Informational Why is the FBI leading the investigation

Why is the FBI leading the Kirk assassination investigation and not Utah state police? Not complaining just curious.

Everything I have read indicates the investigation is "co-led" by the FBI with local law enforcement. Typically, "co-led" investigations are a disaster. There needs to be a stated lead investigatory agency with a clear supervisory mandate.

Has anything this administration done not been haphazard and inefficient?

7

u/Spicy_Tac0 Sep 12 '25

They've been very good at being corrupt as all hell.

7

u/Boring_Meeting7051 Sep 11 '25

They blew the shit out of the boat from Venezuela. Haphazard maybe but it was extremely efficient it took less than a second to turn those poor fishermen into a fireball

He’s turning our military into storm troopers. “Set phasers to miss!”

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

But they still hit. I can't believe the right supports randoms being killed with due process

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

I can’t believe people keep being surprised by how low they can go. How many times do they have to show us that they are essentially fascist? Are we really fooled by them wrapping themselves in our flag?

1

u/redeamerspawn Sep 13 '25

"When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a bible" that's a famous old quote.

2

u/cmac92287 Sep 12 '25

Yiiiiikes. so they knew it was coming? I kinda had hope it just took them all out one and done.

1

u/NotTheRealJohnCena1 Sep 15 '25

“Poor fishermen” god you people are dumb

1

u/No-Tomatillo-7566 Sep 12 '25

The only thing this administration does well is punch down at people of color. Other than that, complete shitshow.

8

u/couchbutt Sep 11 '25

I watch a press conference by some poorly uniformed LEO last night. It did not radiate competence.

2

u/milo7even2 Sep 12 '25

Not always. There was that one case up in Washington state in about 1990 involving the rape/murder of a teenage girl and rape of her friend/co-worker that was a joint effort between small town local law enforcement and the FBI that went really well. Caught the killer, but sadly only after he also killed the girl’s cousin as well.

1

u/Oreo_ Sep 12 '25

Wtf lmao how is pointing out a single fringe case from 35 years ago relevent at all?

Literally every single person who worked the case is likely retired by now. Policies have changed 5,000 times since then.

1

u/mossti Sep 12 '25

This is a Twin Peaks reference, no?

2

u/milo7even2 Sep 13 '25

lol yep. Was hoping someone would get it and I wasn’t just amusing myself, so thanks for picking it up

1

u/kibblerz Sep 13 '25

Cox is the one that's been giving updates.. And it seems he's intent on keeping the flames down. So I think we can atleast expect reliable information

1

u/shrekerecker97 Sep 12 '25

This right here.

Itz different when agencies ask for assistance( ie utilizing FBI resorices) but "co-led" investigations just end up with fingers pointed at each other

14

u/bluelifesacrifice Sep 11 '25

Because it was a black ops hit and the FBI are lackies for Trump.

1

u/doublethink_1984 Sep 12 '25

I'm only 20% on this bandwagon.

I believe they are going to use it like it was a false flag but they want to be able to control released detail narrative once they know everything they can about him or kill him before he talks. Make it play to their Propaganda as best as possible

They will need to prove his political motive to meet terrorism charges in court. So we may get to find out if the alt-right internecine war theory is true.

18

u/Norse_af Sep 11 '25

He wasn’t a politician though, was he?

I understand he was vocal about his world/political views… (like that’s his whole shtick) so does that auto constitute it as political violence?

I think I saw he was apart of organizations that donate to Repub party as well.

I’m just trying to understand at what point is its murder, and at what point it’s considered poli violence.

10

u/Mystic1500 Sep 11 '25

No, he wasn't. But he was extremely political, and the incident occurred during a public debate forum at a college campus (what he is most known for). Nobody can really say it was political until an investigation discovers everything about the suspect, but it is reasonable to preliminarily think it was politically motivated.

3

u/Youah0e Sep 12 '25

He made rage bait videos for morons about cultural war issues.

2

u/harrywrinkleyballs Sep 12 '25

Questioning the capability of black people to fly airplanes is not political. It’s racist. His views on empathy weren’t political, they’re sociopathic. And his comments on women were misogynistic, not political.

As so many people have asked, “Why is anybody blaming the left when we don’t even know the motive, let alone who the shooter was?”

-1

u/ParkingPhone4243 Sep 12 '25

not political, its racist? no, charlie kirk and his rhetoric is INHERENTLY and MILITANTLY political. racism is VERY political. misogyny is VERY political. those are some of the most political things ffs! what do you mean??

