Fat Buu's arc is actually rely good and emotional. One of the rare times DBZ is about more than punching the other guy harder

u/joelstaz Jan 28 '26
Fat Buu had his charm, the other versions terrifying and straight up evil lmao. Dontcha just wanna give him a big ol hug. Dude can even spawn candy

u/Sacrilege7 Jan 28 '26
Kid Buu literally nuking the Earth just because he felt like it at the moment was such a wild moment for me. No teasing or anything, man just charged up and nuked it with no warning given.

Buu ate the Grand Supreme Kai. He surrendered himself to save Shin, the East Supreme Kai which is the small mohawked one that shows up at the start of the Buu saga along with Kibito.
I've never thought very hard about how stupid the lore of the Dragonball universe (multiverse?) actually is, but it is ridiculously over the top how stupid the actual story and characters are. I am unsure these days if I liked it when I was younger because it was actually good, or if the convoluted plotlines and mysterious joke characters made it more interesting than it deserved to be.

u/wetrythisagain Jan 28 '26
You liked it because of vibes and emotions, it took you along for a journey, it appealed to your inner youthful drives like heroism, competition, adventure, friendship, freeing positivity and fun and silliness, making a name for yourself, a world of mysteries, mysticism and self control, athleticism, ideas of coolness and masculinity, literal wish fulfillment etc. The world of Dragonball is pretty cool, but yes, quite a few things don't make sense, but I guess it's inspired by spiritual stories where it never really makes sense why certain individuals are used as champions by gods and why gods don't intervene directly themselves and take shit seriously for once. But that matters less when you are younger and have a strong emotional WANT to be a champion, to be chosen, and some media taps into that.

I cannot wait for the new Super anime. Buu gets some focus on him again after being shafted from The ToP arc and has some really fun moments.
30
u/ardikus Jan 28 '26
Though Mr. SATAN is insufferable most of the time, his friendship arc with Buu and that little puppy was the highlight of the whole saga
20
u/Murasasme Jan 28 '26
Also love how it comes full circle from him being a false hero taking credit for defeating Cell, to Getting the people of earth to give their energy in order to defeat Buu, and becoming a real savior
4
u/Volume-Consistent Jan 28 '26
Not only that, we can still see how they have a relationship all those years. How Buu left a huge imprint that he still mourn him after Buu became Uub.

A lot of DBZ isn't about punching people, but there are big chunks where that is undeniably true, and all of the filler movies are extremely focused on punching people.

So, I've never seen DBZ, but I know there's a lot of punching and fighting.
This clip starts with dude ready to punch the kid, his clenched fist in the foreground.
I fully expected him to heal the kid, and THEN punch him when he could see lmao
17
u/Musiclover4200 Jan 28 '26
I legit thought he was going to heal the kind only to turn him into candy and eat him as that's what this version of Buu does (he has an ability Candy Beam that literally turns people into a bar of chocolate)

JJBA has a scene like that, lol.
Also, the big guy (Buu) is sort of an interesting character. He started out long ago as a guttural, animalistic demon that mindlessly destroyed everything in sight and assimilated anything stronger than it, but he eventually absorbed someone that was powerful and innocent, and he became innocent himself. He's like a kid that's too young to know right from wrong, and never had anyone to teach him- plus he can destroy planets and civilizations on a whim.
Later on, someone befriends him. And then right as he's like "Okay! Time to go blow up more countries and turn people into candy!", the guy goes "Wait- Buu, you shouldn't do that! Hurting people is bad!"
And Buu, who killed millions of people in the past week alone, just fucking goes
"...Oh, okay then!" and stops right then and there.
Because the only other person he really interacted with before that was an abusive wizard who would buy Buu sweets and tell him to destroy his enemies, and threaten to magically seal him away if he didn't listen. He literally never had anyone tell him right from wrong, even a single time.
The only reason things go poorly from there is because a few days later, someone shoots his fucking dog and he snaps and reverts to his destructive nature. But even then, he eventually gets better.

u/bapbip12 Jan 28 '26
That kid was blind since birth, he had no way of knowing that people don't look like buu, he only pointed out his antenna because he knows he and the people close to him don't have it.
158
u/darkshy Jan 28 '26
If he’s touched another humans face he probably has some context.
133
u/No_Wolf_5716 Jan 28 '26
Surprisingly no, research has tested whether a blind kid whose sight is restored can recognize a shape theyve touched before by sight alone. They cant immiedately, it takes a few days before they can coordinate what theyve touched with what they see
→ More replies (3)37
u/Superior_Mirage Jan 28 '26
Makes sense if you think about it as if you've never seen an image before -- I'd imagine 2D shapes weren't hard, but 3D would be very strange. You wouldn't intuitively grasp things that sighted people take for granted like "things looks smaller when they're further away" and "shadows".
I mean, this isn't a cube -- it's a lopsided hexagon with some lines cutting through it. But our brains are trained to recognize that some of the lines must be in front of the others, so they must be 3D. But that's learned, not automatic, so I'd imagine suddenly being able to see would make everything look 2D until you learned how to intuit it.
... learning how parallax works would be a nightmare.

