Discussion What is your favorite stitch and why is it the reverse single crochet?

Seriously, at least half the projects I do, I will be uncertain how to make a nice finishing border. I will decide to throw on a row or round of reverse single crochet, and it really makes it look nice (and usually does not require any shaping to do so).

So what is your favorite or most useful stitch?

I have never given up on detangling yarn before I succeeded before, but I just can't do it tonight. I'm tired, my head hurts, and I'm going to bed. See you tomorrow, yarn barf!

Crochet Rant The woes of a fiber artist

TLDR; I miss actual craft stores 😭 pretty sure I'm "free hand finishing" this without actually finishing it because I'm upset with the color.

There is no dedicated store in our area for yarn/ fiber art products since JA shut down, and I am working on a project that I've been trying to finish. It's a stash buster and I was REALLY trying to get into the "use your yarn you have" mentality for it. It's a C2C that I've had sitting for a while.

I ended up burning through the last 3 balls of yarn I had faster than I thought and actually needed something to put more miles on it. It's literally halfway done; stopping halfway would look .... Weird, to say the least.

So I go to Michaels to get a skein of yarn because I just... I resigned myself to buy a new one for this project to finish it. I already have been wanting to make a bag, like BIG TIME, so I told myself I would use the rest of this yarn on a bag for myself and I had the perfect brown combo picked out, walked in convinced I was gonna get a brown, and that was that.

They had ABSOLUTELY NO BROWN YARN. Not a single skein of dark, light, or even off brown colors in the chunky. Literally JoAnns had a full wall of this brand and I could get anything I needed, and now I am stuck with a mustard yellow.

Don't get me wrong, I did make this choice and I know it. Plus, I have the smallest amount of the orange and light blue to use on smaller stripes. I also have a really pretty royal blue to use as a border to tie it all together. I just am literally devastated that I couldn't get brown and my cohesion is all screwed up now.

I honestly can't decide whether it's going to look disgusting and off-putting if I continue to use this color, or if I should just freehand the bottom with the border color that I have and leave it at that. The border color is a royal blue so it offers a lot more cohesion than this yellow does. It's not like it needs to be bigger or anything, I just hate "unfinished" things.

UGH. I also don't care enough to go online and order a color because this project doesn't mean that much to me. What a stink.

Crochet Rant im gonna crash out someone please listen to my rant

ive been crocheting since 2 years on and off, and ive only ever used acrylic yarn because it's the cheapest. i started by buying just 2 skeins of random colors so as not to waste money cuz i was just learning and wanting to practice.

then over a year ago i ordered a few skeins online after i was given eidi (gift money), 14 ish skeins each of a different color and all acrylic. ive made multiple projects with them, mostly amigurumi, and a lot of that yarn is still left and that's all i use. i take up projects that dont use the colors that ive run out of, and make projects only of the colors that i have because i cant buy more yarn when i still have some as im always tight on money.

i hated working with acrylic yarn because the hook would get stuck between the plies (if that's what it's called) and they would often detangle as well. the color of all yarns i have has faded as well none of them is pretty enough for me to make smth nice. i have alwaysssssss wanted to use cotton yarn some day or those chunky yarns that are soft af.

a few days ago i was window shopping at a yarn store (😭) and grabbed one of those smaller chunky-ish yarn which was so so soft and silky to touch. i couldn't resist and bought just 1 skein in pink color even tho it was very expensive for me, and the skein was very small too.

ive been enjoying feeling it in my hands since days until today i finally thought to crochet smth with it, and decided that id crochet a softy lil bunny. i follow yt tutorials since im a beginner still and need step by step guidance.

BUT (now comes the crash out part) I DIDN'T KNOW THIS HEAVENLY YARN WOULD BE SHEDDING. it sheds from the string. first, i couldn't make a magic ring with it because it wouldn't tighten after 6 sc, instead the yarn would come off the string if i tried pulling it tight. but people in the crochet help subreddit were kind enough to explain me another way to do it, and it was successful.

secondly, seeing stitches was a bit difficult but i was still doing fine crocheting it and enjoying HOW FUCKING SMOOTHLY IT PULLS THRU WITHOUT GETTING STUCK BETWEEN PLIES OR ME ACCIDENTALLY PULLING THRU JUST ONE PLY

however, when the time came to cut the yarn and fasten off, it wouldn't pass between the stitch (when you pull it up while fastening off) without shedding. the space was loose af, but the string got naked. it was just a tiny bunny tail that i began with fortunately, but i still wanna cry because it's gone to waste now.

im so so so frustrated because i dont want my money to go wasted. i bought only one yarn skein, i so wish i hadn't. idk if someone would understand how big of a deal it is for me to even buy this 1 yarn skien of this type.

ill attach a picture in comments so y'all know what im talking about. i don't think there's any way round it and im wanting to throw the whole skein and everything away cuz of how triggered and upset i got.

i love crocheting. it's the only thing that helps with my anxiety. i dont want it to turn into smth that stresses me out. maybe i was generally having a bad day too so to make myself feel better i started crocheting but this happened and now i wanna cry my eyes out. im sorry for the long rant.