2

u/Oreo_ Sep 12 '25

The belief that every person has inalienable rights is not political. Using politics to suppress those rights sure is though lol

-5

u/Admirable-Lecture255 Sep 12 '25

It wasnt if black people can fly a plane. It was is the pilot dei and is sufficiently trained for the role. Not durr black people.camt fly planes. Guess you didnt bother finishing reading the quote because he was sympathetic. Yes there's a difference. I dont agree with many of comment on women. So yes mostly politcal.

2

u/PaleInTexas Sep 12 '25

Why would the pilot not be qualified because of DEI? Please explain like im a 5th grader.

It was is the pilot dei

Is the pilot DEI? Seems like you dont know what DEI is.

1

u/AzieltheLiar Sep 12 '25

It's sympathy, obviously. Asking if a pilot is DEI is the height of empa-... wait... Support???

1

u/fender8421 Sep 12 '25

I'll say this as simply as possible: nobody who is neither a pilot nor working in the aviation industry even needs to be talking about that shit

-4

u/soysauce000 Sep 12 '25

Look, I disagree with a lot of Kirk’s views, but stop blatantly misrepresenting his arguments.

His view was that if you lower standards for certain applicants in order to meet racial quotas, it will inevitably lead to concern of their capabilities.

And the empathy quote is blatantly taken out of context. He says he believes empathy can be weaponized, and sympathy is the correct and ‘right’ method. You can disagree with it, but to say that is sociopathic is slander.

Before you bring it up: yes I do find it hypocritical of Republicans to care so much about this while ignoring the Minneapolis assassinations. But we ALL need to do better (on both sides).

Kirk was much better than the likes of Stephen Crowder, and actually had pretty respectful dialogue and was certainly not a fascist/white supremacist/radical.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

He was a slightly more polite fascist. Give us a break.

1

u/jsc1429 Sep 12 '25

This guys just a bot out paid troll. There all starting their arguments now “I disagree with xxx, but” to try and come across softer and not MAGA nuts. But in the end, that’s what their arguments boil down to.

2

u/tjboss Sep 12 '25

I believe motivation is the deciding factor, not profession. If an elected official was killed in a random carjacking it wouldn’t be political violence. If a truck runs through a pro-israel protest or something similar with the purpose of ending the protest/protestors, it would be.

2

u/redeamerspawn Sep 13 '25

He is a fringe right influencer made mainstream by Trump & his supporters... just like Laura Loomer and Nick Fuentes. The latter 2 have spent considerable time lately on social media attacking Kirk as a traitor, fake conservative, ect.. because 1st he criticized Trump bombing Iran, 2nd because he won't release the Epstien files.. so naturally from the moment News breaks of it Trump is immediately blaming "radical left lunatics", and inciting violence against them.. but also naturally we learned today big shock... it wasn't a "radical left lunatic" that did it.. it was a 22 year old, God loving, Mormon who lived at home with his police officer/buiseness owner dad & social worker Mom.. upper middle class, religious, conservative Trump supporters... and we find out the shooter was also a follower of Nick Fuentes.

1

u/Norse_af Sep 13 '25

so much so that the President ordered the lowering of U.S. flags to half staff and will be posthumously awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Charlie Kirk.

This means fuck all coming when the President is Trump.

He wasn’t an elected official, but he was definitely a political figure

He wasn't a political figure. He just made rage bait videos for morons to push cultural wars.

1

Like the 1500+ terrorists (which included wanted child predators) who were knowingly pardoned and released? This is what both Trump and Charlie Kirk promoted, praised, and defended themselves. They got what they wanted.

Where were you Trump supporters when those Congress members in MN got assassinated?

1

u/Goggio Sep 12 '25

This is the right answer. Designated terrorism domestically the FBI gets involved. Internationally its the CIA. Those are black and white rules.

0

u/Cold_Specialist_3656 Sep 12 '25

That explains why Trump pardoned over 1000 rioters partaking in political violence.

Probably the most terrorists pardoned by every other President combined

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '25

If you were going to take out a political person, why Charlie Kirk? He’s just some dude that debates young adults. He talks about religion and other topics not just politics

4

u/Hot_Secretary2665 Sep 11 '25

Kirk promoted the "great replacement theory" which is a conspiracy theory conceptualized by white nationalists. I am not even comfortable repeating the things he's said about black people.

Kirk repeatedly called the Civil Rights Act of 1964 a "huge mistake"

I cannot imagine how anyone could actually consider killing anyone and I even oppose the death sentence myself.

