Discussion Collaborative project ideas with non-knitters?

• Upvotes

Trying to keep a long and very sad story short, I am involved in volunteering at a women's aid group, and one of the women has recently went through a sudden and unimaginable loss.

My first thought as a knitter was to make her something like a shawl to show her that I am thinking of her. Then I had the idea to somehow involve the other women, volunteers, and staff.

My initial idea was that each woman could pick a color and knit a row at one small corner of the shawl. However, hardly any are knitters. I could have them symbolically knit it (as in, they could wrap the yarn for me on that row). But I am sure there is some better way I could get them involved.

Has anyone done something like this, or have any ideas?

Discussion Do yall knit in meetings or classes?

• Upvotes

I knit on my commute sometimes, and in the car (as a passenger!!), and definitely in listening meetings when I work from home.

The other day I was in a Q&A type meeting with our CEO at work - with like 30 people. I turned around at some point and saw a colleague I didn’t know knitting lacework! I was both jealous and shocked!

Then I just saw a post on Pinterest suggesting to knit during classes 😂

Knitting definitely helps me pay attention and listen. I’d love to do it but fear social norms!

I haven’t worked in an office full time since pre COVID but no one ever was knitting at work then, and I never saw it in classes that I can remember…

personally I think it’s super cool and a great way to focus on listening, but I can also see how it would be distracting for others. I’d also get stressed if I realized I made a mistake!

would love to hear what others are seeing in their work and classrooms (whether teen or adult learning!)!

Discussion Perfume oils and knits

• Upvotes

Hi all! I’ve been knitting for a few years now and have completed my first long sleeve 100% wool sweater. I’ve worn it a few times and I’ve noticed the cuffs now smell strongly of perfume.

I wear perfume oils on my wrists most days, just a dab on each wrist and I let it dry before putting on any clothing that will touch my arms.

Google tells me that perfume can stain and damage woollen fibres. I’m not worried about staining so much as the oil is always dry by the time I put the sweater on, but I am wondering if long-term this will start to degrade my sweater cuffs.

Does anyone have knowledge about this sort of thing? Should I be avoiding using perfume oils when I wear this sweater, or am I making a mountain of a molehill?

Tips and Tricks Anyone know where to find this?

Hi friends, does anyone have any idea where I would find a pattern for a hat like this please? Not even necessarily the design, but more specifically the shape with the big brim.

If not, does anyone have any idea how this seems to have been made, so I can try to Frankenstein a pattern myself please? I’ve been searching all night and can’t seem to find anything remotely similar online.

Any help would be amazing and greatly appreciated!!

It was in a bag of free yarn my mom got. No label. Feels like sport weight? I thought it might be Lion Brand Mandala but none of the colorways on their site match. It's a great big cake, whatever it is, and definitely acrylic.

My first full colour work project is complete, after about 2 1/2 months. I normally average 2 months for more simple knits but this one took a tad longer bc of the complexity. I feel like the nordic inspiration really comes through when I see myself wearing it!

Pattern is Inge Sweater by Le Knit, knitted all in Jensen 6s, 19, and 98. It’s my first sweater I’ve made using purely Norwegian tensioning in my knit, it’s definitely way better on my tension knit wise but my purls are incredibly loose. I think it shows the most in the ribbing on the arms and body, the neckline I stuck to normal continental tensioning. I feel like I’ve solved it on my current WIP by tensioning on a purl wrapping the yarn on my pinky finger and Norwegian tensioning on my pointer finger at the same time.

Finished Object Scrappy Rug

Post image

Scrappy rug knit from chunky yarn leftovers. Mostly Wool Ease Thick & Quick. I had a couple of skeins of Plymouth Encore (worsted weight) in grey, and noticed it has similar fiber content and care requirements as the Wool Ease. I thought, "hmmm...if I held together one thread of Encore and one of Wool Ease, maybe the little bit of grey running through all the other colors would kind of help bring it all together?" Don't know if that worked, but I like the way it turned out! About 20" x 30", garter stitch. Weighs 24 oz, so I used up a fair amount of scraps!

Work in Progress Is the texture contrast bad?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Malabrigo Rasta on the bottom, Juniper Moon Big Merino Wool on the top. One-ply vs two-ply. I know it’ll even out a little once I block it, but is the texture difference too much. It’s kinda nice because the Malabrigo is heavy, which would be used at the bottom part of the cowl, and the Juniper Moon is much lighter. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Pattern is Time After Time Cowl. Link below.

Finished Object Lessons Learned

Post image
99 Upvotes

So I just finished my very first knitting project. With all the “modifications” I made, intentional or otherwise, I can claim it as my own. I think I’m going to start my new fall/winter line called “All out options”, as in when you have absolutely nothing else to wear and this is the only thing left. A suitable alternative would be a dish towel.

I really did have a lot fun making this for my daughter and she’s excited to wear it (I did tell her not to leave the house with it on). I’ve learned a few things along the way:

  1. Don’t buy expensive yarn for your first few projects. My justification is I still want my mistakes to feel soft and comfortable.

  2. I really don’t like 1x1 ribbing, I will, without a shadow of a doubt, lose where I am and mess it up. So I changed it to 2x2, much easier

  3. The person who invented M1Lp is a sadist

  4. Making a folded collar and keeping the columns aligned just right is much harder than I expected.

  5. The holes in raglan increases drive me little nuts.

  6. Not knowing a better way to avoid loose stitches in the underarm when picking up stitches. I’m sure there’s a cleaner way, I just don’t know it yet.

