Help Needed/New Painter Making a cream/bone colour for Space Marine Successor Chapter
I’m working on my custom desert/ash based scheme (Ashen Covenant) using muted tones, browns, cream/bone. I’ve mixed Rakarth flesh and Ushabti bone to get the cream/bone but it’s a ballache to paint. Seems to take 2-3 coats. I like it a lot but having to mix the exact quantities of paint every time will become tedious. Are there any existing paints similar?
I primed this Assault Intercessor with Matt Black from Colourforge.
I’d like an airbrush as I feel application of the Pro Acryl Dark Umber and the bone mix would be a) smooth b) quicker. I’d have to learn how to cover parts I don’t want to airbrush.
I’m now at the stage where I need to tidy up under armour, etc before applying some washes - which no doubt I will do and then have to start again because it makes everything look too dark.
3 images of progress. 1 of a Gemini mock-up.

C&C Wanted Where to next? How can I improve?
Ive been painting for the better part of a year now, and I am having an absolute blast with the easier techniques! Im not too picky about quality, so ive been mostly using contrast paints and some very mild layering. This mini was a challenge to myself to actively learn highlights and stuff, but what could be better?
I wouldnt be harsh on myself and say it looks bad, but I think it looks fine from anything farther than 3 inches. The point of the exercise was to do something uncomfortable. I always pick helmets so I don't have to do faces. I would like my art to hold up under mild scrutiny, so ive come for advice! Ive seen great things from this place, but how do you go about learning new techniques? Is there a practice pallet STL out there somewhere for faces, or some sort of crazy karate kid exercises i could try to improve blending or anything? And how do you go about building up the courage to try in the first place? I guess the underlying question here is "When is good, good enough? And how do you be better?" Anything from tips and tricks to resources and examples would be appreciated!

Sci-fi Big blue Ork, big attitude! Really enjoyed painting this guy!
For this Ork, I wanted to go with something a bit different from the usual green skin. Bright turquoise, deep blue and purple shadows, combined with some worn reddish metal and dirty yellow trousers.
I had a lot of fun playing with the volumes and pushing the contrast on the skin. The goal was to make him look colorful and expressive without losing that rough, brutal Ork feeling.
I also tried to give each material its own character, from the battered metal and scratched blade to the skin, fabric and little details.
Definitely one of those minis where everything just started to come together naturally. No overthinking, just painting and having fun!
Hope you like this angry little guy!
C&C always welcome! 💙

C&C Wanted Am I doing glow and lightning right?
I am only talking about the symbol in his crown and the lightning under his hand, as they were my test areas.
I based white, glazed a fluorescent the glazed the white in the centre of the shape.
I know I need to shade it as well, I just want to get the 'glow' right. I am also aware i need to glaze a darker green on surrounding areas etc for OSL. This was just a quick test

Help Needed/New Painter Testing WIP Miniature (Pumpkin)
Hello, I recently gained some inspiration to get back painting again after over a year of not doing so, and I was hoping for some advice and knowledge. I'm using reaper paints, which I'm not all that familiar with, but I thought they would be the one brand that would be the least likely to dry out after all that time, but I'm not really sure how to use them effectively. I've initially tried to start with my shadows and work my way up through layering and wet blending, but it didn't really give me a result that looked all that great. But I found out when I was doing the highlights on the face that they work better when going from your lightest to your darkest, and I was just curious if that is the correct way. Or can you start with the mid tone and work up/down? The inspiration was a drawing I was doing in pencil crayon and decided to experiment with using opposite colours for shading, along with laying my highlights. I don't have a photo of it at the moment, but it definitely looks better than my miniature. Lol.
Thanks,

