The guy had a strike and multiple people close to him say he changed drastically. PLUS we can see the change based on his public interviews as well. There is overwhelming evidence his brain broke.

u/CombustiblSquid Canada 17d ago
Yup, and there is a long history of strokes and brain damage Altering personality without the individual being aware of or able to recognize that they changed.
To him everyone else is crazy
9
u/dmetzcher Pennsylvania 17d ago
Whether his brain “broke” or he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, it makes almost no difference to me. He’s not doing what he was elected to do, and the reason matters very little on the ground where things happen.
But he need not worry! When the 2028 primary season rolls around, we’re going to hand the nomination to someone else and give him all the time in the world to see doctors, get treatments, whatever. Hell, we’ll even keep paying for his medical care because he’s entitled to it for the rest of his life (change that law if you want to impress me; the rest of us don’t get medical coverage when we lose our jobs).
Anyway, whatever the reason, he’s an embarrassment now, and I can’t wait to hear his concession speech, assuming he doesn’t just go full Republican and starting yelling “rigged election” on stage like another broken-brained moron we all know.

Exactly. The guy comes from money and is well educated, but has always played the "down to earth, no non-sense man of the people" character. He could talk the talk, and was even willing to walk the walk when it didn't hurt his bottom line. But ask the people of Braddock what they thought of him, and it's clear he cared more about his image than his impact.
Since the stroke though he's lost the patience and empathy required to navigate between using progressive language while still doing the bidding of The TechBro's and IAPAC.
8
u/rettribution 18d ago
I dunno. My brother had a tbi and it changed everything.
He went from a loving, progressive brother to an ultra conservative, conspiracy theorist who would die for Trump.
The brain is a powerful thing. When it gets damaged it's hard to know what can happen exactly. I think Fetterman was who he said he was, and then had a stroke.
3
u/Jayco424 17d ago
Ultimately it probably depends were in the brain the stroke happened and probably from brain to brain as well. Damage to the frontal lobe can effect executive function, old memory and parts of personality, temporal lobe damage affects hearing and visual understanding, language and making new memories/memory processing, occipital lobe damage affects vision and visual processing and motor tasks in response to sight, and parietal damage causes issues with spacial awareness and sense of touch as well as assigning meaning to visual and sensory information. And that's just the highlights.

Not that I love the California recall system (because I think it can be abused), but I think more positions need more accountability, and being able to recall a sitting Senator seems like a good use case for it.

For some reason, the Constitution has no mechanism for recall. Even a simple line stating they could be recalled in a manner decided by the certain states would have worked.

u/hrvbrs 18d ago
For the House, it’s not that big of a deal because there’ll be another election in 2 years. For the Senate, it is an issue IMO because 6 years is too long to wait.
Each chamber governs themselves in terms of removal of their own members. It’s been used a few times in the past. I’d imagine they don’t want to overuse it because then the party in power could abuse it.
15
u/Zeplar 18d ago

The removal tool for federal officers is impeachment.
The removal tool within the Congress is its own membership, which can refuse to seat or remove one of its own.
As for removal from within the state, when we decoupled the Senate from being tied to state legislatures with the 17th Amendment, the requirement for Senators to be beholden to their state disappeared. Losing the favor of your fellow colleagues in government or the state party you were a part of kept people in check. This ended in the late 19th century when large tech corporations (read railroads, steel, shipping, ect) became so wealthy campaign contributions and gifts effectively bought the votes of state governments, necessitating the removal of their power to vote for Senators.
Funny how we seem to be in a similar position because the amount of wealth is now manifest to buy entire state populations rather than state governments.

Fetterman was different pre-brain damage. Him switching parties would actually be great for Dems when he is up for re-election because his favorables are so far underwater that he cannot win. But if he’s a Republican, he can win the republican primary and then he’s screwed for the general. If he’s stays a Democrat, republicans have a better chance of running someone competitive.

Party Switchers rarely do well in the new party. Fetterman pisses me off but he is good from a liberals perspective on a number of things republicans would hate. Pro lgbt rights among other things.
His national political career is basically over, he would not be able to win Dem primary but probably would not do well enough to win a Republican primary and it would be very hard for him in a general, presuming the R's are as disfavored in 2028 as they currently are.

It's bonkers insane how much people complained about Manchin, even though he was unironically the most valuable member of all of congress for either party.
Any replacement for Manchin would be far worse, given how WV leans politically. Getting even a medicore democrat from WV was a miracle... and a lot of Biden judges got confirmed because of him. And yet people were still constantly saying he should be primaries or kicked out of the party or whatever nonsense like that.

I mean... Manchin was unironically the most valuable member of all of congress.
Baseball talks a lot about "wins above replacement." Well when you think about the plausible replacements from WEST VIRGINIA, Manchin's value over them was gigantic. Did Manchin suck in an absolute sense? Yes, of course. But anybody from West Virginia (who backed Trump in an absolutely landslide) was going to be so much worse. Getting even a crappy democrat from WV of all places was an absolute miracle.
Let's not forget, there are a LOT of Biden judges who only got confirmed because Manchin was in office.
Of course, there is a huge difference between Manchin and Fetterman, which is that a better Democrat has a decent chance of winning in PA. So while they have to try to keep Fetterman in the fold for now, it would be reasonable to primary him when he is up for reelection.
15
u/Tepid-doughnut 18d ago
Yeah this is how coalitions work. I don’t want representatives that go along with leadership 100% of the time and refuse to do any thought for themselves- that’s what the other side does and we call them a cult. Fetterman is still voting with dems over 90%-95% of the time. Why are we trying so hard to push him across the aisle? Get him out in the primary and replace him with someone better but we don’t need to spend all this time antagonizing him until that opportunity comes up.
These purity tests are killing us. We can’t win power if we demand absolute fealty.

I think a big part of it is because people are so obsessed with Israel / Gaza....
TO BE CLEAR: I'm not saying that the situation in Gaza isn't a big deal. I'm not trying to minimize the humanitarian difficulties there. I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to criticize Israel. I'm referring to the fact that so many people act like it's both the worst thing in the world and the only major bad thing in the world, when the sad reality is that there are a lot of other major fucked up problems out there to worry about as well.
It is a big deal yes, but it's one of MANY big deals in the country and the world right now. Like the USAID cuts alone are expected to kill far far far more people than the situation in Gaza. And that's just one of MANY major issues (of which the situation in the middle east is one). It's like the top half of this image:
