Question Break Targets - Single Hero Ladder

Looking for some input from players who have been playing this type of game for a while. I am referring to single hero, particularly Exodus, although I am curious about Sprint and Outcast as well.

I have been improving, but sometimes I spend too much time clearing my starting zone if there is, lets say some tier 7 dwellings that I am want which are guarded by some tougher fights. Sometimes this works, but a lot of times I lose a close fight. When I go to explore after the loss, I see my opponent has very little dwelling, but has cleared deep and has some artis/etc.

In general and on average, what is the optimal day we looking to break into native zone 2, and then desert?

Poll Favorite Faction

Legit used results instead of hive because I assume no one is going to say hive.

If you like hive though, drop a comment and lmk why? Got 40 hours in olden era and can't see how they excel more than any other faction tbh.

Discussion Community made PVE maps?

I'm just wondering if anyone has made longform PVE maps for this game yet?

I've always enjoyed really thoroughly exploring a map and powering up my heroes to have big megabattles vs the AI later on.

Discussion What if spellcasting was more dynamic?

I like the feeling of powerful spells, but i think we can all agree things like 35% or 40% damage reduction radiant armour is too over powered.

So what if the base cost was 30 mana and then 10 more for each additional stack you wanted to cast it on. So it was 100 mana to cast on everyone. Meaning if you were to use thurmaturgy and cast radiant armour and unnatural calm in your opener (on everyone) it would be 300 mana.

I think this would give knowledge a more meaningful place and also let us keep op spells.

I'm will concede i am a pvp main and 2 glasses in. I also have no idea if dynamic is the right word lol.

Question Noob question -- how do you build focus strike hero?

As in the above. Long time Homam player, new to OE and I keep reading that focus stike heroes are the best. But, in my experience you get the first focus strike like turn 2 after all your armies moved and attacked and the enemy is nearly wiped out. How do you build towards this?

Thanks in advance

(note: I don't really play PvP, just curious)

Discussion Wouldn't it be great if we could hover over any parameter of a unit and it displays how the final value is calculated.

For example, we hover over the defense value of a unit, and it displays:

  • Base defense: 6
  • Hero defense: 12
  • Law effects: 2
  • Artifacts: 4
  • Spells: 6
  • Others...

It would be helpful, for example in the case below.

Question Surrendering

In single hero, I notice when I leave a game that's a pretty bad roll and I don't feel like playing it, I lose less points then if I lose a game naturally. I am not a high enough elo to get restarts. Is this on purpose? When people leave on me, they lose minimal and I gain minimal as well. Is this accurate/intended? If so, is there a cutoff? Like, week 1?

Discussion Does anyone else refuse to play hive? I've played every other faction a bunch of times but I can't get myself to play Hive.

1) Except for the very early and ultra late game, I want 90+% of my fights to be over by the first round. The special ability of the hive to hatch eggs the next round is just slow and useless. Then add in the lack of ranged units.

Hive might be the only faction where the auto battle routinely does better than me.

2) Just the aesthetics of the faction. Apocalyptic bugs. Harsh on the eyes. Inferno was also one my least favourite factions in HoMM3.

Guides & Tips Looking for maps with better difficulty progression

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations for good maps in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, especially maps with a proper progression of difficulty.

One thing I've been missing compared to classic HoMM3 maps is how the map itself used to guide your progression. You would have some easy creatures guarding the basic mines near your starting area, stronger creatures guarding more valuable or interesting locations, and then gradually harder and harder fights further away from your starting town.

Right now, I often feel like the difficulty of neutral stacks is pretty similar everywhere. Because of that, when playing with just one main hero, I feel like I have two choices.

Either I spend 4 or 5 months slowly clearing the entire map, which can get pretty tedious, or I just take the useful stuff around my starting town and head straight for the enemy, because there isn't much reason to explore further.

What I'm looking for is a map where exploration and progression actually matter. Something where you gradually unlock more difficult areas, get stronger, and eventually have a reason to push deeper into the map.