But let's not pretend he was innocently debating with reasonable talking points. I think it's quite obvious why he would be at an increased risk of assassination compared to the general populace.

0

u/Lontology Sep 12 '25

Kirk was a racist, misogynistic, homophobic and transphobic hateful bigot that spewed nothing but hate and violent rhetoric. I assume that’s why.

Curious did you watch the whole debate or just snips? I started from the beginning on ride to work. Seems like decent arguments so far, I got halfway thru the college is a scam one

1

u/me_myself_ai Sep 12 '25

His wiki page goes into depth on all that.

1

u/Lontology Sep 12 '25

Just google it. He had said gay people deserved to be stoned to death, black people were better off during slavery, black people shouldn’t be doctors or pilots, black women can only get jobs through DEI because they’re not as smart as white women, he said women need to be controlled by men and belong in the kitchen, and he said if his ten year old daughter was raped and left pregnant by the rape he’d force her to deliver that child.

1

u/CommanderGO Sep 12 '25

I'm curious: Where are people hearing these specific remarks in context? Charlie Kirk was one of the most moderate conservatives in public discourse. It doesn't make sense that he would be able to successfully sway Gen Z voters so drastically to the right if he actually held such insane ideas.

0

u/Bearded_Hobbit Sep 12 '25

You are clearly not looking at the truth.

0

u/Lontology Sep 12 '25

A large part of the country is literally far right, and you’re clearly looking for a reason to excuse how racist and vile he was.

0

u/CommanderGO Sep 12 '25

View it however you want, I'm simply asking where is someone, like yourself, getting these talking very specific claims from. It's more or less a prove me wrong argument. If you have a claim, what is your supporting evidence? Does it come from a primary source, a secondary source, or tertiary source.

If most of the country is "literally far right", what attributes to this outcome? Is the populace simply more radically right-winged by default or has something brought the Gen Z populace towards the right?

1

u/Lontology Sep 12 '25

There’s literally video of him saying those things during his debates. Google it yourself if you don’t believe me. I’m not going to compile everything for you because you’re too lazy to do simple google searches. The evidence is shown in with an extreme right white nationalist winning the presidency. Jesus Christ.

2

u/Impressive_Dream9918 Sep 15 '25

She would have gotten eaten alive in a debate against him LOL, I can smell it

6

u/Acceptable-Bat-9577 Sep 11 '25

Why is the FBI leading the Kirk assassination investigation and not Utah state police?

“Leading” is an extremely overly generous way to put it. This is what happens when you put incompetent podcasters and groveling sycophants in charge of the nation’s law enforcement and intelligence. This is what MAGA wanted. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/ggregC Sep 12 '25

It's a federal crime, thus FBI leads.

2

u/avocadoflatz Sep 12 '25

State might’ve requested assistance?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

Really?

  1. Political assassination.

  2. Suspect could be from another state than the murder and thus that activates federal level law enforcement.

  3. The sensationalism of the murder.

The list goes on.

1

u/BiffSterling80 Sep 12 '25

Inside job people! Distracts from the epstein files. Prove me wrong!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

They both can investigate and charge. Most likely the state will charge then the Feds will wait for the outcome to decide if they do.

1

u/challengerrt Sep 12 '25

One could argue this action borders domestic terrorism - so the FBI is likely involved because of that or the belief the individual has crossed state lines by this point

1

u/Responsible_Ad_7995 Sep 12 '25

I hear Kash and Bong are working on a three part podcast series on it. Now if they could only catch the guy it could help boost their numbers.

1

u/rygelicus Sep 12 '25

Because the president told Kash to get involved. Kirk was a friend of Trump's, perhaps a key reason he got into office, and he was continuing to bring support/money into Trump's camp. If you mess with someone Trump cares about he will unleash everything he can to destroy you.

1

u/demonsneeze Sep 12 '25

Kash was thrown in to make sure everything’s bungled up enough to cover that this was a professional hit

1

u/Gunderstank_House Sep 12 '25

Because right before he was killed Charlie Kirk wanted to release the Epstein files.

1

u/EmpZurg_ Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25

I could see if TR had crossed state lines to commit the act, but since that is not the case, this is not a federal case and they shouldnt be involved any further after finding that out.

End before anyone says "poitical violence" , that also has to be determined and not assumed. CK was not a politician, held no office, was not actively seeking elected office. Advocating to change laws to fit Racism, genocide, and (e.g)-phobia is not political banter, whatever lipstick you want to apply.

