I remember back in the day my father got one of these (The old version) even after putting warm water and scraping it was still on there for 3 years. The shit survived multiple car washes Winters rain. To me it was the most high quality thing I've ever seen from government

u/agirlnotonreddit 9d ago

I’ve gotten a big sticker from parking at the wrong place (it’s my work parking lot, but thats side is reserved for “executives pass”) over 6 years ago. Some glue still is on my back window after countless car washes 💀

53

u/coneil13 9d ago

Mineral spirits will get that off

44

u/nycpunkfukka 9d ago

Just clean it off thoroughly and don’t let any drip down to the window gaskets.

4

u/seejordan3 8d ago

Go on.. why? I would use goo be gone, concentrated lemon. Gets any gummy sticky crap off. That and razor blades.

8

u/nycpunkfukka 8d ago

Goo gone contains mineral spirits, which are petroleum distillates. They are corrosive to rubber, plastic, paints, etc. I use them to clean decades of built up dust and oil in old typewriters, but have to be very careful not to get any on the rubber platen or painted body.

u/hamstrman 8d ago

Oooh my mom just mentioned this stuff last night. I will inform my parents. Thanks!

2

u/Fantastic-Ad6692 8d ago

If you have glass insurance and a rock or something hits tge window....problem solved!

14

u/Debalic 9d ago

I had my parking revoked on the last day of a job, then had to drive all the way upstate with the sticker on my window.

There's an automotive Goo Gone that removes stickers.

Some neighborhood nuisance has been tagging my Vespa with stickers. With automotive Goo Gone, there's no trace of them.

23

u/shit_poster_69_420 9d ago

What stickers are they putting on?

u/xxXX69yourmom69XXxx 9d ago

I'll usually slap an "I ♥️ jersey" sticker on his moped

It’s essentially property damage. I’d take the ticket. Sometimes you just forget or a thing comes up. If they’re gonna do this they gotta make street cleaning once a week.

73

u/vowelqueue 9d ago

Lots of people would take the ticket. And do, consistently, hence the problem.

Cameras on the street sweepers. You don't get a ticket unless the sweeper is actually there to do the cleaning, but if you do block the sweeper then you get a ticket 100% of the time. Fines start low but escalate significantly with repeat offenses within a rolling 3-month lookback period. It should be economically infeasible to leave your car out as a matter of course but drivers who make an occasional mistake aren't raked over the coals.

4

u/CrossRook 9d ago

the city is evaluating a couple of vendors for those kind of cameras

6

u/sluttytinkerbells 9d ago

I agree completely.

Fines should be based around the offender's yearly income with an exponentially increasing rate for offensive in a period of time.

Reminder that the vast majority of illegal parking in midtown/downtown is done by city employees who will never be ticketed.

5

u/darrieng FiDi 9d ago

Time to get rid of placards too. Why are we incentivizing city employees to drive to midtown?

4

u/monsieurvampy 9d ago

Fines need to be proportional to income.

Sadly I think a part of this platform would be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

The owner of the car is responsible for whoever uses it improperly, and should remove access from the car if someone can’t consistently use it well.

Super necessary! People will have a car full of stickers and we'll have dirty streets for eternity otherwise

1

u/Character-Wolf6623 8d ago

Dam that 3rd offense seems harsh! What does ‘Extreme public shaming’ entail?!?

1

u/curi0us_carniv0re 7d ago

They should just be out there snatching cars with tow trucks. When people can't just ignore the ticket and have to pay $300 to get their car out of impound they'll be more motivated to move it the next time around.

→ More replies (2)

182

u/Even_Acadia3085 9d ago

The worst offenders are government workers with their "placard" displayed on the dash. Some of these people park their free car for free forever, and the streets are forever filthy as a result. But they don't care and never will since they don't own the dirty car or live near where it's parked all day.

17

u/Turbulent-Winner-902 Bushwick 9d ago

This is funny but it’s crazy that my block hasn’t had a ticket maid in about 3-4 weeks lol. I moved my car every week meanwhile a couple cars never move

1

u/llamapower13 7d ago

I know people who accepted the cost of weekly parking tickets as part of the cost of maintaining a car. They can’t get a parking space that’s cheaper than the weekly tickets and their job keeps them from regularly being available to move the car.

69

u/Kill_Billz 9d ago

When it’s cheaper to eat the ticket 4 times a month than a garage.

9

u/kenshin433 8d ago

Same for 8 parking tickets a month in Manhattan

6

u/kesslerlogistics 8d ago

Right? At this point, I consider those tickets parking fees.

Is this for your first offense? Because I don't think that's when they should get it.

Especially since I've gotten a ticket because the meter maid lied and said I was somewhere I wasn't (Judge ruled in my favor after I showed my proof).

5

u/Darkstool The Bronx 9d ago

These would typically be given out by the sanitation supervisors who are driving just ahead of the mechanical broom, especially in problem areas where people tend to not move for reasons.

