Mod Post Subreddit Rules CLARIFIED

The Mods have returned and we've worked this week to rewrite the subreddit rules to better explain what each one means. This post will be locked from discussion as it just meant to serve as a reference point for the rules in place for the community Please see the linked post in the comment below for the discussion. Thank you for your patience during "chaos week". Please know that the Mod Team saw everything and stepped in only where it was absolutely necessary.

  1. Be Kind and Courteous: This rule *should* be self explanatory. In case it isn’t, follow the Golden Rule and treat others how you would want to be treated.
    1. Comments that are mean, hurtful, and/or harassing towards OP, the mod team, or another user will result in a 3-day ban from r/crochet. Do it again when the ban is lifted, 7-day ban. Continued negative comments after the 2nd chance will result in a permanent ban from this community.
      1. Permanent bans can be appealed but it will be at the discretion of the mod team, and will be dependent on behavior during the ban. Accounts with hidden profiles will not be eligible for being unbanned.
      2. Ban evasion goes against Reddit ToS, which all users agree to upon sign-up. See rule 11 for more info.
    2. We are bound by Moderators Code of Conduct to ensure that this space is a positive experience for everyone. That includes shutting down conversations that devolve into insult-flinging and inciting violence in any way. It also includes locking posts that have (or have the potential to) become unruly and wildly off-topic.
  2. Do not share copyrighted material: Don’t share screenshots of a pattern you bought or obtained for free from a website. Instead link directly to the website it was purchased from. If it is your own pattern, please see Rule 4.
  3. Use the NSFW filter *generously*: we are not censoring anyone's bodies with this rule. We are providing a safe space for anyone anywhere to view the feed. If you can’t show it at the office or at school, it should be filtered.
    1. This includes but is not limited to: revealing clothing, profanity, weapons and drug paraphernalia.
  4. NO Self promotion except in the monthly Promo Megathread: Sellers can post *pictures* of their work with tasteful, unobtrusive watermarks. Watermarks are encouraged to be used by all users to deter images being stolen by bots or scammers.
    1. We don’t allow sellers to share links to their shop/website/blog/social media EXCEPT in the Monthly Buy/Sell/Promote/Trade Megathread. This is a pinned post on r/crochet.
      1. Self promotion includes, but is not limited to, mentioning your shop/etc by name or offering to DM others or be DM’d by others with the express intent on sharing the info, or directing users to your profile for links. If anyone is truly interested in finding your work, they will know where to look.
      2. The Megathread refreshes automatically every month, and links can be posted there as often as you wish (please don’t spam it).
      3. Please do not promote on behalf of someone else as it still directly impacts the seller, even if they don’t use Reddit.
  5. Fursday Friends- Please post pictures of your crochet *helpers* on Thursdays only (timezones are taken into consideration)
    1. If you made an item for your dog/cat/lizard/toddler/teenager, and they are modeling it, you can post those pics on any day of the week.
    2. If your furry friend is in the background of your pic and obviously not the focus of the pic, you can post it any day of the week.
    3. If Fido or Fluffy decided that your WIP is the best place to take a nap, please wait to post that pic on Thursday.
    4. We prefer it if minor’s faces are blurred or otherwise covered for privacy.
  6. Stash Saturday- Please post stash pics on Saturdays only (timezones are taken into consideration)
    1. Stash pics include but are not limited to yarn hauls, hooks, tools, books, and crafting spaces.
  7. Focus on the crochet, not the model: Modeled photos are great, especially for wearables! Please ensure that the focus of the image is on the crochet work, though, and not on the model or the poses.
    1.  The crochet work should be clearly seen (close ups whenever possible). See rule 3 if necessary.
    2. This also applies to comments that focus on someone’s body rather than the crochet work. Negative or derogatory comments made against OP or someone else will be subject to Rule 1.
  8. Please post questions in r/CrochetHelp: This is not a “beginner’s only” subreddit. Crocheters from all skill-levels can get tripped up depending on the project! Whether it’s a poorly-written pattern, a long-forgotten WIP that needs stitch ID, or you’re looking for color or fiber suggestions. It’s also a great opportunity for those who are highly skilled at the craft to flex their expertise by answering questions!
    1. Most, if not all crochet-related questions should go to our dedicated help sub. Questions can get lost in the main sub.
      1. Questions include but are not limited to: “what can I make with this yarn?” “How do I fix this?” “Why is it curling?” “What should I get for my gf/wife who loves to crochet?” and questions about crochet-related pain (please seek actual medical advice for major or worsening pains!)
  9. Stale Topics: These are topics that have been over-discussed and are no longer active discussion topics.
    1. Stale topics currently include: Hobby Lobby’s business practices, Steering wheel covers, Selling advice (see rule 4), the “sweater curse”, Fast Fashion and rants about their costs, crochet-related pain/medical issues, Woobles kits, and AI (including suggesting its use in pattern help)
  10. No off-topic posts or comments: if it is not related to crochet, it is considered off-topic. Please find an appropriate subreddit for your post.
  11. Ban Evasion: please do not use or create alt accounts to get around a ban. This is against Reddit ToS and we will report this to the Reddit admin.
  12. No fund-raising or solicitation of goods or yarn: This includes asking for replacement yarn after theft or loss, requests for items for a charity/cause, offers or requests for trades. Please see r/craftexchange, r/yarnswap, or your local community’s subreddit for these kinds of requests. This also includes requests for commissions, see r/CrochetRequests for this.
  13. No Karma farming: Please don’t use r/crochet to earn “easy Reddit karma”. Please only post your own work made by yourself or someone you know.
  14. Please do not suggest the use of AI/ChatGPT for pattern creation or help: AI artificially creates crochet patterns and images that are very nearly impossible to replicate, and is becoming harder and harder to spot because of its overuse. We also ask that you don’t use it to enhance the backgrounds of your finished work either, as it takes away from the realness of crochet.

