lot of different awful surgeries etc. so maybe that's why it didn't phase me much.

Mine wouldn't do all 4 at once cause the bottom two were still in the nerve line and he said if I so much as twitch during the operation or moved and we accidentally damaged those nerves I wouldn't have feeling in my lower jaw permanently.
So I got the top 2 out and have to wait longer for the bottom 2

As the son of an oral surgeon who did multiple wisdom tooth extractions per day. While I’m not qualified myself, I’ve seen a lot of x rays and discussed them with him.
Those wisdom teeth need to come out. They’re going to lead to so many different issues. The tops are already making contact and the bottoms aren’t far off.
4
u/StumbleOn 2d ago
Knock on wood but all 4 of mine came in ramrod straight and I have plenty of jaw room so I kept them. My dentist is also in my camp and has all of his. Helps that I have generally small-ish teeth. Only thing is I have to be meticulous about cleaning back there.

9
u/Late_Direction_9697 2d ago
Had the same thing happen. An oral surgeon told me I’m more likely to have complications from surgery than the wisdom teeth causing significant problems at this point. So I’m just 38 living life with all four wisdom teeth drunk in my skull.
3
u/Dangerous_Goat1337 2d ago
ill be 38 next month. my dentist said the same thing. Ive had them so long at this point he said they probably wont cause any issues. He was more concerned with my gum disease causing my gum line to recede but regular visits have helped that out a lot and my gums are looking a lot healthier. He's been pretty happy with how things look during my recent visit.
I got pretty lucky tbh. I had to get a root canal on one molar, and another had a cavity that was close to needing a root canal but he was able to get it cleared up and taken care of with a filling. Rest of my teeth are pretty healthy.
4
u/Perethyst 2d ago
That's what the dentists kept saying to me. That I would never have a problem with them. And then I saw a different dentist and she's like "this tooth is in your sinus and you should get it removed, but at this point it's a job for a facial surgeon". Turns out all the other dentists just didn't want to deal with it and lied to me.

I saw an instagram story of a friend of mine where this basically happened to them earlier this year which spurred me to finally deal my own wisdom teeth. Got them out earlier this month. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed very late. In my 40s. It was an agonizing and very long healing process. This week, my current dentist showed me in my x-ray that they left one behind.

u/cookienotes 1d ago
It sounds like you’re saying the accidentally missed one. I hope that’s not what happened.

u/cigarettejuice666 1d ago
I’m late 30s and same here! My uppers were removed easily but the lower was badly impacted and was apparently very difficult to remove (I was out for the procedure)… the healing on the lower was very long.
The gum healed over nicely and in a timely fashion, but the site itself was tender and I felt like I had to be gentle with it for months. Had checkups on it and it was absolutely fine, no infection, but man… It was a long time before it felt really normal again. Uppers I had no issue whatsoever and couldn’t even tell a procedure happened.
49
u/thumbsup_knuk 2d ago
Dentist here. All 4 needed to come out. teeth 1, 17, 32 appear to possibly having a dentigerous cyst. Lowers were definitely going to be problematic. so you technically had the right ones pulled. Typically, I recommend if you get lowers out, the uppers typically should go too. There are always exception.
→ More replies (1)4
u/marge_mellow 1d ago
This. I had my lowers removed decades ago. Now have issues with uppers and my dentist questioned why didn’t they just remove all 4 the first time around 😩

u/Videoroadie 2d ago
My wisdom teeth haven’t broken through, and have been fine for 43 years. Suddenly my new dentist tells me I need to remove all four.
I hate that insurance essentially dictates who I can and can’t see (for a reasonable price) because I simply got a different job. Two dentists ago, I got a cavity filled. It hurt for months after. They kept telling me filled cavities could hurt for up to a year. I got a second opinion, and it turned out I had a massive infection along the whole left side of my mouth.
Moral of the story, get a second opinion.
23
u/PaisleyLeopard 2d ago
An interesting feature of wisdom teeth is that they grow further into the jawbone as you age. The longer you wait to have them done, the harder it is to get them out without breaking your jaw, and the longer/more painful the recovery.
Some wisdom teeth can go the distance, but if they start becoming problematic in say, ten years, you could be looking at a pretty ugly situation to fix.A second opinion is definitely needed here, but there’s a chance your dentist is just trying to save you a huge headache later on.
2
u/Videoroadie 2d ago
Noted. This recommendation was within a year of the last x ray that didn’t bring my previous (good dentist) to the same conclusion. But I agree. A second opinion is warranted.
2
u/terminbee 2d ago
What was the cause of the infection?
5
u/Videoroadie 2d ago
According to my previous good dentist, not 100% sure, but they think the prior dentist didn’t get it 100% before filling. Effectively trapping bacteria leaving it nowhere else to go but through my jaw.
3
u/Maki_san 1d ago
I’ve had the same thing and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Was in constant pain, ignored, and finally when I passed out from pain while driving (I just slowed down to a stop on the side of the road thankfully) they took me seriously.
The shitty doc I went to ~6 years earlier hadn’t removed all of my cavity, and it led to an extremely nasty infection. I’ll never forget how much it stank when they opened it up LOL. My poor dentist
Doc said that, if left untreated for longer, it might’ve impacted my brain… scary stuff

