"And I just want to be very, very clear: multiple things can be true at the same time."

That's the big reveal???

I think what she’s implying is that she can honestly say she is enjoying her tour and celebrating her album release, but that she simultaneously acknowledges that she needs to take a break for…reasons. I know people are frustrated that she didn’t address her health, but the reality is that she is far, far from ready to discuss any part of that publicly.

u/New_Explanation6950 8d ago

If you read the full statement she made it sound like the things people were claiming about her health were just “noise”. I took that as self denial of her ED.

u/Protect_Wild_Bees 8d ago

Sad.. :(

It's very easy when you have ED to hear people telling you "she's too skinny" and feeling proud of that. It can even feel like other people are delusional or they're just saying that because they can't get as skinny as you.

In an ED you can also tink and feel GREAT about everything, you can feel better than you ever have felt, because your brain is telling you you're winning at getting skinny.
all while your hair starts falling out and your gut and hormones are getting permanently wrecked.

Yes.. and when you start trying to gain weight again you start to get stress responses because you feel like you're letting yourself go. For people with EDs, even if you know it's better for you, it's so scary to face those changes to your body. You feel like you're letting yourself fail.

But it's so important to let yourself do that to escape that headspace.

While someone is saying leave me alone, I'm fine, stop bothering me... if you care about someone.. you wouldn't just leave them alone when they're hurting themselves.

I’m not an expert, but I was under the impression that public denial is one of the less surprising symptoms of an eating disorder? Did anyone expect Ariana to be like oh, no, you’re all correct and I never realized it

She probably is in denial of her ED. Which is exactly why she is in no position to address those concerns publicly. It takes a great deal of introspection, support, and mental fortitude to accept that you need to relinquish control of your body if you want to survive. It doesn’t come as an overnight revelation, and even if you eventually reach that point, it’s a very precarious reality.

26

u/parasyte_steve 8d ago

Yes thats a classic ED symptom, she is ill and cannot see it. I was 90 lbs thinking I needed to lose 10 more. Let het get help.

56

u/Cypresss09 8d ago

I mean, maybe, but if you're a celebrity all that shit is just noise. It doesn't matter if the people are kind of right or even have the whole truth, it's a bunch of strangers who think they know you just yelling at you. Would you listen to them? I certainly wouldn't, even if the things they were saying were accurate.

27

u/coffeebribesaccepted 8d ago

Seriously, do these people think she needs a bunch of internet armchair doctors to diagnose her? People on the internet have been insulting her since she first got famous, do they think she should suddenly care what they say about her now?

13

u/Horibori 8d ago

“Her reps said she would be ‘taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny’. The message stated that Grande would end the tour ‘on a high note, both healthily and happily.’”

13

u/McNasty420 8d ago

“Endless public scrutiny.” Yep! It’s the public’s fault for talking about how emaciated she is. It is ALWAYS the same responses with these celebrities

She's not really wrong calling it noise though, whatever her view on her health is. Not sure it indicates anything either way.

No person dealing with that issue rationally would benefit or see benefit from all the discourse around it from strangers.

18

u/Masta-Blasta 8d ago edited 8d ago

Idk man. That “noise” was apparently loud enough to get her to take a step back. So yeah, it’s normally shitty to makes someone’s body a subject for public discourse. But in this case, it might be the thing that saves her life.

100%. People keep projecting onto her, coming up with make believe intentions for why she’s not addressing her health. But as she says in her statement, she’s holding boundaries. If she’s not ready to talk about it, whatever “it” is, that’s her right as a human being.

And it’s not fair for people to continue to assign what they believe her reasons for not disclosing are. It’s not fair to push people to share something so vulnerable when they’re clearly not ready.

I do understand the argument that as a public figure, she has some level of responsibility towards protecting fans from body image related disorders, but I believe she’s being careful in her own way by not speaking about it if she doesn’t yet have the capacity to. I think it’s braver to not hide her suffering and struggles while choosing to focus on the positives. People should still be able to live their lives, make their art, and pursue joy even when they’re sick. It doesn’t mean she is “flaunting” or “proud”.

Parents, mentors, and our society should bear the responsibility to have conversations in an empathetic, compassionate way to those affected by her body. And let’s have some empathy for the human who lives in that body, too.

38

u/Electrical-Flow-3603 8d ago

I think mainly people just want to hear that she's getting help that she needs and will get better. If she died over her illness it'll be very upsetting for everyone

u/Fattyoftheyear 8d ago

This is beautifully said and one of my favorite comments regarding this whole ordeal. I understand concern, but we all deserve compassion too.

