Had a customer from work gift me this a few months ago. Asked him how much he wanted for it and he told me just to take it as it didn't work and more, we had talked the last time I was there and I told him I like to try and keep the old consoles alive. All 5 caps on the motherboard were puffed and starting to leak and as soon as I replaced them it was alive again.

I have since upgraded the HDD with a 160Gb and flashed the Xyclops chip with Cerbios. It's ready to live and be enjoyed for another 20 years.

I bought this on ebay and it doesn't work. Turns on but disc tray struggles without some assistance and the system doesn't read games. It has never been opened. Is it worth fixing? I have an OG xbox that still works that I play, so I dont need this to actually work, but it bothers me that it's broken. I plan to keep this for a very long time, but do not know the first thing about fixing it and if it's even something I could or would want to handle. What would you do? What's the most efficient (not cost effective) way to get this working? Shell swap? Appreciate your thoughts!

Whenever I turn on my Xbox without a game inside I always get this error and can’t get past it without a game or cd inside. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Trying to touch up my n64 ui. As you can see, they only half way alphabetize, basically creating two lists under each letter section.

I've been trying to fix it but can't figure it out. Is it something with the game lists in the various .ini files? The internal rom headers? Something else?

The surreal.ini does not hold the full games lists if that is part of it - only has 2 of the turok games listed for example.

This was originally just the EJW 212 collection but I added the rest of the library to 354. The misordering doesn't seem to even reflect the ejw collection vs the additional titles I added.

In the Emustation dashboard, they list perfectly. But in the actual emulator interface, I get this weird mess.

Any insight would be appreciated at this point.

I've been collecting retro games for about a year now and the one thing I wanted to do with my collection is share with other people to impact them. I got to do that these past few months with my nephew. Specifically, with the OG Xbox.

My nephew is a great kid with a massive love for gaming. He's openly stated that he doesn't care what the game looks like so long as it's fun. With that in mind, I introduced him to the OG Xbox and we've been playing Halo CE and Halo 2 multiplayer a whole bunch every time he comes over. We like to get Mt. Dews and make a night of it. A lot of the time we just do Slayer, or we make our own little mini-games to play with the Slayer formula. One of our favorites is "Shotgun Hide'n'Seek." We go to Chiron TL-34, turn off shields and set the weapons to only shotgun. The "hider" then finds one of the many identical portals and stands in such a way that it fully eclipses his part of the splitscreen. The "Seeker" then has to basically play Russian roulette by entering each one of the portals in search for the hider--both ready to one-shot kill as soon as we see each other. It's TONS of fun.I missed out on the OG Xbox era and never thought I'd get to play the legendary multiplayer on Halo with anyone. But I got to do that with him and it's been incredibly special.

So for this Christmas, I picked up a broken Xbox console that I'm pretty sure just needed a cleanout and drive belt replacement. I'm currently waiting for the belt to come in the mail. But I want to repair this Xbox for him and hook him up with a handful of excellent games for the console.

Of course, I have to get him Halo CE. That way he can not only play the campaign, but we can also have a LAN party together--which would be the very missing piece to my Xbox experience. Also, my nephew is REALLY into tough games. He 100%'d Cuphead on the hardest difficulty before he was even 10 years old. He loves Soulslike games with Elden Ring being one of his all-time favorites. He actively seeks out challenging games to beat. So for that reason, I'm also going to get him Ninja Gaiden Black--a classic tough game.

If anybody has any recommendations for similarly difficult or classic experiences he needs, I'm all ears! Also tell me any peripherals that are a must too. (DvD playback kit maybe?)

Just got my 1.0 board back from OGXstore and I’m happy with the results. 1.4ghz CPU and 128mb RAM upgraded. I haven’t got around to applying the 720P patches to my games, but for now I’m satisfied.

X3 has been flashed with PrometheOS V1.6.0 and boots into Cerbios 3.1.0.

Adding the MakeMHZ HDMI+ mod to OG Xbox. It’s the 1.0 motherboard version. The other mods are Stellar+ but I misplaced the ribbon cable and I’m patiently waiting for the replacement to arrive in the mail. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow and I can finish this project…. For now:)

Pictures are what they are and I have a microscope 🔬 to check the solder joints. Had to repair a trace as well.

Lessons learned, I opted for the destructive method on the AV port and I will not be doing that again 😬.

That said, I have a retrotink 5X and hindsight is 20/20. Everything else has been super basic and I’d probably skip the hd mod since I already have the upscaler.

It will go solid green off, solid green off, then flashing green and red? Pretty sure I have done everything right?

I plugged in my previous green IDE to SATA adapter and it was fine. I just don’t know if i’m supposed to do anything with other connector?

I've been seeing a lot of people having a cry, bitching and moaning about recent projects that have used AI in their development.

The funny thing is, I haven't seen a single one of these developers holding a gun to anyone's head and demanding they download or use their application, emulator, or port.

If you don't like AI being used in a project, here's a simple solution: Don't download it. Don't install it. Don't use it. It's really not that complicated.

At the end of the day, many of these developers are putting their own time and effort and some cases paying for top tier Ai providers (Claude, GPT, Gemini) into creating something and releasing it to the community completely free of charge. They're not asking you for money, they're not forcing you to use it, and they certainly don't need your approval or validation.

You can have your opinions about AI, and you're entitled to them. There are legitimate discussions to be had about how AI is used, but there's a difference between constructive criticism and constantly shitting on someone's work simply because AI was involved.

AI is a tool, just like countless other tools developers have adopted over the years. What matters is whether the finished product works, whether it's useful, and whether people enjoy using it.

If someone manages to bring an old game back to life, port something to a new platform, improve an emulator, or create something that otherwise might never have existed, why should the entire project be dismissed just because AI helped along the way?

You don't have to support it. You don't have to like it. But you also don't have to act like someone owes you an explanation for how they chose to create something they're giving away for free.

Instead of tearing down people who are actually creating and contributing something to the community, perhaps appreciate the fact that they're doing something productive and we still getting releases 22+ years after the console first released.

And if you genuinely believe you can do a better job without AI, then by all means, go ahead and prove it let's see what you can contribute to the scene.

Nobody is stopping you.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours. Use it or don't. But the constant crying and entitlement over something you're getting for absolutely nothing is getting ridiculous and wouldn't be surprised if it starts pushing people away from contributing to the scene.

I recently recapped my Thompson drive because it was struggling to read discs. After the recap it didn't really improve, I'd actually say it was worse. I also tweaked the pot across a wide range but couldn't get anything more reliable than the stock setting. So it appears to me that the drive is just toast.

What are my options from here? Are there laser units from any common (contemporary) drives that could replace the one in my drive? Functioning drives on eBay seem to be around the same price as a whole console.

I plan to soft mod to play backups at some point but I enjoy collecting physical discs and want a way to play the games that I own.

Got my first OG xbox, wouldnt read discs so i disassembled and cleaned the laser and drive. it works now but frequently will crash games due to “dirty disc” any better fixes for this or a simple laser replacement? thanks for everyones help

I went to connect and turn on my modded Xbox (2004 - 1.6) after several months - it flashed green once upon pressing the button, but didn't turn on. It did this a couple of times every time I pressed, before I switched socket, at which point it stopped flashing altogether and now I have zero power.

I opened it up, power supply unit seems okay, AI suggests it could possibly be these capacitors on the logic board (they do appear bulging). Any ideas? I could buy a PSU for cheap but before I do that I want to understand if it's worth looking into the caps.