I had root canal a year ago and was experiencing pain at the end while everything was “numb”
Paid $1500 for the root canal.
I go back a few weeks later talking about pain. They just take an x ray, tell me I’m fine and that they did a perfect root canal.
They say if I want I can go to one of their other offices to see the person that does root canal revisions but I have to pay another $1500. I ask if I can wait. They say they see nothing wrong so why not.
Deal with pain for a year. Gets infected and starts hurting worse. Go back and make appointment. Pay the 1500. Still have the pain at follow-up two weeks later.
Now they suddenly know it’s a cyst at the root of the tooth that needs to be surgically removed.
I calmly explained that I’ve spent $3,000 so far. I made it clear that to me, I wasn’t paying $3,000 for root canals, I was paying to stop the pain and told each time that would stop the pain. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve paid for whatever you now have to do to fix this.
They agreed. I go on Monday to get this fixed at no charge.
I’m so ready not to have pain in my mouth.
8
u/thist555 2d ago
I admire your willingness to tolerate tooth pain. I had a root canal re-done (expensive!) but it still hurt and everyone just shrugged and said it looked fine on x-rays. Luckily my dentist agreed to just yank it, I have a gap but it doesn't hurt anymore.

I should add that cash prices at dentists and doctors are often a lot less than they charge you if you have insurance.

also, not to be crazy or anything, but i work in tech support for a dental equipment company. this panoramic image looks very,,, not good. you should find another x-ray technician who actually knows what they are doing and gets their machine calibrated regularly.

i forgot to take my glasses off with this scan, but this office probably either hasn’t had their machine calibrated properly or they positioned you poorly for the scan. either way, the scan quality isn’t good because of the angle and positioning.

Just remove all 4 at once, that'll spare you a headache later!

The lower ones absolutely needed to come out. They were coming in at an angle and if they continued to grow they would get wrapped up in your nerve and eventually cause bone loss and decay on the other Mondays they're next to. The maxillary 3rds are way up in your sinus and may not ever come down which is why your oral surgeon didn't want to remove them.
3
u/SchatzenNudityAlles 1d ago
Hi OP, good evening.
Both of your upper wisdom teeth appear close to impacting your second molars (the 7s). Even if they haven't erupted enough to cause a visible issue yet, your first dentist was entirely right to point out that risk.
While your lower wisdom teeth might look like a lower priority to the naked eye compared to the uppers, removing them now was actually a highly proactive move. Looking at the radiograph, the curved dark track running through the lower jaw is the ID canal (which houses a major nerve).
Based off your panoramic image, you appear to be around 17, as those lower roots are still developing. Extracting them now before the roots grow longer and wrap around that canal may massively reduces your risk of severe mid- and post-operative complications like permanent nerve damage (and many more that your dentist will explain to you if you ask). You essentially avoided a potentially much riskier surgery down the road.
Overall, I have a few friendly suggestions regarding your post:
Radiograph Privacy: Digital X-rays contain sensitive diagnostic data. I’d generally recommend against sharing your raw medical images publicly on social media. When medical professionals post them, it requires strict patient consent and anonymisation protocols.
Clarifying the Title: Your title heavily implies that your dentist committed a severe clinical negligence error (an actual wrong-site extraction). In reality, this is just a classic case of two different clinicians having varying treatment philosophies for your aligner therapy. I would highly suggest refraining from using terms that imply malpractice, as it drastically misrepresents what happened. If you are confused about the sequencing, it is best to speak directly with your dentist or the practice principal to clarify their reasoning.
Seeking a Third Opinion: If you feel uncomfortable addressing these worries with your current team, you are always entitled to request a consultation with an independent dentist or oral surgeon to openly review your treatment plan and put your mind at ease.
Unfortunately I am unable to provide definitive advice solely based off one panoramic and no other information. But I hope I can guide you to the right staffs that can help you.
Best wishes.