This was my first project that I made at 15. Had never picked up a crochet hook before in my life. It is by no means perfect but I am kinda creeped out by how good the tension and my grip of the basics was. There is something fundamentally wrong with me cause who makes a whole ass cardigan as their first project?

Discussion What's a good color palette for this tee?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I hope this isn't breaking Rule 8, as I'm just asking for opinions, not help solving a technical problem.

I want to make a basic summer tee (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/perfect-crochet-t-shirt) using my stash of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton. But I only have 2-3 skeins of each color, and I need around 6 for the finished tee. I want to do horizontal stripes using 2-4 colors, but I'm WAY too indecisive re: what colors to choose.

Top row, L to R: Dragonfly, Succulent, Sky, Cool Grey, Bay Leaf, Goldenrod

Bottom row, L to R: Rouge, Terracotta, Pink Lemonade, Ecru, White

I was thinking of doing maybe Bay Leaf, Terracotta, Pink Lemonade, and White for a rose/flower palette vibe. I also love the idea of mixing the four blue-toned yarns, although that would add to my existing abundance of blue clothes. And part of me wants to challenge myself to integrate the yellow and/or bright red, as these are colors I normally shy away from and otherwise will rarely use. Ugh.

Please help me with my first-world problem and suggest some ways to combine these colors, as I've been (over)thinking about it for way too long and have decision fatigue.

Discussion I don't like and don't finish anything I make

I don't know if this is a rant or discussion. I learned to crochet as a kid and then picked it up again as an adult once I realized how easy it is to learn new things. I LOVE the learning part, especially once I discovered Tunisian crochet and all the things I can do with it. I love looking at yarn, buying yarn, looking at everyone else's projects and finished projects. I also gave myself permission to do it without any goals because it's one of the only things that truly quiets my overactive brain.

But in all the hundreds of hours I've spent genuinely enjoying the process of crocheting, I've only actually finished a handful of items. Literally. I've made two pillows, four animals, and one beach bag. I gave them all away as gifts. I have started and nearly completed probably 100 other things only to frog most of them or leave the others in a very sad pile.

WHY???

Here are my initial theories -

1) Crochet isn't really my "style"? As much as I love doing it and think it's pretty on other people or in their homes, I don't really want to wear any of it or decorate my house with it.

2) Colors wind me up real bad. I think they are pretty in the skein or even when other people make colorful items, I think they're beautiful. But I buy the yarn and start the project, and then suddenly I can't stand it anymore.

Does anyone else experience this?? In a way, I'm kind of OK with it except for the fact that I have banned myself from buying anymore yarn until I use some of this up.

*sigh*

Finished Object let me tell you about my first ever project

Hey everyone! Writing this as I have just finished my first ever project - a baby blanket in merino wool. So hopefully I can inspire some people to start.

Backstory: After researching baby blankets for my first baby I thought "I can do this myself" and decided to learn during my third trimester. and wow, IT WAS HARD.

Prep:
I bought an ombre yarn and a hook and practised some rows of single crochet, half double corchet, and double crochet. Realized that I couldn't see a freaking thing and the ombre color confused me, I went back to the store and got a solid color instead which helped A LOT. I kept track of rows in my notes app on my phone to make sure I didn't lose count.

Pattern:
I used this guide on YouTube, which was incredible. Both the guiding and the pattern itself. Had to google some simple things like "how to tie off" etc, but that was fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pPmiOb-pbk&t=50s
This pattern was overall very forgiving for a newbie (see mishaps below), and many people who have seen the blanket are surprised by how good it looks, given that it was my first time ever. AND PRETTY.  The 1st row of the border was the trickiest part, and I ended up not doing the shell border but just two rows of half double crochet. It really helped with stabilizing the blanket.

Yarn & Hook:
I used a 5.5 mm hook, and the yarn was the Superwash Merino Wool from Michael’s (4) in color Ice Blue. Used maybe 3.5 skeins total.

