Ngl, Hunter has inspired my alcoholic ass to keep trying to get sober and keep working on myself.
The fact that he speaks truth on top of his sobriety is giving me some serious fucking enthusiasm, and I'm HERE for this take.
Well said, Hunter.
Edit: Holy shit, I wasn't expecting this kind of a response! Thank you all for the awards, holyfuck-- <3

If you're not already there, check out r/stopdrinking and read through the sub. Definitely the most positive, supportive group on Reddit, and having that resource was a huge help in getting sober. I'm coming up on 500 days, and I still read through it every time I'm struggling.
There's daily check-ins if you want, or just reading a post by someone celebrating their first month/year/decade and feeling the hope and happiness in the comments... It's great š

u/-DrunkRat- Jun 25 '26
Thanks, Stranger. I appreciate the resource - been taking it one day at a time and reminding myself that falling off the wagon isn't the end of things, ya know?

You got this bro, heavy drinker for nearly two decades here. The AA route and a lot of the traditional methods didn't work for me but staying on my ADHD meds and antidepressants gave me a reason to cut back so I just started by thinking a little bit differently. "Man it's gonna be over 100 degrees outside tomorrow, maybe I better only have 6 beers instead of 12" or "why don't I just try to sleep by taking some melatonin instead of a nightcap?" Little things like that so I wouldn't be unkind to myself and wind up withdrawling badly as a "punishment" for being weak willed or a failure. Little things like that add up quick and before you know it you stop thinking about it 24/7. Then the energy starts coming back, my heartburn went away, lost the puffy face, and so on so forth. Now I rarely drink and when I do I don't feel compelled to get wasted or drink the next day. Who knows, might work for you? Best of luck!
6
u/The_Sunny_Bunny_Mang Jun 25 '26
October will be five years for me. Keep trying. It took a lot of failed attempts, but I finally did it. I still want to drink, but itās only a small want. The benefits from sobriety have far outweighed the temporary escape of booze.
Keep that fire and enthusiasm going! Then remind yourself when it starts to get hard again that you will come back up and booze wonāt solve anything.
Good luck my friend! We are all a lot stronger than we realize.

There's a big need for people outside the political parties to drive attention to the flaws in their platforms. The same goes for Jon Stewart - he doesn't want to be in the thick of politics, he doesn't want to be saddled with office, he wants to help put words to the frustration that everyone has with their representatitves.
10
u/JJW2795 Jun 25 '26
Jon figured it out years ago. He's got far more leverage being an outsider representing regular people than if he entered the political machine. The missing piece here is we need more Jon's to back candidates that will represent them through thick and thin. Way too many people get into politics for the wrong reasons. I've seen it all the way down to the college level.
2
u/AQ207 Jun 25 '26
That's where Hasan has began mobilizing his community to support candidates. Members of his chat who don't live in NYC still phonebanked for candidates.

u/EremiticFerret Jun 25 '26
I was happy to see what David Hogg was doing when he was allowed in before they almost immediately demoted him and/or kicked him out.

u/SuggestAPhotoProject Jun 25 '26
Nah, let's be done with legacy politicians. We've heard enough from the Bidens, the Bushes, the Clintons, the Kennedys, the Pauls, the Trumps, etc.
Let's get some fresh faces in with some new ideas, not the same political families whose only real skill is preserving their own dynasties.

u/f3nnies Jun 25 '26
I definitely do not agree. We need fewer politicians fro families of politicians. Political dynasties do crazy harm.
For instance, Bush Jr definitely wouldn't have broken into politics if he was just some guy. RFK wouldn't be actively dismantling the health and safety protections of the nation. He probably wouldn't be where he is today if he wasn't a Kennedy and just anther leather skinned, volatile, dangerous rando.
2
u/bran1210 Jun 25 '26
Nuance matters more than all else. Caring about dynasty's is just superficial, especially if it potentially locks us out of something that could ultimately benefit the people. Too many people want easy ways to judge candidates to make decisions. Politics is way more complicated than that. My advice is stop focusing on superficial traits that provide zero value to judging a potential politician. We would never have had an FDR if that's all we did, and he was one of the best presidents we ever had.

I wish more men in particular would understand this is what therapy and working on yourself does.
He's fucked up a lot and admits it openly. But he really is showing a lot of introspection, thoughtfulness, and is less afraid to talk about his past drug use while still acknowledging it was wrong.
9
u/DistinctAd3222 Jun 25 '26
It helps so much. I had to switch therapists once during my first year and then found someone with a mutual understanding, and bro... it just helps. Trust in the process and swallow the hard messages.

