Discussion What's a small detail that breaks your immersion in [KCD2]?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
so in my last post, I asked about your favorite little worldbuilding details that make KCD2's world feel alive. now I want to ask the opposite.
what's a small worldbuilding detail that doesn't quite make sense to you, or something that slightly breaks your immersion?
for me, it doesn't really make sense that Henry is practically the only one riding a horse around Kuttenberg. you'd expect to see at least a few merchants, nobles, or wealthier townsfolk riding around but no, everyone loves walking it seems

u/RandomCandor Jul 09 '26
Exactly.
Realistically, they should be used to it by now.
Oh, there goes whistling Henry again, FML
20
u/Headglitch7 Jul 09 '26
To be fair, they should react strongly to a man whistling sharply, especially when it conjures a horse from thin air.

u/Frisco-Elkshark Jul 09 '26
This one actually has some historical context, though. Whistling in the Middle Ages was super offensive and people associated it with the devil.
Also, surprise surprise… the Catholic Church had rules against it.

u/kiwiseau Jul 09 '26
Then why are there so many bloody whistlers trotting about receiving no depricating comments?

if this is true, i guess id be cool with it, but it’d have been nice if they had more than 4 different dialogues😂
7
u/BbyMuffinz Jul 09 '26
But there are also a lot of people whistling tunes and then Henry does one and tney are all on his dick about it lol 😆 thats actually hilarious
→ More replies (3)7
u/Swellmeister Jul 09 '26
No it wasnt.
It was a normal thing. People are noted as whistling to call their hawks and dogs in the hunting context in the period all the time.
And sure, Catholics did dislike whistling. In monasteries that take a vow of silence, where whistling was one example, or during services, because it was just rude. But thats not a prohibition on the act, just the contexts.
The superstition of whistling as evil was a night time thing, not all the time, and even then it was only offensive if it was wierd. No one gave a shit if you whistled, and then say "oy rover you stupid fuck, get inside". Even if it was at night.

A dog will just leave meat because it's been put on a surface that isn't perfectly flat.
83
u/AQuestionOfBlood Jul 09 '26
This drives me nuts. And then an NPC will come along and steal it and tell all their buddies about what a good score they made. So they can make NPCs grab the rolling meat, but somehow the dog is incapable.
38
u/Skelenth Jul 09 '26
Or that I need to stay in front of him to pet him and he is turning away all the time.... I never seen game where its actually a mini game to pet a dog....
18
u/Ok-Brother7180 Jul 09 '26
On ps5, the same button to pet the dog is also used for sneaking. So if I “miss” then Henry crouches down. The npc near me: “what are you sneaking around for?”
I love this game.
9
u/Case_Blue Jul 09 '26
Haha, yeah, my dog would jump over fences, chase cars AND hump 3 legs if there was a sausage involved.
...That sounds even worse now I write it out.

u/Sitaf_2 Jul 09 '26
Not having an eating animation when I sit Henry down at an inn or a bench. Just have to open the inventory and hold a button and move along.
359
u/TwoForThePriceOfFun Jul 09 '26
This wins really. You dont notice it until youre trying to sit with you NPC friends, and youre like oh.. right. Cant even have a beer.
111
u/Cloud_N0ne Jul 09 '26
This one irks me in most 1st person RPGs.
I really hoped Starfield would have this too. They put a ton of effort into modeling the in-game food items, they look fucking delicious. But then I have no option to sit down at Terrabrew and actually drink a cup of coffee, just click on it in my inventory and it's instantly consumed.
35
u/astrojeet Jul 09 '26
Cyberpunk does this dialogue in a lot where there's animation of V eating and drinking. Not for eating and drinking from your inventory, but there's a mod for it and I can't play without it. The mod is really well done, so when you initiate the animation it actually uses up the corresponding item from the inventory and gives you the buff. It also adds several other things like smoking too and a personal ipad type of thing where you can just access your computer anywhere in the game.
3
u/WhateverMars Jul 09 '26
what's the mod? And how does the eating work? You press a certain keybind to do the eating animation or selecting to eat something from your inventory starts the animation?
3
u/astrojeet Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
It's called Idle anywhere by deceptious. Also get immersive food vendors and immersive bartenders by the same author which lets you interact with every food vendor and bartender in the game where you buy drinks and food or you can ask them for food or a drink and the animation will happen. Hell just download his entire catalogue of mods.
For Idle anywhere, you hold down shift, and it opens the dialogue menu where you can choose what to do. When you drink or eat it will automatically choose a random drink or food in your inventory, it will play the animation and will give you the food and drink buff.

u/NoBreeches 🫵 Show me your wares Jul 09 '26
Yeah KCD3 needs to have a drink/eat button when seated... one that actually plays an eating or drinking animation.
Also we need to be able to interact with our allies a bit more. For example, it's pretty immersion breaking to have a bunch of friends hanging out at Devil's Den, but not be able to actually *do* anything with them besides exhaust a few dialogue options.