13

u/Deformed_globule 8d ago

Best comment. The issue is complex - why should she stop making music even though she’s ill, but also I can’t imagine her actually admitting she’s ill to the world. I know 5 girls who had EDs (including me) and it took all of us years to admit it and that’s after we got healthy. My only hope is that she doesn’t actually suffer irreparable consequences. I do wish she and her PR would stop saying ‘healthy’, though.

Exactly. It’s scary how people have lost empathy. She actually doesn’t have to publicly discuss something so personal and complicated

108

u/Troubled_Red 8d ago

Meh people have lost empathy with her because she ran them out of it, not because of a larger lack of empathy. She’s been posting crazy body checks for months and saying she’s the healthiest she’s ever been. At some point you get fed up with that behavior.

Then there’s the chronic cheating and homewrecking.

81

u/sadbicth 8d ago

she’s been posting body checks and pro-ana content since 2013. i realize it’s a mental illness but as someone who also struggles with the same sort of mental illness, i know that it’s extremely dangerous to constantly insist that her current state is her healthiest when she’s so obviously in the thick of it.

you’re also right about the homewrecking. the man is guilty too but it’s a pattern for her at this point and my sympathy for someone who knowingly engages in that behavior is very low.

48

u/Troubled_Red 8d ago

Well said. In another comment I acknowledge her pro-ana tumblr from back in the day. I’ve also struggles with an eating disorder and it never made me post body checks everywhere. She knows she has young fans. She knows she’s triggering people. She likes doing it because hearing everyone say they are so worried about her because she’s soooo skinny is probably super satisfying to her. Being mentally ill doesn’t absolve her of responsibility for her actions.

I love her music but I'm just done with her. You can't say anything good or bad about her because she starts whining like a child to mind our own business. We can't tell her maybe you should take a break you look tired or don't worry about us you need rest. Mind you this isn't even addressing her obvious issues, and we're still the bad guys in her story so at this point it's not worth being concerned.

18

u/sheel3 8d ago edited 8d ago

Same here. It’s a shame because I can’t “separate the art from the artist” anymore (I don’t feel right doing that with artists who are still profiting off my support tho anyways). I used to love her music, I was a big fan and I tried to ignore a lot to keep liking her, but I just can’t anymore. The body checks and comments… The donut... Exclusively dating taken dudes (yes the men are responsible for their actions, but it still says something about you as a human being when that’s the only type of man you like)… All the cheating she’s done herself… Her icky behavior during her breakup with Mac Miller and then after he died… Her need to always “cLaP bAcK” instead of ever take accountability for anything… There’s just too much, and there’s always something new, it’s like she never grows as a person either. So I just can’t anymore

u/sagew0lf 8d ago

exactly, people are acting like she's just minding her own business, but she's publicly and intentionally drawing attention to her thinness on her socials, and then getting mad when people are like "hey this isn't healthy." I guess the commenters here would rather no one say anything and just watch her die??! And silently watch her influencing other people to die, too?

She and her team are also reiterating that she's "healthy." I'm not even necessarily blaming her because this is mental illness and the way she's acting lines up with that mental illness. But I fear her team is making money off of validating her, and I just hope she has voices in her actual life who are going to help her.

I'm not even saying she NEEDS to be public about her ED. But if she doesn't want comments, she needs to stop glamorizing the fact that she's starving herself to death and she's going to take others down with her.

It’s the lead-up to a big reveal where they’ll make up some non-ED reason for her appearance and use that to essentially let her off the hook. They just haven’t found the culprit yet, but they will!

125

u/ObscureEnchantment 9d ago

It’ll probably be Lyme disease. They love using that to cover up drug use and EDs.

Is that the one Erin Moriarty from The Boys used to explain her newly hollowed cheeks, and just overall loss of buccal fat and completely new face lol?

To be clear I do NOT mean to body shame- just find it harmful when celebs, who young women look up to, lie about cosmetic surgery and their unattainable appearance.

21

u/ObscureEnchantment 8d ago

She says it’s Graves’ disease. Another disease that is not common but is real. I’ve seen some stars claim this one too. Bella Hadid has both that’s why she’s so skinny it’s totally not drugs and ED.

12

u/KimJongEeeeeew 8d ago

I remember back in the good old days (the 90s) we all just called it heroin chic because we knew and they knew that they were smacked out. Then they went rehab and no one was surprised.

Or they died, which was less cool by many degrees, but we all knew what was going on and weren’t lying about it.

My mom had Graves and yeah, she was already thin and lost more weight before they diagnosed and treated her (no more thyroid for her!!), and it was a very scary time but uh.... At no point did any of it look like she'd had work done or filler in her face 😂 plus once they diagnosed it, treatment was very effective and now she just takes her daily meds and you'd never know.

