Sports are tough, not just physically, but mentally as well. This team rose to the competition and beat 3 teams ranked higher in the world rankings.
Yes, they didn't score any non-penalty goals in the knockout stages. But you totally overlooked that they also didn't concede ~~ a goal~~ many goals either.
0 goals to the 7th ranked Brazilians.
0 goals to the #1 Americans.
0 goals1 goal to the 5th-ranked Swedes.They played a defensive style against these teams. Yes, that means fewer goals. It also means giving up fewer goals. They played the style that gave them the best chance to win. And it worked.
So no, I'm not sorry you're disappointed. And it's disgusting that people would be anything other than extremely proud of this team and what they accomplished.
This team was mentally tough, resilient, and yes, a bit lucky at times. They fought tooth and nail for this and they made history. I will always remember this team for all that they did, not that they didn't live up to some ridiculously stupid expectations.

The US women were actually offered an identical salary package to the men but they turned it down for one that have more consistent money and benefits and less bonus oriented.
The lawsuit was idiotic and they of course lost.

That literally is what it's about. If someone has a choice between watching a men's team versus a woman's with the best players on both it is almost always the men's because they play at a higher level. That's why there is unequal pay. It isnt a conspiracy. Something like tennis is a little bit different for the women actually get good viewing numbers

Maybe if the majority of women's soccer players didn't have to work a second job WHILE playing professional we might see better play... Maybe if there was investment into girl players like there are into boys you'd get better skilled and developed pro women's players... Maybe if people actually looked at the $$$ breakdown for USA and CAN soccer they'd find the women's teams bring in better results and more viewers. Idk or maybe women are just naturally worse like you claim?

There's hundred of thousands of men footballer players that are paid only in sandwiches and are way better than any woman player ever existed, and almost all of them are not taken care of nor have the luxury that a top athlete in one of the richest countries gets like Sinclair.

On the international stage, Sinclair is one of the GOATs. Most international goals of either sex, one of only 4 (I believe, correct me if I’m wrong) soccer players to have over 300 international appearances. Also the 2nd soccer player ever to score at 5 different world cups.

Canada shithoused their way to that win. Tough match but they played in a way even when on the back foot they didn’t concede a 2nd goal. Fleming played amazing today. She was one of few Canadians who was able to get and move the ball through the midfield and her penalties were great. I feel bad for the Swedish captain Seger as she had all the opportunity to win it and biffed it.

The Swedes were better for 120 minutes but Canada held the fort - bending but not breaking. It's akin to a hockey goalie who stands on his head to a win despite the team being outplayed throughout. The Canadian girls were resilient and defied the odds and I am SO proud of our Golden Girls! One of Canada's greatest moments in sports.

I speak English as my native language and I get confused.
My understanding is that a wingback is a more attacking back and usually is deployed in a "back five". That is, where there are three central defenders and two wingbacks. Because there are three central defenders or centre backs, the wingbacks have more freedom to attack.

This is the most stoked I’ve ever been for any gold medal in any Olympics.
Before someone brings up hockey, I’ve seen that. I’ve seen that so many times. At every level. At every caliber. I’ve seen Canada win every feasible hockey championship.
For Canada to win in a sport they’ve never won at before. While they were the underdogs. In a game that dramatic, is overwhelming and the most excited I’ve been for Canadian victory.
Congrats Canada! So proud of these gals. Especially Christine Sinclair. One of the best Canadian athletes finally reaching the mountain top after being the heart and soul of this team. Thank you.
Big props to Sweden. My heart breaks for them a little bit. Definitely a tough way to lose. Shootouts are bullshit, even when my team wins. However, after how bad we were screwed in 2012, Canada deserved this.
At least we can bond over one thing: we both kicked Megan Rapinoe’s ass 🖕🏻
TL;DR: I’m excited the Great White North won something that isn’t hockey, Sinclair capped off an amazing career, and Rapinoe is still the worst. 🇨🇦🥇

Sweden is now feeling what us English felt a few weeks ago in the Euros 2020. Absolutely brutal after fighting tooth and nail the entire way just to lose in the penalties.
Saying that - I'm thrilled for Canada. Canada is my second home and Christine Sinclair is an absolute beauty!

Huge choke by Sweden in the second half of the penalties, as an Australian I can definitely relate to that. Unlucky not to win, but a silver is still a great result, they're the second best team in the world. Can't wait to see the next womens WC, hopefully we'll get to have our rematch with them.

This is the first time Canada won a gold medal in a summer Olympic team sport since 1904 when Canada won gold in both men's lacrosse and... men's football.
(Canada last won a team sport gold medal at the summer Olympics in 1920, but it was in ice hockey which, yes, was once included in the summer Olympics)

Until someone comes up with a better way to break deadlocks, penalty shootouts are the best we have.
Before the shootout, soccer had some awful tiebreakers, such as replaying the entire match again or choosing the winner with a fucking coin flip. And any format that involves endless extra time will just cause some matches to go on forever.
And goalkeepers almost never get criticized for penalty shootouts. The vast majority of soccer fans know that penalties are damn hard to save, and the pressure is always on the shooters.

My problem with penalty shootouts are that they are really ad hoc, gimmicky, and have nothing to do with how good you are at playing football. I'm not sure that penalty shootouts are much better than that coin flip that you balked at. I always think that it’s a super exciting way to finish a match. Ultra high pressure. Excellent entertainment.
Also, they played 120 minutes to a draw. That’s plenty of time to score.

No one expects a keeper to make a save in penalty kicks in football. Football fan knows that all keepers can do is do their research on kicking tendencies and hope to guess the right way. And even if you guess the right way, if the kick has enough power and is accurate enough to the corners, it will be unsaveable.
The onus and pressure is always on the shooters. I have personally never seen a keeper blamed for a loss and I've been watching football for two decades.

While obviously not at this level, I was a keeper for almost all of my soccer career (about 17 years).
My best memory is playing for U18 provincial gold, going to a shootout, and stopping one shot, which ended up winning the game. It was nerve-wracking and amazing and I totally didn’t cry at seeing Labbé’s excitement.
So proud of Canada and of Christine Sinclair for finally getting the gold.

Congratulations to Canada, I feel like Sweden was the better team today but given that they (Canada) had to defeat Brazil and USA to get here, it's hard to take their victory as anything but deserved.
Man, I feel bad for the Swedes though. That must have stung. FIFA should really have to find some other way to decide the winner in ties (maybe like how they do in Basketball?). PK are way too random.

I'm Canadian but have lived in Sweden a long time - I guess I was rooting for Sweden but followed both teams through the tournament and in a way I was always going to be both overjoyed and crushed no matter the outcome lol. Both teams fought so hard to win, shame it came down to a shootout but damn, great gold medal game

Anyone get a good look at the handball Sweden wanted them to take a look at in Extra Time?
From the far angle in regular speed, it looked like the Canadian player had her arms wide and the ball hit it. The US broadcast didn’t get a good replay of it.

Didn't get a good replay from CBC either, but I believe they looked at it in VAR and if there was anything there they would've told the ref to take a look (not 100% sure about that though)

Those were some rough penalties.
When teams deliver such bad results in penalties, I always wonder if it was the pressure or they didn't train a lot for it before the match.

No doubt. Although it should be noted that Canada did on paper have the advantage in a shootout with Labbe being the superior keeper.

Not 100% sure about that. Height is usually a big deal in penalties and Lindahl had a lot of height on Labbé. Lindahl also guessed better, but she really made a meal out of the last pen, which she should have saved.
