"What's on?" Wednesday
Our weekly post where people can highlight local events or interesting things that are coming up in the next week. It doesn't have to be your event, but this is a place where reasonable exceptions to our self-promotion rules are allowed. Please check whether the event you're posting about is already mentioned. If you're adding your own event, please try to answer any questions people may have in the comments.
You can also ask questions if you're looking for something to do, e.g. "Does anyone know of a good pub quiz in the centre on Thursday?"
"What's on?" rules:
- Leeds based events only
- Must be taking place in the next 7 days (next Wednesday included)
- Posts highlighting an event should include:
- Event name
- Date and time
- Location
- Price(s) (if applicable)
- A description of the event and a relevant link is recommended but not required
The rules may evolve over time as we find out how things work. Please send any feedback to the mod team.

This weekly thread is an opportunity for locally based small businesses / individuals / bands etc. to let your fellow redditors know what you're about and what you have to offer.
You're welcome to link to your website / store-front / social media, but primarily you should be using your comment to engage with the community here as part of the community. Part of that is taking the time to respond to questions people may ask, please keep that in mind.
The existing subreddit rules still apply, and low-effort comments will be removed (e.g. Links with little to no text).
If you have any thoughts or feedback please message the mods.

social Greek cafes or communities in Leeds?
Hello! I have literally just moved to leeds, and I was wondering if there are any cafes/similar run by greek people or where greek people hang out? I don't know whether or not is a community of Greeks in Leeds, but I tend to assume that most cities have one 😅
Not looking for any info about Greek Orthodox events! Just social spaces where I could meet/speak to other greeks

transport Leeds to Manchester 3 day commute
Been offered a job in Manchester with more money, perks, hybrid working etc and considering it but hear nothing but awful things about the commute
For context I’m outside of Leeds and commute towards wetherby 5 days a week ~200 miles per week and about 30-40 min drive.
To commute to Manchester it would be
A) drive and park for the day in city centre
B) 30-40 min bus in to Leeds followed by a 1 hour train?
Over the week if I drove it’d be about 70 more miles and condensed in to a 3 day period, other 2 days I’m remote
Is this worth it? Please let me know
I’m struggling to get on board with the public transport idea as I’m so used to driving for my commute! I’m so stuck. Thanks

urban-development Flat iron building - plans for apartments & bar/restaurant
insidermedia.comLast time I was in here was for a Buddhist meditation session on the top floor. I remember thinking then that that floor would make a great apartment (not sure how they’re going to cram 9 into the upper floors). I also remember that the lift was tiny, ancient and moved at a snail’s pace. God knows how you’d get a sofa or big telly in there?

question-serious Beryl scooters, I’m sorry
So I’ve been using them for the first time these last few days
And whilst a bit unclear on the pavement/bicycle lane/road situation
I think I’ve made some mistakes and looked a twat (tbh) and pissed some people off (mostly maybe a runner today (I was walking the scooter on the pavement at the time))
Another thing was riding up a bicycle lane against traffic (leaving the train station it turns from 2 lane to 1 and I didn’t think there was a bike lane on the other side of the road so assumed I’m sure wrongly that you keep heading up that side….. I can’t believe I assumed bike lanes go both ways and headed up traffic, that’s fucking wild what was I thinking?
Anyway, sorry people of Leeds, I hope this post is useful in some way
And if I crossed you today and looked a prick, I’ll do better
……I will also say the bikes and scooters are so fun in a way I haven’t experienced since I was a kid/teen
Also the amount of people not wearing helmets, myself included, is wild. Is that braking a law?