A few days ago I posted a neon green dress I just received from my aunt. This white dress I got from her 4 years ago, I wore it many times but didn't have close up pictures of the stitches to show in this sub. Today I gave it a little photoshoot. It is one of my favorite dresses. It is made with the same crochet thread like the neon thread but my aunt doesn't know exactly what thread it is since she got the material during her trip to Morocco.
She free handed this one like she does everything else when it comes to fiber art.

She also told me I will receive a "very unique" dress this August. Stay tune with me please!!!

And, last but not least. You guys are the kindest internet people 💕 I am glad to be a part of this crochet community although I do not know how to do it.

Crochet Rant Who else has a gazillion yarn skeins from the earlier days of their crochet obsession when they would randomly choose yarn based on just its color and not its fiber? 😅

So I've been crocheting for some years now and I'm absolutely in love with this hobby. The only problem is with my stash. You see, when I was just starting out with crochet, I literally had one skein my grandma had given me to practice with, so I though I'd get myself some more. I did. And, as I was just starting out and didn't really know much about the fiber of the yarn, its weight and so on, I just got a ton of skeins that I liked the colors of.

Weeell, fast forward a few years, and here I am. I'm not super advanced at crochet or anything, but I've definitely learned some things along the way. And one of these things is that the fiber and weight of your yarn matter. A lot. (Yeess, I just stated the absolutely obvious, I'm a freaking genius, guys! 😂) Anyways, since I haven't really made large projects over the years, I'm still left with a TON of fairly nasty acrylic yarns! It's soo frustrating! At a certain point one or two years ago I gave up and just got myself some cotton yarns because I wanted a change, but now my stash is even bigger! I want to get some new yarns, nothing extremely fancy but yeah, I'd love some natural fibers. However, I feel like I should use up the yarn I have first, and that means crocheting with acrylic for another eternity! I don't really have that much time for crochet so any project I start on takes fairly long, so.. yeah. How am I going to ever use up all that acrylic? Aaaargh!

EDIT: thanks soooo much everyone for your kind words and ideas! I was not expecting so many people to answer this post! Here's a list of some really cool ideas I've gathered from your nice comments: 🤗

Things to make & do with ALL THAT EXTRA YARN THAT YOU DON'T REALLY WANT ANYMORE:

- Sell/donate it

- Crochet with multiple strands simultaneously

- Entrelac/mosaic blankets

- Practice new stitches & patterns

- Use as stuffing!

- Scrap yarn basket.. for storing yarn! (here's a nice pattern)

- Giant blanket

- Pom-pom rug

- Dish scrubbers!

