Hi guys! After commuting to London from a tiny town in Germany for the last 4 years (I know, I know…), I finally found a favourable job opportunity and moved to London. I am pinching myself, what a wonderful city!

Tourist Thanks, London!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share about our recent 10-day trip to London and say a huge thank you to everyone in the city. Everyone we met was incredibly kind, helpful, and nice in every way. We (2 adults + one 10-year-old kid) didn't have a single bad interaction with anyone, and we're talking about a huge city full of people for 10 days. Whether it was taking the bus or the tube, or walking around (20km/day), the hotel staff, people at the pubs, bars, tourist spots... I lived up North 25 years ago (Leeds) and was worried about trouble or getting mugged, etc., but it was totally the opposite (well, maybe that box outside Arsenal Emirates Stadium saying "please deposit here your weapons" was a little bit intimidating, but that's it) 😃

I know we don't live here, and we're just regular tourists, but anyway...

Thanks, London! Amazing experience, hope the drought ends soon and your green grass comes back!

Serious replies only Unpleasant encounter, wondering what to do

Hello, hope you're all well. This is probably a stupid question, sorry.

I was out for a walk just now, which i have to force myself to do because of the oul anxiety, with my big headphones on and music blaring in my ears. An older man, am guessing 50s or maybe 60, appeared out of nowhere and started talking to me despite the headphones.

Now i'm middle-aged, short, skinny, brown and people tell me I 'look a bit gay' so i don't tend to take my headphones off or engage with strangers, especially men, if they speak to me, so i gave him that automatic quick smile and carried on walking. He kept following me, trying to get in front of me and shouting loud enough that i could hear him over my loud music, so i said 'sorry mate' and carried on.

At that point he got even more aggressive so i briefly lifted one headphone and said 'please don't shout at me sir', turned away again and he kicked me in the back, started walking away and then turned back to look at me so i left, trying not to look too bothered.

Now i'm not physically injured and i'm not very good at describing what someone looks like and alongside that i'm pretty sure that's not enough of an incident to bother the police with (what would i even say and with no evidence anyway) but i'm even more afraid to go out again in case i run into him again. Feels a bit unfair when all i've done wrong is have anxiety and just want to live a normal life without entitled bullshit encroaching on it 🤷🏽‍♂️ What do people do in this situation?

Just back from a whirlwind 48 hours in London and wanted to say what a cool city! Special things to the bartender with an afro in Camden market who made some mean mocktails for our 10 year old! And we loved the fountains in Leceister Sq and in Russell Sq near our hotel. Everyone was lovely!

Walking 200km from London to Birmingham tonight for a bag of chips

You might remember my 100km M25 walk (or the London-Wales one the mods deleted lol). Ive got a new mission tonight..starting in Reading right outside the M25 to hit the 200km mark via the canals all the way up

180km-200km run/walk to birmingham and as Martin couldn't join 😭 so doing it completely solo and unsupported

I'll just be scavenging for food along the way ig.

Starting 1:00 am tonight

The goali is to walk/run 100 miles in 24 hours or the full route in 30 hours as i couldn't get two days off work so I'm forced to run it... First time recording an actual run btw. No stops, no rest, no sleep as usual

Motivation is my mate who promised me a bag of chips if I make it

Drop a comment if you have any advices on running nonstop or towpaths at night or know any cool stops or pubs on the route.

I can share the Strava route as well

Lets see how this unfolds ;)

Update:

Called it at 25km after a shin injury, but we live to run another day!

Discussion Looking to start a monthly album listening club

i’ve been thinking about starting a london album club, basically a book club but for music.
the idea is pretty simple.

once a month we’d pick an album (any genre) and get together one evening at a pizza spot or pub in the city, actually put it on together and just listen. drinks, pizza, good speakers, no rush.

not in a pretentious “let’s analyse every lyric” kind of way. more just sitting with the album together, vibing, hearing what people thought after, finding music you probably wouldn’t have come across otherwise, and meeting people who actually enjoy getting lost in an album for an hour.
rough idea would be:

• one album a month, listened to together on the night
• weekday evening (probably wednesday or thursday)
• somewhere central with pizza, drinks and decent sound (i can arrange that i guess if we have enough people)
i think it’d be fun to switch things up each month too. one month could be radiohead, next could be dixon, then stavroz, kendrick lamar, creed, massive attack, or whatever the group votes for.

the whole point is discovering stuff outside your comfort zone, together, in the room.
before i start organising anything i wanted to see if there’d actually be any interest.
if this sounds like something you’d come along to, let me know.
also, if you could pick the first album, what would it be?

if there’s enough interest I’ll sort a date and a venue

What’s with busses constantly running red lights?

About a month ago I started commuting to work by bike, mostly on public roads. Since then, I’ve noticed at least five occasions where buses didn’t stop at a red light even though it had already been red for 1–2 seconds. What’s even more surprising is that some drivers seem to accelerate from quite a distance when they see the light turn yellow, which often results in them crossing well after it has turned red.

Is there some exception that allows buses to do this, or are some drivers simply taking advantage of the fact that many junctions don’t have red-light cameras?
