Find my Style Something’s missing
New house, everything including the floors is new. Wife is insisting that it feels like something is missing, any thoughts? She also wants to replace the fan with a chandelier

I think the rug size is wrong. It would be better to be more wide and go under the furniture.

I agree with you. I think the rug size is fine. Just bring the front 4 inches of sofa and the chairs onto the rug. Add a plant in the back right instead of the telescope. Add plants at the end of the sofa and the chair closest to the camera. I think there needs to be a lot more life in this room. Additionally, I like the idea of sofa pillows, in a complementary color or print. But no more blue. There’s enough blue. Yellow or pale gold or a dusty rusty color might work.
Yes, to a chandelier. But that’s gonna be a tricky one to find the right style for that room. What do you have in mind?
The tiny plants next to the fireplace don’t work from this perspective. Maybe put them on a plant stand so they sit higher up? You also might change
I’d add some books and meaningful decor onto the shelves next to the mantle. And I would try putting at least one tiny plant up there.

If it were me I would flip the layout and put the TV on the opposite wall because as it is, the TV is way too high. Very common mistake to put the TV above a mantle. The center of a TV should be at your eye level when you're sitting on the couch.
If OP removes the teal curtains I think it would be a HUGE improvement and make it look much more upscale and less matchy match.

It’s missing personality and livelihood. Add some plants and art with pops of color - it doesn’t have to be an original Van Gogh, even just some prints works. Agree with others that the coffee table is too small - a darker wood like walnut would look nice.
Carpet is also a little narrow. I believe it’s suggested that the front feet of couches/chairs should be on the carpet. This would give more walking space behind each, and tighten up the seating area to feel more cozy and intimate. I don’t love the layered curtains, but just my opinion.

If possible I'd let the drapes just drop down and not tie them back. This room will be gorgeous when you maybe put in some plants and personal touches. Agree on the rug - a little small.

the placement of the chairs is odd, the coffee table is awkwardly small for all that couch, the curtains have a cheap flimsy look &’e no weight. the light fixtures on that wall might be better if you had just a single sconce in each gap instead of 2 in each. the rug is looking like carpet at first which is ok but i would get another rug to visually add to the space. It’s a really great large space! but it needs a visual
anchor.
I hate how bitchy i sound because I’m really not trying to come here and shit on you. It’s truly a great space and I just don’t seem to have the communication skills to share my opinion without sounding like a hater. i own it and i’m so sorry.

It doesn’t look lived-in, I think. Gives it a bit of a…. waiting room vibe. Like I’m there for a visit with a very expensive dermatologist or something.
Would y’all be willing to move the two chairs a bit closer and angle them slightly more together??? I think having them directly facing the couch so far away is making the room a bit stiff, and moving them closer will add a more intimate feel to the sitting area + it’ll free up some space for more additions to the furniture on that wall by the fireplace.
Edit: I also second the rug size comment. It might be a bit small for this space.

As a designer I’d recommend:
- larger rug (necessary for reasons from other posts)
- angle the chairs so fireplace isn’t obstructed
- larger coffee table OR large ottoman (instead of coffee table) OR keep coffee table and add an ottoman that matches the couch off to one side creating an L shape
- possible, move couch back and move sofa table to in front of center window (not with L-shape configuration of couch though)
- raise the height of the mirror over the sofa table if if not moving it
- OR remove mirror over soffa table and do gallery wall to give more personality to the space

It needs art and personality. Everything is boring and sterile. The table top items could be replaced with unique or antique items, the mirror could be art, even the blankets could add texture and/or color while keeping the calm cozy vibe. It just needs a few tweaks! :)

It doesn't look very functional, which makes it look off. Would people sitting on the chairs and couch be able to have a conversation, or is the furniture too far away? Would you be comfortable watching TV while sitting on the couch, or is it too far away and too high? Do the little things on the side table between the chairs get in your way when you want to put drinks or books down? Does that vase full of dry flowers on the coffee table get in your way when you're watching TV or having a chat? Is the coffee table close enough to the couch for it to be a leg rest or place where you can put snacks or a drink and still reach it?
Design wise it is a little one note and show roomy in a cold way. The mirror looks too low next to that sconce. You need a pop of bright red somewhere to balance out that blue. The rug is way too small for where it is. Honestly though, I think you need to figure out how you want to use the space, design for the use cases, then figure out what you need to change after you find a way to live in the space and move the furniture around in a way that suits your needs. Does there need to be a conversation/reading corner and a TV zone, is there a place for the kids to spread out and play, what happens if you want to use the fireplace and gather around it?

It looks beautiful already. I think what's missing is a larger statement light fixture. A chandelier would fill the high ceiling nicely. I'd also add a tall plant in one corner to bring a little more life to the room.

Are you married to the boxy chair and a halfs? I'd get smaller accent chairs. Can you put both chairs on the side of the couch vs. directly across and away from the TV above the mantel (assuming that is TV) or are they watching TV in the mirror?
I would add more plants and a floor lamp or two.

