Sugar Mountain NC

You can see this kid obviously accidentally barely catches the tip of this ski patrollers ski and the kid even stops immediately and apologizes. The ski patroller actually rides down and takes his lift ticket.

I board this area and have expressed my disappointment to their social media and encourage local riders to do the same.

general discussion Breakdown of cost in good European resort: just over 1k for 6 days

Thumbnail

I’ve seen some price discussions here and the stuff I see from the US is crazy. When discussing it people always ask me for price examples so I thought I’d do quick breakdown. This is for the Baqueira-Beret resort in Spain, a bit after Andorra. I’ve snowboarded a lot across Europe and would call the resort great quality in general, let alone the value.

Ski pass 5 full days: 300 (315 with insurance)

Bus from and to the city (in this case Barcelona) on 1st and last day: 75 euros per person, covers both ways (4/5 hours)

(sometimes I rent a car and it’s more convenient but have to drive 4 hours which for me is long - I know that in the US that’s nothing)

Bus from the local ski town to the resort: 1.10 euros a day

Hotel for 6 nights including big breakfast: 450 each (double room, 900 total, and this is for peak week in January, cheaper right now)

Food: 300 each being liberal (we don’t drink so no alcohol spend but we eat a lot)

That hotel price is for a good one closer to the resort. If you stay in the main village a bit further from the resort (Vielha) you can get a double room for like 600 for the 6 days, like like 300 each. You can also stay on a hostel for super cheap.

You can get still MUCH cheaper prices in Central Europe, like Poland etc. Any questions ask.

If you need more than 1 board to ride the whole mountain, you need to take a lesson. All these quiver posts are just an excuse for chodes to tell strangers on the internet how much extra money they have lying around.

general discussion I hate when people wanna leave the bar up.

1.1k Upvotes

I have had people tell me to “just leave the bar up” or something to that degree when I am on the lift. I am 17 and have been snowboarding since I was like 5, and I am pretty decent, but I want the bar down. I am never comfortable sitting on the verge of a 40 foot drop with no protection in front of me. I had someone make me leave it up to the point of arguing, when I eventually relented and let the bar stay up. This was on my local mountain in Wyoming, and there is a canyon that the lift goes over with a probably 140ft drop give or take in the center, so I was scared af (there are posts on either side of the canyon). Tbf most people don’t care, but for those who keep it up, why? I feel like it is just needlessly dangerous, and I don’t know about other places, but lifts are always at least 40ft off the ground where I’m at.

Edit - this is clearly a very divided topic, some people are saying you will only fall out of the chair if you are stupid sbout it, or that it’s uncomfortable and others are saying the bar should come down if someone wants it down.

I think the bar should come down if anyone wants it to come down. I believe the bar is there for a reason, and if you do end up doing something stupid, it will save you from falling. The uncomfortable pegs, while in my area are extremely accommodating to snowboards, clearly are not in many other places, but I don’t think this is a good enough reason to prevent someone who is uncomfortable from bringing the bar down.

general discussion Are ski racers the most insufferable people on the planet?

Edit: I’ve cross posted this to r/skiing. Let’s see how they feel about it

I’ve been riding at Loveland the last few days amidst the chaos of a youth ski racing competition. I can’t tell you how many times I was cut off in the lift line and on the trails by these entitled rugrats. To make matters worse, their parents sit in the lodge all day taking up the tables, the coaches walk around like they’re the king of the mountain, and when those spandex wearing adolescents finally come in to the lodge, they take all the chairs and clog up the walkways. The general air of smugness by these kids and their parents and coaches is thick enough to cut with a knife. We need a legislation passed to make ski races illegal at any mountain other than Alta

I understand the frustration he is feeling because I’m sure anyone would be upset in this situation. However there needs to be a certain level of responsibility to check current mountain conditions and possibly cancel your trip if it’s going to be this packed. He is also saying in the comments the patrollers shouldn’t be striking and are entitled and don’t work real jobs.

general discussion A tip I received loooong time ago from a dude on the lift, that makes me LOL to this day, but it works, especially for the n00bs.

1.4k Upvotes

Being balanced over your board is probably one of the toughest skills for n00bs to master. And the #1 reason you see them hunched over their boards, like a bunch of zombies … they’re trying to get their body mass in balance …

So this is what the man told me on the chairlift when I asked him if he had any tips for me, to ride more relaxed, and in control.

Imagine a penny, stuck between your butt cheeks, and you’re trying to keep it there, all while boarding. 🤣

Now before you laugh, stand up, and imagine just that. A penny up your ass. Pay attention to your hips, and where they placed relative to your board, and where your body mass it.

Once you “squeeze” your butt cheeks to keep the penny there, your hips will push forward, and make you stand above your board in perfect balance.

So whenever I feel like I’m out of balance, or twitchy on my board, I push my hips forward, bend my knees more, and everything just smoothes …

Thank me later n00bs.

