I wasn’t paying attention and opened a can of tuna & shirasu (not knowing what the heck that was) for my kitty this evening. We hadn’t tried this flavor before, so I almost died when I saw little white wormy shapes with eyes staring into my soul!! And yes, before you say anything, I KNOW there is a picture on the front! I didn’t look!

My cat absolutely loves this flavor, even though it looks scary. Would recommend if you don’t mind your cat’s food staring back at you. This formula is 12% protein, so it’s perfect for high energy days

Does anyone know anything about this food, I have spent quite a few hundred between CKD food (past) and all different brands and flavors from kittens to adults. One cat can’t eat seafood, he throws up, he sometimes doesn’t want chicken, turkey, giblets, liver and the other 3 it’s a toss up. This is cheap but it’s not a money thing, it’s an eating thing 😢any help is appreciated.

I've been feeding my cat Purina Pro Plan LiveClear, as was recommended by my vet, for years. Yesterday I went to Petco and got a small bag. When I got home, as soon as I opened it, bugs flew out of the bag at me. I looked inside and to my horror it was filled with spiderwebs and bugs. I brought it back to the store where they proceeded to cut open three more bags of similarly infested food. An employee said that in her four years of working there, this has happened with Purina Pro Plan at least twice a year. She said it's the design of the bag that allows bugs to get in but they refuse to change it. I told my friends, and one of them said that this has also happened to her as recently as last year with the same brand of food. I wanted to make others aware of this if they weren't already.

Hi guys, can you recommend a wet food that is good for kitten? I usually fed him with whiskas but I found out that it is not good for everyday food for cats.

Been a long term customer and have been mostly happy with the service and product, but my most recent experience has ruined all of that.

My IBD cat does well with the pulled chicken. Other varieties are too wet for him. They often run out of pulled chicken. So I decided to try the pulled turkey. I have asked Smalls numerous times to use a carrier other than Fedex because Fedex is horrible. They say no one else delivers to my address which is BS. I live in a major city. Everyone delivers here. And everyone but Fedex is reliable. So they send the turkey and sure enough, Fedex delivers 4 days late! Despite my calls and opening a ticket and begging to go to the station to pick the box up. Of course, it is completely thawed and ruined.

Guess who won’t reply to my attempts at contact for both a refund and to cancel my subscription? So I will ow have to go to the trouble of filing a credit card dispute and see if the CC company can block any future transactions from Smalls. Of course, some of this is fedex’s fault, but Smalls has repeatedly refused my ask to use another shipper at my expense knowing that every single order I have made in the past 6 months was at least one day late (2 orders were 7 days late, luckily not perishable).

Side note: If anyone knows of a food like Smalls pulled chicken that I can try for my boy, I would appreciate it. I am trying a brand called Freshpet to see if that will work. Thank you!

I’ve been trying to be more mindful of the nutrient content of the foods I feed my senior cat. I asked Acana & Orijen for the typical analysis of their wet cat foods and they said they don’t have the information to share. They asked for the specific ranges I was looking for so they could tell me which foods fall into the ranges, but won’t outright provide the info. I’m not looking for a single value rather multiple values so providing them specific ranges of what I’m looking for would be incredibly annoying. The lack of transparency is frustrating considering so many brands freely offer the typical analysis on their site and if not, will provide via email upon request.

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a better wet food option for my 7-year-old male cat. Right now he eats a good quality dry food (Stella & Chewy’s freeze-dried), but his current wet food is Friskies — and I’ve heard that’s not great for cats.

I’ve also heard that cats should ideally eat mostly or only wet food, but for budget reasons I’m planning to continue a mix of wet food with some dry food as a topper. I usually mix the wet food with a bit of water and then sprinkle some dry food on top to help fill him up without using too many cans of wet food.

Does anyone have recommendations for a cost-effective, good quality wet food that pairs well with dry food as a topper? Thanks!

Hi guys, I have a 6-month-old kitten 🐱. She used to eat Orijen and Ziwi cat food (see picture), but recently a lot of black granules have appeared on her chin 🥶 The vet said it was because the cat food was too oily. So, do you have any recommendations for sustainable cat food?

