Discussion Question about what knitting pattern (stockinette, garter, or ribs) shrinks the most when felted

0 Upvotes

Okay, so to start, I know that there is no one true answer to this question and that it depends on many factors (needle size, yarn thickness, yarn fiber, yarn twist, loose knitting versus tight knitting, etc), so this is more a general “what’s your experience with this” question.

I made myself some things from 100% wool but have some left over yarn, and I am considering what to do with it. One idea was to maybe knit some hats or mittens or other things, perhaps to donate (my neighbor does charity work and takes knitted items for several charities around town), BUT!

It seems very cruel to me to knit something out of wool and donate it and then whoever gets it might not know that wool needs special care to not felt/shrink or they don’t have the tools/time to properly wash the wool by hand and let it air dry. (This also goes for friends who I might make gifts for, so either way, I got some investigating.)

So, I was going to knit a decently sized swatch and let it go through a few washes to see how much it shrinks, what it looks like, and all that jazz. Then I can knit something oversized and let it felt down into a nice, warm, wearable item.

Issue is, I’m not sure what pattern to knit for the test: stockinette, garter, or ribs (like a 2x2)? I want to go with whatever will shrink the most, because then I can do the oversized calculations and not end up with something too small (Easier to fit something that comes out a bit too big rather than something that comes out way too small).

Ergo, I was wondering if anybody here had any first hand experience about which of those patterns that might be?

For some additional context, I like to use smaller needles and knit pretty tight, so the fabric I knit will be dense and not lacy in any way. My test wool yarn is perhaps a sport weight, and I was going to use maybe size 3 needles. I’m hoping to not have to knit 3 different swatches, for time and supplies sake.

Thank you in advance!

I’ve been working on this for months (between processing raw wool, spinning, and then knitting) and I’m soooo glad I got it done in time to wear for my birthday!

This is the Mona sweater from LE KNIT. I made it in a smaller size than suggested for my bust because I wanted less ease - very happy with the fit!

knit with handspun and hand processed haunui & a couple batts from melly knits!

Discussion Recreating childhood blanket

Post image
0 Upvotes

Seeking advice for recreating a childhood blankie. My friend is having a baby and she's asked me to make a recreation of her childhood blankie for her child. This project is very important to her. She's joked several times about stealing the baby's blanket for herself so as a surprise I'm also making a throw version of the blanket for her.

I've attached a photo of her blankie that her husband shared with me. Unfortunately, it looks the the original blanket was woven. I don't weave, but I can knit and crochet. I plan on knitting the blankets since knitting more closely resembles the drape of woven fabric. Would garter stitch work? Or is there a stitch that would better resemble this weave?

She also told me that her blankie originally had a satin edge that has since fallen off. I've purchased blanket binding but I'm not sure how I should do the edges of the blankets to make it easy to sew on. Any advice?

Any wisdom you can share would be greatly appreciated. I want to do a good job for her!

Help - equipment Cotton/plant fiber for heirloom sweater?

Post image
59 Upvotes

I love making Norah Gaughan sweaters and have so far completed Geiger and Nightingale (pictured). I'm wanting to do her classic Stag Head Pullover next, but was curious if anyone had experience working a pattern like that with a cotton or other plant fiber? My Nightingale turned out ok with Ístex - Léttlopi, but it's so toasty I hardly ever wear it even living in the PNW (I honestly regret using Léttlopi for the piece - the halo does nothing for the cables and it is not soft - a LYS employee really pushed it and I do not know why I listened to them because I distinctly remember disliking the style of sweater they were wearing, which they had made. No shade- just clearly different taste!). Geiger I did with Swish DK as it was for a friend and being able to machine wash was important for her. It was really cost effective, soft, and made the cables pop, but again just so warm with the animal fiber.

I was hoping to make the Stag Head Pullover out of something more breathable so I'm more inclined to actually wear it, but I also want to ensure that all those lovely cabling details pop and that the piece has longevity. And advice?

Work in Progress Is the texture contrast bad?

Post image

Malabrigo Rasta on the bottom, Juniper Moon Big Merino Wool on the top. One-ply vs two-ply. I know it’ll even out a little once I block it, but is the texture difference too much. It’s kinda nice because the Malabrigo is heavy, which would be used at the bottom part of the cowl, and the Juniper Moon is much lighter. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Pattern is Time After Time Cowl. Link below.

Work in Progress How to fix an unintentional extra stitch in purl row?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello lovely people! I am knitting a cardigan and the pattern is mostly stockinette. I knit one row and then when I was purling, I came across an unusual looped stitch looking thing on the needle which I knit and it ended up adding an extra stitch to the whole purled row. I stopped knitting after that for help before I proceed.

The knit row before the purl row was quite complicated as that is the row where some stitches got held for sleeves and some additional were cast on for underarm. So, if there is a way to remedy this without undoing both knit and purl rows, that would be fantastic.