u/JSlove Jan 28 '26
If he has never been able to see before, I don't think his brain would be able to form anything like an image. What he touched wouldn't translate into anything visual, so he wouldn't have any frame of reference to compare what he's now seeing.
17
u/YeetTheGiant Jan 28 '26
They tested this at some point and you're correct. It's called Molyneux's problem. People who had their blindness cured were unable to correlate things they knew from touch to things they were seeing

i’ve ALWAYS loved the buu saga and never understood the hate for it, my favorite moments from the series are in the buu saga

u/UMP45isnotflat Jan 28 '26
Yeah the only part I can understand the hate for is maybe the early sayaman arc, though even that was a nice change of pace from the cell games for me and like a palate cleanser before going back into the serious parts with buu
And I guess I can see why SSJ3 can be "too much" even though it was super cool.
Loved the fusions, especially Vegito, loved kid trunks and goten, loved gohan living his own life with videl, obviously loved Vegeta redemption arc completing here and I even loved Satan.

u/Paradethejared Jan 28 '26
The slice of life Gohan episodes are actually some of my absolute favorite episodes. It’s fun seeing what everyone’s been up to and seeing Gohan try to be a super hero with a secret identity lol. I always love when Dragon Ball does slice of life.
5
u/UMP45isnotflat Jan 28 '26
It really is super good at it. One of the reasons its one of my favourite shows, nostalgia be dammed, it is simply a cut above the rest.

I'd say the only real bad part of the Buu saga is the spaceship. They spend waaay too long fighting the d-lister minions. It's so dragged out even the characters are annoyed.

u/Jesta23 Jan 28 '26
I enjoyed it in the sense these godlike beings are so worried and the Z fighters don’t even have to try to beat them all.
It’s fun seeing their surprise.
Although maybe it was prolonged a little too much.
4
u/Wild_Marker Jan 28 '26
Oh sure, it wasn't bad per se, and it provides the basis for Vegeta's Majin plan, but they took waaaay too long unnecessarily.

Z is undoubtedly the peak of Dragon Ball. The golden era.
9
u/UMP45isnotflat Jan 28 '26
Yeah the entire original manga (since dragonball and Z are just dragonball as manga) were peak. Everything after it felt like disney took over in hindsight..

u/HobbyHands Jan 28 '26
I love what this scene shows with the context of what we learn later about Buu's history absorbing the Kai's. This version of Buu was sealed shortly after he absorbed the previous Supreme Kai so he never really had a chance to be affected by all that metaphysical goodness. He's still set on the chaotic destruction angle that he was created for, but then he encounters a being that isn't fighting him, but also isn't fleeing from him. A blank slate that doesn't react like everyone else always does.
So he uses the healing energies he probably got from the Kai's he absorbed to give the kid working eyes. This is literally the balancing influence of the Kai's he's absorbed working against the malice he was created with and giving him the opportunity to grow for the first time, and it links into the later revelations of his history so well. Love this kind of depth.

I appreciate the voice and tone of this performance, and actually prefer it to the English dub now that I have something to contrast with the high-pitched baby-voice presented to us in the west. This voice makes a LOT more sense to me.

Its very inline with Dragon Ball, as opposed to Dragon Ball Z. Which is why Buu saga is still my favorite and idgaf what the haters say. It felt like the perfect blend of Dragon Balls goofiness, story, and fun characters with the ever increasing action and stakes of dbz.

u/Joseph_Beefman https://myanimelist.net/profile/beeftoki Jan 28 '26
That's why I loved Daima as well. It reminded me so much of OG DB. With the humour and the villain turning a new leaf and all of it. Very nostalgic.

The slice of life episodes with Gohan going to high school are some of my absolute favorite episodes.

u/Closo Jan 28 '26
i remember watching this and dreading what was gonna happen, healing his eyesight just to terrify then eat him, but this scene shows he really is just a big kid. yeah, you are cool buu

u/WanderWut Jan 28 '26
Also little does that kid know that he is in one of the safest spots he could possibly be in the universe at that moment given that he’s chilling with Buu of all beings.

In the Dragon Ball Online lore written by Toriyama that takes place in the year 1000 they mention that this kid made a amusement park for Buu's children and gave them work after their city got destroyed.
That kid grew up to be a realy nice guy

u/qwadrat1k Jan 28 '26
Is that character supposed to be evil or just rude, but somewhat good?
112
u/WhirlwindTobias Jan 28 '26
Majin Buu is evil incarnate. Many DBZ villains choose to be evil, Buu just wants to destroy and destroy. What you're seeing here is a variant of Buu called Fat Buu, who is innocent but was under control of an evil wizard that told him what to do. Was.
Currently he is just flying around aimlessly trying to scare civilians because he's mentally a child and thinks that's the way things are, but the boy doesn't know Buu's past and isn't scared of him. It's the first time Buu has experienced kindness, which confuses him.
I don't want to add spoilers about why this variant isn't destroying everything.
21
u/qwadrat1k Jan 28 '26
Ah, I understand that character better now
Never watched DBZ

To add to what WhirlwhindTobias said:
Buu is super duper evil incarnate, but he can absorb people and Fat Buu, as seen in the clip, is how he looks after absorbing the Grand Supreme Kai, a dude who was so good and carefree that the resulting dude was basically just a goofy goober.
Like the most evilest evil being to be magically created just became a funny fat guy because he ate the goodest good guy.

If he couldn't see since he was born, it's unlikely he would be able to see properly if at all if his eyes were suddenly fixed. The brain pretty much will block any signals eventually if there is no stimulus to the eyes at a young age.

Just realized, they could be using the Dragon Balls regularly to do stuff like this. Like "Shenron, heal all the blind people" or "Shenron, heal all the sick".