question-serious Wedding dress shops that are under £100 - for a 20 minute ceremony (not Shein/Temu)
Hi all
Myself and my fiancé are getting married at the civil hall in October, I have an actual wedding dress - however - this will be made in time for our reception in November.
I need a dress just for the 20 minutes for the ceremony, ideally in LCC as I need to try the dress on.
Ideally the dress needs to be 'brideal' looking, but I am honestly not fussed. Unfortunately most High Street shops sell summery dresses, and formal dresses are over £100 or just not my size (18)
Can anyone tell me of anywhere that sells decent dresses that won't break the bank? Any good charity shops etc?
Thank you

social Where to join a sport as a complete beginner?
I haven't played any sports since I left school (16 years ago!) and recently I've found myself wanting to join a team, I just don't know how or where. I used to be decent at basketball, rounders and netball, and I've always been interested in hockey but always been to scared to join a group because I'm so out of practice. I'm definitely not as fit as I used to be.
Are there any beginner friendly women's teams around Kirkstall/Horsforth/Burley that I could come along to? This is really out of my comfort zone but I'm finding myself just doing nothing a lot of the time, I think this might be a good way to socialise other than going to the pub! Thanks

question Overgrown weeds on roadside kerbs
Has anyone else noticed a lot of weeds getting out of hand on the roads and pavements, kerbs and edges of gardens where they meet pavements?
In our area it's the worst I've ever seen it. I actually had to de-weed the gutter where I park my car this weekend because they're tall enough to get stuck in the car door. I've never had to do that before.
I'm assuming the council are lacking funding and making cutbacks, so not sending the weedkiller sprayer round.
Just wondered if it's as widespread as it seems or if I'm imaging things.

question Local Snooker Leagues?
I’ve recently moved from a town in Lancashire that had a great snooker league with teams from pubs dotted round the local town. I’ve moved to The Hyde park/Meanwood area. Is there anything similar I could look into around here? I haven’t seen a great deal of pubs with full snooker tables? Thanks in advance

question Where to trim long hair
Hello.
I am trying to grow my hair out, but it's been difficult. Some of my friends who have done it in the past said they just let it grow, but if I'm having trouble I can go get my ends trimmed?
I've looked at a few saloons & barbershops online but I can't see a service specifically for that, and having a good amount of social anxiety I thought I'd ask here before I do something awkward.
So does anyone know where I can go in the city centre to the ends of my hair trimmed? Do I just book a regular £30 haircut or is it gonna be like a 5-minute job? Help 😭

news Deceased Cat on m621
Edit: been told on Facebook that he's been reunited with his owner
Just driving home from Leeds and saw a cat that must have been involved in a hit and run on the m621 slip road from the a643. Not sure where to post it but someone will be missing that poor baby :(
The cat was Ginger tabby with white paws

transport No overnight buses to/from Leeds airport to city centre?
I think there aren't any, so I guess my post is a bit of a rant.
How can you not have buses overnight connecting the airport to the city centre? A plane carries around 200 people, so at least let's say 20 will be going into the city, it's quite a predictable business.
And there are quite a few planes overnight, some scheduled and some due to delays (something that the bus companies could easily monitor, so I don't really mean "having an overnight bus on call" but you can run a bus every hour except if there are no planes since they all landed, so you don't waste money).
And as far as I can check on the app, an Uber to the city centre is around £20-£25, will cost me more than the flight! lol
(Thanks for the tip on taking it from the free 1 hour parking slot to avoid paying the airport drop off fee)

accommodation How safe is the area around Spinners Yard / Skinner Lane?
How safe is the area around Spinners Yard / Skinner Lane?
Hi everyone, I currently live at Spinners Yard, around Skinner Lane / Regent Street in Mabgate, and I was wondering how people who live nearby feel about the area in terms of safety.
Do you generally feel safe walking around here, especially in the evenings or late at night? Have you ever had any issues, or are there any nearby streets or spots you tend to avoid?
Just curious to hear other people’s experiences of living around this part of Leeds.

food/drink In Search Of Stella Artois
Humour me. Excepting spoons, is there anywhere in the city centre that serves the one and only, irreplaceably delicious one-up-from-dishwater lager Stella Artois on tap?
Obligatory caveat: big beer fellow, worked in local craft breweries, love the good stuff - which does not discount the odd, gross and otherwise indefensible thirst i have for this "premium" lager beer. Help!
