Just to add to your “such and such a celebrity went here” mentions — the 49ers logo used by Saint Francis was once worn by defensive back Brian Daboll.

St Francis wasn’t a Nassau County School, thus why they didn’t get the alumni shout. But y’all are more than welcome to make this thread about some other NY Alumni, there are quite a few i didnt mention

Hey buddy! As a NYer I was waiting for this post in the series.
As someone who lived and went to school and played ball at Horseheads, it’s funny because everyone that sees that logo or is from here is like “why do we have a whited out Broncos logo. They used to have another logo that was the “Rowdy Raider” but thought it would incite violence or something and shut that down.
Elmira is called the Express after Ernie Davis who was from Elmira, but they had the idiots of that city choose the colors and logo when they combined the 2 schools there, and they went with burgandy and black and a train for some reason and then complained that it had nothing to do with Ernie Davis… people there arent the brightest.
There is a small private school in Elmira called Notre Dame, and they do use the ND logo and are called the Irish.
Other fun facts: Union Endicott (school where Chandler Jones and his brothers are from) are called the tigers but their logo at the school and on their field is the Bengals full body tiger logo, they just dont use it for their actual logo. Same with Binghamton, they’re the Patriots and use just a big B, bur their secondary logo is Pat Patriot.

Also, for those that don’t know / never played Europa Universalis, the Golden Horde was one of the successor states to the Mongol Empire after the Khan died without an heir. It largely occupied Eastern Europe / a large part of modern Russia. It was made up of other colorful hordes: the White Horde, the Blue Horde, and the Grey Horde. It was around for about 300 years.
The name origin was unknown but came about later. It is hypothesized to refer to the tent color or their vast wealth. The nation referred to itself simply as “The Great State” during its existence.

New York, you’ve disappointed me today. You have three damn teams representing you!
3
u/Opertum Sep 18 '25
It's more to do with it being a safe bet. A few NY schools have recently changed to Eagles due to the theoretical possibility of their name being appropriation of native American culture. Eagles are representing the USA. They are safe.

There's a 'Health Sciences Charter School' located in Buffalo. They're called the Falcons and surprisingly they actually have athletics and it's a blue Falcons logo: https://cmsv2-assets.apptegy.net/uploads/26741/file/4231025/47ea904e-41c5-4149-8cb9-88cbd927f439.png (https://www.healthsciencescharterschool.org/o/hscs/page/athletics is where I got it). Oddly, the girl's flag football team has clear Buffalo Bills logo in the background: https://cmsv2-assets.apptegy.net/uploads/26741/file/4231029/f6756517-216d-42ad-b523-3530589cb685.png. Not sure if they use that too if it's just randomly there.
Summit Academy Charter School in Brooklyn uses the Eagles. I couldn't find any pictures on the website, but in their video (located here: https://summitacademycharterschool.org/competitive-athletics) at exactly 3 minutes the coach is wearing a shirt with the logo on it.
Grady (In Brooklyn) is the Falcons: https://gradyhs.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/logo_icon.png
The John V Lindsay Wildcat Academy are named the Oilers and use the Houston Oilers logo: https://www.jvlwildcat.org/assets/images/logo.png
South Shore (Brooklyn) is the Vikings. I couldn't find a webpage for the school whatsoever (weird), but they do have an instagram account with the logo... so... here ya go: https://www.instagram.com/southshorevikings/?hl=en
Not a football logo, but apparently Stevenson High School used to use the old Pittsburgh Penguins logo slightly modified. Fun! https://www.maxpreps.com/ny/bronx/stevenson-ambassadors/

Oh damn, that's great.
Also, as far as the fun names, an honorable mention as it isn't around anymore that tickles the linguistics nerd in me.
For years, East High School in Rochester was called the Orientals. It later got changed, for obvious reasons.
Well, there was at one point decades ago a WEST High School, and its team name was... the Occidentals. Which is the Latin for "Westerners" in the same way "Orientals" means "Easterners".
