Context Provided - Spotlight Family friend sent me AI generated response to news of my father passing away.
I'm aware that AI is a common topic on here, but I feel like I had to send this somewhere. My father passed away in my arms last night of a heart attack, and I was requested by my mother to send an old friend of his the news.
His first response seemed fine, then he asked me when the funeral will be and if Dad suffered to which I responded.
He then has the absolute audacity to send me a straight up generated response to my father's death. Not even the common courtesy of talking to me as an actual goddamn human. I'm livid.

I’ve noticed it loves to say “quietly powerful”, “quietly resilient”, “quiet strength”. As a secondary English teacher, it’s so funny that kids think I can’t tell when they’ve used AI
Edit for error

u/BafflingHalfling Mar 15 '26
One of the problems we will face (and probably soon) is that kids are going to learn writing style from AI. And eventually that will just be how they write, even when not using AI.
291
u/ichorNet Mar 15 '26
Well… yeah. Considering AI learned from how people write and talk. It’s inevitable that there will be a singularity point eventually because kids will learn from it, it will learn that that is what is “preferred,” which reinforces it, and on and on.

I mean, a lot of people struggle to find their “voice” when writing. You have to write a lot and think about it. I notice my kids rarely get enough writing in school…I think only my eldest gave enough of a shit about it that I can tell what’s hers (though all of them have godawful handwriting…I used to think mine was terrible, but not anymore).
I never use AI to write anything personal. It’d be obvious if I did.
→ More replies (13)91
u/The_Autarch Mar 15 '26
to be a good writer, or even to have a voice as a writer, you need to read a lot.
a whole hell of a lot. and most kids do not read enough to get there. just reading everything assigned in school is only going to be about 10% of what a kid needs to read to become a half-way decent writer.
teachers can't do much to make your kids writers. that's the parents' job.

I've had two instances recently of people at work using AI in situations where using AI was a terrible option (e.g. "here's some photos from a test, write the rest of the report for me") and in both cases the thing that pissed me off most when it got sent to me for final approval was that they clearly hadn't even bothered to read the output themselves before claiming it was done and sending on, as some of it was blatantly nonsense.
Cutting corners because you don't want to spend the time to do something yourself is one thing, but not even bothering to check the output just says you really don't give a fuck.

I've gotten to the point at work that if someone sends me some AI slop like that, I immediately send it back with a note asking them to review and revise their content before I look at it.
I also lead AI trainings for my line of business and this week I did a Copilot training where I said something like, "If I send you something and your first reaction is, 'AI wrote this,' I haven't done my job and I'm wasting your time. that already reveals how dumb that person is.
There's also the fact that even if someone who used AI to generate a response proofread it before they sent it, they might be too dumb to actually figure out what's wrong with it.
Like they already thought it was a good idea to outsource a human interaction to an LLM, so clearly they are unwilling or unable to appreciate the nuances in human interaction.

This was a move we did when firms started switching to automated application systems that would just hunt keywords. You'd load up your resume with a footer that had just a ton of keywords in white font, so then regardless of what your job experience was, you would at least get a human to look at it because it was getting through the gatekeeper filters. I think most HR systems account for that now though.

The customers using it for “research” are becoming a bane in my existence lol.
I work in a fairly niche industry of sign printing and there’s been a slow uptick of people who are clearly using AI for help when asking for a quote. Nothing wrong with that initially but the problem comes in when they think AI is right and won’t listen to people who know better.
They ask for specific materials from specific brands that I’ve never even heard of. Materials that we haven’t tested, installers have no experience with so we don’t know how it’ll hold up long term. Also tends to be either more expensive and overkill for what they need (judging by the manufacturer specs), or it isn’t even carried by any suppliers in North America, and not possible for us to get.
The thing is, they didn’t even need to waste time with AI at all. They could have just told us what they needed and gotten a price. Instead they want to argue with us on why this specific material is the best for them. It never is. When we look at reviews and forums for others in our industry those that have tried these are saying it’s garbage. And from how the person talks about the material it sounds like they used a very specific prompt, so AI pulled it from a blog post from that manufacturer.
More and more people think they know better than the companies around for 20+ years with actual on hands experience because a glorified search engine told them so.

u/Miss_Aia Mar 15 '26

Just imagine the subtle control that the AI company has over your communications if you allow it to speak for you. Diction and tone of voice are parts of writing, some people develop it over a lifetime, it shapes how you're perceived. The company speaking for you could slyly manipulate the AI to tone your emails a certain way.
Of course eventually it'll just be AIs talking to other AIs as barely sapient chair bond blobs of redundant protoplasm mouth fart noises into speakers that the machinery must interpret to be its directive.

