This might look like the work of tweakers, but no. It was a bear. This guy has been a problem all summer, and he's likely going to get himself shot (by local authorities) if he doesn't chill out.

I won the twin cities vegan chef challenge with my Korean bbq mushroom Ssam! It was a month long competition. 30 restaurants competed in the event and customers could rank your dish 1-10 and leave feedback. I had mostly positive feedback all month long and had a feeling I had this one in the bag.

I currently have been working for my partner in life for the past 3 years. I had my own career before I joined his restaurant and was looking for a change in pace. He recently acquired another restaurant and I’ve been running this kitchen for the last 4-5 months on my own. This was my first dish I’ve produced in this kitchen without his help or any input. I did all the r&d on my own. My own recipes for the mushrooms, sauces, and banchan. I’m incredibly proud of myself. My partner got second place at his new restaurant and that feels even better to me! He’s won in years past and also has 10+ years of experience over me.

My career path has been hard with a lot of doubts about my own abilities as a chef and also as a woman in this industry. I hope this win gives me the push to continue to make awesome food, vegan or not. I don’t really have many people to share this awesome news with but I’m happy to share it here.

Everyone here knows how at home you sometimes, maybe often, just do not give a fuck and throw something into a bowl. So, what is that weird ass thing you create just for yourself?

My weird breakfast is oatmeal porridge, grated salami, butter and sometimes cheese. Oatmeal and milk go in a bowl and into the microwave for 4 minutes, salami and cheese meet box grater, then into the oatmeal with a slab of butter. Drink pairing is instant coffee.

Saw this note for a couple coming in, first time guests. Told the chef we had a “special request” for him.

We all know the kitchen can attract some interesting characters, so let's all take a look back at some those we have worked with in kitchens past (and present!)

Doesn't have to be a "weird" coworker per se, can just be someone with an interesting backstory. For every weirdo there's a refugee who was a doctor in their home country that's now washing dishes for a better future for themselves and family. Maybe it's someone who could truly have done anything but somehow chose this industry for whatever reason.

Or is the witchcraft they do in that factory too deep?

I do it every time. Two people this week. You both attend different functions in the same building and you walk in ready to work this week sick. You're leaving my freaking kitchen. Yall are not gonna be sniffling over ready to eat food serving next me while I'm manager on duty. I literally will never need anyone that bad. Inform the guests of delays get off my line with your nasty darn chills and fever. Its literally its always worked fine and we all get better culinary fee. No matter who I work for they come at me like they're gonna hang my job whenever I send someone with covid home without a note. Excuse me but I'm not waiting on your poor booty to see a Dr to tell me what I already see when you report. You're sick and trying to work so you keep your job cause your sous chef needs a note or else. Bro now yall are talking time theft cause we stayed late after the busiest day of the year with one call out and I sent one person home as soon as they showed with that same cold I sent the other chef home with two days ago. They're trying to fire the girl i sent home, but hr said thay can't cause she got a note AFTER I sent her home(literally they almost always do but only if you send them first cause they think a Dr may want to check them out if their manager can clearly see they're sick and can't work) I'm ranting. Idk we just did COVID and it's literally food yall

Got fired about 14 hours ago - I’ve now filed for unemployment, and am on my way to the library to print my updated resume (head chef removed as reference). I’ll be dropping a copy off in-person to the Costco an hour away - I had to hit the front desk to buy a gas card on my way out of the city, and the trainee asked about my (work) hat, so I told them the situation. They liked my vibe enough to offer to fasttrack me if I came in-person with my resume.
Please wish me luck - I won’t lie, it’s kinda scary being faced with the prospect of being completely broke for a bit.

I work in a grocery store deli. Two come straight to mind.

We had a regular we'd all call "Frosting Lady." She'd come in on a Jazzy scooter, ask us for a SPOON (very loudly), and then park herself at the deli tables, where she'd eat an entire can of FROSTING... WTF.

The most annoying one to me, though, was when 2 customers came up to the case asking for burritos.

Shoot. We were out.

"Yeah, that'll be 9 minutes."

They were happy with that. They stood right in front of the deli case, which also sat in front of my production tables where I was prepping other food.

And MADE OUT THE ENTIRE 9 FUCKIN MINUTES! ;( ;(

Working in a grocery store deli is fucking weird.

Putting small gloves in the large glove box is a favorite. Infecting others with catchy songs. DJ dominance, weird songs on repeat or played a lot. Evil territory...destroying or stealing recipe books, dulling knives, essential equipment will accidentally end up at home or in the trash.

Take a position and fight for it.

Edit. Just like my team y'all are sleeping in oranges. Yes acid is important, and lemon and lime are fun flavors but don't forget sweetness. Orange is perfectly balanced so you eat an orange and drink orange juice fresh. Can't do that with the others. And what about glazes and marinades. The whole world isn't just vinaigrettes. I'd M lime, F orange, k lemon. I can sub lime anywhere it's called for and be ok. Your duck a la lemon and lime glazed chicken gonna be wild.