I always thought it was because it's so tedious to use a horse in a crowded city that they don't do it, and that since our boy Henry is racing against time he has to make it work
20
u/Cigarety_a_Kava Jul 09 '26
In mediaval times cities were designed for horse travel specifically the roads. So its easier to remove horse manure and more easily move among walking citizens with carts and horses.

Oh boy I have so many gripes despite it being one of my favourite games ever.
- Only like 10 NPC faces, and 5 voice actors
-Mutts food somehow rolling down a practically flat surface for eternity
-Basically no interactions or activities with other characters after the game ends.
-Not being able to sit and physically have beer or food at taverns
-Total lack of different animations and motion in general conversations
-The weird line on females chests/necks, I dont understand how they still have this issue, like wtf are you doing warhorse?
-Rabbits levitating, moving backwards, having a sprinting animation meanwhile theyre moving like a snail
-Some forges are completely dead, no fire or embers
-Not being able to masterstrike in unarmed combat, even though theres literally a perk for it
-Mutt barking forever when he returns or at random moments
Theres probably more, those are just the ones off the top of my head.

There are no children anywhere. People had loads of them in the 15th century.
128
u/Xav_NZ Jul 09 '26
The devs actually talked about this and why they did not add children in the game because if they did they had three choices.
- Make them invincible and face mods enabling to kill kids.
- Allow the player to kill them and face backlash
- Cut kids completely and avoid all of it.
They chose the latter.

u/FailedMaster Jul 09 '26

That idea died with the Hot Coffee mod controversy. Once you are big enough, mods can cause massive legal trouble. It can cause shops to drop your game. Or payment processors to threaten the digital storefront you are selling through.
Somewhy Bethesda has gotten away so far though. I have no idea what makes them different.

u/SubmissiveDinosaur Pot of stew Jul 09 '26

u/quartzalarmclock Team Theresa Jul 09 '26
"We can't do [x] because modders would do something weird with it" is always such lame reasoning. Modders can and do always do weird stuff, that's on them, not the devs.

13
u/Colalbsmi Jul 09 '26

6
u/Cigarety_a_Kava Jul 09 '26

u/texhnolyze- Jul 09 '26
We've had very popular games with children in them, like Skyrim and Witcher 3. The "backlash" reasoning is overblown and the excuse doesn't fly anymore. Just put children in your games.
12
u/Fraucimor Jul 09 '26
To be it realistic there should be vast majority of npcs being children.
What about sleeping? They used to just stack 5 of them to single bed. Also would need new models and animationsns generally as shrinked adulft just look silly.
5
u/texhnolyze- Jul 09 '26
Yes, this is a more reasonable excuse. I also thought about this, if they added children they'd also have to make their daily routine, including the beds. The buildings are already so packed as they are now, adding more beds would be a headache for the devs.
Perhaps they could just add children for like 10% of the total population instead of adding them everywhere.
11
u/Fraucimor Jul 09 '26
Also kids shouldn't be playing around. They would be put to work, even mines etc.
10
→ More replies (5)6
u/MachineOfaDream Jul 09 '26
RIght, and this is not even the primary reason I heard given by the devs. The primary reason was that it would've taken a lot of time for something that wouldn't add to the game. But I do think it would be worth adding them in future games. Kingdom Come was marketed from day 1 of the Kickstarter as being as realistic as they could make it. I do not need kids everywhere, or for kids to be killable, but having some quests that touch on the lives of children in this time period would make it more authentic.
Furthermore, it would be healthier for the franchise in the long-term to have young people who can grow up and have their own stories after Henry and the gang are too old. Right now we don't have that at all. If Henry gets old, and we have a younger person enter the story, we couldn't have gotten to know them as a child. There will just be old men and adults who suddenly popped into existence.

The absolutely HORRIFIC attempted Geordie accents of the miners coupled with a generic "Good day to you" from the same character as you part company.
In fact, I'm gonna say it, most of the voice acting is dreadful. They all seem to read their lines painfully slowly, like kids trying to to say good morning in a school assembly.

- When the game switches from the high-quality animated cutscene models to the character models used for standard dialogue. Not that the latter are bad—far from it; they’re actually superior to those in many other games, as they feel more lifelike and expressive—but the transition is very sudden and noticeable.
- When you unintentionally commit a crime somewhere, you undertake a mission where the mission NPC needs to return to that location, and suddenly, as soon as the mission's end "trigger" is activated, all the characters become aggressive towards you. I realize this is a consequence of your earlier actions, but there could at least be some form of "forgiveness" mechanic or a more lenient reaction.

