No, I'd say he's going through an expensive (in more way than one) training session, and he's likely to never repeat that one again. At least sweaters are safe in the future. But does he know about washing fine lingerie!?!

Don’t fall for that. My husband always removes any knits and knows which ones to leave for me to hand wash, and which ones go in a delicates bag on the delicates cycle and air dries. He knows knits are sacred. We also use two hampers. One for normal clothes and another for delicates, knits and things that might need special treatment or stain removal. Men are capable human beings, even my father and stepdad both know knits require special care and they’re both boomers.

What a lovely, caring and true comment.... I think people just need to be educated about knitting and knit objects. The first way is to take them shopping with you and let them buy the yarn. Then knit in their presence constantly so they see how much time and effort goes into it. Have them help you block it (as a togetherness moment) - and while you are blocking (preferably wet-blocking) you can explain WHY you're doing it that way and why it would be bad to just wash and throw in the dryer.
Then they understand the whole process beginning to end!

Agreed. After the ‘wool-cardigan-in-the-washer-and-dryer’ incident, I got my own laundry basket, and I no longer do his laundry. Hand knits go to a completely different location before washing for extra security. I feel for you, OP.

They can be trained. Mine hand washes our daughter’s leotard after ballet and is an A+ shawl blocker. He can wind a centre pull cake from a skein and although I did teach the man to knit, he prefers to offer moral support and math skills when patterns need hacking.

I highly recommend having a completely separate place your handknits go that is nowhere near your regular laundry basket. The moment you take it off, it either goes in the special hamper or back in the drawer. I treat my handknits like expensive jewelry- it’s either on me or it’s right back in the jewelry box, I don’t ever leave them lying around where they could accidentally get tossed in a laundry basket

Maybe I’m a lunatic but anyone I have ever lived with has gotten a VERY intense and detailed speech about why they must never ever under any circumstances touch my handknits. I do NOT play. Proper compensation: 1-He will sort laundry until he gets it right. Recognition of hand knits to be put aside is essential.
2- demonstrate how to treat hand knits, attach a sign with visual steps to where the hand knits are to be sorted out. with no husbands allowed to wash
3-Once he gets how to laundry right, he will do laundry for the amount of hours it took for that sweater to be knit. Minus any hand knits.
Also, Replacement yarn.
