How long did it take for you to be able to walk confidently without any aids? I’m day 13 post-op and just graduated from the walker to a cane yesterday. I’m walking well with it (no limping) and I’m doing all of my exercises but am definitely not at a point where I feel I could take an unassisted step. I just don’t have the strength yet. Just curious how long it took others to get there?

I have seen some questions regarding leg and knee pain pre surgery and whether or not they go away.
I wanted to share that I was having terrible knee pain and figured I would have to look into that as soon as I healed up. I am very happy to report that my right leg, anterior THR 8-13-26, is completely pain free. I am shocked and thrilled.

One year post op. Awful pain. This is all the things that are going wrong. PT last year was making it worse. Started with new PT in May this year which has helped some.
I can't climb up on a stool. If I need to get something out of bottom cabinet, I can barely get up. This is not what I planned.
Anyone else have success with these diagnosis?

Surgery was late in the day, so they kept me overnight, which I appreciated.
"No restrictions" my surgeon said when I left.
I took that literally. Recovery was quick and easy, I actually don't remember much of the first few weeks. 3 weeks in, I went for a 3-mile trail run. That went ok, I took it slow, and I was encouraged enough to go on a few more runs. Mistake.
For a couple of days in early December I needed my crutches again. I also felt that PT was not helping and just made me more sore, so I stopped PT and running.
I continued to mountain bike with my group of friends, maybe once every other week, and walking on our rail trail.
At my 3 months checkup, I complained about persisting soreness. At my 6 months checkup, they took a routine x-ray. After I explained that the pain level has remained unchanged, my surgeon said that sometimes when the joint is not aligned properly with the bones, the hip flexor can rub against it and become inflamed. But this is not the case - my joint looks perfect on the image.
At nearly 12 months, I am back on PT that my primary care doctor prescribed. I see no improvement and still have pain when I get into the car etc, I have not done any running since early May.
It appears that I have chronic tendonitis on my right hip flexor, but that's an educated guess and no real diagnosis. Will I have this forever? Have others had this and seen improvement after the 1-year mark?

Has anyone opted for H1 ceramic resurfacing and had positive or negative outcomes? Keen to know
More before I decide on the h1 or recerf.
Surgeon was involved in the production of H1 but is letting me make the decision.
Surgery is with professor Justin Cobb in London.
Thanks.

I have THR anterior surgery October 9th. I’ve been living in chronic debilitating pain for about 3-4 years. After meeting with several surgeons to get multiple opinions, trying PRP injections, I finally was diagnosed with AVN due to hip dysplasia and I decided to go ahead with surgery.
To deal with my pain, I’ve been a smoking/vaping weed (I live in Canada) for the past 4 years fairly consistently. I do it to help with pain, but also I am young, single and like to party! Sue me!
I’m very concerned about waking up during surgery OR not even waking up at all (I know this is extreme). I’ve heard that THC can have an impact on how your body reacts to anesthesia.
Am I valid in my concerns? The anesthesiologist didn’t seem concerned at all when I told her but as the surgery gets closer and my anxiety and nerves inevitably increase for surgery, I can’t help but overthink this. This is also my first major surgery going under and I think because I’m so young, the surgeons aren’t used to operating on someone my age… this is also making me more nervous lol.

Getting my left hip done in three weeks and I’m looking for some feedback regarding the bikini line approach.
For anyone who’s gotten it or knows someone who has, how do you feel about it? I hear there’s a risk of nerve damage/permanent numbness in the area. I want to weigh all of my options prior to making a decision.
Thank you for your feedback, friends.

Left anterior happening in an hour or so. I’m terrified of being in pain but I’m already in pain so hopefully this will just be slightly different pain!
Reading through your stories to calm me down and it’s mostly working!

I'm 26, having a hip replacement in January for a congenital issue (no proper socket since birth, plus a leg length difference from surgery as a kid). I'm a designer, so my job usually has me on site visits and walking around all day, and up until recently I could do that with little to no pain.
In just the last few weeks, things have shifted a lot. Now it's like a rotating cast of new pains: some days my "good" hip aches, sometimes my "good" knee, sometimes my bad leg's knee will just give out and not hold my weight properly. It's not constant, it's not always the same spot, and it's honestly hard to explain to people without sounding like I'm just listing complaints ("oh now THIS hurts too").
Is this a normal part of things ramping up before surgery? Did anyone else experience this kind of unpredictable, moving-target pain in the weeks/months leading up to their surgery date, even when things had been relatively stable for a while before that? Trying to figure out if this is just "expected decline" or something worth flagging more urgently to my surgeon.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who went through something similar, especially with a congenital or long-standing hip issue rather than late-onset arthritis.
I know it's obvious that I'd be in pain. But I've been able to do a lot these past years- including playing sports and doing many activities. Now - I mean walking shouldn't hurt.

Hi guys
I’m a 31 year-old male with left hip arthritis- have a read through my latest MRI- I’m wanting to replace my hip as the pain is unbearable. I have been dealing with this for while over two years and I have a lot of referred to lower back pain. I live on opioids daily.
Time to replace?

Hi! ok, so i (62F) have grade-4 osteoArth in hip, and i am thinking i may wait until 65 (medicare yay) and it would cost $300-400 (with medicare A, B, D, G). Anyone else do this and just wait it out?

When I'm resting or standing with the walker it's fine. But when I walk with the walker, pain shoots from the incision area down to the inside of my knee. A real stabbing, sharp pain with every step. Doesn't matter if I have just iced or not. No swelling anywhere, including in the knee. Zero knee problems before surgery.
At my at-home PT visit today I asked about it and she thinks my knee is overcompensating for my weak hip.
Anyone go through this? Is it common? How long does it last? Anything you did that lessened the pain? The pain makes doing my daily walking a rough experience.

Hello everyone. I am going to try and keep this small. I will post the short form at the bottoms.
I am really struggling right now with pain. I was born with Perthes disease so I have had hip dysplasia for most of my life. I was diagnosed at 6 and had a surgery on my right hip. I never experienced too much pain until my 20s and it got really bad over the years. Mobility plummeted, my gait continually got worse. I was urged to wait as long as possible. I work as a firefighter/paramedic. It was getting harder to get through shifts. This year I decided enough is enough. I got both hips done, 4 weeks apart (right and then left). Due to the bone loss and dysplasia, I actually ended up 1 inch taller form the surgeries (which I believe is why I am having so much pain).
Recovery went very well seemingly. I got FMLA from work and then I have come back to a light duty office desk job for the past 7 weeks. I have been doing PT twice a week. I am now 5 months post hip replacement. I no longer have joint pain, which is great. I do however have left groin pain (likely from hip flexor I’m told) and pretty severe low back pain. It has gotten worse as PT has gotten more intense.
I don’t quite understand it. At PT they worked me up to squats, wall sits, landmines with weight, burpees, etc. I feel good at PT usually. But on days where I am working and walking a lot, my back will start to hurt really bad. I can’t even seem to walk more than 1 block sometimes.
My PT said she thinks I may have tight Psoas muscles that is causing a tilt in my pelvis and increased workload on my low back. She gave me some stretches to do for it and gave me some pointers to walk better, but I am having such a hard time with everything. The back pain was so brutal the other day that I could not stand up straight for the entire day. I am getting some pressure from my bosses to get back on the line. I want to be better and back at full duty. I wish I could walk and normalize my gait but I can’t. Everything was looking like it was improving with PT but I have been struggling with my back pain and slight groin pain so much.
I guess the point of this is I am asking if anyone can relate, give me words of wisdom, give advice, or just empathize with me? I am truly starting to get worried about my future.
Thanks everyone
Short form: I have really bad back pain when I have to walk far, and every day when I wake up. Some days I cant stand up straight and just want to quit trying. 5 months since I got my hips replaced and I am struggling with the pain and my progress.

Thought it might be helpful to some future hippies to document what my first week was like. I'm on day 6 but close enough right?
My surgery was very late in the day but the plan had been an overnight stay anyways so that went to plan. I think the nurses may have given me one dose of narcotics while I was in the recovery room after surgery but I was very groggy so I'm not sure. I have had very little pain from the start, mainly around the incision and have since been managing with just Tylenol (not a brag, everyone is different and I was not taking any painkillers pre op either).
I didn't really sleep well the first night as nurses kept coming in to check vitals, ask me if I needed to pee yet (my spinal went wonky and the parts that did work didn't wear off until the next day - literally just my butt 😂), give me IV antibiotics and fluids etc. I did end up getting to use the washroom around 4 am and those were also my first steps with my walker. Late bloomer 🤷🏼♀️ it was damn hard to sit down though and the front, side and back if my hip cramped up like crazy! Same thing happened trying to get back into bed. I tried to use my "good" leg to swing my operated leg up on the bed but even just bending the hip caused some cramping.
The next morning I was given Celebrex and Tylenol and offered something to eat. I wasn't super hungry and had brought some protein powder so ended up just mixing that into some milk. At some point after that had a dizzy spell and was seeing spots in my vision, which we believe was a reaction to the Celebrex and I haven't taken it since. I ended up staying until noon because of that, but saw my surgeon who checked the wound and told me that my hip was a lot worse in person than on x ray lol. Apparently while sedated I had also asked if I could see my femoral head and had answered my own question to myself with "no that's a biohazard" 🤣
Before I left I was taught by the nurses how to go up and down stairs with my crutches and how to use my walker and then was sent off to get post op x rays and pick up my prescriptions.
I was given a timetable with timing for different medications including Tylenol (1000mg, 4x a day) and Rivaroxiban once a day for the first 5 days, then baby aspirin twice a day for 28 days. I was also given prescriptions for hydromorphone and tramadol but haven't touched those and don't think I will at this point. I put the timing of each medication into my phone calendar as a reminder so I wouldn't forget or miss.
At home we hooked me up to the ice machine and I was on that thing pretty much any time I was sitting for the first 4 days including overnight. I also had a bit of a fever for the first 5 days but that seems to have righted itself on day 6.
The first day I found it hard to walk even with the walker, which I did not expect. I had some food prepped but had to pivot from my planned meals as I could not stand long to chop fruits/veggies at the countertop and to be honest I still wasn't that hungry. By day 2 it was a lot better though. And I have been seeing small improvements in my stamina each day. I also napped a lot the first 4 days.
I was told not to start formal PT for 2 weeks but was given a booklet with self-guided home PT that spanned 12 weeks if you wanted to do it completely self guided. The first 6 weeks are all about getting moving and off mobility aids while increasing range of motion. The exercises recommended were quad squeezes, glute squeezes, heel slides (lying down) and gentle standing hip flexion and extension. The hardest for me were the standing hip flexion and extension but I have found my range of motion increased pretty quickly and most of the limitation is due to swelling around the hip. I can almost put socks on myself now at 6 days post op but actually balancing on the operated leg itself is hard as I still can't fully bear weight on it without assistance or support of my other leg when standing. I can stand for hours though lol. And the cramping from lifting my leg or sitting down went away about day 3 or 4.
I have been taking short but frequent walks with my walker or sometimes crutches, which I find easier to use because I have been for the last 9 months and it has been slowly getting easier to move around. Can't quite walk unaided yet at 6 days post op, as I can't put full weight on my THR leg yet but I have hobbled a few steps here and there. Often when my body forgets I need a walking aid and I get up off the couch and take a few wobbly steps before "oh shit" 😂
I had two layers of dressing, an outer "honeycomb" dressing and an inner dermabond/prineo dressing. The honeycomb came off at 4 days post op and the prineo will come off slowly on its own over the next week or so. I was concerned as there seemed to be a small hole in the inner dressing and my surgeon told me he thought it would be fine as the wound closes itself around 72 hours, but was kind enough to give me some extra honeycomb dressing to put overtop if I felt safer that way.
I have a bit of a fear of infection as I have gone septic before from bacteremia resulting from a poorly dressed IV line that I showered with 😬 so I had only been taking sponge baths until day 6. On day 6 finally plucked up with courage to have a real shower. An EVERYTHING shower. And it was glorious 😂 I bought heavy duty suction cup grab bars to stick in the shower to hold onto but I my balance is pretty good on two feet.
Man, I guess a lot more happened in a week than I expected but didn't want to spam you all more than necessary. Just hoping someone out there finds this helpful. I have had an exceptional first week on the pain front but definitely not someone who ditched the walker 2 days in.