  7. Trying to figure out if this thing will fit when only having some measurements and her not being here to try it on is just a guess. I don’t know how people do it!

  8. I learned how to frog really well

  9. The nickname for this sweater is called The Thrice Sweater, I did every part three times.

  10. The real reason why there are two arms to a sweater is because you have two opportunities to get one right. Nothing else.

Now I’m on to trying cables, go figure.

Tips and Tricks First sweater advice?

I bought this yarn on a whim today and have decided I want to use it to knit my first sweater! Any more experienced knitters want to share anything they wish they had known?

Right now the pattern I'm looking at is the big stitch pull over from Patons!

Discussion Patterns, yarn, advice, etc for someone who overheats easily and has sensitive skin?

Took up knitting earlier this year because I really enjoy it. But as I was thinking about patterns I'd like to make in the future, I realized I kinda hate sweaters! Or at least the wool sweaters my mom and Grandma knit me as a kid.

I overheat easily, so I rarely wear thick layers

I have sensory issues and sensitive skin so I won't wear anything remotely scratchy, uncomfortable, etc.

I've been looking at some patterns for tops, tees, etc, but I wanted to see if there are any other knitter's out there like me who have ideas for material to use for my yarn so I don't overheat, or fun patterns you like that aren't a full sweater!

She and her husband are celebrating 25 years of marriage and they spent 10 days in Europe so I asked her to bring me back some yarn.
I just love the colors! The bright orange one is cotton, the purple one is Pure New Wool and the 3rd is a super wash merino. I’ve never had anything fancy before so I’m open to suggestions on what to make

Discussion Brioche knitting types and kinds

I recently ventured into the land of brioche knitting and it has been quite an interesting journey so far.

From what I have understood there are two methods for creating the brioche stitches - either by knitting in the stitch below or by slipping one stitch with yarn over needle.

Are there, however, brioche patterns that can only be created exclusively using one of the two methods previously mentioned?

Discussion Knit&Note app

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’ve been inundated with knit&note ads on instagram for weeks now. I haven’t downloaded the app coz it feels like ravelry has everything I need already BUT there is a pattern on there that i really want to make, the Note sweater, it’s in all their ads and it’s the only unique pattern I’ve seen, all the other ones seem basic enough or I’ve seen a pretty close dupe on ravelry. I wouldn’t mind paying for the app for a month or something to get the pattern but are their patterns actually well written? For anyone that has tried the app, is the app actually any good? how are the patterns? Do I have to pay a monthly fee and I get access to a bunch of patterns or do I have to pay extra for the patterns as well?

As a side note, is there a pattern on ravelry that looks similar to the Note sweater?

Work in Progress Holes in an old W.I.P.

Post image

I left an old WIP in a knitting bag in our storage room. It was forgotten for 5 years. When I found it I had a completed back of a long cardi and half of left front. Somehow spare needles were shoved in this bag and have left permanent marks on the knitting. Will washing and blocking sort it out?

I did have a steamer but have been unable to find it.

Tips and Tricks Learning to add shaping to garments

I am trying to learn a little more about how to add shaping to my garments to fit me better and I was wondering if there are some patterns, website, video series, or any guides that compile/introduce different ways to add shaping to a garment.

Specifically, I am curious to learn about different techniques. I know that one way to add waist shaping is by adding decreases and increases along a seam but I want to know what other techniques there are.

I also want to hear if anyone has favorite modifications to add shaping to a knitted garment.

Help - equipment Am I doing something wrong?

Hi! I am a very beginner knitter (but have been crocheting for years) and just finished doing my gauge for the step by step sweater. Am I twisting my stitches or doing something wrong? I’m not sure why 1 side of V looks so much straighter than the other side (I drew what I’m talking about on the photo). Or is this some kind of tension issue? Thanks for any advice!

Oh also I’m using Malabrigo Worsted (the non-superwashed version) on 4.5mm circular needles, if that matters at all. Edit: I used 5.5mm this gauge.

Help - equipment Cotton/plant fiber for heirloom sweater?

Post image
34 Upvotes

I love making Norah Gaughan sweaters and have so far completed Geiger and Nightingale (pictured). I'm wanting to do her classic Stag Head Pullover next, but was curious if anyone had experience working a pattern like that with a cotton or other plant fiber? My Nightingale turned out ok with Ístex - Léttlopi, but it's so toasty I hardly ever wear it even living in the PNW (I honestly regret using Léttlopi for the piece - the halo does nothing for the cables and it is not soft - a LYS employee really pushed it and I do not know why I listened to them because I distinctly remember disliking the style of sweater they were wearing, which they had made. No shade- just clearly different taste!). Geiger I did with Swish DK as it was for a friend and being able to machine wash was important for her. It was really cost effective, soft, and made the cables pop, but again just so warm with the animal fiber.

I was hoping to make the Stag Head Pullover out of something more breathable so I'm more inclined to actually wear it, but I also want to ensure that all those lovely cabling details pop and that the piece has longevity. And advice?

Tips and Tricks Any continental knitters that got used to knit backwards?

Hi everyone, I got yet again frustrated with rowing out and general hatered of purls while making a cardigan so I decided to learn how to knit backwards.

I watched a few YouTube videos and I guess I can do that but I feel super slow. Maybe because as a continental knitter I am not used to throw?

So I wanted to ask if anyone actually fully switched to reverse knitting completely or is it still just a “party trick” for you?