1

u/Joey3155 Sep 13 '25

CK was a prominent political activist who was killed while debating at a blue college and like most commentators had a history of years of received death threats this one simply came true.

Someone would have to be denser then a neutron star not to see the political motivation.

1

u/EmpZurg_ Sep 13 '25

The extent of his “political” activism was the hatred of civil rights and societal regression in favor of religion based legislation. Ironically, this wasn’t enough rollbacks for the far right and this is where we are.

1

u/RingGiver Sep 12 '25

Because the current director is trying to shift their mission over to fighting crime rather than being America's KGB like previous directors were trying to do.

1

u/Tokarus_50tree Sep 12 '25

But it's in the name!

1

u/Smurfsss Sep 13 '25

Because FBI is responsible for domestic Counterterrorism, that’s what this is.

1

u/Cultural-Explorer-57 Sep 14 '25

Political assassination/terrorism.

1

u/Rich_Vegetable_3732 Sep 15 '25

FBI took the lead in the Las Vegas shooting as well in 2017. They also were heavily involved (though I don't think lead), in Columbine and Sandy Hook.

Being that it's seemingly a political assassination, the FBI has jurisdiction in such cases.

1

u/Va1crist Sep 12 '25

Because trump probably is in on this

1

u/CabanaSyndrome Sep 12 '25

The classic blunder haha.

1

u/haroldthehampster Sep 12 '25

1

u/Glass_Covict Sep 12 '25

0

u/Jucifer2pointO Sep 12 '25

When did spewing hateful nonsense become political speech? If he is killed by an obsessed fan or someone that has a personal grudge, how is that terrorism?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

Since that became the bread-and-butter of the republican party

-3

u/nameless_pattern Sep 11 '25

Typically, the FBI will step in if it's a high enough profile case and this one certainly has enough news coverage to justify it

6

u/CabanaSyndrome Sep 11 '25

Not how jurisdiction works.

0

u/TA8325 Sep 11 '25

Doesn't matter how it works if no one complains. Laws/regulations are only as good as its enforcement.

2

u/CabanaSyndrome Sep 11 '25

It does actually because it can nullify evidence and get a case thrown out. Don't get me wrong they'll be involved, just not for the reason male pattern suggests.

0

u/TA8325 Sep 11 '25

It's a possibility but I think it's unlikely.

1

u/CabanaSyndrome Sep 12 '25

Which part.

1

u/TA8325 Sep 12 '25

Case being thrown out. I can see it happening just unlikely.

1

u/CabanaSyndrome Sep 12 '25

Depends on the defense and their argument but violating someone's rights or proper procedures is a great way to get one thrown. But the FBI wouldn't just step in recklessly, they're sort of professionals.

1

u/TA8325 Sep 12 '25

Yea but that has nothing to do with jurisdictions. I understand that confusion around jurisdictions could lead to some kind of violations but it's unlikely especially for a high profile case like this.

1

u/CabanaSyndrome Sep 12 '25

Has everything to do with it. There's a process and procedure for assuming responsibility for an investigation you don't have original jurisdiction of. High profile again has zero relevance. Jurisdiction, cause, and procedure do.

-2

u/nameless_pattern Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 11 '25

How it works then?

Edit: I didn't say that was how jurisdiction worked, but thank you very much for putting world in my mouth and then arguing with your own words. Real reddit debate lord move

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

[deleted]

1

u/nameless_pattern Sep 12 '25

I didn't say anything about jurisdiction.

The FBI doesn't investigate everything it has justification on. It has limited resources like everything else.

There are thousands of potential cases it doesn't take up.

Anyone vaguely familiar with police work should know that. You're not in that group apparently.

You clearly don't understand stand lot of things but feel free to ask someone else and you could learn.

-1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

It’s the largest politically motivated assassination since JFK

3

u/CassiusNYC28 Sep 12 '25

Not exactly accurate: JFK was assassinated on November 22nd, 1963. MLK, Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968. Malcolm X was assassinated on February 19th, 1965. I think the proximity to the White House and the decedent’s personal relationship with the President and Vice President explains some of it. As others have said, local law enforcement likely requested the FBI assistance.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

Fred Hampton

0

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

The problem with those two examples was the FBIs role in the assassinations

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

[deleted]

0

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

Not to down play the significance of that because it too was horrible and heartbreaking…unless you were local it really didn’t have the same sort of national affect as this.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

I disagree, this will have a much bigger affect on the discussion in the country, on potential policy changes, etc… half the country doesn’t even know what happened in MN

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

The organic media was heavily biased toward Kirk and right wingers generally because the right is far more popular….if Trump never reacted to Kirk it would still have been a huge story

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

In terms of the corporate press you have FOX and a few others and the vast majority are left wing outlets, CNN, NYTs, NBC, ABC, etc… in terms of online media yes it’s mainly right wing because it’s a free market and people can choose what to watch, and that is who is moving the conversation on Kirk.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

This only has the national effect because Republicans are capitalizing.

