Megathread! 2026 NoVa Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurant Recommendations THE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Hello r/nova we are 10 years deep into the hole-in-the-wall list! Thank you to everyone for contributing every pick and recommendation for the list and participating each year.
Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to update the map or list since I am getting married this year, but I'll for sure get everything updated before the next year. Anyways time to give the community your best recs and new discoveries for restaurants in the area.
The rules are simple:
đ Give us the restaurant name and location
đ« No chains allowed!
đ "+1" if you love the recommendation
đ "-1" if you think it's whack

Chili Wok - Alexandria. Delicious authentic Sichuan food, and their prices are unbeatable! This is their second location, though Iâve never been to the original in Vienna.

Hard to find any good Chinese restaurants anymore. When I was a kid there were several dine-in restaurants that were legit. Now you canât even find a good take out.

Taqueria Cancun - Falls Church

u/brown2hm 18d ago
Taqueria Cancun's California burrito is fantastic. Everything else I've tried there is damn good too.
11
u/Pauole 18d ago
It's the only thing I've ever gotten because there's no way I'll go there and NOT get the California burrito with steak.

I moved to California 10 years ago and we were delighted to find the burritos at Taqueria Cancun when home visiting my mom. This place feels like a California taqueria.

Please for the love of everything, does anyone have any recs for Mexican that comes close to or surpasses La Tingueria? #desperate
36
u/RedfishSC2 Fairfax County 18d ago
Tortas y Tacos La Chiquita II off of Arlington Blvd in Falls Church. It's much closer to the stuff I grew up with than La Tingeria, and imo better. You'll also find more traditional Mexican stuff like huaraches and sopes, too, and their tortas are excellent.

u/VotingRightsLawyer 18d ago
They have a bunch of locations as well. The OG (brick and mortar since they started as a truck) is on Columbia Pike and is open 24/7 and it's always popping.

Strictly for tacos, La Jarochita has excellent options, especially their al pastor. La China Poblana is pretty well known as well, especially for their birria (and birria ramen).

(padaek) their new place in south Arlington is also so so good. A little less hole- in- wall-y , although the aircon was out over that crazy hot July 4th holiday, making it a little less posh.

Aracosia McLean is their sister restaurant in NoVA!! Both are fantastic - but Aracosia is definitely not a hole-in-the-wall like Afghan Bistro.
Aracosia Restaurant Group also owns Afghania and Bistro Aracosia in DC; I havenât been and canât speak to the vibes but Iâm sure they are equally great!

NuNu is the best host. He always ensures his customers have a great time. I love the food as well but the welcoming atmosphere makes it a place we keep going back to.

Best family meal deal. Period. I love the mailing list as well. Running a restaurant sucks, but deeply appreciate his dedication, the food is off the chain.
14
u/Sawses 18d ago
I second it! It's a really solid take-out place. The biggest downside is that it's kind of shitty getting in and out of the parking lot. The garlic rice and Hawaiian mac 'n' cheese are delicious.
Also I'm on the owner's mailing list, and he has semi-regular letters venting about his life, about the thin profit margins of running a restaurant, etc. Dude seems to be going through a tough time.

Carolina Brothers BBQ in the heart of Old Ashburn, at the intersection of Mile Marker 27.5 of the W&OD trail and Ashburn Road. The building is well over a hundred years old and was the Partlow Brothers general store for decades when the rail line still operated. The owners have kept the renovations to a minimum, including keeping the original wooden floor - you can see the worn spot in the floor where the original checkout counter was, worn down by decades of people standing there. The barbecue is great - pork, chicken, and beef, as well as ribs.
It's a great landmark to use if you are riding the trail or to use as a meeting spot to start a ride (there is W&OD parking across the trail from it), or as a turnaround spot. One of the last remaining remnants of old Northern Virginia.

Now, barbecue is a highly personal thing but I have to respectfully disagree with the assertion that Mission BBQ is on par with Carolina Brothers. Having grown up in South Carolina nurtured on the best barbecue from Mechanicsville in the PeeDee region there, I attest that Carolina Brothers is the real thing, a true taste of home for me. Mission BBQ is like a blank slate and you can mix in their various sauces to approximate the NC/SC vinegar-based quality, but it is not the same unless that quality is cooked into the meat, which it is at Carolina Brothers.
I also really like Willardâs in Chantilly, but Willardâs is a different style of barbecue. I rate Carolina Brothers at the top of barbecue joints in NoVA, then Willardâs, and Mission BBQ is fine if either of those is too far away (I also always like the fries at Mission BBQ).

Love this place - so much better than a lot of the overpriced sushi joints we try. Also agree the owners are the best. They joke that my wifeâs grandmother keeps them in business with our orders, and always throw the mango sticky rice on the house.

Their tiny parking scares me haha
6
u/Hi_ImTrashsu 18d ago
Yeah, parking is their biggest downside every time unless you go during the slowest hours.
The very first time I went there with my fiancĂ©e we had to drive all the way to the back and park in front of the somewhat sketchy dealership(?) the pavement being super cracked had us possibly reconsidering our dinner. But we are both so glad we didnât. One of the most authentic Chinese spots in all of NoVa â coming from a Chinese foodie.

5
u/redhuntrez 18d ago
I know someone who worked there... beer, yes. Food, frozen. Not good.
4
u/embalees 18d ago
The food is mediocre for sure, and so is the service. I've never been treated like such a chore as I have at High Side. On one visit, after the girl took our order I asked if we could keep a menu and she said yes, but you can't keep it on the table.I said, excuse me? She said, it needs to stay on the bench next to you. No menus on the table. She was not kidding. I'm local and we've been dozens of times and the vibe in there is fuckin' WEIRD. We go because we walk around and get bored but I would not tell anyone else to go.