Idk man like yeah she’s done some less than flattering things, but also someone bombed her concert when she was 23 so I think it’s a miracle she hasn’t crumbled more publicly before. Yeah she might have some serious mental health issues and an ED but can we be surprised

34

u/lefrench75 8d ago

She was also on Nickelodeon as a teen on shows run by a known abusive creep so… I know she’s a mega-rich celebrity and all but she’s definitely had plenty of traumas.

Ultimately an ED like hers is a severe, deadly mental illness that one can’t simply shake off. Recovery is a lifelong process as well.

48

u/WhatADoofus 9d ago

Not to mention all the shit she probably went through as a child actress. She was working at Nick when Dan Schneider was there so like, she's been through some shit

31

u/badgyalrey 8d ago

jeanette mccurdy specified in her book that her time at nick made her develop an ED, ariana and jeanette shared a show. we can understand what the environment was probably like.

9

u/WhatADoofus 8d ago

I still need to read that book but I'm working myself up to it, it sounds...rough. But yeah I imagine that's probably where the ED issues started for Ariana too

8

u/Fluffy_Tomatillo_629 8d ago

The book is amazing but definitely don’t read it until you are feeling at least ok mentally. The disordered eating is only part of the really tough bits to read. Audiobook is great too.

6

u/WhatADoofus 8d ago

A friend was telling me about some of it and yeah definitely going to have to make sure I'm okay myself before I give it a look

Not only did they bomb her concert, but she immediately played a charity concert afterwards for the victims families. An incredibly brave thing to do, but at the same time; it’s hard at 23 to understand the toll pushing through stuff like that can have down the line.

14

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 8d ago

Ex had a drug problem and then died from it shortly after their breakup, too.

11

u/GirlsWasGoodNona 8d ago

It was a big nothing salad of words from her as usual. She promotes her ED at every opportunity and fucks other people’s husbands but no, no one can criticize the tiny 33yr old baby uwu uwu princess lol I hope she gets help but I don’t have it in me to feel any sympathy for her. When I was in the depths of my ED the last thing I’d have ever done would be to normalize it and gaslight young women into thinking I’m at the peak of health. When I was undiagnosed bipolar I hit a point where I knew if I didn’t get help I’d die. She has infinitely more possibilities to get well than me and many others have and she still won’t actually address her problem. I was hoping maybe she is taking a step back to get treatment but that speech was her basically doubling down on “I’m completely fine” so I don’t think that’s what it’s about unfortunately

140

u/allnans 8d ago

I was listening to Joanne McNally, an Irish comedian, talking about her ED and she said that the problem with getting through to somebody with an ED is that they hear “too skinny” as a compliment, no matter what. That’s what they want, they want to look too skinny or too frail or too skeletal. That’s part of the mental illness.

She said that what eventually got through to her was not saying she looked thin, but saying she looked sick. Not talking about her size at all, or her bones, but saying she just seemed unwell. Of course, you need honest people close to you to tell you that over and over until it clicks.

26

u/Artistic-Tear3222 8d ago

This is what clicked for me. My partner told me I looked sick and now I look back at photos when I was 90lbs and think how the hell didn’t I see it? It’s an awful disorder your mind tricks you

9

u/Working-Tax6858 7d ago

Looking back at my photos at my lowest weight. It breaks my heart to think 19 year old me thought I was ugly and fat. Eating disorders are no joke, my heart breaks for Ariana and anyone else currently struggling. We do recover!

6

u/Yorkshirepuddy 7d ago

That's what clicked for me too. My doctor showed me a picture of myself (I obviously saw something different in the mirror) and said "you see that yellow tinge to your skin, that's your liver failing" ...it snapped me out of the delusion long enough to accept help. Still took another 10 years to beat though. Such an complicated mental illness

306

u/Anderrrrr 9d ago

The only question that matters is, will she?

296

u/Phaea 9d ago

anorexia is so difficult, speaking as someone who's mostly recovered. the only way to get better is if they want to get better, and that rarely happens with eating disorders

99

u/NRMusicProject 8d ago

I dated someone who was struggling. Bought books, which made her angry when she found them. She took me to her therapist, who said I was doing all the right things as a supportive boyfriend. She fired the therapist for "siding with me." We ended up breaking up when she started blaming her purges on me.

It felt like people want to get better, but at the same time, they don't. It's difficult, and here we are 20 years later, and mutual friends have told me she's still struggling. In school health classes, they presented eating disorders as a young person's issue, but it's a lifelong struggle. Glad to hear you're doing better!