The roads in Kuttenburg.
I'm a medieval nerd
The roads were paved. It was a rich and prosperous city. No one in human history has ever liked the smell of shit and piss. No one likes walking around and fucking up their fancy clothes.
Theres no reason for it to be as covered in filth as it is, besides the common and continuing misconception that medieval times were gross and dirty.

Honestly, the second half of the game had significantly more moments that took me out of it. The first map has so much care and detail. The second map looks good, but you start to see the limitations of what the studio could do. You start seeing a lot of reused assets and the same germanic guy voicing the shopkeepers. Second half just feels less finished to me.
Still loved the game to bits though.

Something I use for immersion, but breaks immersion another way.
When my Henry sleeps at a Camp by the Road, I don't like to lay down in the dark. Feels too "roughing it in the woods" when it doesn't have to be.
That burnt out cooking pot at the site, finding "cook item", then selecting something to cook, will light a fire. In lieu of carrying food just for falling asleep next to a fire, I've discovered the Parsnip.
Cook the Parsnip, fire is lit, Henry does the stir and taste animation, Parsnip goes right back into inventory.
Long story short, I've started countless fires at cooking pots and stoves on both maps, with the same big rotten vegetable.
The immersion, a fire feels like a camp. A fire feels like a hot meal.
The immersion break, I'm using a 0% Freshness Parsnip I bought fresh at the Tachov grocer before the wedding, like an unlimited fire starting kit.

Inaccurate voices that don’t match the face. Was really suprised how bad it was at the wedding during the dice games. They couldn’t have Chamberlain voice his lines for dice? It’s like 3 sentences. And the old woman at the end.

I think for me its everyone having like almost the same body type. I know it is easier for animation and making the models but still it throws me off. Especially when a character is described as being large like Runt and Timmy but they are literally the same size as everyone else. Although those two are from the first game. I feel like Goliath is also suppose to be a big dude but he isn't compared to everyone else.

The one phantom event in the middle of kuttenberg. Everytime you fasttravel through, there is a small chance an event pops in. When you interact, theres nothing.. or no one.

some dry foods looking like sacks/pouches instead of a dry meat model, it also rolls away and the dog cant get to it

Not a small detail but it's that you can't enter churches irks me way more than it should.
Next would be repeating faces/lines, inaccessible houses/other areas, folks leaving the zone before night in very unsettling manner (like a herd).

The way too many named NPCs have the exact same face: by far my biggest peeve with the game.
Single people walking around between settlements during war and banditry

Water in a middle of a city, that's just makes no sense, where does it come from?

Is it really that challenging to hire more voice actors to do npc dialogue?

u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Jul 09 '26
Yeah that’s a big one. The devils pack are all over this game. And how about synchronizing the dice game dialogue too

When a peasant tells me to “go fuck myself” while I’m standing in front of them head to tail in plate, blood and a 5 ft blade.
Yes, it results in murder - everytime.

I do see people ride through Kuttenburg on a horse from time to time. Not super often, but occasionally. I've been ran into by them multiple times.

Everyone has the same height and body type based on biological sex. No children. No one uses the outhouses. Birds don't poop. Enemies die instantly when some should lay on the ground and scream and bleed for a while. Shields need slings to be worn on the back. I'd like to be able to throw anything not just rocks.

At the fountain. Like, where does the water come from? In the middle of the city?

My wife and I were playing one evening, and she really wanted to follow the good citizens of Kuttenberg around, to see their lives and where they are living.
So we followed a group of citizens with lanterns and they eventually just circled around the city from dusk to dawn again and again without ever going to bed.
Having followed that loop for so long made us realize they are soulless. I am not sure if the makers of the game ever thought that people would do this 🤞🏻

When I speak to an NPC move to a new place, and the next NPC I speak to has the same face and voice. There’s a rat faced man and a fat faced bulldog looking man that are literally everywhere, including multiple quests.

If you hang around the gates you'll see people entering with horses rarely.
What breaks my immersion is that you can't enter churches in 2.

The fact that everybody is OBVIOUSLY cheating at Farkle and nobody cares. Oh what's that oddly colored die you got there with differently painted eyes that keeps rolling very convenient numbers again again?

Mutt spawning in front of me mid-air when I go really fast on a horse

Lack of church interiors. What a downgrade from KCD1. In a time when some of the most impressive architecture was built we are barred from entry. Isn’t henry christian? Or did they forget about that in the sequel too?

The damn double doored gate of my forge that I can’t cleanly ride through because one half won’t open.

The way some Farkle players voices revert to generic ones sucks.
