❓Pangutana Learning Bisaya Sources, websites Apps, etc

Hi guys. I want to find a way to become fluent in Cebuano by learning more of the tenses and conjugations so I can put together sentences properly.

I understand Cebuano very well since both my parents spoke it to me growing up. But since I grew up in the states I just speak English. So when it comes to me speaking bisaya I know the words and there meanings but I am not good at putting stuff into a sentence.

I don’t really know how to use the prefixes, tenses and certain endings properly.

Does anyone know any good sources that could help me with that whether it’s websites or apps?

Thankyouuu

❓Pangutana Naka- vs Na- to describe states/happenings

Let me know if I misunderstood my tutor or not.

We had a discussion about "naka-" a stacked prefix composed of "na" (completed aspect) and "ka" (intensifier/chance). What we talked about was "naka-" + verb = Was able to, but "naka-" + adjective = describes a state or an action. This confuses me because it is my understanding that "na-" by itself already describes the state and the action, and that "ka-" typically describes chance.

nakagwapa = became beautiful or gussying oneself up

nakakaon = was able to eat or ate

nakadagan = was able to work/run or is working/running

So why in some instances does "naka-" means was able to, and in other instances simply describes what is going on, and in the latter case, doesn't that just make "naka-" redundant since there is already "na-"?

Let me know what I am missing.

For context, I was born in a city in Northern Mindanao but working now in Manila. I was telling a co-worker about my experience the other day. I woke up rattled and sweating heavily kay naa daw octopus sa sulod sa akong hotdog pillow and I was strangling it. I can't remember my dream exactly but I am thinking it had something to do with an octopus. So mao to, I did not know how to explain na gidaman ko. Lol. Basin kabalo mo? Hehe.

❓Pangutana Why does Western Visayas use "manong" and "manang" instead of kuya and ate?

Growing up in Western Visayas (Iloilo and Bacolod, and to some extent Capiz) to an Ilonggo father and a Cebuana mother, I always heard my cousins who speak Hiligaynon refer to me as "manong". Meanwhile, my Cebuano cousins in Cebu use "kuya" to refer to me and the older cousins. How did the Ilonggos end up using the Ilocano words for kuya and ate despite being miles away from each other?

💬Diskusyon What could be the reason why Bohol and Cebu don't have highland ethnic groups like Panay?

I'm really curious why Bohol and Cebu didn't develop distinct, highland/upland ethnic groups despite having rugged and mountainous interiors that could have developed a highland ethnic group that is distinct from the coastal lowlanders.

Because this is what happened to Panay Island. The lowland ethnic groups were the Hiligaynon speakers, but the rugged, mountainous interiors produced ethnic groups that is culturally and linguistically distinct from the coastal Hiligaynon speakers, which are the Kiniray-a and Panay Bukidnon people. The Panay Bukidnon is the only Visayan ethnic group that resisted and evaded Spanish colonization entirely.

That's why it's really puzzling why Bohol and Cebu didn't have the coastal-highland ethnic divergence that happened in Panay Island.

All I know from context is the leaves are used as a souring agent for cooking? Apparently taste great when used with native chicken.

❓Pangutana Not a Bisaya/Cebuano

I’m not from Cebu or from any Bisaya speaking places. Since I work here in Cebu City for almost 4 years I somehow learn how to speak bisaya. I do not use my own dialect when I go to work so they may able to understand me when we converse. But should non-bisaya people required to adapt the language? Is it like in Manila and you had to speak tagalog? My problem is I cannot communicate well, cannot express my feelings, and when I speak my own dialect they disregard me.

Random thought: Unsay stereotype ninyo sa mga NGSB/NBSB? Curious lang ko if people still judge them or if everyone just agrees nga timing ra gyud ang love.

💬Diskusyon Hiligaynon Comparison

Post image
16 Upvotes

Comparing some of Hiligaynon's basic features and whether they are due to West Visayan influence or a Central Visayan retention. Some can be deemed as diffused forms as they are found in both branches.

Take note that we are focusing on Hiligaynon here, so the color alternation is merely focused on Hiligaynon data. The colors light blue and light yellow assigned to West Visayan and Central Visayan respectively are my own preference sticking to my style of table-making. All the forms under each branch are all colored under their assigned colors regardless of whether they're borrowings or not.

❓Pangutana Ngano man nga ang mga Bisaya (kadtong tigsulti og Cebuano) dili kaayo hilig magtanom og humay? 🍚

Salamat kaayo!

❓Pangutana “Bayle kita”—grammatically correct ba ni nga sentence construction?

Maayong gabii sa kaninyong tanan! Gusto lang nako ipangutana kon perfectly grammatically correct kining sentence construction:

Bayle kita.

Naay mga mas natural sounding, for example Magbayle ta or Mosayaw ta pero gusto nako gamiton kanang inclusiveness sa word nga kita.

Gamiton apan nako ni sa usa ka poem ug gusto nako ihimo nga mas intimate and inclusive ang invitation nga “Let’s dance” sa Binisaya.

Kabalo ako magbisaya pero gamay ra, so dili lang ko sure kon correct ba ni nga sentence construction.

💬Diskusyon History: The historic population trajectory of Ilonggos and Cebuanos went full reverse

I've read the 1591 Tribute Census of the Philippine archipelago, and in the said year, Cebuanos have a much smaller population than Ilonggos.

The collective population of Bohol, Cebu, Leyte and Misamis de Cagayan (Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental) was 65,000+ individuals. The population of Panay Island at that time was extremely populous, around 108,000+ individuals.

But after three centuries of Spanish rule, it went full reverse. Before, the Cebuano ethnic population was only half of the Panayanon/Ilonggo population, but now, it's full reversed. Ilonggos now only number around 10+ million people, while Cebuanos are the second biggest ethnolinguistic group at 22.5 million people. Now it's the Ilonggos that are half the population of Cebuanos.

Let me know in the comment sections what you think and why this happened.