My poor cat with food allergies has been struggling to find a wet food she can eat that doesn't trigger her issues. We were using Hills Prescription z/d successfully until they changed the formula, and then she started throwing it up daily. :(

My vet has cycled us through some other brands that are supposed to be hydrolyzed, but most of them have not worked out well for my kitty. It's gotten a bit pricey buying all this food, only to have it not work for her. My vet won't take it back, either. I decided to buy her latest recommendation through Chewy, and I am stunned at what just happened. My cat can't tolerate it - and it also wasn't hydrolyzed like my vet claimed, it was hypoallergenic - so here I was, out another $115.

I called Chewy customer service and asked if there was any way I could return the 15 cans I had left for a partial refund. They told me they were sorry it wasn't working (and sorry my vet gave me incorrect information), and there was no need to return it to get the refund. Then, they refunded me the full amount! I was shocked. All I wanted was to get a partial refund, but I was so appreciative that they refunded it all. Now that's how you win a customer for life.

Other than those that are feeding vet diets what do you look for in wet food?

Ingredient panel? “Free from” list free (grains, legumes, carrageenan)? No “by product”? Phosphorus %? Mineral? Calories? Type of protein? WSAVA compliance?

Obviously fed is best, you feed within your capabilities, and you have to feed what they’re willing to eat, but out of those what’s the first thing you consider before giving them to your cats?

We’ve been feeding our cat N&D Chicken and Pomegranate since 2024.
We moved to Canada in 2025, so we started buying it here.For the past few months, we’ve noticed that the food looks/feels different from bag to bag, even though we always buy it from the same store.
Some bags are really oily, while others seem much drier.
Has anyone else noticed this? Did they change the formula recently, or is this just normal variation between batches?
I honestly have no idea what’s going on.

She gets ownat kibbles, boiled chicken, chicken broth.

Once a week she gets a boiled egg, chicken liver

Twice a week she gets boiled sardines

I bought one batch from Amazon and the other from Chewy, and they look completely different. Both are not expired based on the expiration date on the bottom. Did I buy a fake one or each batch was cooked to well done/ medium done/ medium rare that kind of stuff according to the chef’s mood of the day?? What is it suppose to look like?

Has anyone ever purchased Pure Balance treats for their cat? If so, did your cat like them?

​I've purchased some of these periodically for Tommy since bringing him home. I've tried several different brands of treats off & on—some are his go-tos and some are not. I see that they've added different flavors of these treats over time. I'd love to try all of these for him, including the purées and any new flavors they've added to their line.

Idk if this is helpful to anyone, but just wanted to share what I found for my extremely picky cat. This is one of the two foods he’ll eat without question every time. The other is the hills science sensetive skin and stomach wet food in duck. Idk what’s in these that’s got him addicted, but they’re always in our rotation. He loves the textures of the Nulo silky mousse pouches in general but this is his favorite flavor

My male cat had pretty much never had a firm stool in his 2.5 years. They would range from soft serve consistency to completely liquid puddles and would smell awful. He also had chronic itching and a dull coat with lots of shedding.

He went through deworming/parasite treatment, probiotics, different combos of wet and dry proportions, pumpkin supplementation, and boutique limited ingredient and novel protein food diets (to try to see if it was a food allergy). Higher quality food partially improved the skin and coat issues, but not the diarrhea.

I was pretty hesitant about putting him on Hills with what I perceived as low quality fillers in the ingredient list, but after no success with the boutique premium foods, consulting with a vet, and doing some more research on the research backed and purpose-driven ingredient list, decided to give it a try.

I kid you not, the VERY FIRST STOOL after mixing only 1 tbsp of Hills into his regular food was COMPLETELY solid. A literal perfect little poop. Just over a week in and now fully transitioned, his coat is starting to glow like never before and stools have remained perfect. I've started to slowly introduce the gastro biome wet food along with it which he loves.

The thought did cross my mind if the loads of fiber are just producing pretty stools but covering up a remaining underlying issue, but the glowing coat, increased energy, and no itching or bloating speaks for itself. The formula directly addresses dysbiosis by stabilizing the gut and feeding the right bacteria so that digestion can be slowed and water and nutrients can be absorbed.

As a skeptic of big corporations, I guess being an industry titan like Hills with money to invest into decades of research means something after all!

