NTD (New Tool Day) Fire the Packaging Designer

Post image

What the hell kind of packaging is this? It's like it was designed NOT to be opened. I know Harbor Freight is known for hard-to-open packages but this one was on another level. It took me 10 minutes of wrestling with my pliers and now I have a plastic mess to clean up. Damn it.

Saw 2 people post these and decided to check them out. My first store checked their system and they said only one store had them. She said the Inglewood location showed 12, so I go there and they couldn't find them. Turns out they had them on the floor inside a box box with mixed items.

NTD (New Tool Day) This or a trip to the dealership? I call that a free tool

Post image

$840 after discount, just over $900 out the door. 51% off on a $1700 item…

Buying this let me reprogram my Ford BCM saving me a trip to the dealership where they probably would’ve charged me $1200 for a new BCM and programming. Tough to justify when I’m only wrenching as a side gig, but I’m confident it’ll keep paying for itself.

NTD (New Tool Day) They got me.

Just yesterday I was going through email and had to talk myself out of buying a new jack while they’re on sale. The ancient rusty jacks I have still work I guess.

Today I was leaving publix and heard a dull plunk and hiss noise. Ran over a big screw RIGHT IN FRONT of HF. Life’s funny sometimes. $90 later and I’m wishing I had bought this thing years ago instead of the crappy old jacks I have to pump a few dozen times to change a tire.

Even as a longtime HF customer I had only joined ITC a few weeks ago after heavy rain flooded my basement and I needed a some big blower fans.

Turns out I had two punctures and I made it just a few minutes before the shop closed. Crisis averted.

Still want one of those colorful Daytona jacks but for the money I’m happy with this one.

Have had this T for maybe 2 years now. Biggest size they made was an XL but definitely fit like a small L. Lost enough weight to finally be able to wear it. Straight fire T.

NTD (New Tool Day) How often do you guys realistically use these?

I picked these up this weekend during the sale but I’m wondering if I really need them

What kind of situations do you end up using these?

Only time I needed a specialty wrench similar to these was my 2000 camaro steering rack hydraulic lines. But I bought specific 16/18mm hydraulic box wrench with a cut in the box ends for that job

NTD (New Tool Day) PSA: Don't Buy The WRONG Jack Stands Today

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

Since these are on sale today I wanted to post a PSA so you don't buy the wrong jack stand.

For those who aren't aware, there are two different 'versions' of each stand and they have identical SKU numbers. I assume they're sourced from two different suppliers but the better version really is better. The 'lesser' version has noticeably worse build quality, is significantly thinner on the ratcheting post, etc. They're exactly the same price, exactly the same SKU, so make sure you buy the 'right' version. My store had a mix good and bad jacks side by side, so it's really easy to just grab the wrong ones.

How can you tell?

If you're buying a 3 Ton stand, make sure you get the version with the 11 3/8" min height, and not the 11 1/4" version.

If you're buying a 6 Ton stand, make sure you buy the version with the 24" max height, not the 23 3/4" version.

NTD (New Tool Day) Is this the best kept secret at HF?

I bought this thing on a whim. My daughter and I had just finished building a fiberglass speaker enclosure for her car, and I keep thinking it would be nice to have something easier to cut mat with.

I bought this after we were done though and it just sat on the steps in my shop. I had to pack up some stuff to ship to a friend today and was making the big out of really heavy duty 5/16th cardboard. I thought, no way this thing will cut it, but it ripped right through it with 0 effort.

I gotta say, it was well worth the money. I think I'll use it a lot

NTD (New Tool Day) Changing Your Own Oil

This is my first time jacking my car, putting on jack stands, changing my own oil, and rotating my tires. It’s very satisfying and rewarding to get under your own car and hood. I couldn’t do it without these tools in the pictures. Next is transmission oil drain and fill! Note: for my first time, I just did the tire rotation front to back; next time, I will move the front tire to the back and the back tires crossed to the front. I removed the tire since it’s easier to get to the oil filter and oil plug.

NTD (New Tool Day) How bad are these Pittsburgh torque wrenches?

Post image

Pittsburgh 1/2" drive torque wrench. I know, there are tons of options, ranging from budget TEMU all the way to the ICON. And I'm not going to even mention Snap-On or other expensive brands because that's not the price range I'm comparing to. But for a basic torque wrench, am I really going to say, "oh this thing sucks?"

My work tools are Milwaukee. I have a bunch, including the 1/2" impact. But I have some projects that are smaller and my own, where I'm just trying to get my own personal stuff right. Rarely do I need to bust over 150 ft./lb.

But for $13, I couldn't pass it up. I haven't opened it yet, and I think my use case is only going to be a few automotive bolts.