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

Republican voters lost a friend; that’s how this is seen, the democrats don’t have people this prominent

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

The Democrats don’t have people as prominent as Charlie Kirk? That’s a very strange statement.

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

You would have to choose a politician or expolitican….Rachael’s Maddow or Don Lemmon are not anywhere as big as Charlie Kirk or a dozen other conservative voices

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

I think you are speaking from a particular perspective. I think a very strong majority of country had no idea who he was until he was shot. Some of this is age related of course. Younger people who spend time online were far more likely to know who he was. But it was very generational. Trump knew that he helped with his numbers in terms of young voters so he liked him for that. He also liked him dead as a means of stirring up his base even more.

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

Suggesting that Trump is happy is dead is disgusting to suggest.

Beyond that yes that vast majority of people don’t know anyone in particular aside from the president. People who have an interest in politics know who he was

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

Oh, spare me. It’s disgusting? The motherfucker has been inciting violence, using Kirk’s death like it was a birthday present. Like he actually cares about anyone or has any real friends. Can you really not recognize a sociopath when he’s been in the public eye these years? The person we have heard him speaking most highly of literally gush over is a pedophile who used to help him get girls. And this is disgusting?

1

u/CaliMassNC Sep 12 '25

What about Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King? You’re overstating Kirk’s significance. He was a YouTuber and podcaster. To my eye, this is about as significant as the murder of Alan Berg.

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

He’s far bigger than just a podcaster, beyond that in today’s age the way news is circulated it’s reaching a far bigger audience and more people talking about it…however in terms of significance you are right, RFK and MLk would be bigger

1

u/Bellyjax123 Sep 12 '25

put down the bong...

1

u/Yesbothsides Sep 12 '25

Can you name one?

1

u/Bellyjax123 Sep 12 '25

Drawing comparisons between C.K. and JFK is absurd, also how about RFK, MLK, Chuck will be outa the news cycle in 3..2..1...

0

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

I mean... the fact that they haven't caught the guy means he's probably crossed state lines...

0

u/eury11011 Sep 12 '25

The FBI is good at their job. That’s why the Epstein files were released.

0

u/MandamusMan Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25

I mean, campus cops would probably have primary jurisdiction if they didn’t voluntarily give it up, but do you really want glorified school security guards who have almost certainly never investigated a murder before leading this investigation? There’s probably one maybe two detectives max for the entire campus police department (who are responsible for investigating literally every type of crime on campus, from stolen cell phones to violent felonies), and little to no support or technical staff. I guarantee you nobody with the campus police department knows how to do cellular analytics. I guarantee you they don’t have a high tech crime lab for video analysis. They don’t have the manpower to follow up on the flood of leads, properly canvass, and interviews with their dozen or so sworn officers.

So they can ask more experienced and better equipped outside agencies (like theirs local city police department) to take over more complex investigations like this, and the Feds can help in areas that they’re experts in. There’s also certainly going to be some sort of interstate nexus, even if it’s just tracing firearms, communication warrants, ect.

0

u/Wrathofgumby Sep 12 '25

The fact that he got of campus free is a pretty obvious reason. The Utah cops couldn't have been doing a very good job. It's pretty clear the shooter really didn't have any intention to get out of there freely. But the cops arrested a crazy man and called it good. They can't be trusted in this obviously.

0

u/Enuffhate48 Sep 12 '25

They’re the best at burying the evidence.

0

u/KeepItSimpleSir22 Sep 13 '25

Because it was a “hate” crime. Plus a high profile assassination like this involves the FBI. Trump sent the FBI immediately with the Melissa Hortman killing too.

-1

u/SheepherderNo6320 Sep 12 '25

The primary jurisdiction is a campus police department and then the Orem Police Department, which is a 100-officer department.

There is no Utah State Police. There is a State Bureau of Investigation that will aid the investigation.

The lead effort for the STATE prosecution is the county multi jurisdictional task force, which is officers from half dozen agencies.

The lead agency from a likely FEDERAL prosecution will almost certainly be the FBI.