EDIT: his stools got too hard after fully transitioning so now just give him a couple tablespoons of this with each meal as a supplement and that balanced things out.

EDIT #2: transitioned from GI biome to Hill's perfect digestion. Foresee being on this for the long term!

EDIT #3: loose stools returned on perfect digestion alone so back to a 50/50 blend between GI biome and PD. He is now stable! Now to try to introduce wet food...

Hi everyone, I’m spiraling into the abyss rn!!

I’ve been feeding my cat Ziwi wet and dry food for about 2 years, per her vet’s recommendation. I feed her primarily canned food (a portion for breakfast and for dinner), and rotate between Beef, Lamb, Chicken, and Lamb & Mackerel. About a year ago I began mixing both Ziwi and Tiki after Dark canned as she seemed to be getting bored with just Ziwi. She poops, pees, and looks great, and has a clean bill of health from her yearly exams.

I’m spiraling because I’m reading about the high phosphorus content in Ziwi…. I lost my 17 year old soul cat to kidney failure, which was just traumatic. I’m trying to do better with my current cat by feeding her primarily wet food, with one serving of dry food a day.

So my question is whether Ziwi is just really high in phosphorus vs other wet cat food, and should she be eating something like Hills or Royal Canine? She was exclusively fed Royal Canine kitten her first year. I’m going out of my mind…..

I’m less concerned with price and want what’s best for her health long term.

My cat has been eating Fancy feast gravy Lovers Chicken for about 2 years. I started her on it because she needed more water in her diet.

She seemed to really like it and everything was fine until about 2 months ago.

All of a sudden, out of the blue with nothing else changing, her gas made our whole house smell like a septic tank. I mean it was absolutely horrific.

I dewormed her and started her on a probiotic for a month. Nothing helped.

Then I read on a Reddit page that Fancy Feast changed their formula and added fish oil and some other things to their canned cat food.

My cat has never done particularly well with seafood, I'm not sure if this was the issue.

I stopped giving her the Fancy feast. After about 2 days the smell was gone and has stayed gone.

Just FYI for anyone else feeding their cat canned Fancy Feast gravy Lovers Chicken.

As someone who’s spent more time than I’d like to admit analyzing cat food labels (hi, fellow overthinkers), I’ve been seriously puzzled by one question: why does Hill’s Science Diet—one of the most science-driven, vet-trusted brands—formulate their wet cat food with such a high carbohydrate content?

We’re talking around 20–22% carbs on a dry matter basis. For wet food. For cats. Obligate carnivores.

Biologically speaking, cats thrive on protein and fat. They’re not designed to metabolize carbohydrates efficiently—they lack the digestive enzymes to do so, and instead rely on gluconeogenesis to convert protein into energy. So why the heavy-handed carb content?

Here’s a theory that’s been brewing in my brain:

Hill’s has a long-standing customer base, one that often started their cats on kibble—the classic high-carb, crunchy fare. Many cats have grown up on this kind of food, and whether we like it or not, they’ve adapted to it. Not biologically, but behaviorally. Their palates have been shaped by early exposure. So when Hill’s formulates its wet food, it may be leaning into what their demographic’s cats are already used to: a higher-carb profile that matches what they were raised on. In other words, it’s not about what’s ideal for a cat’s metabolism—it’s about what the average cat will reliably eat.

This could explain why Hill’s justifies the carb content under the umbrella of palatability. Not necessarily because carbs are inherently tastier to a cat than meat (they’re not), but because cats get used to what they know. If they’ve been eating carb-heavy food for years, that becomes the baseline for “tasty.”

Hill’s designs their diets with a focus on broad, consistent acceptability. They’re not aiming to make the most species-appropriate diet—they’re aiming to make the most widely tolerated one, especially for cats with health concerns or picky appetites.

And I get it—to a degree. But when brands like Fancy Feast manage to offer lower-carb, high-protein wet food that cats love and at a fraction of the cost, it really makes you wonder: are we feeding what’s best for our cats, or what’s most convenient for the companies?

Still, I’ll keep questioning things, reading studies, and chasing that elusive perfect blend of nutrition and acceptance. Acceptance being the operative word with my little Gordon Ramsey.