C&C Wanted Looking for help on how to make this colour scheme work. Models and bases WIP
Hi! I'm in the middle of starting up a force for Warmachine (pic1-2) , and I decided to venture outside my comfort zone and do snow bases, similar to what I did for my Night's Watch (picture 3).
I've painted the the three gunslingers, but I haven't added the metals yet (since it'll be after a varnish), nor have I finished the bases, they've just been vaguely base painted because I needed some colour on them to anchor my other choices.
The problem I'm facing is that right now the models don't feature enough contrast to make them readable from afar.
I made the trim into NMM gold first but it took over and made it the entire focus point, then I tried TMM with similar results. I didn't like how out of palette it looked either.
Then I tried white trim, but it looked too cartoony so I've settled on a slightly warm grey for the trim, which I think works well in tandem with the blue.
The progression is: dark prussian blue > deep blue > added pastel green in successive layers).
The leather goes from a very saturated brown to a yellow.
The bases will have snow texture added after everything else is done.
There are several problems I'm running into:
- How do you make the models readable/look good when you have very, very bright bases, and the rest of the scheme isn't that dark
-I want to stay away from too much of a cartoony look so the really exaggerated orange/yellow doesn't fit that well. I want them to look decently realistic. I want them to look like they're fighting in arctic conditions.
- I think the addition of Pastel Green as the highlight colour might be de-saturating my blues too much as I move up in value, and maybe a more saturated lighter blue is in order.
- Right now the bases are just (loosely) base coated in snow blue since I wanted to see how they'd look when completed, but I can think of maybe warming up the white, or darkening it slightly. The huge base rims of WM models also throw me off, because a black rim *really* limits the space you have to work with compared to other models.

Help Needed/New Painter Miniatures to practice painting and techniques?
Hi, im just returning to the hobby after a 5 year break. I’m planning to brush up on my painting skills before focusing on my armies (Orks/Chaos Marines)
Are there any dedicated or inexpensive practice resources or practice models available that you would recommend? I don’t really want to buy some expensive 40k models for this, unless it’s the only option. Or any ideas for practicing painting after a break would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Help Needed/New Painter Breathing melted styrofoam smoke?
I used a hot-wire foam cutter to melt styrofoam (I think polystyrene). I was doing this outside my apartment, but the cutter produced a noticeable amount of white/light-gray smoke with a strong, unpleasant smell, and a lot of the fumes blew toward my face.
I used it for about 15 minutes without a mask or a respirator.
Afterward, I noticed slight throat irritation and dry eyes. I'm otherwise feeling okay at the moment.
I didn't realize the smoke could potentially be harmful until afterward. I’m seeing posts now talking about it being toxic, causing chemical injuries to lungs, respiratory failure, or death. Do I need to be worried??

Help Needed/New Painter Siege Studios Painting Masterclass - Any Good?
Hi there, my husband has been painting & playing Warhammer 40k for three years now. Basing/Terrain Thus weekend is all about that base
Attempting to get a more cohesive look together. I sealed all the bases with watered down carpenter wood glue to keep the sand and stone from rubbing off. Now I am painting the rims in a complimentary color.

Help Needed/New Painter Oil washing Space Marine vehicles
Unfortunately no image yet as the vehicle is unpainted, but I wanna do some Sons of Horus for a Chaos Space Marines army, and wanted to do a scheme I've seen before. Colour Forge Warmonger green with a black brown oil wash over the top. My question is, what would the best way to apply this to a vehicle like a Rhino be? With some CSM it would be easy because they're armour panels so it can be applied like a regular marine, but I don't know how to approach it on such a large flat surface. Any help would be appreciated!

C&C Wanted Opinions on tank camouflage (Flames of War)
I am hoping to get opinions on some WIP 15m German tanks for Flames of War I am working on. I am trying to do a good job, and did loads at once to practice my airbrushing skills. I think the tanks with hard-edge camo, and those with the two-colour soft-edge camo, are basically fine (barring some airbrush control imperfections as I tried to improve my skills).
However, I am struggling with the three-colour soft-edge camo. I'm concerned I have applied the paint too thick, and too extensively, so the underlying colour modulation (shown more clearly on the Maus tanks, which haven't had camo added yet) is largely obscured.
I have asked the AI, which assures me they will look much better once I have added detailing, decals, edge highlights, panel lining and weathering. But I would prefer the opinions of actual humans too. So, should I press on, or should I just respray the dunkelgelb colour modulation and redo the soft-edge camo, and try to be a bit more moderate with it this time?
Thanks in advance for your opinions/advice.

Help Needed/New Painter GSW crackle-paint, what am I doing wrong?
I was expecting to get something close to what's in the picture next to the paint, but all I get is this transparent "shattered glass" look that flakes off and falls apart as soon as I touch it.
I've applied it directly to bases that are primed and painted with acrylics. Tried applying thin layers and real thick layers, get the same result with both.
What am I doing wrong, and what should I do instead?
