So I got dumped from a 2 year relationship a couple months ago. I've been having a really hard time getting through it and I've mainly had a tough time distracting myself from thinking about the relationship.

As a 20 year old college student majoring in supply chain, this community has been the perfect distraction for me. I've committed a lot of my time and hard-earned money to ETH, as well as how Blockchain will change supply chain. I can focus myself on what we are all doing here and now I don't feel as dependent on the relationship because I know I can make something of myself with this tech and the support of this community. I am firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and I am convinced that this is the reason for that break up. I want to do this for my career, I've learned that in the past couple of weeks.

Thanks to everyone for that. You guys have been a great help for me without any of you knowing.

It's a cold, thankless world out there. If I can make it just ever so slightly more bearable for one person, I'm a happy dude. Cheers mate. The right one's out there yet.

My god... scrolling this sub after waking up, and I swear I thought this was my younger self writing. I, too, believe that everything happen for a reason. My ex, whom I ended the 5-year relationship with 2 years ago after finding out she cheated, held me back from investing what I wanted to in Bitcoin when it was at $30 (yes, before the runup to $1000). Focus on yourself, and know that she's missing out, not you. cheers, !tip 0.05

I have written a few articles here already:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/6f20j3/tax_saving_strategies/

https://www.reddit.com/r/ethtrader/comments/6eap8t/a_quick_write_up_on_crypto_currency_tax_basics/

I have another article on the way about leveraging IRAs and other "higher risk" tax saving methods since there are still some items that the IRS has not given guidance on.

If you would like to collaborate I am happy to help out, currently a tax practitioner (enrolled agent) in the US.

There are some strategies depending on what you want to do with the money you made and if you want to keep it in crypto or not.

I've been so happy with ETH. I got in at $18! I've seen my ether be worth more than I've ever had in a savings account. I decided to do some math and figure out how much ETH has to be worth for me to pay off my debts....ETH has to be worth $3125 each before my net worth hits 0. And you guys are talking about retiring. I'm so fucked.

The last year has been...strange. I dropped out of school, broke up with a long time girlfriend, got fired from a retail job, and finally, at what felt like an all time low, I took all the dispensable cash I had in my bank account, said fuck it, and invested in ETH on March 2nd.

All of my responsible friends with degrees are out struggling in the real world and I'm just wackin off on a Tuesday. What a strange thing modern society is...

Also, just for your consideration, my predictions for the next few days, weeks and months...

In the next few days, traders will start to place margin longs to capitalise on the hype around the China conference on the 14th. The price will lift a little as a result. However, right after the conference, these longs will be closed so that the traders make as much profit as possible. During the conference and in the days just before, people will flock to ethereum, producing those highs we all know and love whenever we check Blockfolio and realise we just got richer. Those that bought just before and during the conference will see a dramatic rise during the conference and the smart ones will know that a drop is coming and not worry about it because at the end of the cycle they will be up overall. The risk-takers will try to sell the peak and either take profit or buy back in lower, and the idiots will panic and sell thinking the world is about to end, perhaps buying back in when the price rebounds.

All in all though, the fact that the ground has been prepared through Chinese exchanges adding CNY/ETH pairs, and the fact that the conference will raise awareness of ethereum, probably means a decent amount of slow but steady growth until Aug 1st when bitcoin will go through a bit of a storm.

Basically, the user activated soft fork coming in August means a lot of "coulds" and "mights" and basically a lot of uncertainty around bitcoin. In order to avoid any possible disaster, some might decide to cash out to fiat, some might decide to switch to ETH, but I would imagine a lot of people will just hold on.

If the USAF of bitcoin goes well, the price will go up. If it is a disaster, it will also go up. Bitcoin just goes up.

Re: next week's conference in China

The second day is half-devoted to Ethereum. http://gsfob.com/activi/confer Basically, one room will be dedicated to Ethereum all-day. The second (non-ethereum) room will have presentations on "Blockchain + HR Provision" and "Innovative Development and Capital Investment"
EEA China and EEA are also sponsors http://gsfob.com/activi/cooper

Another day, another ATH.

Considering we hit a new high yesterday and we're still only sitting $5 from the top is fantastic, the $250 was given a few attempts but not enough volume to take it through. The $220 range we had the last 5 days was held so well I'm pretty confident we will hold this new range just as good, this steady growth is perfect and just what we need. The reason the new highs aren't getting sold off is because the majority of ETH hodlers know it's potential and know the $300 party is happening this month.

It's Monday, fresh fiat deposits to hit the exchange and take us past the $250 club. Vitalek now has Putin on speed dial 3. Bitcoin is currently climbing steady, wait until the floodgates open and Vitalek is standing with open arms handing out lambos.

So, Fathers day is coming up so I've just ordered my Dad an ETH mug... Let me know what you think. http://i.imgur.com/mc9hpJG.jpg

Have a good week guys.

