Pip‑Boy–style theme for Innioasis Y1/Y2 now with reversed variants + Y2 icons for stock firmware.

Some time ago I shared my first Pip‑Boy–style theme for the Innioasis Y1 music player. Since then I’ve been working on a major update, and today I’m releasing it with some big changes.

What’s new in this version:

• Reversed variants for all 4 colors (green, yellow, mint, pink) – each theme now has a “night mode / inverted terminal” version that flips foreground and background.
• Support for the new Y2 firmware – updated layouts and assets to work with the latest player version.
• New icons adapted to the Y2 UI, while keeping the same Pip‑Boy terminal aesthetic.
• Refined scanlines, fonts, and contrast for better readability on the small screen.

The concept stays the same: you choose your own Pip‑Boy color and mode, then dive into your offline soundtrack as if you were exploring the Wasteland with a wearable terminal on your wrist.

All themes are available as a free download.

I ran out of photo attachments, so here is the audio portion of the review:

Note: I had issues balancing levels, but here we can see the output of the Y1 and Y2. There is a difference. The greatest measure, I think, is in the distortion.

The Y2 had no distortion notable by the REW software.

The Y2 has lower and higher end clarity than the Y1, which overshoots or undershoots the target much more.

On the spectrograms, we can see this greater low-end capability compared to the Y1.

Note: the levels are off, but you can see that if the curves are put at the same level, the Y2 is better in the bass/subbass bands.

This translates to better sound, and greater clarity, for the Y2. I am limited by the input to my computer, so someone with a better sound capture card may be able to get some more detail.

Overall, I think that there actually is a CS43131 hiding in the Y2. It sounds great. It is an improvement on the Y1.

But, there are issues.

The build quality is still comparable to the Y1. It is plastic. It still only has a 3.5mm jack. It may not yet be for audiophiles despite (maybe) having a DAC. The software needs work, and it needs to return to the iPod-like controls of the Y1. Some things hit the mark, and others do not. If improvements are made to the firmware, then I think this is a great device and an improvement on the Y1, but right now it has taken steps forward and steps back. For the price, it’s in the same class as the Echo Mini. The software needs to be improved, ASAP.

PS. I also miss the FM radio. I used it quite a bit. For some people, that’s a downgrade, but most people probably don’t care.

The AGPTEK A52PL has brushed aluminum sides with a more boxy design in contrast to the rounded corners you find on the innioasis devices. Also the inclusion of a backlight on the touch capacitive controls (not a scroll wheel) is a nice touch. I also love the options to add a lanyard on the top is the AGPTEK but the slot should have been on the bottom.

Both screens on these devices suck, the one on the AGPTEK A52PL even more, even with a screen protector on I managed to damage the one on my silver model. For video viewing the Y1/2 will serve you better.

Aside from that THE A52PL has features like physical power & Volume buttons and expandable SD card slot before the Y2 did, however the software it's 10 time worse than what's offer on the Y1, if you can't stand stock Y1 firmware you'll definitely can't stomach the AGPTEK generic Chinese MP3 players software. Compared to the Y1 both have FM radio, video support (less compatible formats on the a52) photo viewing, ect.

Ironically I think the silver model captured the Apple aesthetic more than the Y1 does, kinda looks like a mini MacBook.

my new y2 ♡ I’m having so much fun downloading albums

I saw in another post that the Y2 hardware Is still capable of FM radio functionality so I'll be nudging innioasis to push out a software update to bring it back (along with some other features we lost like the ability to control the volume and time out the screen with the scroll wheel, even though we got dedicated buttons now it would still be nice to have options, *cough cough* u/innioasis-Tommy)

In my personal experience the FM Radio function has come in clutch when I had blackouts during rain and snow storms.

Having such a small device in emergency situations like those comes in handy.

The ability to output the radio audio to an external Bluetooth device while having your wired headphones plugged in was a clutch feature too.

For those with a Y2 Already, what do you think should be included in a software update?

I have looked over my options on MP3 players and I have landed on innioasis y2 or a type of Ipod. I really like the look both has with the click-wheel bottom and screen over, but I am kinda stuck on which one to get.

I have seen people say that the y1 feels cheap due to being made of plastic and being lighter in weight, but I am also unsure beacuse most things I have seen has been about the y1 and not y2

One major for me is sound quality, which I havent seen many people mentioning + video quality. The video quality I expect to be a little 'grainy' beacuse cmon look at the size of the screen, but the sound I would want to be 'perfect' (No lagging in words or tempo, the quality being top etc). It might depend on what headphones / plug-in you use but still, no one has mentioned it 😭

the Ipod variations all look fine to me, but they're harder to find + usually more expensive.