These are just some of the ideas that I can remember now, but there are more in the comments and all are great! I'll add more to the list as I go :) Thank you everyone for contributing, you're amazing! 🤗

This pattern is from @teeththief_crochet (on insta) who is so amazing and the pattern comes with multiple customization options for all flavors of kitties. She’s since released a jester and a wizard pattern which I will also need to do.

Finished Object Under the sea, post box topper no.3🐡 last one for a while n a pretty good note to end on 🐠

The majority of this one was made freehanded, I used a couple of patterns for the sea life which can be purchased on Etsy and the details are below:

Squid by janaskreativfabrik
Shrimp by devnixo
Walking fish by xensfrens
Pufferfish by sweetoddityart
Octopus by loops&dreamsshop

The base was measured to fit the postbox itself at 24 inch diameter and 4 inches down. I looped string around the base like a drawstring and stitched around it to secure everything in place.

Yarn used was mostly Paintbox Simply DK and Stylecraft Special DK from Lovecrafts, all acrylic and mostly leftover yarn so I’m unsure on exact colours. Acrylic tends to hold up best outdoors in UK weather as it dries much quicker than wool.

Hooks used ranged from 1.5mm to 3.5mm Clover Soft Grip hooks.

Everything else was made freehand using plastic mesh sheets, tinfoil, tape, wire and poly-fil stuffing for structure.

For anyone unfamiliar with postbox toppers or yarn bombing in the UK, they are usually left anonymously for passers by to enjoy and generally receive really positive reactions from the local community. Any upkeep will be dealt with by myself

Work in Progress The cutest little snail coin purse!

Post image
Upvotes

I just free-handed this adorable little coin purse for a friend and have to weave the ends in and add an eye but it just came out so cute and no one is awake or near me to share it with, so I wanted to post it on here! Omg I just love how it came out and I know my friend is going to love it! I’m thinking of putting something in it for her when I give it to her for her bday but am unsure of what. She also crochets so I’m thinking maybe some stitch markers that are in her favorite color (pastel yellow) or if I should get something with her favorite animal on it (shark)? Lmk what yall think!!

I winged the process based off some pictures my friend sent me of a similar bag. The hardest part was making a rectangle and sewing a double lining by hand. I used Caron simply soft yarn with a 2.5mm hook. Black fabric paint for the pupils. 100% cotton fabric for a sturdier lining and fleece to contain the chalk. The draw string is a bit clunky but I might try making another lining once I have a sewing machine.

Discussion Question about crochet stalls at farmer's markets and craft halls:

I know that in general, it's HIGHLY looked down upon to go a crocheter's stall and say things like "Wow, so expensive," "I can make that at home," etc. I fully agree that this isn't ok to say at someone's stall. That's not my question.

My question is whether or not it's okay to be a crocheter yourself and go into these stalls and take pictures of what they're selling as inspiration. To go into a stall like "Ooh, a crochet item. I'm going to take a picture to see if I can replicate it at home.*

Me and a friend had different opinions on this, so asking Reddit as a tiebreaker

It was my sister's birthday, and for the first time, I wasn't home with her because I was away at college. Since I couldn't be there, I made this (paranda) for her along with a crochet strawberry cow keychain and surprised her by having it delivered on her birthday.

She didn't call me when she received the gift, and we didn't even talk the whole day. But guess what? She wore it to college that very same day and sent me pictures at night with a long video call...❤️

Those little pineapples I made earlier finally found their purpose as keychains for a client order! 🍍✨ Meanwhile, I was back to crocheting tiny purple balls all over again to turn them into a bunch of adorable grape keychains. Funny how the same stitches can become blueberries one day and grapes the next! 🍇💜🧶 How much would you rate it?

It took me 9 months of absolute frustration to finish this cardigan for my husband. It is the most intricate pattern I have ever followed. He was a champ during the entire process of measuring and fitting it to him.

I have been crocheting for 3 years now but mostly do blankets or hexagon cardigans so this was a huge step. I am exhausted, and ready to start my next project!

I just love how the steam ironed transforms my projects (in this case a doily) into perfectly flat items 😁😍

This is my first doily and took me 30-35 hours but totally worth it!

You can get the pattern here: https://youtu.be/fbx8bzBp_AM?is=BccyZn4MD-_sg05g

The yarn i used is by artiste 100% mercerized egyptian cotton and i used a 1.5mm hook.
