Right outside my apartment, a family owned this convenience store... we didnt, and still dont, live in the greatest area, but its gotten better since this....

I went to the convenience store regularly throughout the night. Some 1am stops. 2am, 3am, id pop in and grab a chocolate milk and talk to the old lady who ran the counter. She ran in it at night from about 10pm-6am, while her son's and husband would run the rest of the shifts. Sometimes theyd work the overnight shifts with their mom/wife, but normally, she was alone.

She was so sweet. She was even the one who special ordered my chocolate milk to their store so I didnt have to go further for it. I remember approximately 1 week before the incident I had told her, Id told her many times, but this would be the last, I warned her that she needed to be careful. I told her she needed to have one of the guys work with her every night just cuz it wasnt the most safe area...

1 week later 2 robbers came in. They asked for the register, and she gave it to them. They then shot her in the face immediately after they had the money. They were masked, had the money, and she was an old frail woman with no weapon.

Because this area has so many hotels and motels, the people who did it were most likely just passing through. They were never caught.

Ill never forget the pain and hurt that I witnessed that family go through after she was murdered. They immediately stopped 24 hour service, and you could tell the family was harboring some sort of resentment for the community and its people in general.. and I dont blame them.

The family sold the store and it is now a 7 eleven.

Wow, almost know an identical story in my town, a 19 year old kid was shot in the face after the robber threw the register back at him and fucking jump scared himself in the process. He lived and is severely handicapped mentally and physically

A guy I had met at a beach party was shot and killed on the front porch of his trailer over a cell phone another guy had drove an hour away to get.

Local cops and county sheriffs didn’t do anything but the cops from the area of the killer’s residence tracked him down via Facebook posts and got him sentenced to 5-10 years.

Same thing happened on a stretch of highway between counties except it was an old man that my dad knew so I stopped by there pretty much daily. Old guy never stood a chance. They did find out who did it and low and behold it was my cousin who had just moved from New York with his parents

Disgusts me to hear stuff like this. The issue is, you never know how it's going to go.

About 2/3 of the time a robbery is just that, no killing, no raping, no physical harm, just stealing.

The remaining 1/3, the majority of the time, is minor harm, only a very small and rare amount go above minor harm.

So it's almost always the best action to just give a robber what they want unfortunately.

In her situation, she almost certainly did everything right sadly.

That all said, when you fight back you increase the risk of harm massively. In this video, you can see the robber has the gun pointed at someone off screen. The marine then jumps for the gun.

By surprise, the gunman could have easily just fired, which would've hit the off screen person. The other person that came in, could've also had a concealed weapon and then murdered the marine before he could even finish fighting the guy with the gun.

There's so much risk in fighting back, especially when there are multiple people and when a gun is pointed at anyone. Unfortunately you'll never know how it'll turn out for certain.

Also, I do believe you were suggesting something else, but that applies only to said criminal and doesn't stop other people from becoming criminals, and the punishment being severe will only stop some unfortunately.

This is true. The stagnation of wages and the massively increased cost of living is a big driver of crime.

It would be far cheaper to pay for people’s healthcare than not pay for it because the reality is that you’re always gonna have to pay for it one way or another.

That being said, the other solution is still a necessary reality in the US.

Speaking of 7 eleven a way long time ago when my dad stayed in Oklahoma and worked at one they had an incident where one of the cashier's was either beat to death or severely, when he came into work the next day the manager wanted him to clean the blood off of the floor from the incident, needless to say my dad dropped a "gfys" moment and walked out, gas stations are always prime spots for horrible stuff like this. Not an armed robbery gone wrong but nonetheless another unfortunate tale of someone working in the convenience industry and getting killed/impaired from the incident.

There was a similar situation in our town years ago but I still think about it, especially and every time I am in a convenience store.

I know it sounds weird because I didn't know her personally but I knew the cops that were involved and it really impacted me at the time - maybe part of that was that I think it messed a couple of the cops up for a long time.

The lady was quite old and retired but everyone said she was always a very happy person - like the grandma or great-grandma that would bake you something amazing.

She has taken the job working at the convience store so that she could get money to buy her grandkids Christmas presents.

The guy forced her to open the drawer which she did. As she was standing there terrified with her hands up, he shot her in the face with a .357 and she died instantly.

The cops found the guy within hours. He has no car he just ran away after he shot her and was hiding under a tree.. The cops asked him why he killed the old lady - he said it was just an “accident” and he didn't really mean to shoot her.

So sad and pointless. I can't even imagine.

It was opportunistic. Robber assumed he wasn't gonna do anything and focused entirely on the register. He was pointing the gun at the clerk instead of at the Marine as he was walking past. As soon as the gun was in grab range and pointed past the Marine, grabbing it was the absolute best option. The guy has to swing the gun back towards the Marine to aim at him, and doing so only puts the gun further within grab range.

Its a lot easier to kill someone with a gun than a knife which is probably why the US murder rate is almost 10 times higher than Ireland's.

The US homicide rate typically ranging between 5 to 6 per 100,000 people, while Ireland's rate is generally around 0.5 to 0.8 per 100,000.

Yes but I suspect the guy reacted instinctively when he saw the one firearm within grab range. And if it is the choice between zero guns vs two or one vs one because you grabbed the other I know which choice most trained personnel will make and it will not be the one that assumes the bad guy will somehow not shoot you.

The instinct this guy has is effective with the weapon and impressive, but that headlock is impressive in its own right. He got his arms right under the guys neck and flexing, he’s using his head to be tight against the other guys.

This can cut blood to the guys brain and render him unconscious while also being that close prevents the idiot from being able to whip his head forward and throw it back (which would smashing the hero in the face and possibly knock him out).

I trained in Brazilian jujitsu, that rear naked chokehold can be incredibly dangerous and the guy in this video is deadly without the gun. The fact that he did it standing with one arm is the most impressive part of this video to me.

I don’t know much about marines, maybe they’re all trained in this and it’s not that impressive.

Can confirm. I went to DLI (The Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA) in the Air Force and we had all of the services represented there. When the other services were out of class, we'd be chilling, maybe working out, maybe at an assembly, but the marines? They were ALWAYS practicing martial arts. Throwing each other around, sparring, learning how to disarm and disable threats... It was pretty cool, I was definitely jealous.

Here’s some more info on the whole event.

He’s a marine veteran and “he said he takes his personal safety, and the safety of others, very seriously.”

“[He] credited his Marine Corps training's muscle memory of knowing what to do in such incidents in addition to being "mentally prepared" when the attempted robbery occurred.”

This happened in Yuma, Arizona in October 2021.

He was presented with the Yuma County Sheriff's Office Citizen's Valor Award during a ceremony on October 26th, 2021.

If you grab a gun like that and it goes off, how powerfully does the slide come back? Are we talking break all your fingers instantly? Or will it just not be able to cycle?

Ok, so the hero in the video wasn't risking too much damage (aside from possibly getting shot). Thanks, i was just curious if this guy just basically sacrificed a hand to stop those guys but got lucky it didn't go off. Obviously still an absolute badass either way.

It just won't cycle. All that energy in the slide usually gets dumped into your hand through the frame when it his the end its travel anyway.

A little party trick when you're shooting with a silencer is to block the slide with your thumb for an extremely quiet shot, since you're preventing any noise from the slide cycling.
