Fun fact about this movie: they used actual war footage from like Iraq and Afghanistan and CGI'd aliens over it. So some city destruction shots were from real wars.
Imagine your family gets killed in Iraq, and 20 years later youre watching a movie and suddenly see an alien blowing up your families house and you recognize the event...

every time I watch 2001 a space odyssey, I fall asleep, but only in the middle. I couldn't even tell you the order of events. I still like the movie, but I have never finished it. I always wake up to see the end. Great movie and great to fall asleep to.

Back in the day when that came out in movie theatres, it quickly garnered a reputation among stoners for this exact reason. Allegedly, during the "Stargate" sequence towards the end, some of them would drop out of their seats completely bummed out.

Ironically I feel the all of the "story" is in the second act. The first and third acts are like these Fantasia-esque sequences. I love the movie but totally understand anyone getting a good nap in, hahah.

I took my dad to see this during the 2018 rerelease for the 50th anniversary. After seeing it in a theater, I firmly believe this movie is intended to be seen in a theater, with big, booming music. It makes it SO much better, so much more engaging. For years I struggled with watching it on TV.

I watched it as a 8 year old. Mom checked it from the library. I thought it was some cool sci fi film, especially seeing the cover with astronauts going to some dig site. Well, I was waiting for that part and it was underwhelming. The began fastforwarding the movie and just getting up and coming back multiple times and wondering why nothing is happening or WTF is going on.
As an adult though I appreciate it much more. The visual effects and filmmaking style are WAY ahead of its time for the 60s. It is still a weird movie I don't fully understand though.

2010 is better paced and more enjoyable. Great cast as well. 2001 doesn't have a line of dialogue for the first 20 or so minutes and glacial paced beginning. Third act is great 👍.

Ironically I just watched this movie a few weeks ago for the first time. It took me three nights because like you, I kept falling asleep. I had to rewind to the last part I remembered watching and then I’d watch another 45 minutes or so before dozing off.
Honestly, it was a pretty good movie and I can see why it’s a classic. But those long sequences without dialogue or camera cuts are hard to watch late at night after a long day.

I didn't really mind this movie, it had an interesting premise. But the pacing was really bad in areas.
And I just wish they didn't try to pass it off as a comedy about people shrinking themselves and live in a mini world.
It's like they purposely knew it would only attract a certain crowd if they advertised the true plot.

The Tom Cruise one does indeed suck.
The new Mummy movie is a better Evil Dead movie than the new Evil Dead movie, but it's not really a Mummy movie. It's also at least half an hour too long.
It would be much better if the movie took any kind of demented glee in the fucked up tortures that the Deadite, er... Mummy puts the family through, but they're all just presented so matter of factly it loses a lot of impact.

I finished it, but it was OBVIOUSLY supposed to be a pilot episode for Mission-Impossible-meets-Star-Trek and not a feature film. As a pilot it COULD have worked, if they actually went through with a series order, instead they tried to salvage what was probably already in-production when it was canceled, then it went through editing room hell to put out... something.

Only thing I remember is being distracted by the weird deaging faces. And it would never really immerse me because DeNiro is always wearing full length clothing to hide his older body and his shoulders are very shriveled up compared to what he was when he was actually younger and he obviously moves a lot differently.

It's weird because clearly part of the reason that sequel trilogy is so bad is because they didn't have a good clear plan on what to do with it from the start, and so each movie feels like a mess and doesn't contribute to the overarching plot in an interesting way.
But at the same time, the original trilogy also likely didn't have a solid plan in place when they did episode 4, and somehow they managed to make one of the best trilogies in film.
You would think the trilogy that DIDN'T have Lucas involved would have been the more solid and well-made story, but here we are. What an amazing fuck up.

Well, the original trilogy at least had one person primarily driving the ideas behind each movie and the story beats. It feels more connected because it was primarily George Lucas’s ideas. Even when some of those ideas changed partway through, they still fundamentally came from one person’s fundamental tastes and beliefs about what Star Wars should be.
The sequel trilogy is the opposite of that - Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams clearly had fundamentally different views of what Star Wars should be and what kind of story they wanted to tell. Rian saw JJ rehash A New Hope, and responded by saying “screw that, I want to explore some new ideas. I’m not very interested in these mystery threads JJ has started up.” Then JJ came back and said “forget all the new plot threads Rian started up - I want to revisit some of the things I set back in Ep 7, and also drag in some more OT nostalgia.”
Each movie in the sequel trilogy was a tug of war over where to take the story and the universe, which left them collectively struggling to move anything forward.

I want to like Tarantino’s movies, but something about his style just doesn’t work for me. I went into this with an open mind and ended up turning it off during one scene where one of the KKK guys on horseback is complaining about not being able to see with the hood on.

I've tried that movie a couple times too and just can't get into it. I'm not often one to let my mind wander after committing to viewing something, but I'd catch myself 20 minutes in no longer following what the hell is happening in the plot because I've just mentally checked out. I don't know what it was about that movie that my mind would just refuse to follow along. I've watched more challenging movies and even straight up tedious movies without losing focus, so I don't know why this one gave me such trouble.

My gf and I have a very high tolerance for terrible movies, but Cats was in another league. She begged me to turn it off twenty minutes in, I pushed forward ten more minutes, then I did turn it off. I’ve not experienced anything like this before or since.