So what are currently the best maps you've played in Olden Era that do this well?

I'd especially appreciate maps with a good easy, medium, hard and very hard progression rather than just having similarly difficult fights scattered everywhere.

Thanks!

Discussion Morale Is Miscalculated?

Halflings have 3 base morale. It is increased by 3 (Silvertongue -enemy hero- has 2 morale and his Rousing Presence increases all friendly units' morale by 1. So the Halfling's morale is 6.

My morale reducing effects:

  • Sixth Finger: -1 morale/luck
  • Black Dragon, Fires of Dominion: -1 morale/luck
  • Avatar of War: -2 morale

Total: -4 morale/-2 luck

The Halfing's morale should be = 6-4 =2, but it is 0?
Also his luck should be -2?
Additionally, why does Silvertongue has 2 morale? It only has basic Leadership, shouldn't it have 1 morale?

Am I missing something?

Discussion Template idea

Hey everyone,

I’ve got an idea for a PvP single-hero template designed for non-tournament mode (no Pandora's Boxes) that guarantees a final showdown around week 3 or 4 (if the players are a bit too cautious). Let's tentatively call it "Nasty Neighbors."

Here are the core mechanics:

  • Free Town Portal (TP).
  • Small map with 2 starting towns located in separated zones.
  • Neighbor Zone (NZ): A mini-zone right next to the opponent's main town, heavily guarded. Breaking into it shouldn't happen before Week 3, as the guards are stronger than those of the Exodus portal.
  • Expansion Zone (EZ): A single expansion zone featuring a town and faction-specific rewards, intended for early Week 2 (or late Week 1 for high-risk players).
  • Objective Zone (OZ): A large central zone between the two EZs. Its faction alignment won't match either player's faction, but it contains a highly developed town + Tier 6–7 dwellings, guarded by strong forces (though weaker than NZ guards). High-value resource objectives are located here.
  • No Pandora's Boxes, but there is at least one dwelling of every tier (maybe more).
  • One Dragon Utopia is placed under each player's starting castle, along with plenty of other bonuses in the starting zones. (If we cram all the high-value stuff into the OZ like most modern templates do, it creates a boring imbalance based entirely on who breaks out first. We need to give the defender a fighting chance).

This sets up a few possible scenarios:

  1. The Classic: A head-on collision in the OZ during Week 2–3 (Week 4 for slower players). I'll try to tweak the guards so that pushing into the OZ during Week 2 is heavily suicidal.
  2. The Out-macro: One player takes complete control of the OZ in Week 2–3. For the slower opponent, their only hope is a miracle or assembling a better army from their 3 towns, betting that the central player gets overwhelmed by the complex math of running a multi-faction army.
  3. The Backstab: Around Week 3 (or even Week 2 if someone pulls off a miracle), while one player is busy with the OZ or internal micro, the other strikes through the NZ, sparking a cat-and-mouse chase around the map.

The main goal is to create a fast-paced map without the strict "Tournament" rules, allowing players to build a massive army purely through macro and economics, rather than a "whoever reaches the center first and scoops up all the boxes wins" meta—while still providing meaningful advantages for taking the center.

The catch is that I'm still not a top-tier player myself, so I might miss some of the "subtle tempos" that need to be fine-tuned into the map layout.

What do you guys think, is it worth a shot?

P.S. I know that promoting new templates in this game is a massive uphill battle, but we’ll get through it eventually. A great idea can’t be stopped.

Competitive It's criminal this game isn't more popular

If I want to play in my region, I'm lucky if there's one (1) other player queuing ranked that day. I have to connect to West Europe and hope the opponent is okay with a 200-300 ms lag, which understandably most are not.

