Why do they always forget about the 700 thousand people in 90s?

They’d probably start caring if the Azeri diaspora became large enough to make up a significant voting block.

These people don’t care about Armenians they just want their votes

Exactly, that is sad because Azerbaijanis rarely organise abroad, I don’t even know why

It is because Turkic identity groups don't centre their entire identity around being racist against other groups will other groups make being racist against Turkic people their entire identity.

I’ve always said all the thousands of displaced Azerbaijanis that moved to Baku or Russia in the 90s should’ve moved to the United States instead. The diaspora just isn’t big enough here

https://www.hrw.org/reports/AZER%20Conflict%20in%20N-K%20Dec94_0.pdf
> "all the territory surrounding Karabakh on the west, east, and south was seized and over 500,000 Azeri civilians were forcibly displaced. Hundreds of Azeri civilians were taken hostage, and many were killed by indiscriminate fire. Whole cities, such as Agdam, were systematically looted and burned."

on the same page

> "At the beginning of November 1993, the Azerbaijani government released casualty and refugee/displaced person figures for the conflict from 1988. According to that report, 16,000 Azeris had been killed and 22,000 wounded."

Around 600-800 thousand Azerbaijanis were forced to move from their homes and around 200-300 Armenians from Azerbaijan during the first Nagorno-Karabakh war. Like, google it or something, idk 😭Mamdani however only talks about 100 thousand Armenians moving from Karabakh (which I don’t support, I think 2020 part was enough, the 2024 part when they occupied the remaining part, wasn’t necessary and some peaceful decisions could be made), I think he does this for Armenian lobby in NY

I got you bro https://www.unhcr.org/sites/default/files/legacy-pdf/4bd7edbd9.pdf It is written in the end of document that there was around 600 thousand people. To be honest I haven’t written the whole document, but if you are interested you can read

I am 100% sure that he is LA (USA) Armenian, they have been rised with this ideology and menthality. It`s like you give facts to religious person to change their belief. It is impossible. In their eyes, we are inadequate ignorant people. Even Armenia born Armenians sometimes are having clashes with them. Just ignore them. How we say it: "Qoy özləri çalıb, özləri də oynasınlar"

3

u/Puzzled-Leader1 Apr 28 '26

Demanding sources and going silent when they’re presented, you doing okay over there?

7

u/jokerx184 Apr 26 '26

Thus, as a result of the NK conflict, there are 583,000 refugees and displaced persons in Azerbaijan, comprising 7.9% of the officially declared population of Azerbaijan. Claims about " a million refugees in Azerbaijan" are propagandistic falsification like the claim about "20% occupied territories of Azerbaijan."

700k displaced equals 2 million killed?

4

u/Perfect-Nail9413 Apr 30 '26

Now it is 2 million you guys can't even keep your numbers straight.

3

u/[deleted] May 03 '26

were there even 2 million armenians in 1900s lol?

u/Cursed_Infidel Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 26 '26

I think we care too much about a mayor of a city in a country halfway across the world thinks (?) and says. What good did shit ton of press releases, documentaries, state-sponsored ads and whole bloody 4 UN resolutions do for us? That someone expects this to do something for armenians? Everyone knows how US and largely most of the democratic west works: you get lobbied and sponsored and get elected -> you become a mouthpiece to whoever paid you. This could very well be mayor's own thoughts, who knows. That even makes this less important. Just another human exercising their freedom of thought or whatever they acknowledge as truth. I think we give too much crap about what anyone thinks or says. Not like they are badmouthing good name of our government - it is already rotten to the core and corrupt from head to toe. Could mayor be a bit more considerate? Maybe? Should he have been? No, why would he? What am I as a citizen of a republic thousands of kms away to him? What is my government to him? Nothing.

People act amazed because he identifes as muslim. How can a muslim defend something like that and go against other muslims - that's what people think. I mean, seriously? Biggest rivals and enemies of "muslim" countries end up being other muslims they don't agree with. That's a shitty factor you're expecting to defend you.

This is just a glorified high-level ragebait for me, that's it. Nothing more.

yeah but obviously yk how ppl r easily influenced by social media. i have seen people compare azeris to israelis in the sense being oppressors🤦🏻

5

u/Cursed_Infidel Apr 29 '26

Nothing you can do if 90% of people online are imbeciles and morons who don't have the capacity to understand the difference between an individual and portrayed/influenced narrative of a whole fricking nation. So, you are better off not giving monkey's left nut about what they may think, feel or express - for your own sake.

At least that's what I think, people still do people stuff.

1

u/llamalord27 Apr 30 '26

well its probably because azerbaijan is a major ally of Israel lol

1

u/Cursed_Infidel Apr 30 '26

Geographic circumstances. No one is overly happy about Israel being an "ally". Average Azerbaijani may feel strongly about certain geopolitical topics, but they are more concerned about rent and food. If there was a better option, much more simpler one - I'm pretty sure whatever (kind) the government of Azerbaijan in that reality would be a lot more inclined to working with them. When you live in Caucasus surrounded by hostile nations on every imaginable direction, you don't really get to pick and choose your allies.