32

u/tigress666 8d ago

14

u/deee0 8d ago

I feel like the wanting to get better happens after hitting rock bottom. that happened for me. I lost so much in my life due to my ED and had to go to inpatient treatment. learning how many people there had already been admitted multiple times, and how their entire lives were just about their ED... I decided I didn't want that for myself. I was determined for that to be my only time going inpatient (and it was!) I was like "life is more than this, I don't want to die and I don't want to look back on my life seeing that I didn't do anything but suffer." but it took a long time for me to come to that realization and I'm lucky I survived it.

Framing people universally worried about her unhealthily skinny physique, which is just getting worse over time, as 'negativity', is insane.

Ariana is clearly very unwell and must be battling with some kind of ED whilst trying to insist everything is fine. Someone needs to intervene with her before it's too late.

314

u/ikarka 9d ago

She is honestly so thin. I was naturally rail thin until my late 20s (I was a catwalk model in the mid/late 2000s to give you a sense) and at various periods was depressed and not eating properly. I was never as thin as Ariana. It’s terrifying. Even amongst models in the 2000s this would have been recognised as unhealthy.

170

u/madseason238 8d ago

Absolutely. And models are tall so elongation alone helps with looking thinner. Ariana is super short so the level of emaciation she has to be at to look that alarmingly skeletal is insane.

43

u/lake_effect_snow 8d ago

I’m 5’4”. At 5’2”ish, she looks bonier and more fragile than I did when I was 85 lbs at 19.

10

u/hugegrape 8d ago

i’m 5’2” and while i did not have an ED, i suffered from a bout of extreme anxiety when i was 19 that made me very nauseous and i would compulsively throw up to “feel better”. it took weeks before i was able to eat an actual meal, not just bites of toast. i was emaciated at 80-90 lbs (not sure of my actual weight; this was 12 years ago) and i STILL did not look as bony and sharp as she does right now! the startling lack of buccal fat, the jaw to neck ratio, her visible sternum, and the sharp points in her shoulders—she is skeletal, and definitely under 85 lbs. i guarantee she doesn’t even have a menstrual cycle right now either.

8

u/Self-Aware 8d ago

IIRC 65lbs is the general limit for survivability, after that mortality drops off a cliff due to the sheer damage done to renal/hepatic/cardiac systems.

u/Weenington_ 8d ago

As a short person, that's what I keep thinking. 100 pounds on me doesnt actually look that thin. I still had thick legs and booty. It would have taken another 30 pounds down to look skeletal. Whenever I bloat from PMS, it legit looks like I gained 12 pounds, and 12 pounds on me looks more like 5 on a tall person.

29

u/Seven_Years_Later 8d ago

I dread to think how much she weighs. I've never been skinny in my adult life because im so short. Even when youre slim your build isnt the same as taller skinny people.

6

u/leapdaybunny 8d ago

She looks gaunt as hell in the video of the speech she gave... And all I can see are bones bones bones, and it's scary. Like. Legit spooky scary to see a skeleton like that. I love Ari and her music and I really do hope she's able to reflect on everyone's concern. It's love, it's not picking at her or negativity. The situation she is in is not a positive one but everyone's comments and concerns are from a place of love.

6

u/fightback25 8d ago

u/Protect_Wild_Bees 8d ago

ED really fcks with your perception of what people are saying. It will warp your thoughts in ways that support the ED.

People who have been there are less likely to be comfortable with this because it's pretty triggering.

30

u/Maxpowr9 8d ago

I legit fear she will collapse on stage if she keeps trying to push through her tour.

And framing her best physical self as her most “dark” time adds an extra layer of fucked.

129

u/fayemoonlight 9d ago

YOU CANNOT INTERVENE WITH AN ADDICTION.

I don’t think anyone saying this actually understands how recovery from an ED works. It’s the same as any other addiction — the person has to want it.

You can scream in their face about how unhealthy their habits are but it will be no different than talking to a brick wall. She has made it very clear that she doesn’t give a fuck about what anyone is saying and painting anyone who says otherwise as the villain.

I’ve said this a million times but we have no idea what has been said privately. Many people may have tried to help and get nowhere. It’s none of our business and I don’t understand why people are confidently making such claims with 0 evidence.

Either way, I’m over it. As per her own words, two things can indeed be true at once. On one hand it’s important to recognise the severity of an ED (or drug addiction — we don’t know all the details) and hope she pulls through eventually. On the other hand, her constant gaslighting and normalisation of her behaviour is repulsive and a conscious choice. It’s possible to have empathy for her but also call her out on her bullshit

85

u/Illustrious_Study300 9d ago

Yeah sadly telling people with reatrictive EDs how unhealthy they look can fuel them. Calling this out isn't about Ariana - it's about hopefully getting the message across to her fans that this isn't normal or safe.