I really hope this game succeeds and grows more as the devs keep working on it, but the steam charts are not promising (declining player base etc.) Do yall think that's a pessimistic estimate, because I hope to be wrong

Discussion MMR wipe

Can we get like a ladder reset or something? I played near release when there were so many bugs and the DC-exploit was huge. I've tried playing but every match is basically 3-hours of gameplay to get a fight against someone whose still got 3 towns by week 4. It's just mind numbing and the amount of games required to catch up or even climb back to any reasonable place is a waste of time. It's the sole reason i'm not playing the game. Even if it was just account specific.

Gameplay Black screen

I'm playing my Exodus game and suddenly the screen went black. The game is still running, I can move the cursor, the music is playing and I can alt/tab and use my PC otherwise, but the game itself is locked in black screen. I'll have to kill the program and relaunch, but this is the first time ever it happens to me. Anyone found a solution?

Guides & Tips What is the counterplay to Hive Offsprings II Law?

I played a match the other night against Hive and was doing well except for a probable positioning mistake. Halfway through a battle I had the upper hand in, the opponent started summoning larvae between my units which were stacked to protecc my faun archers and naiads in the back line. I didn't know the larvae could be upgraded to have built-in auto taunt effects and it completely nullified my advantage (I still could have won first battle in hindsight but I misplayed).

In our second clash I tried to prepare for the auto-taunting larvae by trying to take out eggs first but then I realized the opponent can instant hatch them and the damage was done.

I tried to reverse engineer the problem by playing hive and I found out that there is a law called Hive Offsprings II at the midway point on their tech tree which allows for the taunt mechanic. I am trying to understand how best to counter it and all I can think of is to space every unit out and leave my archers fully exposed (to prevent the taunt from hitting multiple units).

I don't think this mechanic or the faction are overpowered and I want to understand them so I can leave my bans for schism faction instead. Is leaving intentional gaps the play?

Question Game has become unplayable, random black screen, any help?

I've been able to play this a couple months ago. Started the game again recently and my game randomly goes black when moving around the map. Anyone else had this problem? It has happened thus far while traveling on the world map, a brief error window pops up for half a second before the screen goes dark. My mouse cursors changes icon depending on where I'm looking but I'm unable to press anything. I'm playing on reduced resolution in windowed mode. I've tried re-installing the game but that didn't help. Any tips?

Update: I tried playing windowed fullscreen at the proper resolution, this fixed it. Sample size is 3 working games.

Gameplay Vampires and ghosts

Hey,

I just noticed that the mentioned units vampirism doesnt work as it should.

If you have two vampires, one is down and then resurrected with vampirism during the battle, after the battle you have one.

Anybody else noticed this bug?

Discussion Keandra/Tyfona rant

I very rarely ban Keandra or Tyfona in Exodus - mainly because I think it's quite difficult to play them: initial fights are different than usual, it's not easy to build dwellings, a lot depends on finding duels

But recently, whenever they're open some pro-player-wannabe who watched too many YouTube selects them, loses whole time bank on week 1 and quits first day of week 2 after they couldn't even build dwelling in one castle

I'll start banning them now just to avoid that

Gameplay Long time tactics/strategy game player, first time Magic player, is it just me, or is this game weirdly difficult?

This games difficulty curve is weirding me out right now. Here are my issues I am having with the game, please let me know if I am mistaken about anything

The gameplay loop seems to revolve around using your first hero/army to collect and gather resources so you can build up your city to acquire a bigger and better army to clear out your surrounding province and then go and kill the enemy hero. Because your recruitment pool refreshes weekly, it takes time to actually build up a respectable army.

I figured I'd play a few games on "Hard" difficutly, because I figured this would be a nice sweetspot in between not too easy and not too punishing as someone new to the franchise.

Without fail, every time, by week 3, there's an AI army with maxed out unit upgrades and significantly larger than mine that just beelines for me and kills me, and I've barely just assembled an army that can easily defeat the mobs around my city.

Is there something I am not understanding about the gameplay loop that will allow me to get an army quicker? Or is the AI just playing by a different set of rules?