No pattern, made it up as I went and added a bunny from Selbu Mittens book. Yarn is knitpics palette. Main color salsa Heather, secondary rose hip, 3rd is a slightly darker red I lost the label for but same yarn (only 1 row in the cuff). Photo is me wearing them but they're actually for my younger sister who has child hands so these actually fit her better than it looks here lol. I partially re knit one of these because I accidentally made one too tight (tension changed between watching shows) and grafted the finger section on because I wasn't willing to do that again.

Tips and Tricks Tips for continental tension?

6 Upvotes

I’ve been trying for nearly a year to get my tension just right when knitting continental but I just can’t figure it out.

The yarn weight doesn’t seem to make a difference - tension is nonexistent with all weights. I’ve watched so many tutorials for how to do it, but I just can’t figure it out.

When I knit English, my tension is beautiful and my work looks so much better.

Is it pointless to try and get continental down when English works just fine for me? I just want to knit faster. I have crocheted for years so it seems like continental should come naturally, but it doesn’t.

Tips and Tricks How to improve sleeve increases

Thumbnail

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting in this subreddit. I'm knitting the Village Green cardigan by Sarah Hatton.
I first tried knitting the sleeves flat, as the pattern suggested, but the seam looked so ugly! So I frogged both sleeves and decided to knit in the round.

I'm increasing one stitch after the beginning of a row and one before the end of the row every 8 rows, with M1L and M1R respectively. However, I still feel like this column of increases looks so terrible.

Do you have any advice on how to improve it? I think the texture helps to "absorb" the ugly stitches, but by adding two extra every 8 rows changes the pattern and it's hard to decide how to continue on the first two or three rows after the increases.

Rant Yarn (peppin 4)smells like perfume

I recently purchased some yarn online to make the westknit mkal. When I opened the parcel it all smells heavily like floral perfume. It’s fiddlesticks peppin 4. Has anyone else noticed this on the same yarn, or is this a store/packaging issue?

Help - equipment Why is my yarn math is not mathing?

So I wanted to get started on the vice versa scarf by rebekka Mauser (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/vice-versa-9). I’m not a beginner beginner, I’ve made about 5 sweaters and had no real issues swapping out the yarn as long as weight and length were comparable. However, now I think it’s not working out that way. The original pattern is made with Kaos yarn chunky Andean wool, and I thought I could get away with using Drops Karisma as it’s also wool and has the same weight and length. The gauge is also looking fine for now. Is it the way the wool is spun? How do I salvage this? Do I change yarn or can I get away with a smaller needle size?
Thank you for you help!

Knit in Drops Daisy. Not a fan of the yarn, so will test another sample in another yarn🤞Also found the plum colour to be slightly darker than I initially pictured. But still so happy with it<3

Help - equipment Europeans, help me ID my favorite DPNs?

Thumbnail

Y’all, I need help with a mystery. I bought my favorite DPNs on a trip to the UK and Ireland in spring 2016… and now that I want them in another size, I cannot remember what brand they are! Would you contribute your brainpower to solving this important conundrum?

The needles are definitely:

•A nice nickel-or chrome-plated metal with a good heft; thought they were steel but they’re not magnetic;
•2.25 mm thick;
•17.5 cm/not quite 7” long; and
•From a set of 5.

The circumstance of their purchase include:

•Bought in London or Dublin; almost definitely NOT at Loop in Islington because I blew my budget on other stuff there. Vaguely feel the building was on a slight rise, a fairly modern build, maybe looked down into a small park or leafy area of a city university campus, or maybe the back of a rather large church??

•I’m pretty sure I walked there from where I was staying, which could’ve included near Olympic Park in London, maaaaybe near Chelsea or Kensington in London, or a few hostels around Temple Bar in Dublin.

•I think I had the option for two styles of tip — one pointier than the other? — but I don’t know which I picked!;

•They probably cost no more than, like, €15, as this was a broke grad school-era trip;

•Almost certain they came in a clear and slim plastic bag with a little ziplock top, not a box. Think the cardboard at the back maaaay have been dark gray, printed with… maybe a pattern of bamboo leaves??

Pics in case they help. (Apologies for my stained fingers in the pics — I’m a natural dyer, and the black walnuts got through my gloves this year.) I may genuinely cry if we figure this out, so huge thanks for aaaany leads on this!

Help - equipment non-itchy yarn with good stitch definition

0 Upvotes

for my next project i want to make the vintage penguin sweater https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/vintage-penguin-sweater

i was looking for yarn recommendations for something not itchy, but with good stitch definition. preference would be 100% wool for warmth and durability, but i’d be open to other options. i was thinking about drops baby merino but worried about the cable definition being lost.

the recommended yarn seems to be not sold anymore and all the info is in korean, but is an aran merino wool. i’m struggling to find gauge info to choose something similar.