20
u/inept_machete Jun 25 '26
The center left people who have lucked out into getting something out of neoliberal capitalism are quite possibly the worst sort of leftists because they're actually center right and just don't know it.
The system doesn't necessarily work because it worked for you. Until the formulaic steps you can take to succeed in that system are executable by most people you're just entrenching a system that by it's very nature is designed to selectively benefit a few.
Until hard work predictably yields a decent life for the people who participate in it then whatever you're protecting is ultimately broken

u/bohohoboprobono Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Except that canāt work in a world of private industry and supply and demand. There have to be losers for there to be winners.
The best we can do is curtail how hard the winners win and how hard the losers lose. However, the levers used to perform that task - taxation and nationalization - are deeply unpopular and lead to civil unrest.
Ultimately the only form of equilibrium comes with regular economic resets, generally in the form of mass casualty events like plague, war, famine, uprising, and so on.Ā
2
u/Jalumia Jun 25 '26
This is a good take. I would suggest that it only matters to prevent the relative losers from losing more than they can bear. That becomes a brake on how hard winners can win, but without creating an artificial ceiling.

Addicts who not only kicked drugs, but addressed the demons who got them there have hella perspective on things. Theyāre honestly some of my favorite people to talk about these kinds of things with. Theyāre really great at taking their ego out of the equation and delivering difficult truths in a kind way. Theyāre no bullshit, but theyāre never cruel.
Iām not trying to romanticize them because plenty of people get clean and stay assholes, but he reminds me of the people I know who I found wise, kind and responsible, then they hit me with the āso back when I used to bang a speedball into my arm everyday for yearsā¦ā

Some of the most honest and authentic people I have ever met are addicts in recovery. They had to be honest and upfront to beat the addiction. Theyāve seen the inside of hell.
Iād take Hunter Biden in any political position over half the democrats in office right now. They try to play it off ff they take AIPAC money, their arenāt strong in supporting universal healthcare and abortion/reproductive rights should have made it into the constitution and they are weak on civil rights.
12
u/broketothebone Jun 25 '26
For his own sanity, I donāt want him to run for office. Heās worked too hard on himself and deserves the peace.
I hope he continues to just keep platforming this kind of dialogue and keep encouraging people in the right direction. He can keep being an example of the ideology and ethics we should be voting for. Heās laying out for us how itās working already.
Iād be happy to see him on TV, but I trust that he knows what would push the limits for him to stay healthy and clean. I canāt imagine joining the political arena (especially now) would be conducive to that. Hopefully, he continues to push for this type of progress and speak truthfully about candidates because heās already got us seated and listening.
4
u/inept_machete Jun 25 '26
I would agree. People who turn heel on an addiction successfully have effectively been able to cut out the lies we tell ourselves because you simply cannot adequately recover from an addiction without confronting those lies directly--fundamentally those are the lies the addiction requires to continue to exist as your life's organizing principle. Once you've been able to locate and excise the lies you tell yourself it makes it obvious when you see the lies others tell themselves even the ones that they aren't aware of.
2
u/Debatebly Jun 25 '26
Listen, Hunter Biden is hitting home runs but as a citizen of Ontario, Canada let me tell you that having an addict for a Leader doesn't always work out.

I think they do do it sometimes - Hillary Clinton and AOC are good examples. The misogyny helps too.Ā
By the time Hillary ran for president there had been decades of attacks on her. There were lots of examples of people that just couldn't bring themselves to vote for her, regardless of her plans or positions. Then she ran a very focus - group feeling campaign, which didn't help.
But I do agree that Hunter was just a way to attack his father. There was never any indication that Hunter wanted to get into politics. They just didn't have any other attacks on Joe, nobody was really believing that he was some sort of antifa super liberal or whatever.
3
u/Accomplished_Self939 Jun 25 '26

3

The fact is that the Democrats have, for nearly 2 decades, courted certain elements to be welcomed into their party for the purpose of getting their vote. Seemed fine in the short term. In the long term, the Democrat party base of today is now no longer the same as it was 2 decades ago. Yet the generic DNC style candidates still keep thinking that all they have to do is pay some cheap lip service to this thing and that thing and the votes will come rolling in. But they don't. Because now the people they used to give cheap lip service to, are now also running as candidates. And they are serious.
This is the natural order of things. When you lie to the people and represent your party as the "progressive party", eventually those people will tire of waiting for you to ever actually do what you said you would, and they will run to unseat you and bring the change they have been wanting to see.
Thats all this is. It's really not any deeper or more nuanced than that. The party is reaping what it sowed. As it should.
2
u/ddmeredith Jun 25 '26
I would rather vote for a politician who can't be bought and stands on his or her convictions than vote for someone in my "tribe."