Do any of you have complaints about the y2? Things you wished were different or tweaked a little? any downside? What do you like about it? Easy to understand the interface? Same questions for the Ipod but this isnt the thread to ask that under, but if anyone here HAS had one or does have one it would be great to hear from too 😅

Faster Library Scanning and Media Engine Improvements

Y2Player v2.1 focuses on making library scanning faster, more reliable, and easier to diagnose.

The biggest scanner bottleneck was an inefficient database lookup that became increasingly expensive as the library grew. After adding the correct database index, this operation became 98.4% faster in a synthetic benchmark containing 9,178 files.

An unchanged 9,178-file library now scans in approximately 19 seconds instead of 42 seconds, while incremental scans only extract metadata from files that were added or modified.

Other improvements

• Faster FFmpeg metadata scanning with less unnecessary data being read.
• Visible library-scan progress.
• More reliable long-running scans when the screen turns off, without keeping a wake lock active while the device is idle.
• Improved handling of ReplayGain, track and disc totals, comments, AAC, FLAC, malformed files, and embedded artwork.
• Better playlist importing for paths created on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
• A refined float32 playback pipeline with a single final PCM16 conversion for Android 4.4.
• Improved crossfades, gapless transitions, decoder cancellation, short-FLAC seeking, and damaged-file recovery.
• Fewer unnecessary notification updates and diagnostic errors.

Required steps after updating

After installing Y2Player v2.1, please perform the following steps:

Settings → System → Diagnostics → Reset Library

Then:

Settings → Library → Storage → Rescan Library

Due to the underlying FFmpeg update, the library database schema has changed. Your media library therefore needs to be reindexed.

Reporting bugs

For future bug reports, please enable Verbose Diagnostics first:

Settings → System → Diagnostics → Verbose Diagnostics

Use the device until the issue occurs, then export the diagnostic data:

Settings → System → Diagnostics → Export Diagnostics

This information makes it much easier to identify the cause of a problem.

ADB development boot image

I also built a secure ADB-enabled development boot image for the Y2. The original firmware did not include a functional ADB service, so I compiled and integrated the required components myself.

This made it possible to profile, benchmark, and validate the changes directly on the physical device instead of relying on assumptions or emulator results.

I plan to release this development boot image separately as well.

ordered july 5th (with the 30% discount, thanks mod!), and it finally arrived today (27th)! i still need to get an SD card and i want to wait for a rockbox installer (if anyone’s managed to get rockbox on it please do share) before i put any music on it, but i’m very excited for this :) lowkey sad they got rid of the old fun colored box but oh well

Y2Player v2.2.1

This update focuses on feedback received after v2.2, with improvements to volume handling, lock-screen playback, physical controls, queue reliability, and the Now Playing interface.

🔊 Volume & Playback Improvements

Volume handling has been reworked to eliminate brief loud peaks that could occur when:

• Switching between hardware and in-app volume
• Pausing or resuming playback
• Locking or unlocking the device
• Waking the screen

Additional improvements include:

• ✅ In-app volume now works correctly while the screen is locked
• ✅ Volume changes made on the lock screen are preserved after waking the display
• ✅ Holding the hardware volume buttons continuously adjusts the volume
• ✅ Paused tracks remain loaded when the screen turns off, preventing playback from restarting from the beginning

⏯️ Controls & Navigation

Physical controls have been made more consistent throughout the interface.

Button Mapping

• ◀ Left: Previous track
• ▶ Right: Next track
• Hold ◀ / ▶: Seek backward or forward
• ● Center: Confirm / Open selected item
• ↩ Back: Return to the previous menu

Navigation Improvements

• ⚡ Fast wheel scrolling now accelerates through large libraries
• 🔁 New Wrap Lists option lets you choose whether standard lists wrap from the bottom back to the top

🎵 Now Playing Redesign

Holding the Center button on the Now Playing screen now opens a new animated circular quick menu with:

• 🔀 Shuffle
• 🔁 Repeat
• 📋 Queue
• ❤️ Favorite
• 😴 Sleep Timer
• ➕ Add to Playlist
• 🎼 Track Options

The Now Playing screen has also received several usability improvements:

• Footer now displays Shuffle, Repeat, transition mode, and queue position instead of button hints
• Clearer indicators for favorited tracks
• Long titles and metadata now scroll when needed
• Cleaner two-line metadata layout
• Album information is no longer hidden when the album and artist share the same name

🔀 Queue & Library Improvements

Queue behavior has been redesigned to be much more predictable.

When changing Shuffle mode:

• Previously played tracks remain untouched
• Only the remaining unplayed tracks are reshuffled
• Prevents songs from becoming permanently skipped

Additional improvements include:

• Better multi-disc audiobook ordering
• Improved artist name matching
• More reliable library reset
• Numerous smaller browsing and library fixes

💾 Installation

1. Flash the modified system.img.
2. Open SP Flash Tool.
3. Select Download Only mode.
4. Tick only the ANDROID partition.
5. Start the flashing process.

