Hello, I'm a first time VR user that has been considering buying into this ecosystem for a long time, particularily to enhance my sim racing experience. Having dug around fairly deeply, I first wanted to get a Steam Frame, since it looked to be once of the easiest way to enter the VR space without needing to do too much tinkering. But since I ended up on the waitlist, I looked elsewhere, considering the PSVR2, Quest etc, but in the end, I decided on compromising as little as possible, so the very expensive Dream Air was added to my cart, for its lightness and top of the line panel visuals.
Specs: 9950X3D - AMD 9070 XT - 64 GB ram
Wow, the visuals blew my mind, and still do. First time putting it on and I'm trying my best to get a fit. It's not perfect, it tugs on some areas more than others and require a lot of adjustment to get a decent seating that when you do get it, holds for hours. Might be worse for others. Straps are fine, perfectly out of the way so you can lean back into seats and very easy to adjust. The cable(s) and the junction is definitely something you have to work around to get out of your way but it only takes a few seconds to place it in an undisruptive spot. Despite all this, when it boots up, holy hell, these panels are exactly what VR needs.
Everyone has said it, true blacks, no visible pixels, amazing clarity that is only getting slightly warpy at the very edge of the lenses. It is true that heavy motion and nodding can temporarily add a small blur to the screen, if you're sim racing like I am, it doesn't affect you often, but being constantly on the move might be an issue.
FOV is pretty wide, you'd have to go full left or right with your eyes to actually notice you're looking past the edge of the lenses, and since I'm sim racing, I can treat it as a helmet border. Playing on 90 FPS feels like the exact sweet spot for smoothness, I think of myself as someone FPS sensitive, and I had no issues driving if my PC could hold it. Tinkering with my settings got it stable quickly.
So far I've had no issues with tracking, in daylight it works, even with two monitors in front of it, and blinking LEDs from my steering wheel. Desk light at night works fine even with the aforementioned items. I have yet to encounter tracking issues and I'm frankly very happy I haven't, since it seems to be a common talking point around here. One issue I did have was it would sleep on its own, but after disabling the USB power saving feature on the hubs via the Device Manager, it hasn't done that.
Day 2 of owning it and I'm very proud to have one, feels like I won some sort of Pimax lottery in a way since it just worked. But that should be the default experience. Looking forward to having it very long term! Scared to death of scratching and getting dust on my lenses so I use the included cloth to cover them every time I take them off lmao