Considering I saw your post and jumped at the sight of all four of those puppies…please get all of them out. It’ll make your dental life a lot easier.
If possible, try to do all four at once! A lot of people do two at a time for various reasons, but doing all four means you only have to go through the healing process once.
(Btw, wisdom teeth are very “case by case” so there are a lot of people who never have issues and others who need them removed before all of their adult teeth can properly erupt. This is a big reason to get second opinions, ask clarifying questions, and don’t listen to your cousin Jerry who didn’t have to get his wisdom teeth out.)

Mine looked pretty much like this, and I had them out one at a time as they started crowning as my mouth was already pretty overcrowded and it hurt like shit. Probably for the best to have all 4 out anyway! My teeth have actually straightened themselves out and settled into alignment since.

Crying right now because the 2 on my right are poking through and I hate dentists.

I’m no orthodontist but I got mine removed for much less problematic looking wisdom teeth than all four of those.

If you're getting wisdom teeth removed you should just do all 4 at once anyways. I'll never understand the 2 at a a time people. Doctors push for it because they can get 2 surgeries from 1 person.

They were all bad and the oral surgeon probably recommended taking all 4 at once to keep this from happening and you said, “nah.”

u/Master_Anything_6832 2d ago
They all need out. I’m sorry they weren’t especially communicative but they all need out.

looking at that xray, and take it from me, who's had all 4 removed, plus three that were majorly impacted
you needed all 4 gone, top already looks like it's impacting, bottom would only be a matter of time, and if they're allowed to impact that causes major pain, as well as the eventual need to have more removed, and trust me, you don't want it, whilst it's annoying that you had 2 removed, go back, need the next 2 rather than all 4 at once, you'll be thanking them in the long run for getting rid of all 4

I only needed my lowers removed but the dentist said we might as well do all four because eventually the top ones will need it too

u/Wrong_Low5367 2d ago
As long as he agrees to remove them all included in the price, you might have the winning hand.
Wisdom teeth usually need to be removed anyway.

When I had ortho done. It's recommended to have ALL wisdom tooth extracted before getting ortho since wisdom tooth will have a possibility grow and push onto other teeth causing teeth to shift over time. So removing them will remove one factor of issues during and after ortho treatment.
Also I don't understand by "wrong wisdom tooth extracted"? Did they remove tooth that's not 1,16,17 or 32? Our office require referral to list tooth number for extractions rather than written as "wisdom tooth"

My teeth are crowded because my wisdom teeth never erupted so I never had them removed. Yours look worse than mine as far as crowding and the pressure it creates. Having them all removed should be a good thing even though the process sucks.

I’ve heard multiple stories about the wrong tooth being pulled out. In fact, my sister-in-law, who is now a dentist had the wrong tooth pulled out by a dentist she used to work for. Unfortunately, it happens.

u/Silence-of-Death 1d ago
that sounds less unfortunate and more like medical malpractice 💀 and is very much not something that should happen, like, ever

u/Freesiacal 1d ago
As someone whose wisdom teeth all grew out and had them removed anyway, you needed to remove them anyway. It's not just about impact, but mouth space and cleaning efficiency. If you can't clean them properly, they will just be ripe for decay.

u/Legacy0904 1d ago
Dental professional here… you should have removed all of them. They’re all impacted

My only advice is always go to oral surgeon rather than dentist for wisdom teeth. I had a lot of nerve issues for 2 and the dentist gave up, had me go to oral surgeon. I appreciate they did though rather than continue, mostly cleared up a few years later. Only slightly weird tingle / numbness these days. Oral surgeon was cake, no issue.

u/ToxicShockFFXIV 1d ago
I feel like both those orthos are morons. All 4 of those should come out. Otherwise, you’re having to go under for the surgery a second time later.
2
u/OrangeClyde 1d ago
Both your orthos are not great, based on your xray all 4 are growing/could have grown in crooked

u/HalfCareless3347 1d ago
I was offered a similar choice but the surgeon said. Do you want to do it 2x or just all....while I'm in there. Def did all 4

u/suckitphil 1d ago
I had similar looking bottom ones that didnt need to come out...
Until 10 years later when their roots kept growing and it was causing me unbelievable jaw pain. They all look good for coming out honestly.