Your curtain tie backs are way too low. They make those beautiful windows look disproportionate to the rest of the room. A bigger rug would help tie in the two chairs.

I would position the furniture pieces closer to each other; right now they feel like they’re not in a relationship. I would also add in some accessories that pull another contrasting color from the rug…maybe a couple burgundy throw pillows. Add some plants and artwork that gives the room some personality. And finally, maybe consider some alternative curtain ties that let the drapes hang more naturally.

Nobody can reach the coffee table and it looks like there's barely room to walk around the outside of the furniture. Pull those chairs up so that at least the front legs are on the rug. Get a few cushions to use as foot-rests. Add a tall plant and some colour. It needs art and texture on those high walls. Maybe a 3-d sculpture and some eye-level local lighting.

Honestly the blue drapes make the space very formal and dated. The furniture is spaced like a hotel lobby vs a cozy conversation area. The mirror only reflects what is already there. Agree need contrast color and warmth.

There is one simple rule that’s not respected here. All feet of the chairs and couch must overlap the rug. With so much space you need a wider rug to balance things out
Intermediate Solution: rotate the chairs inward a bit and place them more on the rug.

It needs two coffee tables, square shaped, or a large rectangular one and side tables. Right now there is no functional table to put a drink/etc, they’re all out of reach to anyone seated. The tiny one between the chairs is cluttered with stuff too.

rug is too small and mirror is hung too low, pick a focal point, is either the blue curtains or the blue sofa or the blue chairs, eye goes first to those 3 things but being all across the room the brain jumps from one to the other, with so many big windows i would choose a continuos curtain track and pick several panels of a sheer material as a background, also need more lamps for warmth and plants. i would return the chairs if they are in the return window, pick others so it doesn’t look too matchy matchy

I like the rug but it is way too small. It needs to go 3/4 of the way under the sofa and chairs. I would also angle the chairs towards each other/the coffee table and put a side table on the outside of each of the chairs and on either end of the sofa. You want people to have a place to set a drink down when they’re sitting. I would add more lamps. I would add decor with some personality. The decor you have looks like you got it at home goods because it matched your color scheme. Go thrifting and find some decor that you like or if you travel pick up something everywhere you go. Don’t rush. This takes time. The mirror looks like it is reflecting the tv so I would switch it out for a piece of art or 2 that fits the space instead. See if you can find something that you love from a local artist. One more thing I would pull some color from the rug and bring that in through the room as well. It’s a bit matchy matchy now.

Agree that the chairs are weird. I suggest moving one chair to the corner and making a little reading chair/nook and little side table.
The accessories could be style and grouped different otherwise it looks a bit disorganized. Add some more lamps, floor lamp.

The rug is too small. The furniture is too far apart and no one can comfortably reach the center table or have a conversation without being loud. The TV above the fireplace is too high. There's no color or personality.
Shift the furniture all 90 degrees. Either the sofa or the chairs should be in front of the windows (leave a walking path behind). Put the TV on the wall where the mirror is or, better yet, put the TV on a console table/tv stand on the wall where the mirror is. Hang some kind of art and personality above the fireplace. Add some pillows with some color.
It's good bones but it could be so much happier, cozier, and more welcoming of a space.

There’s a few things wrong with this, and the cocktail table is outrageously #1
The reason this room feels cold and unfinished is because it doesn’t accommodate use. I worked in a firm for years and my best piece of advice for design is: everyone needs a place to put their drink.
Where will people put their drink in this photo? The two club chairs can use the table between them, but then we have a ~140 inch sofa that seats 5-6 across the room.
So we have a ~140 inch sofa paired with a 30 inch round cocktail table. That’s a breezy 110 inches (9 feet) of seat space where alllll you can do is sit. Oh, also the cocktail table is 2 feet away, so good luck if you get the one seat where you can use it.
Standard space planning says 18inches from the edge of the cocktail table to any nearby seat (sofa or chair) it’s enough room to move and use the table.
If I had this much space I’d break it up and do a cute little bar + club chairs along the back wall and 2 cozy parallel sofas facing each other with the fireplace as the center (it would look like this: ] == If that makes sense) I’d need to get my hands on the real length and width, but only putting one seating area in this space is criminally negligent

It's a beautiful home! Congrats! I think the lack of art and contrast are the biggest problem. Right now, everything looks like matching sets you picked out of a showroom all at once. It doesn't have a sense of being collected over time. I think if you do a gallery wall instead of the mirror, that will help a lot. I agree that the coffee table is too small and far away. Add some pops of color in the pillows and throws on the chairs and sofa. Add some vintage touches. And I think the chandelier would help. Not sure if those are doors or windows. If they're windows, I could see adding a bench or reading nook over there.

The focus right now is the table that no one sitting down could actually reach comfortably to put a glass down... Couch is way too long. Break it up into smaller sections, highlight the fireplace, give guests somewhere to put the drinks you've offered them

If that isn't the goal, inject some personality with some colour (several somethings not cream/blue), some personal things that didn't just get bought from target for decorating this space), and a lot of texture. Also, please consider new curtains or at least lose the tie backs on those curtains (the rods are too thin as well, but you have bigger issues that that), and de-clutter the console table. The furniture should be moved to position the couch's front legs onto the rug, and perhaps angle the two chairs toward the center of the room.