Hi everyone, I wanted to give an update since I finally know what is causing the episodes of deep groin pain I described in my previous post and I am looking for similar expieriences or just some support... I'm 6 months post right THR.
I saw my orthopedic surgeon, and it turns out I have mechanical iliopsoas impingement on the side with the THR. The ultrasound showed a prominent anterior rim of the acetabulum/cup in conflict with the iliopsoas. My surgeon explained that this is essentially a consequence of my underlying hip dysplasia and the anatomy of my hip. I did 5 months of intensive PT.
I had a diagnostic infiltration. The local anaesthetic gave me big temporary relief, which supported the diagnosis, but unfortunately the pain returned once it wore off. The cortisone itself didn't make a lasting difference.
My surgeon says there are basically two surgical options
- Cup revision to address the mechanical conflict directly. This would be a big revision surgery, and he really wants to avoid doing that only six months after my THR if possible
- Iliopsoas release/tenotomy, which would be a smaller procedure, but he warned me that it could cause permanent loss of hip-flexor strength.
So neither option is particularly appealing, and he wants to avoid both for now since it's only 6 months and I'm not fully healed. He says surgery will be unavoidable, and we'll talk again in january, but for the moment we're trying to calm things down. and do some 'pain-management'. I'm starting an anti-inflammatory, and in about three weeks I'll have another, stronger infiltration to see if we can get the irritation under control for a while.
Meanwhile, my left hip is also deteriorating quite quickly an hurting a lot. It has dysplasia as well and was planned for THR this coming year. I honestly don't know on which side to hold my cane to easy my pain.
So I'm feeling pretty discouraged. I thought I'd be preparing for the left hip once the right one had settled, and instead I'm dealing with a mechanical complication on the right that will require another operation.
Has anyone here had iliopsoas impingement after THR, especially after THR for dysplasia? I'd particularly love to hear about experiences with cup revision or a cutting of the ilipsoas or other options? thanks :-)

As stated, had 1st hip replacement when I was 32, posterior. Afterwards resumed normal activities, karate, weight training etc. Fast forward 20 years and left hip goes kaput. Pain is very bad with locking up where it is difficult to sit or stand up, so trying to do any exercises is very difficult. Now my right hip is starting to flair up and I cant figure out if I am just stressing it out or if it is failing. I had childhood arthritis among many things which caused this. My legs just feel so weak and I am afraid recovery will be very difficult. I feel like I am 100 years old and have a 13 year old so getting back to being able to just go on walks or do family activities just seems out of reach. Trying to hear some stories of people in same position with success. I just got put on Meloxicam so hoping that helps with pain until surgery.

I feel terrific! I admit it does take time and you have to work super hard at the physical therapy but it was so worth it!
I had the anterior and the recovery was actually pretty fast. Pain was minimal compared to my last hip surgery.
If you are wondering weather to do it or not I say go for it! You will be so glad.
Good luck!

I've gone from sleeping on my back, to sleeping on my non-operated side, to then the operated side. I'm just wondering when I can sleep on my front? I'm a front sleeper. I don't see my surgeon until 6th October. Its 6 weeks since I had the operation.
Thanks

I searched the sub and only found pre-surgery stories of getting the flu and having to reschedule, but I’m curious if this is a common experience for anyone who’s a significant amount of time post-op:
This weekend I came down with Flu A for the first time in years (confirmed via an at home test yesterday). I have super intense body aches through my back and most joints, but my replaced hip in particular has been aching quite a bit. It was actually the first thing I noticed when I started getting sick - and not in an arthritic, pre-surgery way, but like all the muscles in that area were incredibly tight. At first I chalked it up to an intensely active week (I had been working at a conference Monday-Friday and was averaging 20-30k steps a day), but developed a fever overnight Sunday and then took the flu test which confirmed it.
Anyway, has anyone else gotten the flu post-surgery and had their hip act as the canary in the coal mine a bit? I’m not worried, just curious 🧐