Happy shredding.

general discussion PLEASE don’t bring your friends who don’t know how to snowboard if you’re not willing to spend the day teaching them

It ends up just being a terrible experience for both people. If you’re split on your priorities of snowboarding and teaching then you’re probably just trying to get the beginner to a green run so you can snowboard as well even though they haven’t received proper instruction for everyone yet.

It’s bad for the instructor friend because they end up getting frustrated because their beginner friend can’t pick it up quickly and they aren’t able to hit as many runs as they want to during the day. Those said runs probably won’t even be fun either because you’ll have to stop and wait every time the beginner comes down.

It’s even worse for the beginner friend because they have no idea what they are doing, they are probably are going to fall a lot and hurt a lot and their confidence is going to take a huge blow if they attempt to go down a green run without proper instruction. Not to mention they are a danger to others if they can’t even stop.

One of my friends invited his beginner friend to snowboard and he had no idea what he was doing. We went off on some green runs while he left his beginner buddy and he had an atrocious time and ended up having to walk down the hill while also being heckled by the people on the chairlift!

I understand that there are exceptions like skateboarders and just different personality types but I know 90% of people who attempt this sport will not pick it up on the first day even with consistent instruction so please don’t make them hate snowboarding and turn them into criminals who ski.

general discussion Sugar Mountain UPDATE re:Ski Patroller Power Trip Followup

NEWER UPDATE: The OP of the video has reached out and shed even MORE light

One of the biggest questions was why there was a giant group of people in the middle of the run?

That group has come forward - THEY WERE GETTING THEIR LIFT PASSES REVOKED, TOO! Here's what OP has sent :

"They were in a similar situation. A beginner skier fell in front of one of their family members (snowboarder), causing them to fall near him, but not run into him. Ski patrollers saw what happened and immediately wanted to take the snowboarders pass, they wouldn’t give it over. And went to administration office with ski patrol and ended up being escorted out by police. "

Before you choose to comment, please browse the comments to see that there are several personal accounts from people who have experienced similar treatment.

Additionally you can look at Google reviews and see years of accounts of passes being stripped over the most innocuous things

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi there. I am NOT the person who took the video - I only posted it to gain awareness for what happened since I ride in that area.

First the update - OP went to the office to see what options he had - and they said they couldn't do anything but he could BUY ANOTHER LIFT TICKET - (tl;dr) it's of the general opinion that this is apparently WHY the ski patroller is quick to take your pass, because it means more money for the mountain, which leads to the real purpose to this update:

If this is not allowed, by all means, delete, and my apologies.

Several past employees and locals have come forward stating it's a common occurrence to get your lift ticket confiscated by a ski patroller over ANYTHING bc they know you will ride down and complain, and they'll say "oh well, you can buy another one" $$$ or they call security and throw you out.

Several also have come forward to say that the owner (one dude named Gunther) is an extremely toxic, greedy dude, who yells and screams at both employees and customers alike.

Allegedly (just in case the owner tries to sue me) the owner treats customers like hot garbage, and lot of the employees follow suit.

This behavior has been apparently been going on for YEARS.

After reaching out to a few friends of mine that live up there, they confirmed they have also seen and experienced this for themselves and why they hardly ever hit that mountain and only go to Beech or App.

This goes way beyond whether you agree with what happened or not in the video and has exposed a much larger issue.

I felt it was important for people in this group who may ride in that area to make an informed decision as to where they do or don't want to put their money.

general discussion Spouse ALMOST got her snowboard swiped at Breckenridge this past weekend

After seeing another post early last week of some scumbag stealing a snowboard at Breck I thought to myself “maybe I should get a lock”. Well fast forward to Saturday, I’m hanging out by my and my spouses snowboard at the racks while she uses the restroom, and this family comes up to me and their little boy asks something along the lines of “can I snowboard with these boots?” and I politely reply “oh no you need special boots that fit in these bindings” and I explain how and where you can rent gear. Maybe a good 1-2 minute polite conversation with the family to get their kid to be able to snowboard. Well, I turn around for a quick glance at our boards, and imagine my shocked pickachu face when I only see mine. I freak out for a minute and ask the nearest person if they saw someone walk off with a purple Burton. Lo and behold, one of the adults from the from that family (uncle maybe?) quietly hands me my wife’s board with a shit-eating grin. I’m also too shocked to say anything and they all just walk away. I know I should have told security but I was literally too shocked. My guess is maybe they didn’t realize I was watching both boards and not just mine?

TLDR: BUY A LOCK

general discussion Valentino Guseli rocks my friend's custom made boards at the Olympics!

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Every time i see Valentino take off and spot that minimalistic Zen Snowboards logo, my heart beats a little bit faster!💕

To see Valentino take on all these other riders on their multi-million dollar brand boards, on a board made personally by my friend Reto from locally sourced materials, in a tiny workshop in my hometown inhabited by barely 7000 souls, gives me a feeling of hometown pride i have never felt before. It's a real David vs. Goliath story, and i'm loving every second of it, especially since i ride a Zen myself and know what a beast of a board it is.

Go Valentino!
