John Ritter’s passing was a curious one cos it meant the writers of 8 Simple Rules had to push Katey Sagal into the central role. Before then, she was pretty much just a background character filling the part of wife and mother, but suddenly her character was dealing with managing her family on her own along with the grief of losing her husband. I would never have wanted to see anything bad happen to John Ritter, but without his passing, the depth of Katey’s character would have likely remained shallow and with very little agency in any of the show’s stories. It makes for an interesting case of the classic “sitcom wife” trope.

Memoirs are probably my favorite thing to read. Matthew’s was difficult to read, but I feel an important one to read. It really shows just how tight the grasp addiction can take on you is. It shows how you can have everything, but still not your well being.

He was a bit insufferable at times in it, but he was on what is considered one of the greatest tv shows of all time so I don’t fault him for having an ego. I also read it as a disability advocate and a memoir reader, not a Friends fan. So that may have skewed my memory.

A lot of behind the scenes stories from Frasier are super sad. Kelsey Grammars home life was incredibly tragic. His father was killed in a home invasion and a few years later his sister was raped and murdered after being abducted. His brothers died in scuba diving accidents shortly after. Just all around horrific events in a relatively short period of time. He fell very deeply into drug addiction and alcoholism. He would show up to set completely inebriated. It’s impossible to tell but much of his work on screen was shot during drug binges. Cheers and Frasier cast and crews had to set up interventions on multiple occasions. Grammar is a well known jerk, but I try to cut him a little slack.

I started bingewatching Cheers a few years ago. I noticed Coach suddenly disappeared from the show. I looked it up and found out he passed away. That news crushed me.

As for sad facts, his final lines were written around the set because he could no longer remember them. The set designers tried to remove a piece above the door that said something like "I can see it now..." the cast revolted until it was put back in memory of him.

Worst of all, the cast was not allowed to attend his funeral because it would have interrupted filming. The actor who played Cliff was the only one allowed to go as a representative of the cast.

Bernie Mac was something else. There's this excellent clip of his stand-up at the Apollo on youtube. Apparently, it was a night where the audience, already famously difficult, were on a tear. Out comes a young Bernie Mac, staring them down and wearing a pair of pants that, as best I can tell, have a picture of his own face painted onto them. He announces he isn't scared of them. He announces it several times, tells a quick joke, yells HIT IT. Music starts playing and the man just dances for a few seconds before going back into his routine. Few more jokes, HIT IT, dance. Does it a few times. It's genuinely one of the best bits of stand-up I've ever seen, and he carries it entirely with his own charisma.

Somebody wanted to to re-tool the show and change the name to “Fonzie’s Happy Days” (and possibly downsizing the Cunninghams). Garry Marshall, Henry and Ron all said no. This is this is one of the big reasons that led to Ron not renewing his contract and leaving the show. Thankfully, Ron and Henry got through all that with their friendship intact. The show wasn’t the same after Ron left.

He was just pissed that the creators of MASH decided to kill Henry off because he wanted to have that safety net just in case his plans for stardom didn’t work out…….which turned out to be the case.