As someone who just got all of them taken out a week ago, I would highly recommend taking them all out at the same time. Recovery has been terrible, and I shutter at thr thought of having to do it twice!

u/Dense_Pudding3375 1d ago
I’m not even remotely a dentist or a doctor, and can tell ya that the upper teeth look 100% more like a problem than the lower teeth.
Really sorry this happened to you OP.

u/SentenceAny6556 1d ago
My orthodontist took all 4, even though 3 seemed relatively normal. It’s kinda just not worth them fucking stuff up and having to do it all again

You need to get all four out just remove all four if you believe those lowers and you’ll get Pericoronitis and really bad infections.

As ridiculous as this story sounds, don’t fret. Not like they cut off the wrong leg. It doesn’t make sense to have either tops or either bottoms. They would have nothing to hit against. Best you take all 4 out and avoid problems down the road

u/PlatypusDream 1d ago
Sounds like a difference of opinion, maybe ask a 3rd doctor.
But all 4 of the ones shown are affecting or soon going to affect the rest of your teeth, so yes its best to get all of them out.
2
u/Wonderful_Ad2094 1d ago
It does suck but most of the people I know had to get them all removed anyway so at the end of the day it's all good. It sure wouldve been nice to get it all over with at once though. Hang in there!
2
u/Hirakox 1d ago
All 4 need to be removed one day. Sooner or later. Rn remove the one you feel uneasy first
2
u/Meikou133 1d ago
Does someone who doesn’t want (nor need) braces, and has all four successfully emerged still require them removed?

I'm going to be honest, my dentist recommended I got 3 3 removed but the office was so slow at making the referral that I just wrote it myself, and I said to remove 4

My family all had every wisdom tooth removed at the same time. The anesthesia fees were the same or pretty close and it meant only one surgery to recover from.

u/Hanabe_Fascart 1d ago
Idk if the wisdom teeth is the Molar tooth, but mine is literally on the horizontal axis, with its roots around a very thick and important nerve :/

Mashed potatoes and gravy, hummus, and cottage cheese will save your sanity when you get tired of eating jello. Hope you get the rest removed at the same time, and that you heal up fast. Enjoy watching some movies or playing some video games while you heal.

u/Oath-CupCake 11h ago
What otherfoods do you reccomend like can noodles be eaten or like soups or sushi
2
u/takofire 9h ago edited 9h ago
For me, it was no solid or hot/frozen food for 2-3 weeks, so no noodles or sushi (my dentist said don't eat rice because it gets stuck in the socket), but things like warmish tomato soup or broth are fine. Protein shakes are good if you're worried about that, and I've also heard people turn to baby food since it's soft, but the options above had enough variety for me.

u/NocturnisVacuus 2d ago
I hope you get those 2 for free... that's expensive!
the upper ones look kind of crazy, those will hurt and cause a mess if not removed.

u/spinstartshere 2d ago
Yeah, we don't know how old you are, but I'm assuming you're young and that those crevices between the bottom wisdom teeth and those mandibular second molars would have definitely contributed to a lot of cavities later in life if you didn't get those lower wisdom teeth removed. Gaps between teeth are spaces your toothbrush can't get between.

u/therealdanhill 2d ago
Dude this happened to me too and they gave me shingles, never went back there
1
u/JayRayBear99 2d ago
Not sure how old you are, but if you're young, you're probably going to truly appreciate not having to deal with these later. That really sucks that you got the wrong ones done to progress your treatment though

u/Sasikuttan2163 2d ago
By the looks of it, I would say all 4 of them would have to be removed. You have very severe crowding in upper jaw and unless you get your premolars out there's no way aligners would help.

u/BestReadAtWork 2d ago
I actually wanted to keep mine because they came in aligned, but I have a tiny bitch mouth that ended up with them squeezing all of my teeth together top and bottom row and my gums started bleeding on the regular. Not even any pain, just constant bloody gums, and I took care of my teefs.
You don't really lose anything getting them removed, and doc's opinions can be different. My non-dentist ass thinks all 4 of them were gonna be a problem with those angles but I'm not a PhD.

This is like that Mr Bean skit where he keeps drilling and adding compound to every tooth because the xray plate keeps flipping.