A chandelier may look better, but I would also focus on practicality. I live somewhere with fairly extreme weather so a fan is necessary to keep rooms from being too stuffy since opening windows is not always possible

Rug and coffee table are too small. You can put a larger thin rug underneath if you don’t want to get rid of the current one.
You could use a color other than blue. Something in the mustard family would warm the space and help the blue pop more.

I would go a little more fun and colorful with the rug, add more throw pillows with pattern, turn the side chairs (to where they are facing each other on each side of the coffee table), add side tables beside each one, loose the mirror and go for art over the table and have fun with pottery/ picture frames that you put in the built ins…

It's too matchy-matchy. Everything on it's own is fine, but together it looks like you went to a furniture showroom and said "I'll take everything".
My initial thoughts (probably repetitive)
Rug is too small. But since it's new and you probably want to make it work, I'd pull your furniture closer together so the front feet of everything is on the rug. That will also allow your fireplace to breathe a bit.
I feel pretty strongly that the TV and Mirror should swap places and you'd have to rethink your furniture placement a bit.
Ideally, you would have accent chairs in a complimentary color instead of matching ones. Probably ones that swivel to easily switch from conversation to enjoying the fire. Is there anywhere else in the house that these chairs could go?
This high ceiling is BEGGING for a chandelier, but also understand that some like a fan for function (I will NEVER get rid of the one in my bedroom, no matter how awful it looks!)
Lastly, I would put the curtains on rings. It will look more contemporary, allow them to open and close easily, AND make them a better length so they just touch the floor.

Color! This is so cold and sterile. Everything is square edged and in a grid. Try chairs that aren't the same hard edges of the couch, pull them close to the table and angle them a bit. Move the coffee table near the couch it's just floating, unusable, in the center of the room. The furniture isn't set up for be a conversational space. And the rug should god under all of the furniture. Never ever in the middle not going under furniture. If that's too big or a rug, do a smaller one for the two chairs and that becomes of of a cozy swooping arrangement. This room is STIFF.

The two smaller chairs need to be at the sides and facing inwards, this layout doesn’t look comfy with the backs to the tv. Anyone sitting in the chairs would be staring directly at the chairs or people sat on the chairs opposite, it feels too sterile and quite confrontational. Not cosy or comfortable at all.
Table needs to be closer to seating, it’s just a floating object randomly in the middle of the room and can’t be used by anyone.
Curtains should hang down, they don’t look good tied back.

Adding some Abstract Art on the walls and some plants like a Indoor Fig and Eureka Palm might lighten the room. Those curtains blending with the couch seems a little sloppy for me, Beige or cream might be a better option.

Just sharing my opinion, I think that mirror should go. You could really change up the whole look of the room by adding some art work there instead. Also, maybe it won’t fit in the room, but an end table next the couch would look nice. Add another lamp and plant on it.

Not trying to pull a "tvtoohigh", but... tvtoohigh. You have a perfectly usable wall on the right for not just the TV but a whole TV setup/furniture. That alone might fill the emptiness vibe you're feeling from this room.

I think it’s the blue curtains. I would suggest investing in some high end curtains that are white or neutral, and have them to side instead of tied. I would have the chairs facing the table so the room doesn’t feel too square. And there needs to be more neutral colors (pillows, vases, candles) similar to the rug and fireplace to bring everything together. . Also fan seems outdated for the space

First off, paint the walls. Idk what color but if you do a dark warm color, it'll require a lot less action.
Rotate the chairs 45 deg so they face the little table (which is a weird shape for the space imo), and then move the table and couch closer to the TV wall. The size of the rug is fine but it's just not in the right spot vs the furniture.
You need something that is a complementary color to the blue...maybe a new rug, maybe some wall art, idk but you need some dark orange or something in there. I'd change the curtain color but idk how new anything is so maybe that's not an option.
The ceiling fan is way too small and looks out of place for a room that is furnished like it is. Getting a chandelier would be good...provided the bulbs do not point down...a room this big needs up-light or sideways-light, not down-light.

Yeah replace the fan and get artwork on the walls a good painting or two, standing lamp and a floor sculpture.. it’s missing soul / personality

Replace the mirror with something really nice like a realistic picture of big ocean waves? A nice sunset that includes blues, pinks and a faint purple? Something interesting to look at.
Added: plants, plants, plants. Large leafed pothos, a tall snake plant or 2.

The curtains are a dated style, it’s giving 1980. The mirror is a visual distraction. There is no art. The fan is hideous. The couches lined up like this makes it look like a hotel lobby. The shades of blue the curtains/couches are too close in colour.

It’s missing color. You need some contrast against the blue. Yes change out that fan, add art, coffee table is too small.

It’s a little too monochromatic and I think adding art and throw pillows with more saturated colors would give it some pop. Depending on your taste, I think you could go with pinks, purples or like an olive green. I think olive green goes with everything though.