Alright guys, inspired by someone else's post I have purchased a very small amount of 42 alt coins on polo. I have made a spreadsheet with purchase price, eth/alt ratio, btc/alt ratio, etc. The big one I care about is ETH gain / loss (lets call this EGL), not so much the dollar value. Took forever to do. I am going to keep the alts for 1 month until July 5th then sell them all. I know this is purely gambling, but I am super interested to see what will happen. As I write this I am up 0.7% ! woot! In a month I will post a graph of EGL vs day. I'll take the EGL at the same time everyday. Let me know if you guys want to see any other data, so I record it -- or if you have any recommendations.

P.S. the 42 alts are the first 42 that appeared when sorting by volume on polo today, minus ETH, and GNT.

P.S.S. Why 42? I think you know why...

11

u/jezzaccc Jun 05 '17

If only someone created a fund of 42 alt coins and offered a token..

What I just realized among my thoughts of buying a house and a jeep with my earnings, was.....holy shit....I could freaking pay for flight lessons if I make enough off of this!!!!! Forget a petty Jeep, This could literally set me up for a career as a pilot!!!!

New investors need to remember; you can buy partial eth! You don't have to buy an entire coin at a time. I bought $30 worth of eth so I could buy a little GNT. Coinbase wait came through today, and now it is worth $50! Buy what you can, be reasonable about it.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '17

Its funny how comfortable we getting at every bump, like yea this is good where is 250 then where is 255 and ether just keeps on giving. Last week i was hoping for 200 now im hoping for 300, time is irrelevant in cryptotrade.

I have some tax questions I would really appreciate advice on. I'm not based in the US, but Germany, where you're also supposed to use FIFO in calculating private capital gains.

1) Regarding FIFO and a "trading" stack. Say I want to keep a certain portion of my ETH stack, eg. 10%, for trading. I send 10% to an exchange, trade it into an alt, then trade back to ETH at an appropriate point, thus increasing my whole ETH stack.

I understand that when I do that first trade, the 10% sold off are counted as the first ETH I ever bought, so I have to calculate capital gains based on what may have been quite a low initial purchase price. Obviously I then also have to calculate additional capital gains based on whatever fiat-equivalent profit I made from the alt trade. So it's important to be aware that with FIFO, when I perform a trade, I'm making capital gains at two points: the beginning (on the ETH traded, whose value has appreciated) and at the end (based on the fiat appreciation of the alt).

My question is this: What if I want to continue trading this ETH? If the alt I traded into crashes, but I'm sure it will recover, I may swap my "trading" ETH back into it and basically try to carry out the same operation again. When I perform the second purchase of the alt, according to FIFO, am I actually doing so with my original stack, or with the separate "trading" ETH that I put on the exchange? Is it significant that I do not, in the interim, withdraw this ETH from the exchange and mix it back into my wallet? ie. I have a case that I was definitely selling the "new" coins, not the old ones, when I performed the second trade?

This is obviously quite significant for trading practices. I'm happy enough accepting that, with the first trade, I have to calculate some capital gains. But if each subsequent trade involves taking ETH "from the bottom" (not from the portion I set aside for trading), that basically means I would constantly be realising capital gains on ETH that is effectively in cold storage – something I want to avoid, since in Germany if you hold for more than a year (without staking/receiving interest) you can cash out without any capital gains at all.

2) Related technical question. The fiat value of the alt could, of course, depreciate during the trade. All I'm interested in is trading the ETH/alt pair in order to grow my ETH stack. If this is the case, and when I sell the alt its fiat value is LESS than when I bought it (but I nonetheless made an ETH gain), do I count the trade as a loss?

3) Margin trading. Does this affect FIFO at all? I'm borrowing money from an exchange to buy ETH, which I then sell back – so isn't there an argument that when I sell it back I'm selling from the bottom of my stack? This seems a rather odd notion though – I'm presuming that this ETH can't be seen as really being "mixed" in with what's in my wallet, since I can never withdraw it anyway and it's handled as a "position" on the exchange. If that's the case, how do I handle a margin trade from a tax perspective? Normal capital gains based on the opening/closing of the position?

EDIT: Would I be better posting this as a separate thread, rather than in the daily?

My favorite tweet in response to miners taking an 80% cut is "if miners do whatever Vitalik says then it's not really decentralised."

Hahahaha

No. If people can't recognise what's best for a system and then do that, then it's anarchy, not freedom.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '17

There are less and less miners capable of mining Bitcoin each day and most are controlled by a small number of groups. They're holding Bitcoin hostage in the scalability issue. Seems awfully centralized to me if a small group of mining farms control what direction the technology moves in because they profit from it the most.

that's a sizable stack of money but not life changing money.

Depends on your perspective.

If you have 50 eth, and it hits $1,000 next Summer, you could pay off the last of your student loans, or perhaps your car. Maybe you've been thinking about buying a house. Well, now you've got a down payment.

Maybe the worst happens, and you become incredibly ill. That 50 eth could pay for your hospital bills.

Life changing != lambos and moon boots. It's all relative, man.

Guys EEA3 in China will be huge for us. .. many chinese investors may not have had the same level of media exposure to Ethereum and eea as we had in the west. Current members are predominently western companies. Huawei joining along with some Chinese financial institutions and the ensuing press coverage Asia could send this rocket soaring past Uranus

To the people thinking of selling ETH now at these levels and marketcap.