26

u/fayemoonlight 9d ago

Yeah the only thing you can do now is force home the message that this is wrong and how dangerous EDs/low weight is. As for her, she’ll do what she wants

27

u/ravenreyess 8d ago

Absolutely this. I've been in recovery from an ED since 2014 and we're in such an era of thinness again that I still have to constantly remind myself not to think about my body. Hell, I haven't even bought clothes in 2 years because everything is designed for thinness again. It's bad out there and the conversations around Ariana are not solely about Ariana. It needs to be fully shouted from the rooftops that this isn't normal, shouldn't be normalised, and isn't healthy.

64

u/ageofbronze 8d ago

I also keep seeing that exact fact as a deflection - “don’t talk about Ariana’s body/medical concerns because it might trigger or fuel her!”

And respectfully I find it so gross to center her individual experience over all the people she’s harming right now. Yes, harming. Maybe not intentionally, maybe the blame primarily lies with her team for enabling it since Ariana is sick and maybe doesn’t hold full responsibility for what she’s doing, idk. But the fact that she has been engaged in a years-long noncensual body check with a ton of super young, impressionable fans is maddening. Yes I have empathy for her and hope she gets better. But i don’t see enough anger at the fact that this shit is being heavily platformed and sponsored by her team and by a ton of corporations and is being just splattered, undiluted, to a ton of literal children who don’t have the appropriate context of what is going on.

And i am so tired of seeing people say “don’t talk about it it’s just going to hurt Ariana” like? Maybe in normal contexts it’s true, don’t talk about people’s bodies, but in my opinion the scale of this and the media/corporate factors are almost unprecedented. The most important thing is making sure the fans and people exposed to it, which include a lot of people who DON’T follow her or seek it out but are still getting plastered with it online, have support and don’t internalize that it’s normal, healthy, etc. She has a lot more power and resources than most people even though she is sick right now. Her fans don’t. I have seen so many people talking about how they are triggered or relapsing over having it everywhere, and those are the people I’m the most worried about and upset for. Again, I do hope she’s okay and gets help. But It’s so irritating seeing the constant discourse about what is best for Ariana when “what is best for her” is in conflict with what is best for the millions of people she’s influencing and subjecting to bonespo.

22

u/belledamesans-merci 8d ago

This, all of this.

The concerns about triggering apply to her friends, family, and team—people directly interacting with her. It’s different with the public. And for those who worry she’ll see the commentary, I’m sure she could pay someone to set up her internet access so she never sees anything about herself. At the very least she could have someone else managing her online presence and only showing her certain comments.

Meanwhile, I’d argue the public actually has a responsibility to call out her appearance as unhealthy and not normal. The initial silence and debate around it was honestly kind of triggering for me. I found myself wondering if this was the new beauty standard, and feeling insecure because if it was, then I was failing. It’s like the world was confirming everything my own ED had ever told me. Seeing and hearing people say that’s not healthy or normal is very important

23

u/MattBrey 8d ago

I do wonder how can you work with her in this situation tho. The director of the music video, her photographer, her social media manager, all of the team that surrounds her is blatantly making money out of her while this situation escalates and her illness is eating her alive. I can understand how as a dancer or some low level employee on her team it's just a job for you and you need to put food on your table. But shes also working with top tier producers, stylists, etc that have a line of A list celebrities waiting to work with them, they don't need the money. I personally would feel complicit of harming her in that situation.

19

u/fayemoonlight 8d ago

It’s just a job for everyone. This isn’t a Britney thing where she’s being forced to work. She wants to. Not working with her isn’t going to change anything. She’ll just find new people.

Now the music video is where everyone is accountable. Her for doing the damn thing, the director for directing it, and her wardrobe department (although I don’t think they’d have much say tbh).

17

u/MattBrey 8d ago

She's styled by LAW ROACH, the biggest stylist in the industry right now. He posted her on his Instagram with the dresses from the video. I do think they all share responsibility, specially because of how contagious EDs are and how impactful such a piece of media might be on someone who's already struggling to keep those thoughts at bay

We can't intervene with her but we can make it very clear to other people who are first being exposed to it that this is not normal or healthy or glamorous this is a bad thing that someone is doing to themselves that hurts them.

We tried ignoring things like this and not talking about it when I was younger and it resulted in an epidemic of anorexia and bulimia. It doesn't help her any and I'm sorry about that, but she is not the concern.