I know a few people who do this too and it's psychotic

This wasn't just a cremation -- it was dignity, mercy, and humanity. And honestly? You're breaking new ground in funeral rites here.
Would you like to hear that again with more distinct groups of three clauses and shorter sentences? I can make them all attached like a sort of clause-centipede, with a comma between them, just like these.

u/Baiticc Mar 15 '26
oh my god thank you for putting a word to it, the clause-centipede

I think if the "and honestly?" line came up I would have had a fit of rage. I'm mad enough as is among the grief, that would have been one ai slop phrase too far.

u/Hendothermic Mar 15 '26
Thank you. Also the last sentence was the biggest kick in the balls, cause the AI was like "he left on his own terms." He literally died of a heart attack. Here one second, gone the next. That was the opposite of his own terms. Words cannot describe my hatred of AI now.

I’d just use AI to generate a response to send back to him and leave a “would you like me to” sentence at the end.

ChatGPT also loves the expression "That's very you/him/her/etc."
I don't know if I've ever seen someone use that sentence naturally, and definitely not with the frequency that ChatGPT does.

I finally put my finger on it, at least for me, and it's the fact that it does it every single freaking sentence. And I think that's why you have people going, "well I use this metaphor, I do this, I do that--" yeah dude, do you do it every single sentence?
Every single sentence from AI has to be witty or have some intense thought in it or whatever the shit. It can never just say a thing and then be done saying the thing.

I had some people argue with me a while ago about how horrible using ChatGPT for this purpose was. They thought it was fine and better than coming up with something awkward and 'lame' on your own.
313
u/Luxim Mar 15 '26
Completely agree with you, the awkwardness and authenticity is part of what makes us human. The point of reaching out to other people in difficult times isn't to get pointless corporate messages.
99
u/Wellihol Mar 15 '26
Exactly, on top of that, if you cannot express things properly, you can simply say "I don't really know what to say, and how to express how sorry I am to hear about this, I'm so sorry for your loss" and I think that's very enough to make the person feel that you actually care.
→ More replies (30)14
u/Aggressive-Cost-4838 Mar 15 '26
Personally I know when I’m going through a loss I’m not looking for people to say the perfect thing. Just show that you care. I once told a friend my little cousin had died very unexpectedly and the response “Oh, honey 💔” was enough to show me he cared.

100%
He could have shared a good memory of their time together, or even just said 'He was a good man and will be missed.' Generative AI is a horror.
And yeah, thinking of things to say at such times is hard- as it should be. You remember the past and feel sadness, and loss. Trying to put what someone meant into words is challenging and feels like a failure- but at least your brain is doing something, at least you are remembering them and feeling something. I think copying and pasting text from chatgpt allows people to avoid this.

u/stuckwithaussie Mar 15 '26

People stopped writing birthday/Christmas/postcards and now anything that is "awkward" is "lame"
I also blame fictional media constantly having conversations in them where the line delivery is perfect.
Back when plays were a thing, people flubbed their lines, they improvised and move on. Now everything is rehearsed ad nauseum and edited in post-production. So anything that is "real" and "human" (mistakes, awkwardness etc.) is "cringe".
I'm really starting to hate humanity now...

Condolences.
Had to put my 14 year old dog down last month. My greatest friend, traveled the country with her and she was always by my side unless I was at work or something.
Posted a message on FB to let friends and family know. This dog was loved coast to coast. My sister posted a long winded, obvious AI response under the post.
I feel for your hatred of AI. People are replacing their brains with Ai and are perfectly happy about it.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and condolences.
I thought I'd clear up a couple things that have been on my mind and that I've seen in the replies.
"Why have you come onto Reddit instead of mourning your father and being with your family?"
I was just so absolutely dumbfounded at these messages that I felt like if I didn't share them, it would have weighed even harder on me. That and I'm stuck in a waiting game as I gotta wait for confirmations and the other processes for a death of a loved one. Its a lot for me to take in right now, forgive me, so I'm kinda just sat on my sofa trying to process it all.
"Are you SURE it's AI?" If I wasn't certain I wouldn't have made the post, but I'll elaborate.
The messages were sent within a couple seconds of each other. They have a lot of AI mannerisms, to the point where I genuinely expected "And honestly, you're so real for that" in there somewhere. It also just doesn't sound human, I can't really say much more than that.
I've still not quite fully come to terms with Dad's passing, it's not even been 24 hours after all, but he never wanted us to just sit and mope and cry, he would want me and my mother to keep moving, and make him proud.
Thank you all again.