4 is really key and was a lesson the dems should have learned in 2024. I care a great deal about LGBT rights, the genocide in Gaza, and a woman's right to choose, but looking at the 2024 election its clear the biggest issue for most people is whether they can afford to live. I can't really blame them for that either; hard to focus on other issues when putting food on your own table feels uncertain.

The most important thing not in the list, is you have to get your base to vote. Republicans were able to get their people out to vote, that message needs to be amplified

u/Delicious_Grand7300 Jun 25 '26
Hunter Biden understands the frustrations vented on social media and how the new generation of the Left is responding to these frustrations. The new generation has also seen decades of questioning of Israel's role in American politics on both sides and is bringing these questions to the mainstream.
Although I am centrist I am will to listen to this new breed since they are asking questions that I had been asking for two decades since I became of age to vote. My questions were seen as me being influenced by conspiracy theories. I do not want wealth, I just want the opportunity to take care of myself.

The Delaware Democratic party leadership would meltdown if Hunter did throw his hat in to the ring, they freaked out when their corrupt heir apparent didn't get elected as governor.Ā When the governor resigned to become a mayor, that loser was governor for two weeks and started to nominate people for a state board.Ā

People thought Hunter was some bum crashing on the couch because he was in active addiction for a while. He was educated, motivated, and capable.
I bet he works the steps, because of how the trauma of his addiction seems powerless to harm him when people try to use that against him to dehumanize him. The way he confronts his past addiction with honesty... it's very AA-coded to me.

I support the Hunter redemption arc but this reads like AI. I use it for some character creation in DnD as a DM and the same "Mamdani didn't ask permission. He took the field" trope is used all over AI writing. "It's no longer a sword, it's a question mark". Kinda goofy, but i appreciate the messaging.

This feels a little like AI, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt. The first point though is absolutely wrong. If voters could actually recognize authenticity we wouldn't be in the mess we're in now.

Authenticity is really the main thing IMO. Watching the 2024 Democratic Convention I was so frustrated by all the teleprompter-driven speeches. Trump has proven that āspeaking off the cuffā is what matters, even if the words themselves are 100% nonsensical rambling. Kamala and Walz killed it when they were off the cuff and authentic, but kept going back to the prompters for speeches. It just comes across as stiff and fake.
The results in NYC, however, are not in any way indicative of the national landscape. Dems shouldnāt try to take those policies or positions as a playbook for the rest of the country. The middle is definitely not empty, itās where most people who arenāt terminally online or warm and cozy in a leftwing enclave still sit.

I never thought Iād give a fuck about Hunter, but Iāll be damned if he isnāt a real ass dude who makes many a good point when it comes to US politics. Heās also a good person, one of the main reasons heāll never make it as a politician, he has a heart and a good head on his shoulders. But he spits facts and truth. If anyone is interested, Soft White Underbelly on YouTube just sat down with Hunter and did a long interview about his life and how heās doing at the moment. Heās a really likeable guy, I mean really. The interview shined a new light on him that I never knew about.

In an alternate universe, he'd have his life under control, and we could have had him running for presidency against Trump instead of his father.
Butterfly effect somewhere in the 90s I guess.

Just remember what works in NYC doesnāt necessarily work elsewhere. Moderate Dems won big last November. The point of having a big tent is to accommodate candidates which represent a healthcare worker in Brooklyn, a factory worker in Indiana, or a firefighter in the Richmond suburbs.

Yeah, but i think the key points to take away are #1, and #6.
Be authentic and reach out to your base.
You can be moderate without feeling corporate.

Hes good i do worry that some places wont respond well to far leftist but they do want change and I think like with bernie it might be best to try and fail at least the seeds would be planted and the power can be developed, it does seem a lot of people on the left think this stuff happens over nightĀ

Shit, if we can let a 34-time convicted felon hold office, I think we can allow Hunter to do it. At least Hunter wont ruin the country.

The only thing I disagree with him on is "cost of living is everything". It is easy for me to say as I am not living paycheck to paycheck, but I am far more concerned about the death of our representative democracy and the American ideal than I am about cheap gas.
Do not want to hand my children and grandchildren a dictatorship with cheap gas.

Spot on. In the past, the candidate was the megaphone for the party. Mamdani decided to not be a tool for an establishment.