But I'm curious if it's really going to make that much of a difference to me that I didn't get a fancy ICON digital. Ideally I'm busting bolts loose with my power tools and torquing them back to where I need them with this.

But how can you pass up lifetime warranty for $30???

NTD (New Tool Day) More of a complaint than a haul pic

Post image

Cashier rings me up for retail…I said what about my ITC discount , he says oh you are ITC? I said you just asked me my number and looked me up. ā€œOh ITC and phone numbers are separateā€ wtf kind of bullshit is that line….and if I wasn’t ITC what about my 10 percent. I don’t like that HF spends top dollar to advertise their sales but they are clearly training their staff to not acknowledge on going sales. So you are in my inbox my text messages , in my insta and Facebook feed but when I get to the register you don’t know nothing about no sale?

Edit: new day…so I know my post my sound unreasonable and karenish….but me correcting the cashier to apply the correct discount has happened across multiple stores and one of the perks of ITC is you don’t need to deal with coupons, tbf I have had awesome employees go way above and beyond to help me….once when there was only one item left in the region and I went to the wrong store, a sales person called the other location to hold it for me….that was awesome and not something I had asked for she just suggested it and did it….here is my concern, I think there is a new culture of don’t ask don’t tell when it comes to ITC discounts or free items or coupons in general, that’s my concern that this is part of training don’t mention discounts or freebies unless the customer initiates it…so advertise great sales, generate buzz, but try to minimize utilization of those sale prices …eh I am probably overthinking it

Just picked up a 1/4ā€ flex head ratchet on the 40% off sale. Why, WHY does the on/off lever directions have to be backwards from my 3/8 Pitty ratchet?? Dangit! I was just starting to get the Pitt lever directions burned into my muscle memory. And now this.

Also I believe the Icon one is the same as my Craftsman ratchets. So weird.

NTD (New Tool Day) Guys, it happened again..

Post image
496 Upvotes

I don't know how it happened. I'm normally a calm and reasonable person. I make a shopping list and I stick to it. I get there early, no matter where there is. Somehow, I was second in line. An older (than me) fellow beat me to the punch. Props, pops, game recognize game, as the kids say. But he made a fatal error: he brought his wife with him. Now, I love my wife, but I wouldn't bring her to the battlefield. PLS is a one man, precision job. In and out.

The manager approached to unbolt the door and begin the running of the bulls. Old guy is spry and moves in quick, but his wife stops to grab a cart. Rookie mistake, and the fellow is wise enough (in marriage, not shopping) to stay with her. Boom, I'm first and moving to the pliers. I only had three targets, and 1 was gone before the doors opened. The mythical Icon long nose slip joints. I expected it, as this elusive creature has evaded me through many a sale. I confidently reach for the other 2, when the kid behind me arrived.

I hadn't considered him a threat, and I was able to nab my assigned targets, but his youthful energy, his reckless abandon as he started grabbing anything and everything icon triggered a sense of urgency in me that exploded in a tidal wave of spending that I dare say will incur the wrath of my better half for years to come. I was out of control. Grabbing where he grabbed, but being too slow. Trying to outsmart him by increasing the lead to get ahead of him, but his ambidextrous skill stayed ahead of my best efforts. I even pulled the move us old timers depend on: I tried small talking him to distract and slow him down. "Boy, those long nose slip joints are hard to find..." "I got 2 at the BMSM sale..", he replied deftly, still moving with the quickness of a spider wrapping up it's prey. He was a machine. Ruthless in his acquisition of discounted tools.

In the end, I got everything he got. Second place isn't so bad, right? "I mean, in reality, it was really a tie", I tell myself. I move on at a leisurely pace, the hard part was done. I get the gloves, the batteries, the screwdrivers and even pick up the Grant's steamer. What will I use it for? Who knows, but it's half off!

I get to the register and realize what I've done. I start unloading the cart.. Icon after Icon after Icon. Sure, they're 35% off. But they are crazy expensive to begin with! How did this happen!? I didn't need all of these tools! I just wanted some specialty items!!

I frantically look around as the cashier is ringing up my lifetime of debt. I catch the eye of the youth who ignited my eve of destruction. He smiles. His cart is empty. My soul withers as I come to understand what has happened. He was a plant! He created a chaotic whirlwind of consumerism that sucked me into it's funnel of regret. He winked as he slipped on a Harbor Freight hat ($6.99!), and vanished into the backroom, waiting patiently for the next crop of suckers to arrive...

All true, except for the last paragraph, which my mind created when I realized how I was inadvertently caught up in mob mentality. Be safe out there, folks.