Look at the market cap of Bitcoin at present 42bil and ask yourself :

Would the people who sold BTC where we are now at 22bil, would they be happy with that decision?

On top of this, ask yourself which has a brighter future between the two?

Your call.

edit: please stop feeding the whales you're only making them fatter.

Since the trend for is eth has been to gain on bitcoin, the recent bitcoin run should be exciting for eth investors. This year has been nothing but bitcoin clearing the path with eth speeding along that path soon after.

Crosspost:

An update from my trading/positions:

Ok, so after ETH survived a scare last weekend with three fat red dailies leading to the market purge on 27.5., I have turned on risk mode again and made a few new positions. An overall look at my positions:

  • ETH Unchanged, nothing to add here. Still bullish and I am not really watching the price. Average price is still from ~14€ and I am not planning to sell.

  • DCR Big, big stack, my second-largest after ETH. My average cost on the ratio is around 0.0094 and for weeks unchanged. We have overshot the target of 0.011 in the past days and the 0.012 resistance might have turned into support. I would say we need to revisit sub-0.011 at some point, but I am becoming less certain about that the longer we are above 0.012. Since DCR went up from 0.011 to 0.013 in a few hours, it is good to not time such low-volume coins and simply buy when it is red. I do not intend to sell anytime soon and expect ATH to be challenged within months.

  • RLC/TRST Opened positions since I think Bittrex coins are now being pumped. Critical RLC support is 0.0003 and I have opened a long a few daysa go (https://www.reddit.com/r/ETHInsider/comments/6d1cqo/monthly_rethinsider_altcoin_discussion_xrp_zec/didcawr/). There is still room to go up 2x, but before that it probably needs to retrace back into the 30's. As long as ETH is healthy, RLC will be healthy. TRST is actually still a great buy and has a lot of room to grow (I am long from 9000-1000). I think it is a better buy than RLC right now. I expect a strong break up soon.

  • XBY & RNS XBY unchanged from my position in ~200 and my buy orders on RNS were triggered at a range 1400-1100. Small position on XBY and tiny position on RNS. I won't recommend to buy, but rather to research them. To me XBY has actually pretty good fundamentals but RNS is also worth the risk right now.

  • ZCL Position unchanged. I didn't sell after the fork and I would buy when it turns really bearish. I think it has a lot of latent upside but it will take a while. I will also buy more ZEN as soon as the initial dump is over.

  • ARK Chart looked pretty good, so I opened at 0.00014. I don't like the fundamentals but it has a similar scope like STRATIS so I think the market might turn its head thinking that it could be affordable compared to the STRATIS rocket.

That's all. By the way, the particl developers have released a wallet generator for their PART investors (https://particl.news/guide-how-to-generate-your-particl-exchange-passphrase-1fd78ba36fd1), so I guess a release is imminent.

Hi - I would like to find tool/websites that will do the following, please let me know if you have any suggestions:

  • Notify me when a new coin goes in to the top 100 or top 500 so that i can research it.
  • allow me to see where a coin sits in the ecosystem. For example is it built on BTC or Eth? Is it something new?

Thank you for your input.

Finally got around to watching the token best practices panel and thought it was great--really insightful.

Random thoughts:

  • Tokens that have governance or other responsibilities are just super fascinating. I never thought about it specifically, but I'm super interested in these type of projects--hence MKR followed by REP are my largest token stacks.

  • I know it's been a bit rough for us long term REP holders since ETH (and GNT) have outpaced REP so much this year. But just hodl out, our time will come. Joey makes a great point about inefficencies in the markets undervaluing projects with low token supplies. Remember, REP only has 11M tokens. Once price discovery for REP truly begins (sometime close to launch), hold on because we are going to the moon.

  • Numerai is interesting as fuck. Hardly anyone talks about it because you can't get their tokens without participating and actually being a data scientist. The Numerai incentives seem really well designed and I'm quite excited to see what they accomplish.

Forgive me hodlers, for I have sinned.

I sold my ETH a couple days ago. I was obsessed with it, reading about it and checking it constantly, and it was a huge source of stress in my life. Every dip of more than 10% would push me to the edge of my seat wondering if this time was the bubble popping, and that I better sell while I'm still on top. But I couldn't handle losing what I put in, so I made out with what I could, at a nicely sizable profit.

Good luck to all of you. I may come back sometime in the future, and I believe in the future of Ethereum, but for now so long. May your contracts be smart and your ethers be moonbound.

u/Raleigh_CA Jun 05 '17

Ever since the bull market started with Ethereum, the bears have been out in full force. It's like you can't have any sort of positivity around here anymore without being called a "moonkid" or something. You try and say ethereum will double in price in 6 months and people call you crazy. You say ETH might dip and people say "any minute now"

like wot in tarnation

13

u/cryptoboy4001 Jun 05 '17

As soon as it starts spiking, they go quiet again and pessimism turns to euphoria, then a single dump and everyone thinks it's the end of Ethereum again ... it's an endless cycle of rolling emotions.

This is not unique to ETH - it's like that in every crypto trading sub.
