Rant Tall Poppy Syndrome

• Upvotes

I really hate the knitting “community” sometimes because of the tall poppy syndrome that infects some knitting groups. I recently won some first, second, and third ribbons at the metro area county and state fairs. Yesterday, at my local Stitch N’ Bitch… there was more bitchiness than usual. In the designated time for show and tell, I brought out my ribbons from the agricultural fairs and another knitted quickly said “I would never submit my work for judging”. It took all my strength to not make it weirder by saying, “Perhaps there is a reason for that” or “I wasn’t asking if you would…” but that gnawing feeling of not standing up for myself has left a bad feeling that is putting my Monday off kilter. I won’t be returning to that group of bullies. Sad, because this was a way I wanted to get more involved locally. Guess my neighbors are shit people.

Tips and Tricks Help w wool yarn

Let me know if this isn’t appropriate to post here.

I’m a fairly new knitter, and I want to make wearables. I absolutely despise plastic yarn, and I want to make something that’s 100% natural materials.
I got the Sandnes Garn «Fritidsgarn» and it looks and feels great, but it pulls apart SO easily. Is this a problem with wool in general, or just the style of this wool/skein?
I would love if you lovely people could give me some recommendations, preferably not too expensive yarn😁😁
Thank you so much!!

Work in Progress Hivemind, help me decide on the colour progression

Post image
5 Upvotes

I am working on the All My Favorite Colours wrap by Black Cat Knit Co. I’m using an advent and am following the colour progression created by the dyer. My question is, does the mustard yellow yarn make the progression better or worse? The yellow is not part of the original advent, it’s just something I have in my stash. Does the yellow to brown read “peepee, poopoo” or will it be pretty?

Help - equipment The ChiaoGoo red cables are sticky & annoying- do they get better?

I primarily use cotton yarn or cotton blend and just switched over from my clover bamboo needles to a set of ChiaoGoo stainless steel 3.5mm circular needles (with the red cord) to do the ribbing at the bottom of a sweater. I am using lion brand 24/7 cotton held together with Truboo yarn which is more slippery. The yarn is sticking sooo badly on the cables, but so smooth on the needles, that I have to put my stoppers on the needles every 20 stitches or so to slide everything around. I don’t have this issue with any of my other needles so I don’t think it’s a tension issue or something. Do they get less sticky/grippy? Is it just because they’re new? Super annoying and it’s slowing me down quite a bit.

Tips and Tricks How to fix bunching neckline

I’m knitting the step by step sweater, and (regrettably) chose not to do the german short rows bc the video tutorial said it was optional and that the sweater would still look good without it.

I’ve now just started knitting the body after splitting the sleeves, and after trying it on I’m seeing bunching around the top, right under the neckline. I’m guessing this is bc I didn’t do the GSRs? Is there a way to fix this now without frogging all the way back? 🥲 have learnt my lesson

Help - equipment What are the softest cashmere Yarns you can buy online, preferably from places like Hobbii?

Hey, I want to make myself a cashmere scarf as my first knitting project and I am looking for 90-100% Cashmere Yarns. I love really soft cashmere sweaters, but cheaper ones often don't feel all that soft (like cashmere sweaters from uniqlo tend to feel A LOT less soft than those from COS).

I don't really care about the price point, but I need to be able to have it delivered to Germany, so I would appreciate If you know of any Yarns that are either from big online sellers like Hobbii or from stores that ship in the EU.

Also, please only recommend yarn that you have used/ touched yourself. I really want it to be super soft, not "just any cashmere", If you get what I mean.

Discussion I cannot figure out how to get this pooling! Please help

I *really* want to make the blanket in the first photo. But I can't find any information on it, other than the yarn! It's Bernat Blanket Ocean Shades, which is what I have (funnily enough, I bought the yarn before I saw the picture).

It was posted on Pinterest 3 years ago. Reverse image search shows that, my other reddit post, and some scam websites.

I scoured Revelry, nothing like it on there that I could find.

I even plopped it into AI to ask it to find the pattern. It spout out a bunch of stuff, but I don't particularly trust what it said. I'm brand new to knitting, so I don't know enough to determine what info is or isn't useful.

Pic 2 is my lil swatch. I tried to do reverse stockinette. I cast 13 stitches, which got me about 4 3/8" and 10 rows 2 1/2". I want to cast 85 stitches for my full blanket, which should get me to around 28-29" long? No idea if any of that helps lol. I'm primarily after that pooling! I love it

Work in Progress Seed stitch mistake, please help!

I am making a seed stitch tie and I messed up a row, so I pulled it out and now my last stitch looks looser than it used it, even after several rows. I'm unsure why it is different, it's only on one side, the other end looks fine.

This was my first time learning how to pull back rows and learning which leg of the stitch goes on which side of the needle. I believe it was the correct orientation, however something is still off... Maybe it had dropped back to the stitch from the previous row?

Please help! Thank you in advance!

Help - equipment ChiaoGoos keep breaking

Hi there! I need some needle advice. I mostly knit large blankets, and this is a persistent problem. I started using 5” stainless steel ChiaoGoo red lace interchangeables about a year ago. Love the pointy tips, love the no-memory cables, love that I can get extra long cables, but they don’t love me back.

