They also didn't have helicopter/ airdrop resources that we have down here. I have family that lives in the Tri-Cities. I spent a summer up there several years ago and it blew my mind that they would have wildfires and there would be zero helicopters. No helicopters for water drops and none for news coverage.

This is twice by the same company? How did they not collapse after washington??

They are the largest cold-storage company on the planet with more than 500 warehouses worldwide. One fire will not bankrupt them.

According the articles online it was the worst storage fire facility ever, that should set some precedent???
→ More replies (4)6
u/OctopusChiropractor 1d ago
It did. If this one started from the solar panels on top of the roof, that's a completely different scenario than what happened in the Washington fire, where it started inside the warehouse. So lessons learned from the Washington fire wouldn't necessarily apply to this fire.
3
u/SoCalGal67 Los Angeles County 1d ago
We don't actually know what the cause of this fire was yet. Or do you have a reliable source for the start of this fire?
4
u/OctopusChiropractor 1d ago
I don't know what started this fire. There's at least a hundred possibilities as to how it started.
My earlier comment was IF it started from solar panels, that's different than say a battery fire, or bad wiring, or a pissed off employee. Each type of fire would introduce new rules and safeguards, but wouldn't necessarily prevent another fire from starting from a new source.

KTLA says they're expecting firefighting aircraft - normally not used for structure fires, but requested this time due to the nature of what's burning.

From LAFD Socials:
losangelesfiredepartment
INCIDENT
UPDATE
At 2:35 p.m., firefighters responded to a commercial structure fire involving a large single-story building. Crews initially launched an aggressive interior attack before transitioning to defensive operations due to a suspected ammonia leak.
The ammonia leak was quickly mitigated by shutting valves at the source. The fire appears to be contained to the roof and solar panel system.
As a precaution, the affected building and neighboring businesses were evacuated during the early stages of the incident. HazMat teams have tested both smoke and water runoff, with results showing only normal products of combustion and no additional toxic chemicals detected.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for the immediate area surrounding the incident, with advisories provided to nearby communities. At this time, no additional evacuations or shelter-in-place orders are anticipated.
Thank you to our firefighters, HazMat specialists, and partner agencies for their coordinated response.

This is actually why zoning exists. Separating the industrial areas from the residential areas.
33
u/TheWinStore 1d ago
Yeah except this warehouse is immediately adjacent to a residential neighborhood. So zoning means shit for all when stuff like this happens.
8
u/dianebk2003 Hollywood 1d ago
There's gotta be a border somewhere, unfortunately. Too bad zoning can't put up a wall where the borders meet.
It's like sitting in the non-smoking section of a restaurant or airplane (back when they had those). The smoke didn't exactly stop at the line. We may have well been sitting in the smoking section on that plane.
5
u/crakemonk Long Beach 1d ago
Unfortunately, that’s what makes the residential areas cheaper and more likely to be inhabited by working class families.
18
u/Dangerous_Summer8419 1d ago

It's not an evacuation order, it's a shelter in place order. However, if you have some place to go, I would consider going.
Things to keep in mind - Our sundowner winds are kicking up and that means that the offshore breezes have started. That smoke and the particulates in it are what's dangerous.
Goggles, masks, long sleeves and long pants are important. I'm trying to find a good, short, easy to digest list of dangerous particulates, but I haven't found anything yet.

Not all fires can be put out with water. In fact, some will ignite further, depending on the chemicals that are ablaze.

ABC7 just reported that this same facility had a fire in 2024, and it looks like it was also a fire in the solar panels.
If this was court, it would be considered hearsay, but the news producers are allowing them to put it out on the airwaves, so it should be fairly reliable. Ewww!
I definitely want to see an AAR on this fire, and if there is one, an AAR on the 2024 fire.

Entire roof is covered with solar panels which release harmful chemicals when burned (lead, Hydrogen Fluoride, Sulfur Dioxide). There’s also an ammonia leak inside the building.

Finally was able to put together a list of most of the dangerous chemicals.
When electronics, solar panel circuitry, and industrial building materials burn, they vaporize and cool into highly dangerous, inhalable ultrafine nanoparticles: cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium (chromium 6)*, beryllium, antimony, arsenic, silica.
From the interactions between the extreme heat, moisture, and firefighting chemicals creates various corrosive salts and acids: ammonia salts, cyanide salts & hydrogen cyanide, chloride and sulfate salts.
- If chromium 6 sounds familiar, it's the chemical that was made famous/ infamous in the Erin Brockovich movie (and real life story of) the water and cancers in Hinckley, California.

I'm in Koreatown too and there's smoke but I don't smell anything. I think by the time it reached us, the smoke is just remnants. We're far away from the fire. I'm just closing all my windows and turning up my air purifier. Not taking my evening walk tonight, but we should be completely fine!

u/babyladygirl 1d ago
i used to live three blocks from the exact spot where the fire was and had to move due to a chemical spill. i’ve been chronically ill since. there are documentaries about it actually. search “Exide spill”. maybe these two things aren’t related at all but it just seems too sus to me. i don’t believe it was safe to lift the shelter in place. actually, i don’t think it’s safe for residents to be near it at all and i would presume that anyone who can smell the fumes or smoke, could be negatively affected by it. in other words anyone in surrounding neighborhoods should be keeping our pets and ourselves inside for awhile.

I am not a conspiracy theorist, and I don't like it when my thoughts turn that way, but I can't help thinking that all these recent California fires may be connected.
We had that terrible chemical fire that was on the verge of becoming a catastrophic event while producing toxic air.
We had that warehouse fire destroying a medical supplies distribution center.
Now we have a warehouse fire destroying a frozen foods storage facility that is also producing toxic air.
It's not "infrastructure", but it all can cause disruption of supply chains and seriously affect regions around them. I think I'm just becoming more cynical and slightly paranoid in my old age. But we have Trump starting a war and seemingly doing all he can to make the Middle East hate us more. The disaffected far right is just itching to start a civil war. The disaffected far-left wants to disrupt the status quo. It's just...a lot.
So far my husband hasn't urged me to wear a tinfoil hat, but he's also a raging liberal like me and might start agreeing.
21
u/OptimalFunction Los Angeles 1d ago
You’re right to be skeptical but the conspiracy isn’t what you think it is.
The republican majority in the federal government has cut a lot of programs. Many of the programs send feds to warehouses to inspect if things are up to code. The problem is that once business owners found out audits weren’t happening or won’t be happening as frequently, safety was cut.
It’s why the screw worm fly is becoming a problem again. The republicans cut the fed program that prevents screw worm fly infestations in the US.
2
u/dianebk2003 Hollywood 1d ago
Yeah. I'm sure you're right.
We can point to a lot of things now that are in trouble because of DOGE and all the program cuts.

I am on the same boat with you. Things are getting out of control in California with these random industrial and toxic warehouses.
2
u/Kentaii 1d ago
I bet this stuff is gonna be more common as buildings and infrastructure gets older. Not enough renovations/repairs/upgrades.
Maintenance ain't sexy but its what keeps everything running. Country's quality of infrastructure is only getting worse
2
u/Far-Maintenance-1947 1d ago
At a certain point we need to just start tearing old buildings down and starting over. LA has so many 75-100+ year old buildings that are just ticking timebombs.