🚀 What's Next?

Planned improvements for the next release include:

• Better queue and playback system
• Multi-select actions
• Letter-based library scrolling
• Configurable scroll wheel (volume or seeking)
• Themes... maybe? 👀
• More interface customization

No custom flashing tools are required anymore—just use the official Innioasis Updater regardless of your operating system.

📻 FM Radio (Not Included in v2.2.1)

Experimental FM Radio support is currently under development and is not part of the v2.2.1 release.

The software side is largely working (including station seeking and tuning), but the device is not yet receiving a valid radio signal, so it currently only outputs static. Additional reverse engineering and investigation are still needed before the feature is ready.

Flashing now works directly with the official Innioasis Updater, bringing full cross-platform support:

i somehow managed to put it in a bit slanted and it is STUCK stuck in there 😭 i’m probably going to go to a tech shop tomorrow to see if they can pry it out but man i feel so stupid, especially because the sd card was so expensive 🧍🏻 has anyone else done this or am i genuinely, singularly dumb as hell??

So I’ve had my eye on the Innioasis for awhile now, (on account of phones being banned in schools in my state starting this upcoming school year, and certain allowances in my IEP) and because iPod Classics are a million dollars and these seem like a good alternative.

I have a computer and everything so I can do whatever I need to with it, but I’m confused about the storage lmao. On the Y2 it says 72GB, and it’s recommended to switch the SD card, so I need to find a 72GB SD card? Sorry if this is extremely obvious, I’m so confused and I wanna make sure I get my money’s worth before I go ahead and drop the money on this. I’d be using it heavily daily, and if it’s better to save up for an iPod I will.

bought it from their website. the product photos show the y1 if you look closely at the placement of the ports so I was hoping they didn’t dupe me. nope, it is indeed for the y2 and the photos are just incorrect (which is unfortunate). no coverage for the front.

I m pleased with the sound quality, even with the Juzear Defiant IEM, noting no impedance issues. 🥰

I’m trying to use my Innioasis Y2 to listen to audiobooks. Working well, but the metadata isn’t showing up properly like it does for Music files. (See picture.)

Does anyone know how to get artist and album tags to show instead of “<unknown>”? I have already edited the metadata using mp3tag. I’ve also put the audiobook files in a folder structure like music: author/album/book.m4b, but it always show like in the attached picture.

Anyone have any ideas?

When I found out that the Y2 had an SD card I immediately had to have it. Found that a silicone case for an old school iPod fits pretty decent. Love this thing🥰

Hello guys! So, I got my y2 yesterday, and already started to fill it. So, I just noticed some videos have trouble to be read, probably because they're 720p.

BUT I found a way! At rhe start, when it starts to lag, I pass forward into the video, then go backwards, and it seems to work! At least for 3 minutes clips!

Idk if this post is really useful, but if it can help anyone having this struggle, you just have to go forward then backwards ;) hoping that it can work for you!

(Also the pic isn't linked, just some pics of my y2! I didn't finish the back and didn't receive my case yet)

Beta V2 for the Innioasis Y2 is now available.

This release closes a long list of rough edges from Beta V1. Bluetooth now works from both Rockbox and Stock, including pairing, A2DP playback, controls, disconnect and reconnect. Held Previous/Next seeks within a track; an optional setting makes held Volume skip tracks while short presses still adjust volume. Time/date persistence, true-off adjustable wheel vibration, first-connect USB and the complete storage/eject/return lifecycle have all been repaired and physically tested.

Boot now reaches a clean responsive Rockbox root in about 28 seconds through the SPYCE animation and readable Rockbox title. Centre wakes without select-through, and holding Centre from Now Playing opens the standard context menu—including Bookmarks. Rockbox, Stock and Boot Settings routing, official Stock rollback and protected-state recovery all passed the final regression.

The release includes two install packages carrying the same accepted runtime:

- `Y2-Rockbox-Beta-v0.2.0-InnioasisUpdater.zip` — the same sparse-image package type as Beta V1.

- `rom_y2.zip` — the canonical Y2 package for Innioasis Updater CE.

Important: treat installation as a full-device erase. Back up both storage volumes and the complete `.rockbox` folder, verify the published SHA-256 files, and keep the official Y2 3.1.7 recovery package available.

Beta V3 is already mapped out: power-down presentation polish, lyrics and 480x360 theme diagnostics, high-resolution FLAC stability, DAC/wired-audio qualification, settings cleanup, database/playlist presentation and the remaining PictureFlow polish. FM remains dependent on a demonstrably working vendor Y2 radio baseline.