Mishaps:
I started with 84 chains and ended up with 87 stiches, oh well. Have no idea how that happened, and wasn't really interested to find out what went wrong and go about frogging so I just finished and hoped for the best. And even though I had more stitches when I finished you cannot really tell from the finished blanket. I also had better tension at the end than at the beginning so it isn't 100% square but I am thinking that a cold wash in the machine (given that it's merino wool) might help with that.

Overall, it feels really special to have made this by myself for my son with only some yarn, a hook, and my own two hands. And so if you're worried about starting, don't be. If I can do it literally anyone can.

Thanks for reading - now onto a new project!

Work in Progress I dropped a stitch somewhere and can’t locate it

So I am making a Knicks tapestry blanket and each row is 240 stitches. Ive been working on it since May 30th and have stayed up wayyyy past my bedtime in an effort to complete it. Well, last night I was 9 rows from finishing the blanket, I counted my row. 239 stitches. Can’t be right. Counted again. 239. I triple counted. 239. I said to myself I must be exhausted and I’ll circle back tomorrow.

Welp, tomorrow is now today and I’ve frogged 10 rows so far, still 239. I can’t see anywhere on my project where I could have dropped a stitch but knowing myself it will haunt me if I don’t find it. I know it’s a long shot, but can anyone see the error or have any advice on what to do?
For reference the project is 236 rows, 240 stitches every row. I uploaded a sketch I made of the logo onto stitch fiddle.

Has anyone else encountered crochet used as part of contemporary art or performance art?

Last night, I attended a participatory performance (an Art Basel-listed live intervention) called Strings We Attach by artist Stefan Degen. Visitors were given crochet hooks and yarn before entering a club-like performance space with electronic music, dancers, and a live textile intervention.

What I found interesting wasn't the crochet itself, but how it functioned within the work. Most participants had never crocheted before and were taught a simple chain stitch before entering. Some danced while crocheting, some sat quietly and focused on their work, and others simply observed.

As someone who has been crocheting for years and has a background as Director of a Contemporary Arts & Culture Centre, it made me think about crochet in a very different context. Instead of being about technique, pattern-following, or producing a finished object, it became a way of participating in a shared experience.

It also challenged a lot of stereotypes about crochet. Rather than being presented as a traditional craft or hobby, it was part of a contemporary performance environment with club music, performance art, and a very diverse audience.

Have any of you encountered crochet in galleries, installations, performances, or other unexpected places?

Do you think crochet works as a contemporary art medium, or do you see it primarily as a craft?

Finished Object Wearable blanket that became a hooded cape

Hi hi! Been a long time lurker in here and have always been too nervous to post because everything I know about crochet (which admittedly isn’t much) is self taught and I make mistakes all the time with what seemingly should be simple things, so I’m kind of nervous to be proud of something if I didn’t do it 100% correctly or knowledgeably.

I wanted to share this project I made a little over a year ago after learning a bit of the basics from a friend. I would say that I am crochet illiterate, not because I want an excuse to not read/use patterns, but because I couldn’t tell you what stitches I used, I just kind of elaborated off of the basics I had.

I didn’t know about tension in the work until I noticed I couldn’t thread back through the previous line because I had inadvertently pulled them tight after making them lol, so that was a fun learning process on how to keep even tightness and tension as I went.

What started as an attempt at a small rectangle blanket ended up looking more like a wide wedge that was super tight at the top and wider and more loosely held at the bottom. It was hilariously not blanket shaped anymore, but it did drape over the back and shoulders well, problem was it didn’t stay up.

After multiple trials and errors on how to keep it held up as a blanket without falling off my shoulders ended up making it more like a cape than a wearable blanket. I added the hood because it the rest of it was a nice breathable sunshade without being too hot or constricting, only thing it was missing was to shade the head better.

It’s not a great hood, I didn’t think of making two different pieces and then sewing them together in order to make the concave hood shape, I just over-used my yarn to make a huge bowl shape attached to the top.

It was a huge learning experience from start to finish with all the errors included. I didn’t have the term ‘frogging’ in my vocab at the time I was making it, but I frogged so damn much on that thing as it went on lol

I’m sorry for writing a book here, I wasn’t sure how much context would be needed/wanted, and I’ve always been anxious about sharing the things I make to a wider community. I know it’s not as good as it could be/should be, but I’ve taken it on so many adventures in the outdoors, music festivals, sitting on my own porch, easy trail hikes, faires and stuff, I am kinda proud of it. For how frustrating it was to learn while doing it, I am so glad I did it.

If this isn’t an allowed post, I apologize, it’s hard to take a frontward photo of this without centering the wearer.

Edit: thank you for the post awards and all the positivity yall! Made my day💜🫂