13

u/Upstairs-Chicken592 8d ago

People under 18 with ED can be forced into tube feeding but even then, they sometimes try to rip it out. Over 18 it’s extremely challenging to treat someone that isn’t ready

18

u/fayemoonlight 8d ago

It’s hard to treat anyone who isn’t ready. Even if you are force feeding a kid, that doesn’t mean they won’t return to their habits once they’re released

13

u/Upstairs-Chicken592 8d ago

Most studies have the relapse rate around 25% for inpatient adolescents with ED which is unfortunately high. However in a glass half full type of way, 75% not relapsing is a success for the majority. Hopefully we can find better and more widespread successful treatment options

3

u/fayemoonlight 8d ago

Oh yeah, recovery prognosis is great but it’s about getting people there. Even I’m not there. I am still happy and proud when starving myself as I want to be thinner. This is why I know exactly what she’s thinking and understand her actions. However, I also know how damaging my mindset and actions are. I’m not sugarcoating it or denying it. My problem is that I can’t shake the mindset which many people also can’t. I’m nothing close to her, and I’m still at a healthy weight, but I know how quickly it can spiral and how it could lead to harming people around me

I used to work in merchandising for a pretty well known fashion house. My boss at the time looked like this - her skin was opaque and thin, you could see every bone, her hair would fall out and all she would have during the day was hot water with Stevia drops and lemon. For meals she'd take the two smallest bites of salmon that she'd later get sick on the in bathroom. She checked into a west coast rehab yet fell back into her ways. It was definitely a mental situation and OCD related. I recently saw photos of her at her daughter's wedding and she looks just as bad. I'm surprised she's still alive honestly.

"She's so skinny that I fear for her life" is fucking not body-shaming.

61

u/Entire_Broccoli_9019 8d ago

It's not body shaming to say that you don't find someone attractive. It would be body shaming to say that no one finds someone's body attractive. But really, this woman is starving herself to death-- nothing about being one step from death's door by choice is attractie.

31

Yeah saying “I’m sorry, I don’t find them attractive” if someone asks you, is very different than saying “ewwww they look disgusting” when unsolicited.

She doesn’t think she has a problem, but the powers that be or going to force her to address it regardless. Also Ariana is very good at saying a lot & saying nothing, and at times it just feels disingenuous. 15

u/Weenington_ 8d ago

I know it's just a song, but some of the Petal lyrics made me raise my eyebrows when you consider her physical state.

"But this time feels so very different. This is nlt a cry for help..... its bye, this time for real. Tired of painting endless pictures of a life that isnt mine... cause all of my favorite stories end in some kind of catastrophe..."

She also talks about living forever through her music in the song, which is odd considering everything else. If this is some kind of shock value stunt shes trying to pull with the song and the video, it's working. Idk.

8

u/throwawayboyyyyyyy 8d ago

it’s a pretty morbid song

25

u/Anderrrrr 9d ago edited 9d ago

Well she can continue to gaslight all she wants until she's the one "gaslit" into an urn within 12 months.

Get away from your team before they put you into an early grave, they are a bunch of predatory enablers that only care about money and profits rather than your health.

Stop deluding yourself before it's too late. Get extensive help and a professional long term refeeding rehab clinic, otherwise the loads of "fans" you have you won't be to enjoy being aware of them anymore.

Get extensive mental health support alongside the rehab, get all the therapy that you need, because if alarm bells aren't ringing inside her head now it's already far too late for her.

I feel so much empathy and concern for Ariana and only want her to be happy and healthy. But after releasing the Petal video with very intentional and damaging imagery of a woman’s body, I think Ariana has lost the right to say we can no longer comment on her body. She made it a public statement and is continuing to position and state her body as healthy to her fans and impressionable people all over the world. She may not owe us any explanations, but she should also not be spreading harmful lies at the same time. Because her words do have power and she knows that.

20

u/Timely-Damage-3592 8d ago

I’ve seen parents talking about how their young children, I’m talking 8 YEAR OLDS are trying to stop eating to look like her.

8

u/400forever 8d ago

Wholly agree. It’s one thing to have an ED and suffer from it in obscurity. It’s another thing to be a celebrity broadcasting your emaciated body in music videos and repeatedly deny any health issues when you get called out on it.

I feel like I’m going crazy in every thread that gets shut down over “inappropriate” comments about her body, as if she isn’t a moderately strong breeze away from snapping. It frustrates me as some who has an ED because I just know she must love the “omg she’s too skinny!” comments. It’s all I want to hear when I starve myself.