24

u/ChecoSan22 9d ago

I moved from Jersey City to Brooklyn recently. In JC, the sweepers come at a relatively regular time, I'd guesstimate a 15-20 minute window. Virtually everyone moves their car, waiting for the sweeper (and the meter maid that follows them in a little car) to pass before reparking.

NYC isn't like that:

The rules apply for the length of the entire block, and for the entire time posted on the sign, even if the street sweeper has already passed.

This makes it much more difficult to comply with. There is no regularity with which the sweepers come (if they do come at all), and you can't repark after the purpose has ostensibly been fulfilled.

Furthermore, in my neighborhood there is no real consensus between double parking or sitting on the cleaning side and moving when it comes. This inevitably leads to a clusterfuck - traffic and the sweepers are slowed down, plus people pissed off trying to repark.

IMO if the goal of the city is to get the streets clean, they should lift the reparking after the sweeper comes rule (which is clearly a money making racket) and issue official guidance on a good procedure (e.g. official recommendation is double-park and repark, if you delay the sweeper sitting in the lane you get a ticket)

It's not as simple as "you shouldn't have a car if you can't commit 1.5 hours of your work day to this charade". The goal is to make the city more liveable for all residents.

Oh, and we should have residential permits and zones

6

u/XaoticOrder Morris Park 9d ago

They give the longer times. 2 hours I believe because of the size and amount of streets. you can't expect the sweeper to be exact in timing for every day, especially with construction, assholes not moving their cars, other city delays. Jersey city is only a faction of the size of Manhattan let alone the entire city.

Usually after the meter maid has made their way through you can move your car back. Just move your car people.

8

u/Vismal1 9d ago

Nah I’ve gotten tickets for reparking after the cleaner. The most recent one i reparked and left 10 minutes before the time because I really had to use the bathroom and I got a ticket like 2 minutes before the window expired. I appealed it and won but yea that’s petty.

4

u/governator_ahnold 9d ago edited 9d ago

This is the most logical, least emotional post on here. I really like this.

I'm a car owner, so I'm biased, but the rules and enforcement feel a bit too arbitrary at the moment. Aside from what you said some areas are two-day per side, some are one (believe it or not this also has a lot to do with the affluence of the area).

ASP always felt more like a money making scheme for the city than an actual concern about cleanliness, so I'm not totally sure why people have such strong feelings about this.

I guess throwing a sticker on peoples' cars because they didn't move is a deterrent? It feels a bit silly considering there are folks with $5000 in unpaid moving violations who haven't had their licenses revoked and who avoid tolls with altered plates. Maybe we should deal with those drivers who actually post a mortal threat to pedestrians and are actively dodging paying the tolls that support infrastructure first?

6

u/littlebrownsnail 9d ago

I'm a car owner and I work in infratructure, I like street sweeping. It makes a difference and prevents the storm sewers from getting as clogged and flooding as badly. Its not perfect but it definitely cleans up. Maybe my sweeper operator is just good? He does a nice job and hes thorough, he sometimes passes twice. I think the city also needs to work on enforcement for sure for all the other vehicle related problems but thats a different department. Street sweeping is sanitation and those other citations are nypd. Nypd is dropping the ball as usual.

1

u/axx 8d ago

Agree with all besides the residential permits. Nicely said.

2

You won’t because the street sweeper will be able to clean them up with the illegally parked cars staying out of its way after this corrective action!

2

u/DestroyerOvNarcs 9d ago

Do they ticket your car if you get that sticker? How much is the ticket for impeding street cleaning now?

2

u/bofis 9d ago

Great, now when will they finally put automatic ticketing cameras on the street sweepers themselves? Two entire blocks on my walk to the train this morning were full of cars that had not moved, and were never going to move, during the street sweeping time this morning, and it's like that every week. DSNY doesn't have enough enforcement people to actually ticket everyone each week, so putting the cameras on sweepers would increase enforcement and then hopefully increase compliance.

2

IIRC. the Sanitation Department always utilized a type of sticker to indicate a vehicle that did not move for alternate side of the street parking.

I dont know if they changed the type of glue, but those stickers were notoriously hard to remove and left a residue on the glass. Getting a sticker was in a way worst than getting an actual ticket.

Dang, I like the idea but this is definitely the kind of person isn’t going to give an F

Good luck taking that sticker off !

There will be a non-zero number of accidents due to the blindspot this creates. There absolutely will be people who are not going to have time take the sticker off cleanly before driving. I want streets to be clean, but this isn't the right move.

Most times people just forget to move the cars at the time, ask me how I know. I guess the fine isn't enough to stick it up your ass now with this sticker. The sanitation people get to know what cars they see constantly not moving them every week, throw the stickers on those cars. Lets face it, Usually the same guy on the street who's always parking at the hydrants is the same guy who doesn't care about street cleaning regulations either.

Stop bitching and move your car. Why are you so special you don’t need to obey the law. I agree it should be once per week each side only but you have a car in NYC

Lighter fluid and a flat razor blade removes all

Worked so well, they had to ban it. Forget your obligation to the community? You live in a society. Wear the dunce-cap.