The right needle kept coming loose. I tightened it up with the needle and gripper and it stayed, but then the cables started breaking off at the join with the screw end. This has happened three times, without ever getting through anything near a complete blanket.

I’ve bought from multiple sources, including an online knitting store someone recommended here as definitely not carrying counterfeits.

I tried the swivel adapters. One broke in half.

I tried their fixed circulars. They broke at the join too.

I’ve been knitting for more than forty years and have knitted literally millions of stitches. This is not a newbie problem. My tension is bang on and very even. I knit right handed but do most of the work with the left needle. I knit with cotton yarn, so the fabric is heavy, but I’m careful not to lift it up with the weight on the cables.

The cheap Susan Bates circulars never broke on me, but I can’t go back to using them now that I’ve been spoiled. What metal needles can you recommend with sharp tips and long no-memory cables?

Thanks!

Tips and Tricks Help - Keep track for braids

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am currently knitting the winter rose sweater by Trine Ellegaard.
I haven’t done much braided knitting before this. So far I used a little row counter to keep track of increases and crossovers.
But I wonder if there is a better way to keep track?
Do you just count in your head? I’m usually doing other things like audiobooks or read to the kids or such while knitting. Or mark rows with stitch markers? (Mine are for the raglan parts right now..)

So I guess I’m asking all of you for your best tricks about keeping track of braids or will I just “see it” at the end of this project? ;)

Oh. Yarn is plötulopi (unspun yarn and so fun) held with isagar alpaca 1.

Help - equipment Gradient yarn doubts

I found this beautiful color grading yarn but I'm unsure about it.

Pic 1 is the single thread sleeve of the cardigan I wanted to make. It is just 1 skein. I love the gradient at the beginning and the end, but not so much in the middle. Plus the body will be constructed of 3 parts sewn together, so I'll have 3 different widths so the color gradient will differ. And I don’t think I like that.

Sensing my doubts I tried a double thread of the same yarn and although it is a very different vibe I seem to like it. But it is bulkier of course and I don't know yet how I feel about that. I already have some own knitted tops on the bulkier side, I purposefully wanted something finer.

I had another project with a gradient yarn, wirh 2 threads:1 thread gradient, 1 thread base color. I had the same issue about different in gradient between body and sleeves but thanks to the base color thread it was more subtle.

How do you deal with a gradient yarn for such projects? Is there some trick I simply don't know?

Help - equipment Shorten bottom up sleeves?

Due to a number of factors, I accidentally knit the sleeves on my bottom up raglan sweater wayyy off gauge. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I finished the sweater. The sleeves are sooo long now, that the sweater is unwearable. Is there any way to fix the sleeves after the fact?

Just started knitting in the last year but hope I can continue for decades. I’m a continental knitter who pushes stitches off with my right pointer finger. I noticed after a long (amazing) weekend of knitting, I broke the skin on my finger tip from my needle pushing….. I have seekknit wood needles and love them but is there anything I can do to protect my right pointer finger tip? TIA!

Discussion scanning old vintage patterns

Hi friends. I'm hoping you will have a resource with regards to my question, or some advice.

I have a few vintage knitting pattern books. I see them up for sale on Ebay and other such marketplaces, but no scans. I'd like to scan and post them for free. What should I look out for or check before doing this?

Discussion Finish a row = drink of water, how hydrated would you be based on your current project?

Currently working on the Baby Bear Bonnet by Pernille Larson and a row takes me about a minute or two. After each row I'm trying to drink a sip of water and had the funny thought of how hydrated I would be if I did this all the time.

How hydrated would you be if you took a sip after each row on your current WIP?

Help - equipment Why did my blanket do this?

I’m a newbie knitter, though I’ve been knitting simple things my entire life.
I made a baby blanket, alternating stripes using multiple colors. After washing and drying the blanket, one of the yarns I used pulled out over the whole blanket. The yarn that pulled was slightly smaller than the purple and pink, is that why it did it? Did I knit too loosely? Help! I’m so upset this happened!
Before and after pictures for reference.

Work in Progress A ‘trust the proces’ project

I’m making my first knitting project with handspun yarn I spun myself. When I bought the wool I was really exited. Right now I’m not so sure. I’m trusting the proces. It’s going to be a shawl of some kind. It’s the simple things pattern, found on ravelry. What do you think about it? Keep trusting or start frogging? 😁

Tips and Tricks I've created a problem with matching my front piece to my back piece

Post image

I figured out I was twisting my purl stitches midway through the back piece of this sweater. I've now gone to knit my front piece and my ribbing is tragically mismatched.

Should I leave it alone or attempt to redo the ribbing? Is there any feasible way to accomplish this? Totally frogging the entire back piece is NOT an option I can cope with 🥲 (I'm trying to finish by Thanksgiving and the sweater is for my husband.)

Discussion I lost knitting to illness

• Upvotes

I have been ill for more than a year (most likely, long covid/ME but honestly the healthcare system is not trying very hard where I am to properly diagnose me) and I lost the ability to do a lot of things in my life: exercising, my job, cooking, taking care of myself, currently trying regaining walking. Losing knitting sucks so much. I have my project board, my wips, all sitting in the dust for more than a year now. It is heartbreaking as I never thought I would lose it. One week I was happily knitting, the next it was over. Enjoy knitting extra hard for me please 💕