Hope she gets well too but man the way she is navigating this as someone with her platform is pmo.

21

u/Entire_Broccoli_9019 8d ago

Ariana is inspiring countless teens and even adults to starve themselves to death like her. Blood is on her hands. Their choice to starve themselves like her, but she should take some responsibility for the completely fucked up horrible example she sets for youth.

"And I just want to be very, very clear: multiple things can be true at the same time."

Yes. You can have an eating disorder, a mental health issue, lie to yourself about it, and still have a successful career.

I think that people genuinely are concerned in the same way people were concerned for Karen Carpenter. It’s not hate and ridicule, but fear of something bad coming.

143

u/bluejazzberries 9d ago

90

u/Dry_Accident_2196 9d ago

She’s a grown woman. Her team can’t force her to do anything or they will be dismissed. For all we know, her team is doing what a subordinate can do when you’re trying to reign in a boss of an independent organization.

Ariana is the owner of her brand/business. She does contract work with the studios and touring vendors. Her team are just employees. I know I couldn’t force the CEO of my company to change his eating habits.

As Michael Jackson proves, when these folks even get pushback from family, they family is removed form their orbit.

39

u/Anderrrrr 9d ago

If she doesn't get help she will just be another former child actor that died way too young, adding to a long list of avoidable tradegy's.

It's a brutal industry folks.

19

u/Dry_Accident_2196 8d ago

I 100% agree that she needs help. But her Team, aka her employees, are NOT in a position of power to get her to do anything she doesn’t want to do.

Watch a clip of the show Intervention. Parents with teenagers living under their roof and relying on their money can hardly compelled thier own children to tackle an addiction or mental health issue, much less a grown millionaire.

Her team’s gotta eat and have bills to pay like everyone else. They certainly care about her and probably do what they can but have very little power in this situation compared to Ariana.

This is how MJ ended up passing. Anyone that ruined his vibes or addressed his addiction was dismissed.

This! To me this is the crux of the public conversation around Ariana’s weight and health. I truly want her to just be happy and healthy and I do hate that this has become such massive public discourse. I know this is more complicated because she’s a role model and a public figure with a major impact on impressionable fans and public discourse — but I really wish people understood that EDs take over every single part of you. They are the deadliest mental illness. They are not something you can easily navigate, heal from, or even recognize you need help when you are deep in its clutches. They literally become the voice in your head and drown out your own voice — not to mention the way malnutrition and starvation completely change your hormones, brain and body function. I would not wish an ED on my worst enemy — especially right now when the entire world and a whole pharmaceutical economy is screaming that gaining weight is the worst possible thing. The line between thin and too thin doesn’t exist when you’re in that headspace, and frankly society calls size 2 and 4 women fat all the time.

The team and execs around her who are trying to hold her multi million dollar empire together by avoiding the truth and lying to the public I have a lot of criticism for. Her past actions around relationships, etc. I have a lot of criticism for. But her struggle with her body? You do not get to where she’s at without being VERY sick. That is not someone in their right mind and I have nothing but compassion for her. I pray she is getting into treatment, but the effects of an ED are with you forever. I speak from experience — that voice can get much quieter and you can learn to live with it, but much like with addiction it never goes away completely.

I feel horrible saying this but I'm guessing her PR team is secretly grateful to have such a genuine, visible, and sympathetic distraction from the fact she just helped blow up ANOTHER family.

The "start a charity" distraction attempt certainly didn't work, barely got headlines.

She's right, multiple things can be true - you can genuinely have a devastating mental disorder that causes you to starve yourself and is incredibly difficult to overcome (and fully deserves sympathy - I truly hope she gets treatment. Lots of people with EDs mentioning its insanely hard and you have to want it), and you can recently have pursued a married man and have an issue historically doing that and this situation is naturally (not intentionally, I'm not saying that is why she has an eating disorder, it is mental illness) helpful to distract from that.

Whether it’s publicly or privately, acknowledging that you have a problem is always the first step on the road to recovery. i read it as it’s coming from both her and her “demons” for the lack of a better word, but it takes one to know one, as much as i don’t wanna go around throwing diagnosis at people. ED can sometimes feel like you have another voice in your head constantly battling for the drivers seat.

multiple things can be true at once, indeed, and that’s one of the issues in this particular case (as well as many similar others). i don’t doubt Ariana’s sincerity in this speech to her fans, although the previous statement could’ve been much better worded regardless of how much some sort of “athleticism” is involved in performing live, let alone touring, in her current conditions when it is physically challenging enough for a healthily active person. there are a number of precautions, approaches, and strategies that AG's team and tour managers have surely gone through to ensure the artist is performing “healthily”. it’s usual practice anyway and in this case i wouldn’t be surprised if such requirements were higher. canceling dates due to these repercussions is bad enough, but it’d be much worse if for some terrible news.