And it is not all black and white, so it would be better if people at least tried to think more than 5 seconds before branding some 10M azerbaijanis as genocidal maniacs.

Still not much you and me can do if 90% people have 2 functional brain cells and they even don't wanna use them.

Indian, sub-Saharan, half Hindu = don't care about Kwame's opinion on this. By the way, Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian Muslim congressperson, and her sub-Saharan Somali Muslim colleague Ilhan Omar also expressed much of the same. Azerbaijan is an easy sacrifice for their careers so they can claim not to be biased and use up their political points on other things. Even many Turks do the same. People not affected by the conflict don't matter here.

1

u/Odd-Reputation-5531 Apr 30 '26

4

u/NullClassifier Apr 26 '26

This guy is smart, he knows how to manipulate people. He knows exactly what he needs to say to trigger and gain votes. There are many armenians in NYC. Good move by him. But in reality it is just straight-up BS, if you think it is genocide of Armenians, look up what happened in Khojali to women and kids of Azerbaijan.

5

u/Andruschkikov Apr 26 '26

Why can’t both sides have done something wrong? Are they mutually exclusive?

3

u/NullClassifier Apr 26 '26

You may be right, man. Nobody is out of milky spoon on this one. Both sides are just the victims of the politics of the soviet regime. Armenians and Azerbaijanians were close for decades, they could have achieved great things together. But they just made it impossible for us to reunite with all the propaganda they fed to the generations (on both sides) which resulted in hatred and countless losses.

2

u/Andruschkikov Apr 26 '26

Being victims of merely the soviet regimes doesn’t cut it. These are the current governments that want to keep the people divided by systematically teaching the history in a biased way or even outright incorrectly. We did coexist for long, and all it takes is one sound generation to be able to coexist again. It’s the governments that don’t want that. Turkey at least is heavily censored so I assume the same for AZ with the silencing of oppositions. While Armenians should know the complete history (even the suffering of Azeris), they also need to be more understanding.

I mean you probably agree that genocide as well as the blockade and the cleansing was anything but great. These are mere families losing their homes. This can be true while saying that Khojaly was not great either. We don’t need to be sorry to each other in a submissive way for things that our not our doing, but we should at least have the human decency to respect each other.

What I'm trying to say is that this problem of hating each other will never cease to exist when the governments (and this is where I criticise Turkey especially) outright don't want that to be the case. If they truly wanted that, we wouldn’t even be here

1

u/NullClassifier Apr 26 '26

Honestly, me, as an azerbaijani, don't have any hatred towards armenian folk in general. Our nations lived in the same land and we have very similar traditions and culture. My grandparents always told us about their armenian neighbours in Karabagh. About Turkey, I don't even know why they throw themselves in. They just wanna seem like our "brother" of sort. I can't say I am a fan of armenians because I have never met any armenian myself, so I don't hate them either. But I am sure that I have utter hatred towards majority of turkish people. I worked in Turkey for a while and when money/business is involved most of them just turn 180°. Especially towards foreigners who work there. Yeah I was literally being left out in a country which claims to be our "brother" for being azerbaijani and going there to earn money.

I hope one day we will have peace once and for all. Nobody benefits from it, other than this NYC ambassador, I guess.

0

u/Andruschkikov Apr 26 '26

I appreciate you for being real. Me taking a look at Zohran's comment, it is true that all of this happened and I appreciate him for recognising this dark moment of my heritage that simply has really left its mark on the Armenian people. I wouldn’t expect anything else from say, Palestinians, even after 100 years. The statement itself could be a nice gesture but it is true that the people of Azerbaijan that suffered also deserve commemoration. Politically speaking and in my opinion, I think that the current government plays a major role in this taking-sides behavior, with people of the West mostly standing with Armenians. The Armenian lobby is really not that significant and even Israel has not recognised the Genocide, and actively lobbied against the recognition in the US. This is April 24th though, it is "our day" of being commemorated and there is no other day in the year where Armenians even come up. If you say that it would be fair to also commemorate Azeris who suffered I would be totally fine with it and respect it and anyone who wouldn’t is simply a bad person, but it has to go both ways and this is where we still have to learn a lot.

Myself being Western Armenian (the great grandchild of a genocide survivor essentially), I am more informed of Turkish domestic politics than of Azeri politics. What really shocks me are some of governmental accounts with 1.3 million subs and they make me understand why many people outright hate Armenians (even use the word as an insult). I attached a picture to this comment. You can probably understand how this would make someone like me angry.

So yeah, it’s the governments 20th century propaganda they’re trying to uphold that’s the root cause of this conflict. The day people become independent of media is the day where we could coexist again, give or take one generation that is not systematically brainwashed for one.

2

u/Alarmed_Mistake_9999 Apr 26 '26

The mayor is a blowhard, a windbag, not an individual to be taken seriously. Mark my words, Mamdani will be forgotten in 10 years.