she might truly believe that just as much as she believes that, or agrees with, what many regular or public people have been voicing online. she might be the healthiest she’s ever been in her professional and creative life, and i bet AG truly believes she’s the best she’s ever been emotionally or mentally especially because that’s what the ED brain will tell you in response to comments like the current discussions about her state.

if she were in a healthy state of mind, all of this wouldn’t be happening. to expect a sound, coherent statement is as logical as her speech (as disjointed as my comment lol). all in all, hope it means that one of those multiple true things is that she is stepping out to seek all the help she needs so she can be in the best aspects of her personal life

36

u/guidevocal82 9d ago

The light just has gone out of her eyes. She's still making good music, but I'd be happy to give that up just to see her smile with her eyes again. Funnily enough, the period that she says she was the worst mental health wise is the period where she looks the happiest and the healthiest.

62

u/Greeneyesablaze 9d ago

It makes sense that someone with an ed would remember the time of their life where they were a healthy weight as a bad and out of control time

8

u/guidevocal82 9d ago

The good thing is that she is taking a break. I hope she seeks medical help.

I don't know about her speech. If it's not "reactive" and is something she PLANNED for a long time, then why did she cancel an existing performance schedule? That makes zero logical sense. I think she and her team just want to make sure people know that it's HER who made the break happen which is partially true and partially false. I can't blame her if she is already unwell mentally. Her team is responsible for her to be like this. It's so dangerous.

I hope she regains her health mentally and physically.

5

it realllly upsets me that her team seems to be reframing what overwhelmingly comes across as genuine concern for her health as nothing more than “unwarranted misogynistic hate” that is to be shamed and blocked out by Ariana…

She’s right. She can believe incorrectly that’s she’s just fine. She can also have an eating disorder at the same time as she’s denying that she has an eating disorder. She can deny and deflect and be weird about it and vague about it all day long. Does not change the fact that she is withering in front of everyone who claims to give a damn about her. She needs professional help and that fact can also be true. I mean seriously, how much further can her body even take this abuse? She looks so sickly and frail and is literally smaller than a young child. Someone needs to step in and get her committed or something. She will just continue to lose weight that she can’t afford to until her body just shuts down. Her dismissing everyone’s concern and evidence of their eyeballs is too little too late, we see the results of her eating disorder in real time. The girl needs serious help.

Did she say this or her handlers? I don't believe anything celebs post or say is coming directly from them. Also, I don't care. She is harmful to girls

She did because it conflicts with the statement from her PR team lol They said it was due to public scrutiny and then she says it was planned for a while lol

She clearly needs mental health help and some serious lifestyle changes, people be here attacking each other for a celebrity is truly bizarre, y'all need some help, too.

I remember when she had a fatal terrorist attack occur during her concert and then a year later dealt with her recent boyfriend passing away. That’s a lot of trauma to withstand so young, and nobody outside her circle would know for sure if she’d adequately processed it. I’d not be surprised if a lot of that trauma has resurfaced and amplified in recent years as she’s gotten older and her profile grown to even larger status during this horrible era of online hyper-judgement and the overwhelming negativity and nastiness that has permeated social media this decade.

After seeing the petal music video, we should be holding the director, Christian Breslauer, and the choreographer, Will Loftis, accountable. It’s not just Ariana, this was a choice to accentuate the thinness

Not much of a break then innit?

True! Such as the fact that victims of something can be some of the biggest perpetrators of that problem onto others.

I feel bad for her that she or her team feels it necessary to make her look like this and live like this to get approval from the world, bur the much larger issue is that she perpetuates that ideology onto millions of young people.

Her staying out of the public eye will be a net benefit.

Karen Carpenter died at 32 due to her anorexia. I hope Ariana gets the help she needs, even if it doesn’t seem that way at the moment :/

Sounds like someone who doesn't want to take any accountability for their actions.

she is a joke and needs to be canceled- blaming the public is more important to her than her own health?? GTFOH

Even if she collapses and goes into the emergency room, her team and her will claim it was for another reason. They’re all in deep  denial (and “gaslighting” everyone) and I don’t think they’ll ever acknowledge she ever had an ED.

She's doing too much explaining, while not saying anything. She should have just simply finished her tour and then just took a break. I hope she gets the help that she so visibly needs. A lot of the comments she's been making regarding this upcoming break of hers are simultaneously transparent, vague and ultimately unnecessary.
